President Obama visited Cedar Rapids yesterday I’d heard that President Obama would be visiting Cedar Rapids this week, and I had never seen him (or any other US President) in real life, so I decided to drop by the local Democratic Party headquarters on Saturday and pick up a couple of tickets. I rode out to the event with my friend Mike, who had the mid-day shift off of work today. (I took vacation time.) It seemed like a couple of thousand other people also decided to go. The speech was scheduled to happen in the basketball arena at Kirkwood Community College. It was supposed to start around 1:00, and we got there before 10, but we were still in a long, long line to get in. After a couple of hours of moving really slowly, I looked at my ticket and saw that it said “Tickets are required but do not guarantee admission.” I started asking some of the line attendants whether they thought we’d get in, and they said things like “Maybe” and “I hope so.” Finally, when there were around 50 p ...
