Rumours Manchester United target Arturo Vidal is moving house, according to his neighbours. Amid speculation that the Chile international is on the verge of signing for United, his neighbours have suggested that his about to leave his current property. Italian newspaper La Stampa claims to have spoken to Vidal’s neighbours, who suggested that the midfielder is on the move. He is reportedly already planning to sell his house in the town of Moncalieri, five miles south of Turin. While there is no confirmation that he is moving to England or that he isn’t simply moving to another property around Turin, the reports are bound to raise eyebrows given the level of speculation already surrounding the player. Meanwhile, Gazzetta dello Sport suggests that Vidal is set to be offered £4.75m-a-year to move to Old Trafford and that Juve simply cannot match that figure. They suggest that the deal could go ahead at around £35m.

Don’t cry for me, Argentina. Pope Francis Out AP Vatican City 4.1.14 This morning, the College of Cardinals appointed Theodore King, 45, Claremore, Oklahoma, USA the general manager of the Roman Catholic Church. King then issued a termination notice to Pope Francis at 10 a.m. Rome time. “He’s a very good man, but he just had to go,” King said. The decision to fire Francis stems from a series of comments to the press culminating in his March 5 interview with an Italian newspaper (La Stampa) in which he indicated that civil unions for *** might be okay. “That was the flash point for us,” King said of the Church’s decision to terminate Francis’ position as pope. Shortly after he was fired, former Pope Francis, carrying his baggage with him, was escorted by the Swiss Guards and Roman police to the airport where he boarded an Alitalia Air flight bound for Buenos Aires, Argentina. Earlier this year, he renewed his Argentinian passport. It is too early to tell what the former pope will ...

I’m Not a Marxist, Says Pope Francis Pope Francis said he knew a lot of “good” Marxists but was no communist himself, following criticism of his diatribes against unfettered capitalism from conservative commentators in the United States. “Marxist ideology is wrong. But in my life I have met a lot of Marxists who are good people, so I do not feel offended,” Francis said in an interview with the Italian daily La Stampa published on Sunday (yesterday). Pope Francis PRAYS FOR THE POOR IN THE HEART OF THE SHOPPING DISTRICT IN ROME As Rome's Christmas shopping season officially kicked off on December 8, Pope Francis paid a personal visit to Via Condotti, a street in the heart of the shopping district lined with luxurious stores like Dior, Armani, Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Cartier. He prayed aloud in front of a statue of Mary for people to "never be left indifferent to the cries of the poor," reports The Washington Post. December 8 marks a church holiday honoring Mary, mother of Jesus, known as Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and it is a papal tradition to offer a public prayer on this day. He lived up to his reputation as the People's Pope, sitting with his chauffeur in the front seat of his Ford Focus as he drove from the Vatican to Rome's Spanish Steps, to pray in front of the statue of Our Lady Of The Immaculate Conception, reports La Stampa. The Pope gets on the line, and everyone is talking Pope Francis already has distinguished himself from his predecessor with a more down-to-earth style. Now he is both unnerving the Vatican and delighting the faithful by picking up the telephone and spontaneously calling people, earning the nickname “the Cold Call Pope.” This month, he called to comfort a pregnant Italian woman whose married boyfriend had unsuccessfully pressured her to have an abortion. The woman, who is divorced and will be a single mother, wrote to the pope, fearing she had fallen afoul of the church. Not knowing the correct address, she marked the envelope “Holy Father Pope Francis, Vatican City, Rome.” The pope offered to personally baptize the baby when it is born next year, according to an account in La Stampa, a newspaper in Turin. Maintain “Purity of Heart” in These Critical Times “NO ONE can deny that chastity is a problem in the Church today.” Catholic journalist Vittorio Messori made that observation on the sex scandals that have recently involved the Church in Italy. “And it cannot be resolved by abolishing ecclesiastical celibacy because 80 percent of the cases involve *** cases of sexual deviation of priests who abuse men and boys.”—La Stampa. Rampant wickedness is without doubt a sign of these “last days” of the present system of things. (2 Tim. 3:1-5) As news reports show, the resulting moral decay has a negative influence not only on people in general but also on those who call themselves men of God. Their corrupt and impure heart moves them to commit depraved acts. (Eph. 2:2) For good reason, Jesus warned that “out of the heart come wicked reasonings, murders, adulteries, fornications, thieveries, false testimonies, blasphemies.” (Matt. 15:19) Jehovah God, however, desires that his servants love ...

One of Benito Mussolini’s secret bunkers, discovered in Rome’s central Palazzo Venezia, will be opened to the public this fall, reports La Stampa. City superintendent Anna Imponente and architect Carlo Serafini originally unearthed the bunker in early 2011 when engineers were carrying out work on the foundations of the famous Italian palazzo. On discovering a small wooden trap door, they descended a narrow flight of brick stairs that led them to the bunker. There had been no official records of the hideout, which had been abandoned during construction. (TIME: Was Mussolini Misunderstood?) “When we saw the reinforced concrete, we realized what it was,” Serafini told La Stampa. “Mussolini never stayed there but without a doubt he would have gone down to inspect the progress of the work.” The bunker is 50 feet below ground, so deep that it also revealed some buried Roman ruins. However, the rough concrete walls and holes in the wall for electric wiring show that the hideout was never finished. Se ...

VATICAN CITY (AP) — In the end, American-style transparency was no match for the Vatican's obsession with secrecy. Cardinals attending closed-door discussions ahead of the conclave to elect the next pope imposed a media blackout Wednesday, forcing the cancellation of the popular daily press briefings by U.S. cardinals that had provided crucial insights into the deliberations. The official reason for the blackout was that some details of the secret discussions about the problems in the church appeared in the Italian newspaper La Stampa. But speculation mounted that the underlying aim of the blackout was to silence the Americans, who have been vocal in their calls for disclosure about allegations of corruption and dysfunction in the Holy See's governance before they enter the conclave to elect a successor to Benedict XVI. As a result, the conflict appears to be a microcosm of the likely battle lines heading into the election: American and German cardinals have indicated they want a pope who will impose so ...
Keep in mind, IT'S A NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION. Does it not take PROFIT to fund Retirement plans. It's good to be the pope - even a retired one, it turns out. As Pope Benedict XVI steps down on Thursday, his retirement package - the first one the Vatican has had to prepare in almost 600 years - would likely be considered a sweet deal by the average American senior, providing a steady income and generous perks. Let's start with the basics: The pope emeritus will receive a monthly pension of 2,500 euros, according to Italian newspaper La Stampa. That translates to almost $3,300, or close to the monthly maximum of $3,350 that Social Security will pay to an American who retires this year.
Added partial google translate of La Stampa's coverage to my post. Benedict XVI quoting Romano Guardini
What Does a Pope Get When He Retires? What kind of retirement package does an abdicating pope receive? There is no historic precedent, but according to the Italian daily La Stampa, the 85 year-old Pope Benedict XVI will receive a monthly pension worth 2,500 euros a month (about $3,340) once he steps down on Feb. 28. The first pontiff to retire in six centuries, Benedict XVI has left canon lawyers and Vatican officials with plenty of doubt. Dealing with an abrupt resignation and not a sudden death, the Holy See has yet to determine Benedict’s new title, the color of his new dress and whether he will keep the name Benedict or return to his birth name of Joseph Ratzinger. Most likely, he will get the title of Bishop Emeritus of Rome, qualifying him for the €2,500 pension. The former leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics will get half of what a retired cardinal is entitled to receive, although it is possible that the next pope grants Benedict the title of emeritus cardinal. “In this case, his mo ...
The Vatican has confirmed a report that Pope Benedict XVI hit his head and bled during a trip to Mexico last year but said the incident had no bearing on his decision to step down. An aide who was on the trip with the 85-year-old pontiff recounted the incident to the Italian daily La Stampa. The Vatican's official daily, L'Osservatore Romano, this week said the incident during the trip to Mexico and Cuba last March helped the pope make up his mind to step down as leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics. The United States will share with the Philippines all its information on the grounding of the USS Guardian in Tubbataha and consult Manila before publishing the results of its probe into the incident. US Secretary of State John Kerry made these assurances to Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario in a telephone conversation last night, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on February 14. Marchisio lauds PSG´s Verratti 8 February 2013 14:47 Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio has praised PSG's Marco Verratti and compared him to fellow Italy international Andrea Pirlo. Verratti impressed in Italy's 1-1 friendly draw against Netherlands on Wednesday after coming off the bench at half-time, and Marchisio believes the 20-year-old has a bright future ahead of him. "Marco is still young and has room for improvement, but he already has a lot of quality," Marchisio told La Stampa. "He is the player who is most similar to Pirlo. Andrea is a great player and still has plenty of years to play. We would be happy if he played for us forever, but Marco has some great qualities in his role, too. "Will Verratti ever play for Juventus? I am in no position to answer that. The transfer market is open twice per year, so there's always a chance." Verratti joined PSG from Pescara in 2012 and has a contract with the Ligue 1 side until June 2017.

The Shroud of Turin Wasnt Faked, Italian Experts Say Antonio Calanni, Has the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin finally been proven? A new study by Italian scientists may not be definitive on its origins, but it does refute the popular notion that it was faked during the Middle Ages. Experts at Italy’s National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Development have concluded in a report that the famed purported burial cloth of Jesus Christ could not have been faked. According to the Vatican Insider, a project by La Stampa newspaper that closely follows the Catholic church, the experts’ report says, “The double image (front and back) of a scourged and crucified man, barely visible on the linen cloth of the Shroud of Turin has many physical and chemical characteristics that are so particular that the staining which is identical in all its facets, would be impossible to obtain today in a laboratory … This inability to repeat (and therefore falsify) the image on the Shroud makes it imp ...

Fernando Alonso almost lost his temper ahead of last Sunday’s Indian grand prix, the Italian newspaper La Stampa reports. The newspaper said the Spaniard was furious after the Maranello based team’s technical boss Pat Fry blamed the drivers for a sub-standard qualifying performance. “The result reflects our current potential,” said Fry after Alonso qualified fifth in India. “But in order to be where we wanted and where we were capable of being, we needed to be perfect today and we weren’t,” he added. Alonso went into the Indian GP weekend bemoaning the fact that, despite always talking up Ferrari’s improvements, the F2012 has not substantially improved for several races. And his characterisation of his title battle as a head-to-head with Red Bull’s Adrian Newey might also be interpreted as a slight on Newey’s Ferrari equivalents. La Stampa said that when Alonso heard about Fry’s post-qualifying comments, he “went into a rage”. “(Stefano) Domenicali tried to calm him down … bu ...
If only Juve had Cavani Fabio Cannavaro believes that Juventus are an Edinson Cavani short of becoming a truly great side. Speaking to La Stampa ahead of the Week 8 game between Juve and Napoli, the stopper was asked for his opinion on his two former clubs. “Juventus would be stellar with Cavani,” he stated of the Azzurri striker. “He is the kind of top player that they were looking for in the summer. “He works hard for the team, he doesn’t leave any reference points and he scores goals. For a defender, he is an opponent that you don’t see but feel.” Both clubs are currently leading the standings after seven games, but the 2006 World Cup winner insists the game won’t be decisive. “It won’t decide the Scudetto,” Cannavaro, whose brother Paolo captains the San Paolo outfit, continued. “Both sides like to win by playing their brand of football and they line up in a similar way. But there is a difference in how they score. “Antonio Conte’s Juve attack as a unit, whereas Napoli leav ...
Rome also has designs on Jerusalem. For 46 years after Israel's rebirth the Vatican refused to acknowledge Israel's right to exist. But Rome wants to exert premier influence over Jerusalem, which will one day function as the capital of her World Church. In a 1993 letter to the Pope, Shimon Peres promised to internationalize Jerusalem, granting the UN political control of the Old City and the Vatican hegemony over the holy sites within. This was confirmed by the Italian newspaper La Stampa. In March 1995 the Israeli radio station Arutz Sheva was leaked a cable from the Israeli Embassy in Rome, confirming the hand over of Jerusalem to the Vatican. The future Pope will establish his throne one day within the walls of the rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem. It is from here that he will rule his World Church. And this day may not be as far off as many believe. The cornerstones for the Third Temple have already been quarried by the Jewish group known as the Temple Mount Faithful. They are extremely well financed and o ...

The agent of Arsenal captain Robin van Persie has agreed personal terms with Juventus. La Stampa says agent Kees Vos was in Turin on Friday and Saturday to thrash out contract terms with Juve GM Beppe Marotta on behalf of Van Persie. If he is made available, Juve would have to find £45 million to land the Dutch ace.

That's why everyone should put their cards openly on the table. The voters' verdict is already in across several countries and regions: the cure based strictly on austerity within the eurozone has failed. What needs to be done now is to take that reality on board and to start negotiations that promise to be trying and that may lead to awkward compromises. Greece, t ...
