Dang it. Im gonna bite the bullet and make these "Pop Culture" based 2015 Resolutions (as opposed to my Life's Path Resolutions on my previous post) 1. Read those larger/longer books collecting dust on my bookshelf: "The Passage" by Justin Cronin, "Infinite Jest" by David Foster Wallace, "The Great Bridge" by David McCullough and "Fall Of Giants" by Ken Follett 2. Watch every James Bond film in chronological order finally (w/ David Marinoff) 3. Watch every episode of Seinfeld in chronological order (w/ David when he can) 4. Finally watch via Netflix "Apocalypse Now", "Sybil", "Taxi Driver" and "Blazing Saddles" 5. Go to SxSW (South by Southwest)- even if for just a long weekend.

Quote by: Justin Cronin: I was very much a child of the Cold War.
Okay, so I've seen a lot a famous authors give talks and do readings. Justin Cronin, Fannie Flagg, George R R Martin, and Neil Gaiman, to name a few. I saw Susan Cooper (who wrote "The Dark Is Rising Sequence") this afternoon, and it was far an away the best author talk I'd ever been to. She started talking about her life walking to school during WWII with a gas mask over her shoulder, told us how her mother would read to her brother and her by candlelight in their bomb shelter, then talked about her college years at Oxford, where she was taught by Professors J R R Tolkien and C S Lewis, then about her job working for a London newspaper, where she worked for Ian Fleming (who was writing the James Bond novels in his spare time), then about working as a journalist covering the trial of Jack Ruby (the guy who shot Lee Harvey Oswald), and THEN she started writing novels full time. She was mesmerizing.
4 concluding parts of book series are finally being published this year! Dreams of Gods and Monsters - Laini Taylor - April 17 (Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy), City of Heavenly Fire - Cassandra Clare - May 27 (The Mortal Instruments series), The Book of Life - Deborah Harkness - July 15 (A Discovery of Witches trilogy), The City of Mirrors - Justin Cronin - October 23rd (The Passage trilogy). So that's angels and chimera; angels, demons, downworlders and shadowhunters; vampires, witches and demons (oh my); and hardcore scary virus induced definitely not even remotely glittery post apocalyptic insane vampires. I think this probably says quite an awful lot about me? :) Now if only Mr George RR Martin would hurry up his awesomeness I could add dragons and white walkers to the list.
My recent top 10 list (in no particular order) for Karla Friscia, Hard to narrow it down! 1. Earth Abides by George Stewart. Oldie but goodie sci fi set in the Bay Area. 2. State of Wonder by Ann Patchett. She is a new favorite. Also like the Magicians Assistant. 3. Mr penumbras 24 hour bookstore by Robin Sloan-- Fun mystery involving old books and Google nerds. 4. Ocean at the end of the LAne - new Neil Gaiman. Nuff said! 5. The Twelve - Justin Cronin. A twist on "vampires" involving military-developed virus. More like I am Legend than Dracula. 6. A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. Love Irving's weirdness! 7. The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt. Wild West historical fiction where a hired gun develops a conscience. 8. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. magical and wonderful 9. Flight behavior by Barbara Kingsolver. I love everything she writes even nonfiction. Animal, vegetable and Miracle is a great story of how her family tried to eat all locally for an entire year. 10. A Discovery of Witc .. ...

My name is Sera, and I confess that I am a Chess Club addict. The novel was first uploaded months ago on a website called WritersCafe.org, a website for unpublished authors to get their work seen. It goes without saying that much of it isn't very good, though once in a long while you stumble onto something special. THE CHESS CLUB was special. I read the first chapter out of simple boredom. In the space of three days, I read all twenty-nine chapters. I fell in love with Vivian van Valen. I pictured my own crush as Elijah Beaumont and one of my good guy friends as Dominic Beaumont. And like most girls probably I saw a lot of myself in Nicolle Darling. I wrote him a quick review that read, "without question, this is the best book I have ever read, from the very first page to the last. You will not be sorry you gave it a chance. Let's cross our fingers and pray he writes more." I was happy to see him list it along the rest of his reviews, all of them being very good reviews. He saw that I was a fan and asked ...

Word from the workers of the National Book Festival: Linda Ronstadt, Margaret Atwood, Joyce Carol Oates, James McBride, and Justin Cronin are very sweet, humble people. Justin signed autographs good-humoredly despite a broken arm!.One children's author was hateful and demanding. Giada was nada, yelling at her publicist and at our Community Relations manager that they had not ordered enough of her cookbooks---perhaps her publicist's fault because he'd absolutely refused to communicate with our CRM! Besides, Giada was refusing to sign cookbooks brought prepaid by her fans, stating repeatedly she would sign only children's books. "I don't have any children," one irate customer returning a cookbook told me she'd told Giada.to no avail. Our CRM didn't know this, expressing gratitude to me for these "returning" customers' feedback.so she can report the other side of the story to corporate.
The passage by Justin Cronin is a very good read.
