THIS WEEK IN CYBERPRO BY CHARLES WINSTEAD, NATIONAL SECURITY CYBERSPACE INSTITUTE, INC. There have been some very significant happenings on the cybersecurity front during the first month of 2013, including the discovery of a new cyberespionage campaign, continued attacks on US financial institutions, new vulnerabilities discovered in Java, and serious calls for increased security for firms owning much of the critical US infrastructure. Researchers at Kaspersky Labs say that a group of Russia-speaking cybercriminals has been stealing data from governments, embassies, and aerospace and research institutions around the world for about five years now. Roel Schouwenberg, a Senior Researcher with Kaspersky, told reporters "These guys knew very much what they were after." Kaspersky released a report this week focused on what they call Operation "Red October," and about the Russian malware called Rocra (page 38). The malware is very pervasive, according to cyber experts. “With Rocra, the attackers managed to st ...
Malware Campaign Targeted World Governments = Famous anti-virus company, Kaspersky Labs, has unearthed a new malware campaign named Red October. The latter is harvesting classified data from targets like nation states and sensitive corporations throughout the world. Red October, also referred to as Rocra, is stealing encrypted login information from the high security targets. It is believed to primarily target former USSR republics and countries in Central Asia. However, the security experts pointed out that actually no nation is immune, with known infections around the globe. Kaspersky Labs explained that the virus, which has been lurking for 5 years already, contains strong technical evidence which reveals that the attackers have Russian-speaking origins. It has also infiltrated smartphones to harvest data. The malware has mainly focused on diplomatic and government agencies of different countries throughout the globe, but also targets other companies, including research institutions, aerospace, militar ...
A major cyber-attack that may have been stealing confidential documents since 2007 has been discovered by Russian researchers. Kaspersky Labs told the BBC the malware targeted government institutions such as embassies, nuclear research centres and oil and gas institutes. It was designed to steal encrypted files - and was even able to recover files that had been deleted. One expert described the attack find as "very significant". "It appears to be trying to suck up all the usual things - word documents, PDFs, all the things you'd expect," said Prof Alan Woodward, from the University of Surrey. "But a couple of the file extensions it's going after are very specific encrypted files." In a statement, Kaspersky Labs said: "The primary focus of this campaign targets countries in Eastern Europe, former USSR Republics, and countries in Central Asia, although victims can be found everywhere, including Western Europe and North America. "The main objective of the attackers was to gather sensitive documents from the ...

First malware ever found in iOS App Store, malicious app removed By Rick Burgess On July 6, 2012, 3:00 PM EST For the first time, according to Kaspersky Labs, security researchers have unearthed what appears to be malware on the Apple App Store. "Find and Call", a Russian-language app which touted contact list simplification, was discovered to be a little too interested in its users' contact lists. Security experts discovered that Find and Call would upload the victim's entire address book and GPS coordinates to a remote server, and then proceed to spam all of their contacts. Apple quickly pulled the app, citing guidelines which prohibit app makers from uploading contacts to remote servers. However, this is not the first time an app from the App Store has quietly stolen address books from unsuspecting iPhone and iPad users. Path, a popular social photo-taking app, was busted last year by an observant developer who noticed the app was sending more data to third-party servers than it should have. It was dis ...
