Jon Hendricks

Jon Hendricks (born September 16, 1921) is an American jazz lyricist and singer. He is considered one of the originators of vocalese, which adds lyrics to existing instrumental songs and replaces many instruments with vocalists (such as the big-band arrangements of Duke Ellington and Count Basie).

"After his education in college, he was a member of a Rhythm & Blues band. In the late 1950s he worked with musicians like BB King, Lightnin' Hopkins, Little Richard and James Brown on tour. In San Francisco he played with King Pleasure and initiated in the early 1960s, a "Late Night Session" at Club Bop City. There he came into contact with musicians such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Red Garland and Dexter Gordon, who visited this club after their concerts. In addition, he and Pharoah Sanders, Dewey Redman and Donald Garrett formed a big band. In 1969 he moved to New York and went with Jon Hendricks on a concert tour. During the 1970s he participated in the "Loft Jazz" scene. Like many other jazz musicians, he moved in the 1980s to Paris, where he worked with Chet Baker, Pharoah Sanders and Johnny Griffin. With Mal Waldron and Marty Cook, he came to Munich and continued to work with musicians such as Götz Tangerding or Joe Malinga." name the musician, one of my favorites~

Saturday, September 21, 2013 – 8pm – FREE (with free pass) CYRUS CHESTNUT Artists Collective - 1200 Albany Avenue - Hartford Cyrus Chestnut’s hard swinging, soulful sounds have become a staple in the jazz community. Blending contemporary jazz, traditional jazz and gospel, plus the occasional seasonings of Latin and samba, Chestnut gives himself plenty of freedom to explore different emotions, while keeping his music in recognizable form. His “lush chords, playful grace notes, worshipful tremolos and effortless runs up and down the 88s” are sure to impress, but its his warm demeanor and irresistible sweetness that make him “one of jazz’s most beloved ambassadors.” Mr. Chestnut has played with many leaders in the music scene, including Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Branford Marsalis, Chick Corea, Dizzy Gillespie, Jon Hendricks, and Betty Carter, recording and preforming live around the world. Going to Yoshi’s the other night to hear the Benny Green Trio made me reflect on all of the wonderful jazz musicians I’ve had the privilege to hear and see in person over the years. Many of them have left us, but some are very much present. Here’s a stream-of-consciousness list of the musicians I’ve heard in person; every one of them touched me and enriched me: Art Blakey, Betty Carter, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Horace Silver, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson, Sonny Rollins, Sheila Jordan, Harold Land, Bobby Hutcherson, Shirly Horn, Nat Adderly, Lew Tabackin, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Anthony Braxton, Ed Kelley, Geri Allen, Cyrus Chestnut, James Moody, John Scofield, Jon Hendricks, Wynton Marsalis, John McLaughlin, Terence Blanchard, Brian Blade, John Patitucci, Chico Freeman, Mal Waldron, Sam Rivers, Lester Bowie, Kirk Lightsie, Cecil McBee, Ron Carter, Ellis Marsalis, Kenny Burrell, Joe Henderson, Christian McBride, Ray Charles, Sun Ra, Larry ...

Writing lyrics to notes was first - and most simply - demonstrated by the setting of text to music that was originally only instrumental. In Jazz, there's a practice in this vein of setting text to well known instrumental Jazz improvisations. It doesn't even have to be well known - just appreciated. Eddie Jefferson set lyrics to a then - and quite likely still - little known recording of "I'm In The Mood For Love" by James Moody (on alto). When King Pleasure sang these lyrics as "Moody's Mood For Love", Pleasure (real name: Clarence Beeks) had a certified hit. It lauched a craze that would known as vocalese. Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross were big stars doing vocalese. Annie Ross had set words to tenor saxophonist Wardell Grey's "Twisted" and Jon Hendricks penned words to the imporvisations AND melodies on important Count Basie Orchestra records. Dave Lambert had created a marvel on "When The Red, Red, Robin Come Bob, Bob, Bobbin Along". Actually it wasn't at all new in the 1950s. I doubt that Bee Palmer is ...
Last night was amazing. Thank you to the New York Voices, Manhattan Transfer and the 91 year old legend Jon Hendricks for making great music. Together on the Smith Center stage! Wow!

Kudos to JAZZ INSIDE for this trememdous review of Marcus Goldhaber's "Almost Love."... By Alex Henderson Looking at the credits of Marcus Goldhaber’s Almost Love, one could easily assume that this is strictly a straight-ahead jazz vocal outing along the lines of Mark Murphy, Kurt Elling or Jon Hendricks. The musicians who back Goldhaber include, among others, tenor and soprano saxophonist Joel Frahm, cellist Erik Friedlander, trumpeter Joe Magnarelli and guitarist John Hart. Plus, Lauren Kinhan of the jazz vocal group New York Voices is present on one of the tracks (“If I Knew Better”). But in fact, about half of Almost Love is adult alternative or adult contemporary rather than vocal jazz. Goldhaber wrote or co-wrote all of the album’s 13 selections, and about half of them are closer to Van Morrison, James Taylor or John Mayer than they are to Murphy or Elling — which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. None other than Duke Ellington himself said that when you get down to it, there are only two t ...

My favorite interview I've posted in a while—Jon Hendricks and Wynton Marsalis on Charlie Rose in 1996:
ATTENTION - KENNY HAMILTON - KNOW YOU'LL LIKE THIS ONE. * * * * * In the late ‘50s and throughout the ‘60s, after receiving his music education at the Mastbaum School in Philadelphia and at the Juilliard School in New York City, HENRY GRIMES (upright bass, violin, poetry) played acoustic bass with many master jazz musicians of that era, including Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Haynes, Steve Lacy, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Sunny Murray, Sonny Rollins, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, and McCoy Tyner. Sadly, a trip to the West Coast to work with Al Jarreau and Jon Hendricks went awry, leaving Henry in downtown Los Angeles at the end of the '6Os with a broken bass he couldn't pay to repair, so he sold it for a small sum and faded away from the music world. Without a bass, a vehicle, or a telephone, he was truly lost. He survived by doing manual labor and redirecting his creative powers into writing poetry. Henry was discovered there by a Georgia social ...
