Col. (Ret) Ramon Padilla, a Korean War veteran, visited Korea with his friend Col. (Ret) Benjamin Buckley, who had served at I Corps ROK/US Group in Uijongbu, Jun 4-10. Among many of the place they visited was Hill 296, the site of one of the bloodiest battles in the Korean War in which Col. Padilla played an instrumental role in defending it against the Communist forces. They also attended the Eighth Army Birthday Ball and visited the Seoul National Cemetery, War Memorial Center, Joint Security Area, and Camp Red Cloud. Col. Padilla was born on September 1, 1931 in Los Angeles, California. He enlisted in the US Army in 1949 and joined Company L, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division as a rifleman in the Pusan Perimeter in August 1950. In the Battle of Hill 296, Col. Padilla and the Soldiers of Company L were driven off several times off the hill, but eventually recaptured and held the hill.

Wang Ji-hyun was born in Seoul, South Korea. Her childhood dream was to become a flight attendant, but at the age of 16, she was discovered on the street by a fashion editor.[1] Using the stage name Jun Ji-hyun, she began her career as a model for Ecole Magazine in 1997. Jun first became well known as a commercial model and as a TV actress. Although she made her film debut in the little-watched White Valentine in 1999, it was not until later in the year when she was featured in a commercial for Samsung My Jet Printer that she became a popular sensation. The dancing and attitude expressed in the ad made her into an icon for Koreans in their late teens and early twenties.[2] After continuing her TV and modelling career, Jun made her first well-publicized film appearance in late 2000 with Il Mare. A handsomely shot melodrama set on Ganghwa Island, the film did respectably well at the box office (despite opening on the same day as blockbuster Joint Security Area) and solidified her status as a star.[2] Jun's ...

Korea Part I As I try to relax on my last day in Korea, I asked myself if I took advantage of the time I had in another country or did I just just sit around and feel sorry for myself for being away from my family for a year. As I though back, I have seen and done a lot of things during my time in Korea: 1. Rode the Korea bullet train (KTX) 2. Visited Hill 303 (Korean War significance) 3. North Seoul Tower - Where I locked in my love for Angelica and Avery with the locks of love. 4. Went to the Cherry Blossom Festival. 5. Went to the Seoul Lantern Festival. 6. Visited the Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul. 7. Visited the Suwon Fortress. 8. Went to Olympic Park and the Olympic Museum in Seoul. 9. Climbed to the peak of Mount Dobong. 10. Went to the Demilitarized Zone or (DMZ) and actually stood in North Korea for a minute. 11. Visited the Tunnel that was found where North Korea was trying to dig their way into Seoul. 12. Visited the Joint Security Area and Dora Observatory where you can see the propaganda ...
Ruth Changsan and I have just returned from Panmunjeom, for those of you that know your geography, it is the northern most point of South Korea. Known as the Joint Security Area (JSA) it is were all the negotiations between North and South Korea take place, constructed and agreed upon by both sides at the end of the Korean War, also where the cease fire was negotiated and signed. We traveled through the South Korean Militarized zone, including three check points (passport in hand) and then through the two kilometers of barb wire wrapped DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) to Panmunjeom, heart pounding the entire time surrounded by South Korean and UN troops, tanks, artillery, and over two million land mines. The tension was so thick it was unbearable, all the Military wear sunglasses as not to accidentally give a "Threatening Look" to the other side and re kindle hostility. After STRICT instructions repeatedly given not to point, wave, call out, or in ANY way engage ANY North Korean Personnel, we were escorted to .. ...
If you're going to do a South Korean Marathon I think you should see "Joint Security Area". A great movie by Park Chan Wook.
On Sunday the Governor-General visited the Demilitarised Zone in Panmunjom as the guest of the Deputy Senior Member of the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission and Deputy Chief of Staff of United Nations Command and United States Forces Korea, Major General Brian Bishop. At Freedom House, Ms Bryce and Mr Michael Bryce were briefed on the history and operations undertaken by the United Nations forces in the Joint Security Area before visiting Conference Room T2, which is situated along the Military Demarcation Line. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice Agreement and the end of the Korean War, which involved 17,500 Australian Defence personnel who served under the United Nations Command.
Yonhap News recently reported the news that the North Korean authorities have increased surveillance along the Joint Security Area. This follows the crackdowns on the Sino-North Korean border.
Well it was 28 years ago today and also the day after Thanksgiving when I was stationed in the Joint Security Area (JSA) when a Russian defector ran across the line separating North and South Korea to defect. He was chased by 30 North Korean guards. 4th platoon Barbarians were the "north platoon". They had just rotated out of quick reaction force (QRF) duty and 1st platoon was now QRF. 4th platoon had sent out on patrol the night before (thanksgiving) because of intel that we had an infiltrator near the Bridge of No Return. I'm eating chow when I hear SSG Rick Lamb yell "1st platoon load trucks!" QRF is 90 seconds deployable from camp. I head to the armory to get my rifle, because I know what's coming. Then the siren sounds! We head to the bunkers and I start checking commo on my sector bunkers 15,16, and 17. Melvin Canty is in one of them...I don't remember which one and he's got an M60 machine gun. We break the seal on a crate of live ammo and load it into the M60. I see movement 300 yards to my front, ...
set foot on what was technically North Korean soil today, as part of a visit to the DMZ and JSA (Joint Security Area), where North and South sometimes meet, and perpetually stare one another down with menacing eyes hidden behind aviator shades. Verdict on the soil: felt very communist.
