APC Presidential Candidate’s life, education, career, and vintage pictures BY LAWRENCE ENYIOGHASU Well, not exactly the untold story of former military head of state and Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). It is more like Muhammadu Buhari’s ‘unknown’ story, as not many Nigerians are familiar with the book written by Rosaline Odeh, the then Head of Research and Documentation Section, Federal Department of Information, in May 1984. The book, Muhammadu Buhari: Nigeria’s Seventh Head of State, was published by the Federal Department of Information, Domestic Publicity Division, Ikoyi Road, Lagos. It is in seven chapters of 95 pages, and details the early life, educational qualifications, career, and thoughts of the then head of state. Chapter 1 is on parentage and background of the Daura, Katsina State-born retired military officer and politician. He was the 13th and last child of his mother, and also the last of his father’s 23 children. Gen. Buhari’s father was Hardo ...
Gen.Muhammadu Buhari. Sir, let us examine your service records. I consider your generation a very privileged one, indeed. In 1975 at the age of 33, you were appointed the Military Governor of the North-Eastern State, present day Borno & Yobe states. In 1976 at the age of 34 you became the Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources. In 1978 at the age of 36 you became the Chairman of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Today the reverse is the case. Most Nigerians at age of 35 are still unemployed and still living with parents. Many are still not married. During your time you were already Governor at this age. One major reason for this unfortunate turn of events is that many elders like you have refused to voluntarily handover the baton to the next generation. Life should be a relay race where one runs his race and hands over to the next. In Nigeria many elders like you have run their races and are still holding on tenaciously to the baton. But Sir, I have an important question here for yo ...

Former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari does not seem to know when to quit. Defeated in the last two elections, first by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003 and then by President Umaru Yar'Adua in 2007, he has returned to contest Nigeria's highest office. Mr Buhari is now facing defeat against the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, who is from Nigeria's southern Niger Delta region. Mr Buhari had been hoping that dissatisfied members from the northern hierarchy of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP), would shift their loyalty to him. Many members of the northern hierarchy feel it is "their turn" to hold the presidency, after President Yar'Adua, who is from the same northern state as Mr Buhari, died in office. Although Mr Buhari is popular among the poor of the north (known as the "talakawa" in the north's Hausa language) mere popularity on the streets does not seem to have been enough. Suspicion A Muslim from Daura in Katsina State, who has given his support to Sharia law in the north, Mr Buhari ...

What I saw in Katsina Katsina has demonstrated that there are dividends in democracy –Secretary to the State Government of Katsina. It was my first time in Katsina. I received my nomination to attend the 9th National Delegate Conference of Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria with mixed feelings. I had heard so much about Katsina State, the home of the former Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. Travelling is said to be part of education but I would rather be excused from travelling to a place where unknown gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram just launched an offensive. It was reported that on Thursday, May 16, 2013, the insurgents invaded Daura divisional police station and raided four commercial banks. I was therefore apprehensive about my safety. Well, I summoned courage and left for the town. I arrived at Katsina safely in the evening of Monday, May 27 and immediately went to town looking for where to recharge ...

President Goodluck Jonathan emergence as the ruler of the country was equally fated that it is needless recounting the already familiar tale. Jonathan, the second Southerner to rule the country under democracy is from Ijaw ethnic group. From the foregoing, the North, since independence, has ruled Nigeria under democratic and military regimes. The first Prime Minister of Nigeria, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa from Bauchi ruled the country from October 1, 1960 to January 15, 1966. Gen. Yakubu Gowon from Plateau State toppled Ironsi’s regime and ruled from July 29, 1966 to 1975 when he was ousted from power by Murtala Muhammed. Obasanjo entered in 1976 following Muhammed’s death and handed over power to the first civilian executive President of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Shagari from Sokoto State. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari from Katsina State toppled Shagari’s government in 1983 and became the Head of State. He too was toppled by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida from Niger State.
