Former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari does not seem to know when to quit. Defeated in the last two elections, first by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003 and then by President Umaru Yar'Adua in 2007, he has returned to contest Nigeria's highest office. Mr Buhari is now facing defeat against the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, who is from Nigeria's southern Niger Delta region. Mr Buhari had been hoping that dissatisfied members from the northern hierarchy of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP), would shift their loyalty to him. Many members of the northern hierarchy feel it is "their turn" to hold the presidency, after President Yar'Adua, who is from the same northern state as Mr Buhari, died in office. Although Mr Buhari is popular among the poor of the north (known as the "talakawa" in the north's Hausa language) mere popularity on the streets does not seem to have been enough. Suspicion A Muslim from Daura in Katsina State, who has given his support to Sharia law in the north, Mr Buhari ...
Katsina 2015: Can APC Dislodge PDP? The political atmosphere in Katsina State is becoming tense by the day as the 2015 elections draw closer. The opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) is insisting that it is all out to wrest power from the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP). In this piece, MUAZU ELAZEH examines the shape of things to come and asks the fundamental question; Can APC make good its threat? As we edge closer to the much awaited 2015 general election, Katsina state is witnessing what could mildly be described as subtle political realignment with different political camps engaging in high stake lobbying and bridge building, all in the bid to control power come 2015. In the face of this high stake lobbying, is on one side, the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which is *** bent on continuing with its ruling streaks and, on the other side, the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC), which appears determined to put an end to the long years of PDP rule. Katsina state, with a p . ...

Update: PDP Oyinlola crisis, the battle for 2015 begins Sani Tukur - 18 hours ago NATIONAL, NEWS The sack of Oyinlola appears to have shut all doors to peace efforts at resolving the PDP crisis. Bamanga Tukur, the embattled chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, pulled a surprise punch Monday, swearing in a replacement for the party secretary, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, in a festering party crisis pitting him and President Goodluck Jonathan, against state governors and former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
