Zubin Mehta Zubin Mehta was born in 1936 in Bombay and received his first musical education under his father’s Mehli Mehta’s guidance who was a noted concert violinist and the founder of the Bombay Symphony Orchestra. Richard "Stinky *** Hollister was a mountain of a man who never encountered a party he couldn't liven up. All he had to do out of high school was go in to the wildly successful business his family had developed over some seventy five years and he would have been in line to cash out royally, but instead he chose the life of song and dance, and proceeded to ride the range in the late seventies and throughout the eighties with clowns like yours truly, Bobby "The Clam" Martelli, George Sanchez and of course the ultimate showman (And ladies man) the late Robert Fasio. Stinky *** was revered all over the Midwest and he generally could be found holding court and making book at the old La Scala restaurant downtown on Meridian Street where he actually kept a change of ...

July 25, 1886, Giuseppina Morlacchi, widow of John "Texas Jack" Omohundro, died in Lowell, Massachusetts. Mlle. Morlacchi was born in Milan, Italy, in 1846. She began dancing in Genoa and danced at La Scala in Milan and toured in many other cities of Europe before coming to America where she introduced the Grand Gallop Can-Can to American audiences. Ned Buntline hired her in 1873, in Chicago, to help him groom the two rough frontier scouts, Buffalo Bill Cody and Texas Jack Omohundro for their roles in Scouts of the Prairie, the play Buntline had written in four hours on the arrival of the scouts in the big city. Along with Morlacchi came her manager, Arizona John Burke who was in love with the tiny dancer. She was not attracted to the burly and coarse manager and later press agent for Buffalo Bill's Wild West. Morlacchi was popular with American audiences by this time and many play critics wrote glowing descriptions of her appearance, helping to bring good houses to the fledgling actors, in their first at ...

OPERA SINGERS FROM THE PAST - MIGUEL FLETA Miguel Burró Fleta (1897 - 1938) was an Aragonese operatic tenor. Despite his short stage career, lasting from 1919 to 1935, Fleta has been described as one of the most significant Iberian opera singers of the 20th century. Among the important international venues at which he sang were La Scala, Milan, (in 1923-26) and the New York Metropolitan Opera (in 1923-25). Additionally, in 1926, he had the honour of creating the role of Calaf in Puccini's posthumously-premiered final opera, Turandot, at the insistence of La Scala's principal conductor, Arturo Toscanini. But this taxing dramatic role took him to the limit of his resources and he did not attempt it again. Fleta made his operatic debut in Trieste in 1919, having previously studied voice at the Madrid conservatory. Successful engagements in Rome followed, leading to his La Scala and Met debuts. He quit the Met in acrimonious circumstances, however, and the resultant legal action stopped him performing again ...

On Friday, May 9th I attended, after 36 years of season tickets, the last performance with the Florentine Opera. Of approximately 120 operas, it ended with a production of 'La Boheme'. Of those performances about 12, or maybe as many as 20, ended with a standing ovation of any duration. This last performance was befitting since Rodolfo, performed by Noah Stewart, an African American, was one of those operas. It was one such performance around 40 years ago that got me interest in opera, a special piano performance of 'Madama Butterfly' by the Skylight Theater with the incomparable Leontyne Price. This, by no means is the end... now it's on to La Scala and the opera houses of the world.

OPERA SINGERS FROM THE PAST - GIUSEPPE DE LUCA Giuseppe De Luca (1876 – 1950), was a famous Italian baritone who achieved his greatest triumphs at the New York Metropolitan Opera. He made his operatic debut at Piacenza in 1897, singing Valentin in Gounod's Faust. His debut proved a success and he was invited to sing at a string of more important venues. He appeared at Italy's foremost opera house, La Scala, Milan, from 1902 to 1910, and made his London debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1907. Subsequently, De Luca moved to America where he became a leading baritone at the Metropolitan Opera for 20 years, from 1915 to 1935. (He returned briefly to the Met in 1939-1940.) His first appearance at that house was on 25 November 1915, as Figaro in The Barber of Seville with Frieda Hempel as Rosina and Giacomo Damacco as Count Almaviva, with Gaetano Bavagnoli conducting. De Luca is notable for creating two important Puccini roles: Sharpless in Madama Butterfly (La Scala, 1904) and the title role ...

Hey, London musical theatre lovers! We'd like to invite you all to our very special evening, singing exquisite Richard Rodgers rarities with the renowned Nash Ensemble, conducted by West End veteran David White, in all-new orchestrations and soaking up the rarified air of the world-famous Wigmore Hall. I'll be there, along with Bill Burden (title role in CANDIDE at La Scala) and Louise Dearman, who I'm very excited to sing with for the first time (she's the only person yet to play BOTH lead roles in WICKED--a big talent!). The Wigmore is usually used for very posh recitals featuring the great and good from the opera world, so this is a real departure. The acoustic is justifiably famous for being darn near perfect, and the hall itself is an absolute jewel--this evening should be a treat! Please do book tickets soon---as it's a recital hall, it's quite small, less than 600 seats, so plan ahead to avoid disappointment! Please also feel free to share this invitation and post---I'm hoping to get the word a ...

Beniamino Gigli (March 20, 1890 – November 30, 1957) was an Italian opera singer. The most famous tenor of his generation, he was renowned internationally for the great beauty of his voice and the soundness of his vocal technique. Music critics sometimes took him to task, however, for what was perceived to be the over-emotionalism of his interpretations. Nevertheless, such was Gigli's talent, he is considered to be one of the very finest tenors in the recorded history of music. His operatic debut came on October 15, 1914, when he played Enzo in Amilcare Ponchielli's La Gioconda in Rovigo, following which he was in great demand. Gigli made many important debuts in quick succession, and always in Mefistofele: Teatro Massimo in Palermo (March 31, 1915), Teatro di San Carlo in Naples (December 26, 1915), Teatro Costanzi di Roma (December 26, 1916), La Scala, Milan (November 19, 1918), and finally the Metropolitan Opera, New York (November 26, 1920). Two other great Italian tenors present on the roster of Me ...

TEATRO SOCIALE A Special Commemorative Stamp for Como’s Opera House Bicentenary was issued by Italy’s Posts on 28 October 2013. Verdi, Wagner and Como’s Teatro Sociale have a major date in common, the date of their birth: 1813. Built on the site of the ruins of a 1200 AD castle, the Teatro Sociale was inaugurated on 28 August 1813 with a double bill: Antonio Fonseca Portugal’s “Adriano in Siria”, and Giuseppe Mosca’ “I Pretendenti Delusi”. The Sociale is a particularly privileged opera house; in 1943, when La Scala, the Milanese opera temple, was tragically damaged by bombing, the Sociale became the new venue for La Scala’s opera productions. This added substantially to the already rich list of legendary opera singers who performed there: from Giuditta Pasta (in Rossini’s Tancredi) to Malibran, Tamagno, Gigli, Pertile, Schipa, Tagliabue, Del Monaco, Di Stefano, Kraus, Dal Monte, Simionato, Scotto, and Devia. Great conductors like Toscanini, Serafin, and Muti also performed here. ...
Bellini's NORMA had its world premiere this day in 1831 at La Scala, Milan with Giuditta Pasta and Giulia Grisi in the lead roles of Norma and Adalgisa. Grisi went on to create the role of Elvira in I PURITANI, and Pasta that of Amina in LA SONNAMBULA. These three Bellini operas, each its own testament to the versatility of the coloratura soprano, are presented by the Met this season!
Deborah Polaski Biography As Brünnhilde in Harry Kupfer’s 1988 staging of Richard Wagner’s Ring der Nibelungen in Bayreuth, Deborah Polaski emerged as one of the world’s most promising dramatic sopranos. In two consecutive Ring cycles on the “Grüner Hügel”, (the first with Daniel Barenboim, the second with James Levine), she sang this role more than any other soprano since the Second World War. Although she had already sung in opera houses such as La Scala, Munich and Berlin, it was after her debut in Bayreuth, that she received offers to sing in all of the world’s major opera houses: Paris, London, New York, Sydney, Barcelona, Dresden, Vienna and Salzburg, to name just a few. In addition to Brünnhilde, Polaski’s other Wagner repertoire consists of demanding roles such as Tannhäuser’s Venus, The Flying Dutchman’s Senta, Lohengrin’s Ortrud, Walkyrie’s Sieglinde, Parsifal’s Kundry and Tristan’s Isolde. These are some of the longest and dramatically most complex roles ever comp ...

Daniel Barenboim to leave La Scala opera house Daniel Barenboim conducted Wagner's Das Rheingold during the BBC Proms this summer. Conductor Daniel Barenboim is stepping down as musical director of Milan's La Scala opera house two years early at the beginning of 2015. Stephane Lissner, superintendent of La Scala, called Barenboim's departure the "end of an era". Barenboim joined the world-renowned opera house in 2006 before becoming musical director in December 2011. Unconfirmed reports in Italian media suggested he will be succeeded by Milanese conductor, Riccardo Chailly. Lissner is also leaving La Scala in August 2014 to manage the Paris Opera and will be succeeded by Alexander Pereira, the Austrian artistic director of the Salzburg Festival. Pereira previously indicated that he would like an Italian to be the next musical director and Italian media suggested Chailly would be his choice. A decision is expected next month. Israeli-Argentine Barenboim, 70, recently led the first ever complete Wagner Ring ...
I always felt redundant and unnecessary to state to be proud of being an Italian. My father taught me better to wave flags and use rhetorical speeches to fully understand and appreciate where I am coming from. However, tonight I have to make an exception. Hearing the amazing musicians from La Scala in Milan, playing so masterfully the sublime melodies from Giuseppe Verdi's Fantasie in a private concert at MIT, made me shiver at the thought of being part of such an amazing artistic culture and country. Many thanks to the Italian Consul Giuseppe Pastorelli for inviting me and my wife to this unbelievable concert. If you are in New York, do not miss them at Carnegie Hall.
