Congratulations to Mark Lowmiller 2013 SHS Hall of Distinction Inductee While at SHS, Mark Lowmiller '60 played football, ran track and represented the school at Buckeye Boys State. After graduating, Mark earned his bachelor's degree at Dartmouth and an M.D. at Johns Hopkins Medical School. Later he served in the Army. For the last 25 years before his death from a heart attack on March 11, 2005, Mark had lived in Seattle, Washington, working as an anesthesiologist. Away from his work, he enjoyed raising national championship black Labrador retrievers, was a falconer, and volunteered his anesthesiologist skills at Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo. Mark raised orchids in his own greenhouse and was a prolific reader. In the words of a classmate, Mark "maintained an abiding friendship with many of his Shelby classmates."
( From history of Medicine ): In 1869, (a German medical student ), Paul Langerhans, found that within the pancreatic tissue that produces digestive juices there were clusters of cells whose function was unknown. Some of these cells were eventually shown to be the insulin-producing beta cells. Later, in honor of the person who discovered them, the cell clusters were named the islets of Langerhans. Again, Heparin was accidentally discovered in 1916 by Jay McLean,( a second-year medical student ) working at the Department of Physiology of the Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, under the direction of the eminent scientist William Howell.
Julia Randall (1924–2005) American poet. She was one of a number of female poets writing in English whose work retained rhyme and meter long past the time when they were considered fashionable by the U.S. poetry scene of the twentieth century. Even her work in free verse uses techniques like alliteration, assonance, and internal rhyme. Julia Randall was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1924. She graduated from Bryn Mawr School in 1941, Bennington College with a degree in English, and from Johns Hopkins Writing Seminar with a master's degree. She attended both Johns Hopkins Medical School and Harvard University but found that medicine and teaching did not leave her enough time to write poetry. She wrote during the summers and taught in various schools: the Hopkins evening school, then known as McCoy College; a University of Maryland branch in Paris; Goucher College; the Peabody Conservatory; Towson University; and what is now known as Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. She retired from teaching in . ...

Heart Disease is All in the Family (September 11, 2007) Do you have a close family member with heart disease? Then you might be at a higher risk yourself. In Britain, researchers came to the conclusion after reviewing previous studies on heart disease and how it runs in families. One study revealed 48 percent of all heart disease events and 72 percent of all premature deaths from heart disease occurred in 14 percent of families with a history of heart disease. According to study authors, these findings could help in developing better preventive services to people with a family history of the condition and could markedly improve treatment and survival for heart conditions. The authors recommend screening “first-degree” relatives of people with heart disease -- mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters -- but such screening rarely takes place in clinical practice. In one study conducted at Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, Md., among 859 siblings of 490 heart disease patients, siblings actually ha ...
