It is close to the Khyber Agency[1] which leads to Khyber Pass, a prominent route through the Hindu Kush mountains to Landi Kotal, the highest point of the pass, and the Afghan border. Contents Hayatabad developed as a residential area in Peshawar in the late 1970s. Primarily known to be used for residential purposed, but it is also been used by various industries comprising "industrial estate". The Institute for Preservation of Art and Culture (IPAC) and Kuch Khaas brings you the tenth concert of the Instrumental Ecstasy series of concerts. Featuring instrument: Charsadda Folk Sehtar and Mangai The Sehtar from Charsadda is also a long-necked lute played in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan. It is not related to the North Indian classical Sitar and its name is probably derived from the Setar a Central Asian and Iranian long-necked lute. The instrument is similar in construction to the Chitrali Sitar but the playing style is different of both areas. In this event we are lucky to have the last Ustad (Maestro) of Charsadda sitar to perform for us. Accompanying the Sitar we will have the traditional folk clay percussion instrument of the region called Mangai. Artists: Ustad Zainullah Jan on Charsadda Sitar and Ustad Malang Jan on Mangai (Clay percussion).

Imran Khan led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has decided to end its blockade of Nato supplies, and end the sit-ins on the routes from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Afghanistan:
Thousands of people have fled their homes in North Waziristan Agency, anticipating a major military operation, after killing of dozens of people in the recent air strikes by Pak Army targeting militants’ hideouts in Tehsil Mir Ali of the Agency. Reportedly so far 27000 people from six affected villages namely Haidar Khel, Siman, Edaak, Moski, Hakeem Khel and Epee have escaped to Bannu and Lakki Marwat, the adjoining settled districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The empty-handed refugees have taken shelter in school buildings, veterinary centers and tents in Bannu & Lakki Marwat, susceptible to cold weather and hunger due to lack of warm material and food items. In this situation Al-khidmat Khawateen Trust has launched winter relief program for the needy and poor IDPs of North Waziristan Agency. Al-khidmat Khawateen Trust distributed winter package, bed sets worm clothes (for women children) and other things of needs.
Inching towards action By Dr. Mohammad Taqi Daily Times February 27, 2014 Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has offered the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to sort matters out by playing a cricket match. It is truly astounding that someone holding an important official position at such a critical juncture in Pakistan’s history could make such cavalier remarks. The TTP swiftly rebuked his offer not just verbally but also by attacking several targets in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including the Iranian consulate and cultural centre in Peshawar, killing two Frontier Corps (FC) soldiers. The interior minister owes an apology to the families of the thousands killed at the hands of the TTP, including the ones that very day when he carried on with his loose talk. Casual remarks like Mr Nisar Ali Khan’s indicate how poorly the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government is handling the war of words even as a military action against the TTP seems increasingly inevitable. For over a month, after the ...
Public's message for politicians (with English subtitles). If you cannot safeguard our basic right to live, then you are not fit to be our representatives. Get up and get to work, or get out! Pakistan is the country most affected by terrorism in the world after Iraq, but if the severity of the incidents is considered, it even surpasses the Middle Eastern nation. The total loss to economy in the last ten years because of terrorism is estimated at $78 billion. From 2001 to 2013, there were 13,721 incidents in Pakistan. From 2001 to 2005, there were 523 terrorist incidents in Pakistan but from 2007 to November 2013, the total number of incidents has risen to 13,198. Similarly, the number of suicide bombings between 2001 and 2007 stood at 15 only, but from 2007 to November last year, suicide attacks jumped to 358 – the highest anywhere in the world. Pakistan led the chart with 1,404 terrorist attacks in 2012, surpassing Iraq (1,271). Even Afghanistan was behind Pakistan at number three with 1,023 incidents. ...
"Balochistan issue & propagandists"" BRAINWASHING of people across Pakistan, both on provincial and national levels, is going on seemingly under a well-thought-out plan. For example, other parts of the country are injected with disinformation that the ongoing struggle in Balochistan is for the basic rights of the people as if there are enough rights or everything available to the people in Sindh’s interior, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata. On the provincial level, this brainwashing is extremely effective where the masses are fed with the fairytales of ‘Pakistan’s occupation’ of Balochistan. The propagandists do not use the term ‘forcible annexation’, which is unfairly propagated on the national television screens in Pakistan. In the province, it is even worse. This is carried out by different methods. There are anti-Pakistan books easily available in cities and districts of Balochistan, which support a different narration of history. The trend needs to be arrested by our policymakers. Ther ...
LAHORE: Forming a sort of anti-Taliban alliance, at least 50 Barelvi school of thought groups have demanded the government declare extremists as well as their supporters, whether political or religious, as enemies of the state and traitors. The demand came at a multi-party conference held under the banner of Tahaffuz Namoos-i- Risalat Mahaz here on Wednesday. MQM leader Abdul Haseeb, Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen leader Nasir Abbas Sherazi and a PML-Q delegation participated on special invitation. “Patronizing and supporting the Taliban should be declared a serious crime against the state and those found guilty of the criminal act be dealt with an iron hand and given exemplary punishment to eliminate militancy from the country,” read the joint communiqué issued at the end of the gathering. Opposing talks with the Taliban, it sought closure of the dialogue chapter for good since, what it said, the policy had badly failed and that an all-out war was the only option to establish peace. “Negotiations with ...

PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), which has been staging sit-ins to block the Nato supply to Afghanistan in protest against covert US drone strikes in the country, on Thursday announced an end to its campaign. The decision of the PTI, led by the cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan, came after a local court ruled on Tuesday that no private individual has a right to block or check vehicles on roads. “Given PTI's commitment to rule of law and respect for the senior judiciary, the Party will end its blockade of Nato supplies,” said a statement issued by the party. “The Core Committee felt that the pressure of the blockade had already resulted in a shift in the Obama Administration's drone policy and as a result drones had been stopped for the present,” it added. PTI set up the unofficial checkpoints on November 24 last year in the northwestern city of Peshawar, which is on the main route leading to Afghanistan and has been a key stop for vehicles carrying Nato supplies to the war-torn c ...

Gender discrimination is still a major problem in developed countries as much as in developing ones. Worse is the way it is seen as normal. Women are literally regarded as the shadows of men in many societies, and this outlandish notion has settled across the world, regardless of the levels of education. As a result of gender discrimination, women are deprived of essential services in society, living under unequal conditions with men, suffering from violence or being underrepresented in politics and the workforce. This also means that women are completely excluded from social life. This inequality can only be redressed by allowing women to assume as much responsibility as men. Societies need to work together to eliminate this discrimination, and for that to happen, it is essential to increase educational opportunities across the world, abandon demagogic talk, and remind people of the importance of equality, love and being human. In Islamic countries, explaining the importance of Koranic moral values could ...

Terror, talks and trepidation.Dr Mohammad Taqi They are fully aware that they gain nothing out of the talks except some time to plan and execute more attacks. Agreeing to a constitutional system in a nation state means the death of the TTP The spokesman for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Mohmand Agency wing, Muhammad Omar Khorasani, made a ghastly claim over this past weekend about how his group had killed 23 Frontier Corps (FC) soldiers it had held captive since June 14, 2010. In his statement, Khorasani pledged to release the footage of the killing and, within 48 hours, a TTP video surfaced showing several beheaded bodies, apparently of the FC men, being dumped on the roadside. The future of the Pakistani state’s negotiations with the Taliban, which have appeared all along like the government meekly pleading with terrorists, looks uncertain at the moment. However, equally uncertain is whether the Pakistani leadership at the helm in both Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and at the Centre will draw a line in t ...

Peshawar is the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), and the administrative centre and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated in a large valley near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, close to the Pak-Afghan border. Known as "City on the Frontier", Peshawar's strategic location on the crossroads of Central Asia and South Asia has made it one of the most culturally vibrant and lively cities in the greater region. Peshawar is irrigated by various canals of the Kabul River and by its right tributary, the Bara River. Peshawar has now evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities. In the last three decades, there has been a significant increase in urban population, in part due to internal migration of people in search of better employment opportunities, education, and services, and in part because of the influx of Afghans and other people displaced by military operations and ci ...

Khan Abdul Ghani Khan was born in Hashtnagar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (then NWFP), British India, modern day Charsadda, Village Utmanzai, Pakistan, the son of the Red-Shirt Leader Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan and older brother of Khan Abdul Wali Khan. His wife Roshan came from a Parsi family and was the daughter of Nawab Rustam Jang. He went to study at the art academy at Rabindranath Tagore’s university in Shantiniketan and developed a liking for painting and sculpture. He visited England and studied sugar technology in the United States, after which he returned to India and started working at the Takht Bhai Sugar Mills in 1933. Largely owing to his father’s influence, he was also involved in politics, supporting the cause of the Pashtuns of British India. He was arrested by the Government of Pakistan in 1948 – although he had given up politics by then – and remained in prison till 1954, in various jails all over the country. [Another promise fulfilled by PTI - Sehat ka Insaf] Dawns News link: chairman Imran Khan who inaugurated the anti-polio immunisation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa last month, has taken it as a challenge and vowed to eliminate the disease through his innovative programme ‘Sehat Ka Insaf’. The main points of “Sehat Ka Insaf” programme include free vaccination against nine vaccine preventable diseases, including tuberculosis, polio, diphtheria, pertusis, tetanus, hepatitis ‘B’, haemophilus influenza, pneumonia and measles besides distribution of public health messages at the doorsteps of people. The programme has replaced the polio campaigns as instead of running a polio-specific drive, the health workers will now target all nine vaccine-preventable diseases, including polio. Apparently, there is no role left for the UN agencies in the ‘Sehat Ka Insaf’ programme as it will be run by the provincial government. It will put an end to the public complaints that the donor agencies spend huge amount on the ...

TTP spokesperson Shahidullah Shahid, in a statement, said the political shura (council) of Taliban would guide the five-member committee nominated by it for the peace dialogue with the government, Dawn reported. The committee comprises Maulana Samiul Haq, cricketer-turned-politician and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan, Lal Masjid cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz, Jamaat-i-Islami's (JUI) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief Muhammad Ibrahim and Mufti Kifayatullah of the JUI-F, the report said. Punjab govt refuse US AID , Federal Govt takes US AID , PTI anti US , KPK Govt running US Projects : Ansar abbasi ISLAMABAD: Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif has said that no US aid, no matter how huge it is, would be accepted by the province till the complete halt of the drone strikes by Washington. “We have been refusing to accept US aid of hundreds of millions of dollars for the last two and half year and would continue to do so to register our protest against Washington’s drone policy,” Shahbaz Sharif said. The Punjab Chief Minister said this in response to a question raised by this correspondent as part of a study over the strange dichotomy in the strategies adopted by the Federal, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) governments against the US drones. The similar confusions are reflected in the policies of the two parties-the PML-N and the PTI-ruling the Centre, Punjab and KP. All the three governments are against the US drone strikes inside Pakistan. They also consider this policy of t ...

Photograph: Olivia Harris/Reuters An attempt to launch the memoir of the Pakistani schoolgirl who became a global icon after being shot in the head by the Taliban in her home province has been scuppered by opposition from local politicians. Malala Yousafzai's book was due to be launched at an event on Monday at Peshawar University but organisers were forced to scrap it after the intervention of two senior members of the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (KP). The episode underlines the antipathy among many Pakistanis towards the 16-year-old who campaigned for education in the face of Taliban opposition. While she has been hailed in the west for her campaign against extremism, in Pakistan she is widely regarded with suspicion, with many people believing conspiracy theories ...

IK, I used to be your fan January 16, 2014 MUJAHID TORWALI (Swat) Daily Times Sir: From the beginning I have been a big fan of Imran Khan and have wanted to see him as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. I completely supported Imran Khan in the general elections and ran a campaign for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) in PK-85, Swat. I was clearly aware of his mission and vision. However, after eight months, I have not noticed any change in the overall system of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government. I would like to explain the condition of an area where I have spent all my days and nights — Kedam UC Balakot district, Swat PK-85. There is no school for girls and boys, the road is as it was after the floods of 2010 and there are no drinking water facilities and electricity in the whole area. The people have been exploited many times by politicians — in the same way they have been exploited by Imran Khan and his team. Although the current MPA of the area is Saye Jafar Shah, as he was MPA previously for the sa ...

SOUTH ASIA BRIEF Pakistan Pakistani politicians targeted in weekend attacks At least eight people were killed in Pakistan over the weekend in back-to-back bombings that targeted politicians in the country's restive northwest region (RFE/RL). According to Pakistani officials, at least five police officers died on Sunday when a suicide bomber blew himself up near the convoy of Amir Muqam, an advisor to Pakistani Minister Nawaz Sharif, as he headed to a meeting in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (AP, ET, VOA). Minutes later, a remote-controlled device went off; Muqam, however, was unhurt. It was the first attack on a member of Sharif's party since he took office in June. In a separate incident on Sunday, Mian Mohammad Mushtaq, a provincial leader for the secular Pashtun Awami National Party, and two of his aides were killed when unidentified gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in Peshawar. No one has claimed responsibility for either attack. On Monday, a remote-controlled explosion disrupted the funeral prayers ...

THE REMAKING OF PPP By I.A. Rehman THE interest a large section of society showed in Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s speech of last Friday is understandable. The qualities of leadership he can display will be an important factor in the remaking of the Pakistan Peoples Party. One does not have to be a supporter of the PPP to realise that its resurrection is necessary for keeping alive the option of establishing egalitarian democracy. It is for the same reason one welcomes the signs of activism in left-of-centre groups, such as the campaign for land reforms of the Awami Workers’ Party and the decision of the Awami Party of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan’s National Party to work together. These efforts are welcome because the political landscape is now almost wholly occupied by rightist formations — from right and extreme right to militant right. In this situation there will be little room for welfarism, basic liberties will be at a discount, the space for civil society organisations is bound to shrink, ...

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan met with Nato envoys on Friday to clarify his party’s position on drones and the blockade of supplies through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Accompanied by Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Shireen Mazari and Naeemul Haq, the PTI chairman met the envoys during a dinner meeting at the residence of the Greek ambassador. “PTI does not want war with the US or NATO, but we need to send a clear message to the US that drones are destroying the very fabric of FATA and Khyber Pukhtunkhwa,” he said. According to a press release, Khan made it clear that it was in keeping with the electoral commitments made by the party on drones and the resolution passed by an all-parties conference, that the PTI had finally taken the action of stopping Nato supplies through KP. Had the government moved on furthering the APC mandate and made it clear to the US that drones were not acceptable, the PTI may not have been compelled to take the step of halting Nato supplies through KP, the rele ...

The blast resulted in the death of four personnel on board the vehicle including the BDU in-charge, while two others were injured. Shafqat Malik, bomb disposal chief of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, praised Haq as one of his best and most professional operatives. "We are losing our best officers. More than 10 officers of BDS (bomb disposal squad) have lost their lives while serving their motherland," Malik said. The MPhil/PhD students of various disciplines, who were enrolled in the three-six years degree programmes in 2011-12, said that the HEC deprived them of the Prime Minister scholarship scheme for the underdeveloped areas and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government ignored them in the ‘Naway Sahar Laptop Scheme’. Secularism Leading to Islamism: Tufail Ahmad | In South Asia, Islamist forces emerge out of the womb of secularism, or the practice and politics of it. In 2008, secular leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party and Awami National Party, which came to power in Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province through elections that year, signed an agreement with the Taliban led by Maulana Fazlullah for implementation of Islamic sharia rule in the Swat region. By early 2009, with the complicity of the secular leaders the Taliban were enforcing sharia code in the region, burning music CDs and DVDs, ordering barbers not to shave beards, preventing women from visiting bazaars and setting up sharia courts until they also ordered a total ban on female education — forcing the international community to take note of the modern-day barbarism, just hundred miles from Islamabad. “From barbarism to civilisation requires a century; from civilisation to barbarism needs but a day,” observed Will Durant, the American histor ...

We proud of you both sisters Gulalai Ismail & Saba Ismail... Before Malala Yousafzai, there were Gulalai and Saba Ismail. The Pakistani sisters grew up in the conservative Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, near the border with Afghanistan. At the ages of 16 and 15, respectively, Gulalai and Saba founded Aware Girls to empower young women. Initially, the organization taught girls about their rights and gave them strategies for negotiating with their families over issues like education. Malala was among Aware Girls' many mentees. The organization has since branched out explicitly into politics. In 2013, Aware Girls formed the first all-female observation team to monitor women's polling stations in Pakistan's spring election. And the sisters themselves have also broadened their own mission to include encouraging all Pakistani young people, not just women, to become more active citizens. For her efforts, Gulalai, now 26, was a recipient of the 2013 Democracy Award from the Washington-based National Endowment for D ...

"Mullah Fazlullah has decided to use Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as the headquarters of his terrorist outfit"
Need to step up efforts to restore peace Nek Muhammad from Ahmadzai Wazir tribe, Abdullah Mehsud and Baitullah Mehsud, all from South Waziristan (SW) were founding leaders of Pakistani Taliban and had drawn inspiration from Afghan Taliban. They rebelled against the State after regular troops entered SW in 2002 to flush out foreign terrorists and get hold of those who had harbored them. Prior to their movement, Maulana Sufi Muhammad led TNSM in Malakand Division was the first Islamic movement to raise the banner of Shariah in early 1990s. Afghans were also involved in the movement and it became so menacing that an operation led by IGFC Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) had to be launched in 1994. Movement died down after the government agreed to impose Shariah laws in Malakand. Later on Sufi along with his 15000 followers joined Afghan Taliban in their battle against US led invaders in October 2001. Most managed to trek back after ouster of Mullah Omar’s regime one month later. In 2007, Sufi’s firebrand son-in-l ...

Swat (pronounced [ˈsʋaːt̪], (Pashto:سوات, Urdu: سوات) is a valley and an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It is the upper valley of the Swat River, which rises in the Hindu Kush range. The capital of Swat is Saidu Sharif, but the main town in the Swat Valley is Mingora.[1] It was a princely state (see Swat (princely state)) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until it was dissolved in 1969. The valley is almost entirely populated by ethnic Pashtun Awankhel. The predominant language spoken in the valley is Pashto, while minor languages include Torwali and Kalami in Swat Kohistan.
Pakistan - extremism update - polio issues Extremist Epidemic Political instability, a fragile law and order situation, frail institutions and socio-political polarisation make the country a breeding ground for violent elements. These elements find humanitarian workers 'soft targets' because of their ubiquitous presence, especially in far-flung areas. A number of high-profile cases of kidnapping and killing of aid workers occurred in Pakistan in recent years, jeopardising the outreach of humanitarian organisations. -Naseer Memon, Chief Executive, Strengthening Participatory Organization (SPO) On November 30, 2013, unidentified militants shot dead a Police Officer and injured another while they were returning to the Police Station after their duty of protecting a team of polio workers in Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Though no outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, the 'masked brigade' of Islamist extremists, including elements from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pak ...
Pakistani activists have blocked the main supply route for provisions destined for Nato troops in Afghanistan to protest against US drone strikes. Opposition politician Imran Khan called for the action and said it would continue until American drone attacks in north-west Pakistan came to an end. He blames the drones for causing civilian deaths and for crushing any chance of peace with the Taliban. But the timing of the campaign has led many to accuse him of appeasement. It comes almost a month after Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud was killed in a drone strike at a compound in North Waziristan. He had given some indications he might be prepared to talk but his death reportedly came just a day before a team of mediators was due to meet him. His successor Mullah Fazlullah - a militant with a savage reputation - appears to have rejected any peace initiative. This blockade is centred on a road in Pakistan's north-western Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which is used to ferry goods to and from Afghanista ...
YESTERDAY: Malala Yousafzai who was injured in an attack by Taliban was honoured with Sakharov Award. TODAY: A drone attack on a religious school by United States in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, outside tribal area, killed at least 4 INNOCENT STUDENTS and 2 TEACHERS.
Our Education hero of the week is Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani school pupil and education activist from the town of Mingora in the Swat District of Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. She is known for her activism for rights to education and for women, especially in the Swat Valley, where the Taliban had at times banned girls from attending school. In early 2009, at the age of 11–12, Yousafzai wrote a blog under a pseudonym for the BBC detailing her life under Taliban rule, their attempts to take control of the valley, and her views on promoting education for girls. On 9 October 2012, Yousafzai was shot in the head and neck in an assassination attempt by Taliban gunmen while returning home on a school bus. In the days immediately following the attack, she remained unconscious and in critical condition, but later her condition improved enough for her to be sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England, for intensive rehabilitation. On 12 October, a group of 50 Islamic cler ...
Peace process droned Prior to and during general election campaign in 2013, the TTP militants stepped up attacks against pro-US and anti-Taliban liberal political parties and spared the conservative parties like PML-N, PTI, JUI and JI that were soft towards the Taliban and were desirous of peace talks to end the war. When liberal parties excepting MQM were routed in May 11 elections and PML-N formed governments in the centre and Punjab and coalition government in Balochistan and PTI led the coalition government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), apparently the ground looked leveled for talks between the government and TTP. However, death of pro-peace Waliur Rahman, deputy of Hakeemullah Mehsud, along with his six close companions by a drone on May 30 vitiated the atmosphere. It was a setback for the pro-talks elements within TTP and for the government since it further hardened the stance of anti-peace hardliners in TTP led by Hakimullah to avenge Wali’s death. Nawaz Sharif’s offer of talks to the militants s ...
Fazlullah has Mulla Omar’s backing The News November 08, 2013 ISLAMABAD The selection of the Afghanistan-based Mullah Fazlullah as the first non-Mehsud Ameer of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) could not have materialised without the backing of the Ameer of the Afghan Taliban Mulla Mohammad Omar, well-informed sources in the establishment have disclosed. According to the militant circles in the tribal belt, the selection of a non-Mehsud who comes from the Swat district of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, unlike Baitullah Mehsud and Hakimullah Mehsud who belonged to the Waziristan Agency of Fata, seems to be an attempt to avoid a major split in the TTP. In fact, the Hakimullah group of TTP had already chosen Sheharyar Mehsud alias Shahbaz as the Ameer of their faction in North Waziristan and were backing his candidature for the slot of the TTP Ameer. On the other hand, another powerful faction of the TTP had been backing the candidature of Said Khan Mehsud alias Khalid Sajna, the Ameer of the South Waziristan ...
