It is often said that if something is repeated often enough, it becomes accepted as true. This has certainly been the case for the link between terrorism and the poaching of elephants for the ivory trade. A wide range of public figures have repeated the claim that ivory plays a major role in bankrolling terrorist organizations in Africa. These include former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton, UK foreign secretary William Hague and Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta. The most recent voice to be added to the choir was that of cinema Director Kathryn Bigelow. The Oscar-winning director teamed up with charity WildAid to create a short video asserting that trade in ivory is funding the Somali terrorist group al-Shabaab, responsible for the 2013 Westgate Mall attack in Kenya in which 67 people died. As with any illegal activity, it is very difficult to obtain reliable data on the size of the ivory trade. Although there is evidence that it has been used to finance armed groups in Africa such as the Lord’s ...

For the past couple weeks, Army sergeant Bowe Bergdahl has been the focus of headlines and 24-hour cable news networks after the United States government exchanged five captured, high-ranking Taliban operatives in order to get the captured American prisoner of war back from Taliban captivity. However, controversy has erupted with accusations of Bergdahl deserting his base voluntarily, questioning the war in which he was fighting, not to mention the supposed value of the prisoners who were exchanged in order to get him back. Now the news story has proven to be provocative enough for two feature films. More below! Deadline has word that Zero Dark Thirty Director Kathryn Bigelow is looking to reteam with writer and producer Mark Boal for a drama about Bergdahl's struggle and the ensuing controversy. But they're not the only ones. Little Children director Todd Field is also attached to direct a film being set up at Fox Searchlight with the acquisition of America's Last Prisoner of ...

If you were going to teach a course on gender in Hollywood film from the post-World War Two period to the present, what films and directors would you choose? Besides Ida Lupino, Gerd Oswald, Jacques Tourneur, Max Ophuls, Todd Haynes, and Kathryn Bigelow?
Although you wouldn't necessarily know it from all the ads for movies with digital animals, super heroes (animated and otherwise), and alleged human beings outrunning fireballs, this is a golden age of American movies comparable to the 60s and 70s (and a golden age of television, for that matter: Mad Men, The Sopranos, The Good Wife, etc). The brilliant actors are so numerous it's hard to single a few out. The same could almost be said for directors, but here's a sampling: the Coen brothers (Inside Llewyn Davis, A Serious Man, No Country for Old Men, Fargo.), Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom, The Royal Tenenbaums), Alexander Payne (Nebraska, Sideways, About Schmidt, Election), Paul Greengrass (at last putting his immense skills for visceral action to great use in Captain Phillips), Paul Thomas Anderson (who got it all together for There Will Be Blood, even if he lost it in The Master), Spike Jonze (Her, Adaptation, Being John Malkovich), Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hu .. ...
I watched 'Zero Dark Thirty' by Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow. It's the story of the CIA's successful hunt for Osama Bin Laden. The movie holds close to truth about the process with the exception of one slightly troubling detail. The place that OBL was holed up in was a former CIA safehouse. (This story was widely reported from a number of sources at the time of OBL death. It was 'pulled' after the first day and now there is no mention of it. Not even to refute the claim) Now what are the odds the Bin Laden would just randomly choose an old CIA haunt? I would guess 1 to infinity times infinity. All of the locals would have known what it was. Why would you put yourself in a place where you knew the people that are tracking you probably have construction documents including floor plans, where all the entrances are, thickness of the walls, your probable location within the facility, etc? Well you wouldn't. Unless you are being handled and told that it would be a safe house for you. And now who would be the on ...

Did you know: Kathryn Bigelow was the first woman to win an Academy Award for Best Director for her work with 'The Hurt Locker' (2008).
For Muir, the key consideration is the fearlessness the right artist can bring to cinema: "This is the route, we should remember, that gave us not only the first black director to win the best film Oscar, but also the first woman to win an Oscar. Kathryn Bigelow, who won in 2009 for The Hurt Locker, was a painter and conceptual artist before she made Strange Days and Point Break with Keanu Reeves. She was one of the first artists to cross over into narrative film. Both these artists have pushed things in film because that is what artists do."
The Weight of Water 1.5/4 Kathryn Bigelow's film is a bit of a mess. It's hard to care about any of the people. The story follows a journalist that travels to an island with her husband, brother in law and his girlfriend (played by Catherine McCormack, Sean Penn, Josh Lucas and Elizabeth Hurley) to do a story of a long ago murder. There are flashbacks that show what happened but they too are somewhat convoluted and boring. The only person worth watching is Sarah Polley as one of the women from the past.

2.5 out of 5 for Lone Survivor. The material was brilliant, but the execution was shabby to say the least. This should have been directed by Kathryn Bigelow, not Peter Berg of Battleship infamy. I'll still call it one of the better war films of the past decade, because despite depending on its director's style over substance presentation and the limited abilities of its actors, Wahlberg and Kitsch, I wasn't left pulling my hairs apart. Largely because the film does have a few interesting scenes. I've hardly ever seen the camera move wrong in Hollywood War films. The editing is passable. The music isn't bad either. Billed as "the story of history's greatest manhunt for the world's most dangerous man", the film dramatizes the decade-long manhunt for al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. This search eventually leads to the discovery of his compound in Pakistan, and the military raid on it that resulted in his death in May 2011. The film stars Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Ehle, Mark Strong, Kyle Chandler, Édgar Ramírez and James Gandolfini.[4][5] It was produced by Boal, Bigelow, and Megan Ellison, and was independently financed by Ellison's Annapurna Pictures. The film had its premiere in Los Angeles, California on December 19, 2012 and had its wide release on January 11, 2013.[6] Zero Dark Thirty received wide critical acclaim, and was nominated for five Academy Awards at the 85th Academy Awards, including ...

LONDON – Keanu Reeves, star of Universal’s “47 Ronin,” has nixed any chance of toplining a remake of “Point Blank,” the cult 1991 surfing action movie. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, helmer of Oscar-...

New Records Show: Panetta Revealed "Top Secret" Information to Hollywood Filmmaker The Obama administration has a very simple flow chart for the release of government information. Does the information make the administration look good? If "yes," then release. If "no" then keep secret and stonewall. This policy - certainly not Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) or the president's many promises of transparency - provides the guiding principle for government bureaucrats responding to open records requests. And this is why we are in federal court so often. Take, for example, the Obama administration's "role" in producing the film "Zero Dark Thirty." This movie, directed by Academy Award winning filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow and written by Mark Boal, glowingly showed Obama as an in-command president during the bin Laden raid. The film was originally set to hit theaters just prior to the 2012 elections, ostensibly to aid the Obama re-election efforts, but the premiere was delayed after the filmmakers sustained heavy ...
i have a goid understanding of myself .. gifts of highly sensitive people The trait of high sensitivity also includes a strong tendency to be aware of nuances in meaning, and to be more cautious about taking action, and to more carefully consider options and possible outcomes. 3. Emotional awareness We also tend to be more aware of our inner emotional states, which can make for richer and more profound creative work as writers, musicians, actors or other artists. A greater response to pain, discomfort, and physical experience can mean sensitive people have the potential, at least, to take better care of their health. 4. Creativity Psychologist Elaine Aron, author of The Highly Sensitive Person, estimates about twenty percent of people are highly sensitive, and seventy percent of those are introverted, which is a trait that can also encourage creativity. As examples, there are many actors who say they are shy, and Director Kathryn Bigelow, who recently won an Academy Award, has said, “I’m kind of very ...

First Hurt Locker and now Zero Dark Thirty! You are simply amazing Kathryn Bigelow!!!
You know what's really sad? I'm doing a stats project and I'm looking up how many women directed movies in 2012 that made it into the top 100 category based on gross production and I made it to without seeing any women representing! Thank you to Kathryn Bigelow to being the first woman on that list who directed entirely on her own! Props to Brenda Chapman who co-directed Brave witha male and it made it to need more women in the film industry who are directing!
Hey, remember when Kathryn Bigelow blocked me and I said "let it be known". :-)
