Did something I rarely do today. Went to an afternoon movie. Not just any movie though. The newly restored "Lawrence of Arabia" at The Belcourt. Almost 4 hours, a box of popcorn, an intermission walk next door to buy a book, and a bag of M&M's later and I was exhilarated, exhausted and inspired. Might be my new (old) favorite movie of all time. Go see the restored film at a theater. It's worth the entire afternoon
Kanye's Jetsons might actually be my most anticipated upcoming movie. It's either that or a new Kenneth Lonergan film.
"MARGARET": Complex film about life in New York when everything is turned upside down. Sort of like my So Called Life on steroids. Anna Paquin and a great cast bring out all the flaws of life and somehow weave it into stinging patch-quilt of life on the line. Someone said it is more like a French film. I think it has the best High School classroom discussion wrangling that ever went on. The students and the children are brighter than their parents and teachers. Though, everyone gets a shot at being someone of value and importance until they fall on their human bottoms. Some get up again. And it is not your Woody Allen New York. It is far darker. Slow-mo? It is like those silent underwater ballets. Cellphones exist, but they don't drive the plot. Director: Kenneth Lonergan. Not for the squeamish.
"Margaret," a film by Kenneth Lonergan, was made in 2005, but not released until 2011. It's obvious that there were editing problems, which were that much worse for watching the 3-hour "Director's cut." The actors, including Anna Paquin, Matt Damon and Mark Ruffalo, are all excellent, but it is an extremely difficult film to watch. At times, I found myself shouting at the screen--a bad sign. The story centers around Lisa, a bright 17-year-old NYC high school student, who feels partially to blame for a terrible traffic accident, in which a woman dies in her arms. She starts acting out, doing drugs, losing her virginity, seducing her geometry teacher (who may or not be the father of the baby she aborts), but still trying to find justice for the woman's death. It's an extremely powerful film which bears watching, but not for the squeamish. (There is a beautiful bit filmed at the Metropolitan Opera, with Renée Fleming.) See the theatrical version--it's only 2.5 hours long.
3 hours of Kenneth Lonergan is a lot of Kenneth Lonergan. Also, this movie has a scene where for some reason Matthew Broderick vehemently rejects a high school student's interpretation of King Lear by saying "That's just not what Shakespeare meant." How do we feel about this, Hannah Bisewski, Laura Zlatos, Dianne Nora Barnacle et al?
Three actors have decided to earn their own Off-Broadway credit by self-producing an incredible play by Kenneth Lonergan.
I never hated George W. Bush as much as I hated Kenneth Lonergan's "Margaret."
THANKS TO DARRAGH O’DONOGHUE, who puts DAMSELS at the top of his list-- Top 5: Damsels in Distress (2011, Whit Stillman) “Sensible” people are irritated that Stillman films seem to be aimed solely at readers of the New Yorker. In fact, they belong to a radical, comic tradition of rigorous mise en scène, formalised talk and philosophical heft that includes Oliveira, Rohmer, Rivette and Eugène Green. Into the Abyss (Werner Herzog, 2011) Margaret (Kenneth Lonergan, 2011) Rowdy Rathore (Prabhu Deva, 2012) Tabu (Miguel Gomes, 2012)

Review for Kenneth Lonergan's Margaret starring Anna Paquin; Matt Damon; Matthew Broderick; and Mark Ruffalo on DVD
David Edelstein says the extended cut of Kenneth Lonergan's second film is "as close to a masterpiece as any American film in a decade." Never widely screened, the film, starring Anna Paquin, is out now on DVD. (Recommended)
The Gettysburg Address is pretty good but all I've really wanted to do is write dialogue like Kenneth Lonergan.
It's a poorly directed and edited film that exists solely to give voice to every inane and pretentious thought in Kenneth Lonergan's head.

Anna Paquin and her husband, Stephen Moyer, stuck together last night to attend an event at LA's LACMA in honor of her movie Margaret. The movie, which was actually filmed back in 2005, finally came out this year after a long period of negotiations between director Kenneth Lonergan and Fox, the movie studio backing the project. Margaret was in theaters for just one week last Fall and then again for a week earlier this year in LA. Now, a push from critics supporting the picture, which also stars Mark Ruffalo and Matt Damon, has allowed Kenneth to create a three-hour version for DVD that was released last Tuesday. Yesterday, Anna and Kenneth attended a screening of the new cut and did a Q&A afterward. Anna's no stranger to talking up her projects, as she also hit Comic-Con over the weekend. Anna and Stephen shared secrets about the new season of True Blood alongside the series' creator, Alan Ball.
