Love this! The Red Sox's Future Payroll Obligations By Mike Axisa [August 28 at 8:41pm CST] A few days ago the Red Sox freed up more than a quarter-billion dollars in the future payroll obligation with their blockbuster nine-player trade with the Dodgers. Nine-figure commitments to Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford are suddenly off the books, as is a short-term but still substantial commitment to Josh Beckett. GM Ben Cherington essentially hit the reset button on the club's payroll situation. A few hours after the trade we broke down the Dodgers' future payroll obligations, which are up to $88.5MM in 2017. Now let's turn the tables and look at what the Red Sox still have on the books going forward, which is a pittance compared to their trade counterpart. With a big assist from Cot's Baseball Contracts, here is an unofficial recap of Boston's guaranteed commitments (salaries and buyouts only, not arbitration or pre-arbitration players)... •2013 ($42.938MM) -- John Lackey ($15.25MM), Jon Lester ($11.625MM ...
Didn't think Adrian Gonzalez was THAT big of a headache, however. John Lackey and maybe Jon Lester are the next in line.
Ciriaco doubles in 2, Red Sox beat Royals 4-3 BOSTON (AP) — Pedro Ciriaco put Boston ahead with a two-run double in the seventh inning, Jon Lester had his third straight solid start and the Red Sox snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night. The victory capped a day in which the Red Sox and the Dodgers discussed a major trade that would send Adrian Gonzalez, Boston’s best hitter, to Los Angeles. Minutes before the game, Gonzalez was scratched from the lineup. In Los Angeles, first baseman James Loney was pulled from the lineup against the Miami Marlins. Gonzalez was leading the Red Sox with 86 RBIs, 145 hits and 37 doubles and was first in the majors with a .398 batting average with runners in scoring position. They would be involved in a trade that was being discussed that would send right-hander Josh Beckett, left fielder Carl Crawford and infielder Nick Punto to Los Angeles, a baseball official informed of the discussions said, speaking on conditio ...
Looks like the Red Sox front office is blowing up the team. Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto. And Jon Lester, Jacoby Ellsbury. Hmmm.
Guess the Red Sox are blowing up the team. The Dodgers just claimed Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Beckett off waivers. (Boston should just hand them both to the Dodgers.) Carl Crawford, Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester are on there too.wouldn't shock me if they got claimed too.
Only four Boston Red Sox players on the current roster attended legendary Sox player and coach Johnny Pesky's funeral on Monday. Those four were David Ortiz, Clay Buchholz, Vicente Padilla, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Even more appalling is that the Sox front office chartered buses for players (as well as front office staff) to attend the funeral, and the team had a day off on Monday...and yet, only those four players made the trip. However, former players such as Nomar Garciaparra (who was apparently extremely emotional during the ceremony) made the trip for the legend's farewell. I can understand that a lot of the members of the Red Sox are new to the club, but when only Ortiz and Buchholz show up among your big names...that's a problem. No Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez, Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester...it's an embarrassment to the franchise. In contrast, nearly the entire team was at Beckett's Beckett Bowl event that night. If you want proof that...
Real Housewives of Boston: Why the Red Sox are the cattiest team in baseball I have been greatly enjoying the season-long meltdown of the Boston Red Sox. As if last year's fried chicken and beer brigade (and September collapse!) weren't fun enough, this season has had all sorts of schadenfreude for those of us in Yankeeland. Now things have gotten even more ridiculous for the Real Housewives of Boston -- because, frankly, that's what these ballplayers most resemble. The Sox fight like a bunch of mean girls, complete with snide little asides. Good grief. The latest story is from Yahoo! Sports: Jeff Passan reports that Adrian Gonzalez sent a text message to the team's owners, whining about Valentine leaving Jon Lester in to get shelled in a July game. So, instead of Red Sox's ownership telling him where to go with his complaints, ownership agreed to the meeting, which apparently had as many as 17 players. Oh, the meeting was at the Palace Hotel in New York, just before the Yankees series. Way to prioritize ...
Boston Red Sox players blasted manager Bobby Valentine to owners John Henry and Larry Lucchino during a heated meeting called after a text message was sent by a group of frustrated players to the team and ownership in late July, three sources familiar with the meeting told Yahoo! Sports. The owners called the meeting for Boston's off-day in New York on July 26 after first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, texting on behalf of himself and some teammates, aired their dissatisfaction with Valentine for embarrassing starting pitcher Jon Lester by leaving him in to allow 11 runs during a July 22 start. It was the latest incident in a season's worth of bad relations bubbling between Red Sox players and Valentine. Gonzalez and Dustin Pedroia were among the most vocal in the meeting, in which some players stated flatly they no longer wanted to play for Valentine, the sources said. The tenor of the 2 p.m. meeting at The Palace Hotel in New York turned ugly almost immediately, according to the sources, whom Yahoo! Sports gr ...

Nick Cafardo writes: New York – It will be three years and no postseason if the current trend continues with the Boston Red Sox. Two of those seasons were during Terry Francona’s tenure as manager. This one belongs to Bobby Valentine. Can we finally say now that it’s not the manager? Can we finally say out loud and with some forcefulness that the problem is the roster? What is the common denominator over the last three seasons? The roster hasn’t changed all that much except for the fill-ins who come along when there are injuries. The Red Sox saddled themselves with poor free agent signings in John Lackey, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Mike Cameron, Carl Crawford, and Bobby Jenks and the good ones – Victor Martinez, Adrian Beltre, and Jason Bay -- left as free-agents. The players this team has to depend on most – the top of the rotation starters like Josh Beckett and Jon Lester – have let them down. The only constants among the regulars have been David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia and Adrian Gonzalez. Jarrod S ...
