A Korean War vet, who donated $500,000+ toward creating the Korean War Veterans Memorial, has passed away:
Well I was sitting at my gate at Reagan National Airport in Wash DC the other day and couldn't help but notice these dapper folks in spats, pin-stripes, anchors away dresses. Then some catchy swing music came on strong and a bunch of WWII vets landed at our gate. They came off the plane beaming, giving autographs and taking a turn on the spontaneous dance floor. I came to learn all of this is sponsored by a non-profit group called the Honor Flight Network. They bring all kinds of U.S. war veterans to D.C. to tour the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the National World WarII Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and other memorial sites, such as Arlington National Cemetery. Any vet in America can qualify and is brought in absolutely gratis, but they are especially concentrating these days on WWII vets as the youngest of these individuals who served are now 85 years old. As a matter of fact, an astounding 640 WWII vets die every single day. By the way, I learned on their web site (honorflight.org) that oth ...

Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 13, 2014. The nation’s capital, along with much of the Eastern Seaboard, is blanketed in snow. If one doesn’t have to worry about traffic and can make it into the historic part of the city, Washington is lovely under these conditions. One monument, in particular, is meant to be seen in these conditions—the Korean War Veterans Memorial, which depicts the Frozen Chosin, a play on words relating to the soldiers and U.S. Marines who fought at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. “Freedom Is Not Free,” reads the inscription in marble. The pond at nearby John J. Pershing Park is frozen over too today, although the statue of the great American general, holding his hat in one hand and binoculars in the other, is visible in any kind of weather. In 1917, “Black Jack” Pershing led the first of some 200 American soldiers ashore at Boulogne to calls of “Vive l’Amerique!” from grateful French people who’d been exhausted and battered by World War I. It was an off ...

Had a fantastic afternoon, even with the rain. I went to Overland Park, Kansas to the Korean War Veterans Memorial and did a photo shoot for a calendar. Before you laugh too hard, cuz I probably would too, it was for charity. It's a project sponsored by our club, The Kansas City Beard and Mustache Club and proceeds from the sales will go to the Unleashed Pet Rescue and Adoption. The photo shoot (s) are with "Beardos" and their dogs. Being an Air Force veteran I was thrilled to be asked to do this at the memorial. It was an honorable shoot. The rain added a somber feel to it, which it kinda is at a memorial anyway. I have to thank Jacob Julius Meyer, our photographer. This cat is the real deal and specializes in Pet Photography. Check out his FB page. "New Friends Photography". He was awesome. I must thank my sis Cindy Naputi and Meredith Sharp for bringing my dog in law, Marley, since I don't have a dog of my own. Marley was outstanding.
Go Tom! Review of Tom's book in the Washington Post! THE POLITICS AND POLEMICS OF ‘CIVIC ART’ A history of a government agency might sound like bibliographic Nembutal, but not Thomas Luebke’s “Civic Art,” which makes surprisingly great summer reading. This richly illustrated, 636-page history of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, the government body founded in 1910 that has design oversight for much of what is built in the District, will reconnect you with the city, make you look at the built environment with new eyes, and let you wander the streets, parks and ceremonial byways of the nation’s capital alert to what might have been, what might be much worse, and the convoluted process that led to the city we know today. It will show you how much better the Korean War Veterans Memorial might have been, how ugly the Mall once was, how close we came to losing now-treasured city landmarks such as the Old Post Office building, and much more than any ordinary tour guide will bother to tell you about . ...

My daughter, Cassidy, is in the Quest class in 5th grade. The students will be taking a summer field trip to Washington, D.C. Each student must have a chaperone with them as well. So, I will be going with her. We will be visiting places such as the Air and Space Museum, Capital Hill, FDR Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, Jefferon Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, African American Civil War Museum, Fords Theater, Library of Congress, Pentagon, White House and about 20 other places. It's truely a once in a lifetime experience. Cassidy has worked hard in Quest and has earned the honor of being able to go. In order for the two of us to go we have to fundraise the money to pay for the trip. We need to raise over $3000 to cover mine and Cassidy's portion. The Quest class is having to raise these funds for each child and parent attending so for the next few months we will be working diligently to raise this money. We are currently selling raffle tickets for $1 for a chance t ...
