Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (September 8, 1828 – February 24, 1914), born as Lawrence Joshua Chamberlain, was an American college professor from the State of Maine, who volunteered during the American Civil War to join the Union Army. Started in Portland, moved up to Brunswick and Bowdoin College where Joshua Chamberlain left as a young professor to join the 20th Maine Infantry during the Civil War, rising through the ranks to lead the 20th at Gettysburg where he won the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroics on Little Roundtop, on to Division command, a severe wound at the front of his division in Petersburg and was given the honor to receive the Confederate surrender at Appomattox...Returned to become president of Bowdoin and then elected 4 terms Governor of Maine...one of my real heroes...Also mastered 13 languages! ...

The Battle of Gettysburg 150th Anniversary July 2, 1863: The second day of battle centers largely on the left flank of the Union army, at the south end of Cemetery Ridge. Robert E. Lee sends a corps commanded by General James Longstreet forward to break the Union lines there. Longstreet, though, needed time to move his men to their jumping off points, so the major fighting did not begin until about 4 pm. Fighting in a peach orchard and in a rocky area known as Devil's Den was brutal and savage. At the very end of the Union lines was a hill called Little Round Top. This was defended by the 20th Maine under the command of Col. Joshua Chamberlain (who before the war had been a professor of Rhetoric at Bowdoin College in Maine). Knowing that if the hill fell, the Rebels could conceivable overrun the Union army from the flank, Chamberlain led his men in a determined defense against the attacking Confederates.
