10 games to circle on the Red Sox' 2014 schedule. March 31: at Orioles The season is opening early this year, with the Red Sox leaving Fort Myers on March 29, skipping their customary (and pointless) exhibition in some far-flung big-league park to jump right into the season. Title defenses have to start somewhere, and this will be it, presumably with Jon Lester on the mound. April 4: vs. Brewers Someone ready that gigantic American flag for the Monster, because the Red Sox will be receiving their rings before the home opener against their former AL East rivals, who left the division 20 years ago now. Expect lots of pomp and circumstance and sky-high ticket prices on the secondary market. April 10: at Yankees The Yankees are back to their profligate ways and the centerpiece of their wild offseason spending spree was none other than Center Fielder Jacoby Ellsbury. The former Red Sox stalwart will make his first appearance in pinstripes against his former team, but at least in the (relative) safety of the Br ...
MLB-With the 2013 World Series title under their collective belts, the real off-season work begins for the Boston Red Sox. They picked up staff ace Jon Lester's $13M option for next year and made qualifying offers to first baseman Mike Napoli, centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury and shortstop Stephen Drew. They did not make a qualifying offer to catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, meaning he will go to free agency.
As of the World Series ending, SS Stephen Drew, OF Jacoby Ellsbury, RHP Joel Hanrahan, 1B Mike Napoli, and C Jarrod Saltalamacchia became free agents. The Red Sox retain their rights until Nov. 5, at which point they can sign with any team. The Red Sox hold 2014 contract options on two players: LHP Jon Lester for $13 million (or a $250,000 buyout) and LHP Matt Thornton for $6 million (or a $1 million buyout). Those decisions are expected by 11:59 p.m. on Saturday. The Red Sox also have decisions to make on arbitration-eligible players. That group includes RHP Andrew Bailey, LHP Andrew Miller, LHP Franklin Morales and 1B-OF Mike Carp. Here is a list of important dates coming up: Nov. 4: 5 p.m. (ET) Deadline for teams to make qualifying offers (one year, $14.1 million) to their eligible former players who became free agents. Nov. 5: Free agents eligible to sign with any team. Nov. 11: 5 p.m. (ET) deadline for free agents to accept qualifying offers; BBWAA Jackie Robinson Rookies of the Year announced. Nov. ...
A list of former Sea Digs who are in this World Series. Well, Ortiz DID play here for rehab. Hope this list encourages more folks to come to Sea Dogs games next year (and help the Ronald McDonald House parking fundraiser). Boston: Pitchers: Ryan Dempster, Clay Buchholtz, Felix Doubront, Jon Lester, Junichi Tazawa and Brandon Workman. Infield: Xander Bogaerts, Will Middlebrooks and Dustin Pedroia. Outfield: Jacoby Ellsbury, Daniel Nava and David Ortiz.
Jacoby Ellsbury is from Madras OR about 100 miles away, and a member of the Warm Springs tribe. Jon Lester is from Tacoma. Shane Victorino is from my 2nd home, Maui HI. Big Papi is one of the nicest guys in baseball. Why do I detest the RedSox except when they are eliminating the evil Yanks? I guess it's their whiney fans and Dustin Pedroia. Anyway, it's anyone but Boston for me in this year's playoffs.
Here's a look at the playoff experience of the Red Sox: 66 games: David Ortiz. He's a .283 hitter in the postseason with 12 homers and 47 RBIs. His 57 postseason games for the Red Sox are second only to Jason Varitek's team-record 63. 46 games: Shane Victorino. The Flyin' Hawaiian played plenty of October games for the Phillies. He's a .269 hitter in the postseason with six homers and 30 RBIs. 32 games: Mike Napoli. He has been to the postseason six times in eight seasons and hit .272. 28 games: Dustin Pedroia. He has hit a modest .252 in the postseason and is 5 of his last 27. 22 games: Jacoby Ellsbury: Since bursting onto the scene in 2007, he has hit .261 in the postseason. Seeking his first home run. 14 games: John Lackey. The righthander was a regular visitor to the postseason with the Angels, going 3-4 with a 3.12 ERA, 12 games: Stephen Drew. He has hit .320 in the postseason with an .898 OPS. 11 games: Quintin Berry: He played a lot for Detroit last season, but was 5 for 26. 8 games: Jon Lester and ...
Jon Lester and John Lackey are currently in line to start Games 1 and 2 of the ALDS for the Red Sox.Red Sox manager John Farrell is "optimistic" that Jacoby Ellsbury can return to the lineup on Wednesday.
Only six players remain from the Red Sox last playoff game win on Oct. 18, 2008: Clay Buchholz, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jon Lester, David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia and David Ross. Game 1 of the ALDS is October 4th. Game on!
BOSTON, MA— Jacoby Ellsbury is a mercenary, and we don’t mean that as a pejorative. It has been apparent since Ellsbury burst onto the scene in 2007 that he would not be signing an extension with the Red Sox unless and until he reached free agency. While teammates Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz and Kevin Youkilis chose security over hitting the lotto, Ellsbury went year-to-year in arbitration, content to work his way toward freedom, and confident enough in his abilities to make the gambit worthwhile. And so here we are six years later, with free agency only months away, and the clock on Ellsbury’s Red Sox career ticking to zero. If this is indeed it for the leadoff hitter, sparkplug, and (for one season, anyway) superstar, the final three months of the season should be interesting ones. If he has indeed been angling all along for free agency, then he knows how important it is to finish strong. “It’s just a matter of him staying focused,” said teammate Shane Victorino, who admits his ...
RUMBLE IN THE BRONX The Boston Red Sox head into NYC tonight to face those dastardly Yankees. The Bosox lead their division, two games ahead of the Yanks, and have a strong shot at winning tonight, with their ace, Jon Lester, on the mound. Last night, during an interleague game with the Phillies, Boston's feather-footed Jacoby Ellsbury stole five bases, a new club record! Amazing! Stay tuned!
Next one team i have dreaded to do analysis of The Red Sox Unfortunately the Red Sox will be lucky to have a winning season because they question marks are endless and the division is only getting better. Shall we begin the Red Sox need 35 wins between Jon Lester and Clay Buchholtz and need 50 with those two and one of the other 5 potential starters, my guess Ryan Dempster. John Lackey supposedly will be ready for the season and getting John Ferrell will aid in his comeback. Ferrell will be key for this staff's success but should not be blamed for its potential failure. If Lackey is not ready or slips up do not be surprised if Franklin Morales steps in. The debate of Alfredo Aceves being a starter isn't a debate. He has proved his value as a reliever and Ferrell knows it. Joel Hanrahan and Andrew Bailey should take care of 8th and 9th innings. So if starting pitching can go 7 consistently we could see a decent pitching staff. The next problem is producing at the plate. Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury a ...
OSTON -- At a time of year where managers like to plot out potential starting lineups on a paper napkin, John Farrell has one key spot that remains uncertain. While the Red Sox certainly hope to have Mike Napoli in the middle of their batting order and playing first base by the time camp opens, there are no guarantees until a contract is actually signed. However, Farrell isn't fretting over the situation. Instead, he continues to work on matters that are under his control. "It's understood," said Farrell, who was a guest at Theo Epstein's Hot Stove/Cool Music baseball roundtable Friday. "This isn't like it's a major surprise at this point. I have the utmost confidence that this question will be answered in due time. We're working through it." Whether or not Napoli eventually comes on board, Farrell looks at the newcomers (Shane Victorino, Jonny Gomes, Stephen Drew, Ryan Dempster, etc.) that will join the existing core (Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, Will Middlebrooks, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jon Lester) and is exc ...

Looking at potential 2014 free agents. I see Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester of the Red Sox. Any chance either of them are available?

People judge me when they notice my Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester posters mixed in on the wall with my One Direction and Biebs posters
The Boston Red Sox have been placing a couple of players on trade waivers every day and they placed Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester on them on Friday, according to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe ...
The Red Sox, who secured a blockbuster trade with the Dodgers, reportedly also have put Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester on trade waivers.
The Red Sox have placed pitcher Jon Lester and outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury on trade waivers.
Even more Red Sox have joined waivers, signaling potential trades, and this time it's Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury.
Looks like the Red Sox front office is blowing up the team. Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto. And Jon Lester, Jacoby Ellsbury. Hmmm.
Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury are the latest Red Sox to be placed on trade waivers.
Guess the Red Sox are blowing up the team. The Dodgers just claimed Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Beckett off waivers. (Boston should just hand them both to the Dodgers.) Carl Crawford, Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester are on there too.wouldn't shock me if they got claimed too.
"Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury have been placed on revocable waivers, Nick Cafardo of the reports (on
Only four Boston Red Sox players on the current roster attended legendary Sox player and coach Johnny Pesky's funeral on Monday. Those four were David Ortiz, Clay Buchholz, Vicente Padilla, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Even more appalling is that the Sox front office chartered buses for players (as well as front office staff) to attend the funeral, and the team had a day off on Monday...and yet, only those four players made the trip. However, former players such as Nomar Garciaparra (who was apparently extremely emotional during the ceremony) made the trip for the legend's farewell. I can understand that a lot of the members of the Red Sox are new to the club, but when only Ortiz and Buchholz show up among your big names...that's a problem. No Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez, Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, Jon's an embarrassment to the franchise. In contrast, nearly the entire team was at Beckett's Beckett Bowl event that night. If you want proof that...
Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners just pitched a perfect game. Rumor has it the Red Sox inquired about trading for "King" Felix this season and the Mariners wanted Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester in return. The Red Sox are going to lose Ellsbury. With the other massive contracts they have on the books they can't afford him. So, they would've traded a struggling left-hander to his home region along with a super-expensive outfielder, who is an admitted great talent but who they can't sign, for one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. Whoever in the Red Sox organization blocked this trade should be fired and forced to pay restitution for such a stupid lack of foresight. Pitching and defense wins World Series.
This guy is almost as much 'fun' listening to as Dennis "Tunnel Vision" Callahan throw the towel in ;) "Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, David Ortiz and Jacoby Ellsbury are the four that must go." Up until the last two games, Sox were 4-7 after Ortiz went on the DL.
get: Justin Upton get: Jacoby Ellsbury & Jon Lester. Do it.
Recent discussion in the media and among fans has centered around a trade suggestion involving Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester.
how would you like to have Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester on the Mariners?
Would you trade Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury for Felix Hernandez if you were the
Okay, so I'm glad the didn't trade Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury to the for Johan Santana.
Hard to see Phillip Humber pitch a perfect game. He was one of the players we got for Santana. Where would we be if we had made the trade with the Red Sox and got Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester.
Don't miss the final episode of '30 Clubs in 30 Days.' Former Red Sox 1B Sean Casey talks with Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester, and tours Fenway South with David Ortiz.
Jacoby Ellsbury is rad. Jon Lester is going to win the Cy Young. We're all gonna pretend this is Carl Crawford's first year with the team...
