Music History 101 JANUARY 5, 1923 - Born on this day as Samuel Cornelius Phillips in Florence, Alabama: Sun Studios owner/producer Sam Phillips (d. July 30, 2003) Although he first made his mark with electric blues by black artists, he will be most remembered for his "discovery" of Elvis Presley and other rockabilly stars. Phillip's Memphis, Tennessee based Sun Records was first label of Presley, but Sun also launched many other careers including Howlin' Wolf, Carl Perkins, Ike Turner, Rufus Thomas, B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash. Phillips and Elvis Presley opened a new form of music. He said of Presley: "Elvis cut a ballad, which was just excellent. I could tell you, both Elvis and Roy Orbison could tear a ballad to pieces. But I said to myself, 'You can't do that, Sam.' If I had released a ballad I don't think you would have heard of Elvis Presley." Although much has been written about Phillips' goals, he can be seen stating the following: "Everyone knew that I was just a strug ...

Here are some rare home movies from the earliest days of rock and roll. Although accounts differ, this is apparently the oldest footage of four legendary performers: Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins.
Today, July 9th in 1954, Elvis Presley recorded ‘Blue Moon of Kentucky', (the B-side for his first single) at Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Presley had recorded the A-side ‘That’s Alright’ four days earlier. 1955, Bill Haley & His Comets went to No.1 on the US singles chart with '(We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock', staying at No.1 for eight weeks and becoming one of the biggest selling singles of all time. 1956, After the June 30th trouble at Asbury Park, Bill Haley and His Comets were denied permission to play at the Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. A city ordnance was passed that read: "Rock and roll music encouraged juvenile delinquency and inspired young females in lewd bathing suits to perform obscene dances on the city's beaches." 1958, Johnny Cash signed with Columbia Records, where he would remain for the next 30 years releasing over 60 albums. 1962, Bob Dylan recorded 'Blowin' In the Wind' at Columbia Recording Studios in New York City during an afternoon session. Dylan originally ...

How Recording Studios Work Legendary recording artist Elvis Presley recorded in Memphis' Sun Studios. Phantom City Studio Orlando Florida recording studios. In 1953, a skinny 18-year-old with slicked-back hair walked into Memphis Recording Service. He wanted to make a personal recording and was looking for owner Sam Phillips. Since Phillips wasn't in, the teen talked to secretary Marion Kiesker. When she asked what style of music he played, he responded, "I don't sound like nobody." Although few people ever heard that first $4 recording, Elvis Presley turned his personal style into worldwide fame with the help of Sam Phillips and that recording studio, which became the legendary Sun Studio. The studio was also home to Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and B.B. King [source: Rockabilly Hall of Fame]. Sun Studio may be what comes to mind when you think of recording studios, or the Beatles' Abbey Road in London -- or maybe even Chess Records in Chicago where artists such as Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, ...
In his autobiography, Johnny Cash recalled meeting Elvis Presley in Memphis, circa 1954: The first time I saw Elvis, singing from a flatbed truck at a Katz drugstore opening on Lamar Avenue, two or three hundred people, mostly teenage girls, had come out to see him.

if people like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, Kurt Cobain and so on were still alive, music today would be so good
For fun. Ray Charles, liver life-expectancy shorter than expected. John Lennon, allergy to lead. Janis Joplin death by Southern Comfort. Kurt Cobain died of ennui, basically. Michael Jackson, terrible case of identity crisis. Beethoven, heptitis. Amy Winehouse, failure to follow 12 easy steps. Elvis Presley, peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Bob Marley, religion and an inability to handle digital remastering. Jim Morrisson, snort, swallow, inject repeat. Johnny Cash, death by pie. Freddy Mercury, failure to “cover his meat when he went into heat.” Duane Allman answering the long standing question: motorcycle or bus.Whitney Houston, drown in a sea of receipts. Pick one? Anyone. More talent in one paragraph than can be found on all music billboards today. “Life is for the living. Death is for the dead. Let life be like music. And death a note unsaid.” ― Langston Hughes “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” ― Plato

March 20th, 1915: Gospel great, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, was born. Sister Rosetta Tharpe (March 20, 1915 – October 9, 1973) was an American singer, songwriter, guitarist and recording artist. A pioneer of twentieth-century music, Tharpe attained great popularity in the 1930s and 1940s with her gospel recordings that were a unique mixture of spiritual lyrics and rhythmic/early rock accompaniment. She became Gospel Music's first crossover artist and its first great recording star, referred to later as "the original soul sister". She was an early influence on iconic figures such as Little Richard, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis.
I would look up to Buddy Holly, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Dion, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, and of course the early Beatles.

SONG AND HISTORY FOR THE DAY: WALKING UP THE KING'S HIGHWAY COMPOSER: THOMAS A. DORSEY As formulated by Dorsey, Gospel Music combines Christian praise with the rhythms of jazz and the blues. His conception also deviates from what had been, to that time, standard hymnal practice by referring explicitly to the self, and the self's relation to faith and God, rather than the individual subsumed into the group via belief. Dorsey, who was born in Villa Rica, Georgia, was the music director at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chicago from 1932 until the late 1970s. His best known composition, "Take My Hand, Precious Lord", was performed by Mahalia Jackson and was a favorite of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.. Another composition, "Peace in the Valley", was a hit for Red Foley in 1951 and has been performed by dozens of other artists, including Queen of Gospel Albertina Walker, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. Dorsey died in Chicago, aged 93. In 2002, the Library of Congress honored his album Precious Lord: New Recordin . ...

Artist Biography by Richie Unterberger Although he shared the same rockabilly roots as Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison went on to pioneer an entirely different brand of country/pop-based rock & roll in the early '60s. What he lacked in charisma and photogenic looks, Orbison made up for in spades with his quavering operatic voice and melodramatic narratives of unrequited love and yearning. In the process, he established rock & roll archetypes of the underdog and the hopelessly romantic loser. These were not only amplified by peers such as Del Shannon and Gene Pitney, but also influenced future generations of roots rockers such as Bruce Springsteen and Chris Isaak, as well as modern country stars the Mavericks. Orbison made his first widely distributed recordings for Sun Records in 1956. Roy was a capable rockabilly singer, and had a small national hit with his first Sun single, "Ooby Dooby." But even then, he was far more comfortable as a ballad singer than as a hepped-up rockabil ...

A vintage photo of The Beatles graces the cover of the latest issue of Rolling Stone. So we're wondering -- which decade do you think had the best music? - Is it the 1960s, with artists like The Beatles, Johnny Cash, The Bee Gees, Elvis Presley? - Is it the 1950s, with crooners like Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin? - Is it the 1980s, with pop stars like Madonna, Prince, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson? - Or is it another decade all together? Comment and let us know!

On this day in 1956—a Memphis session enshrined in rock-and-roll legend as the one-and-only gathering of the "Million Dollar Quartet." The studio at 760 Union was run by Sam Phillips. Among those stars was Carl Perkins, the rockabilly legend who was in the studio on December 4, 1956, to record a follow-up to his smash hit from earlier that year: "Blue Suede Shoes." Hanging out in the booth was Perkins' good friend Johnny Cash, already a star in his own right after his breakthrough hits, "Folsom Prison Blues" (1955) and "I Walk The Line" (1956). And playing piano for a $15 session fee was the brash, wild, but not-yet-famous Jerry Lee Lewis, whose career-making Sun single "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" was set for release just a few weeks later. Four songs into Perkins' session, all work came to an end with the arrival of an unexpected drop-in guest: Elvis Presley himself. While recording engineer Jack Clement ran a tape that would not be discovered for more than 20 years, Sam Phillips—ever the promote ...
Finally back home but we really enjoyed the trip! First stop was Duck Commander in West Monroe LA. That was pretty cool. 2nd stop was our daughter Amanda's in Horn Lake MS. Amanda and Kaylin joined us for the trip to Devil's Crossroads in Clarksdale MS where the legendary Robert Johnson allegedly sold his soul to the devil to become a blues master then to Tunica MS, the gateway to the blues, down the blues highway 61. The next night we toured downtown Memphis TN and saw the famous Beale Street and Sun Studio where so many greats, including Elvis Presley & Johnny Cash recorded their first songs. Then we were off to Misty's house in Nashville TN for thanksgiving dinner and later that night we went to the coolest Christmas light show I've ever seen at Jellystone Park with Misty, Dion, L'il Dion and Dyson. Day 12. I'm thankful for my grandpa. He is truly one of the best men God put on this earth. He would do anything for anyone, he helped raise me, and I'm so thankful for that. I'm thankful he taught me how to love generously, respect, self worth, how to fry fish and make homemade pancakes, and that because of him, I've always known who Johnny Cash, George Jones, Vern Gosdin, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley, and Dolly Parton are. I'm thankful he tucked me into bed for 17 years of my life. He taught me to pray no matter where I was or what I was doing. He's a very strong man. He had a stroke and wasn't supposed to be able to walk again, he has a walker, but he's doing awesome. There's something different about my Poppy, and I thank God for him. Happy 78th Birthday Poppy. I hope it's wonderful!
Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Jack Johnson, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins .I cant decide who to do my project on

Rockabilly hasn't experienced a comeback in the United States, but Europe "loves it," Harlan said. Harlan is on his second career in the genre that began in the 1950s. According to the Memphis Rock ‘n' Roll Museum website, rockabilly peaked in 1956. By the end of the decade, Elvis Presley, who was one of the leaders of the movement, entered the Army and the music began to wane. Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins, who also were rockabilly artists, returned to their country roots at the end of the '50s. Harlan, who lives in Muhlenberg County, started his career in 1958 with "I Wanna Bop." The song is on his "Let's Keep the 50's Spirit Alive" CD. Other cuts on the release include "School House Rock," "I Ain't Elvis" and "This Lonely Man." Several of Harlan's songs were recorded by Chet Atkins and the Everly Brothers ...

KWKH Shreveport, Louisiana debuted their “Saturday Night Roundup” live Country Music show in 1936. This show would eventually become the “Louisiana Hayride” in 1948. *Early on in the history of the Louisiana Hayride, the careers of several stars were launched as a result of the foundation they built as members of the Hayride. Hank Williams, Webb Pierce, Faron Young, Slim Whitman, Johnny Horton, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Bob Luman, Floyd Crammer, James Burton, to name just a few.
In 1955, Elvis Presley played two shows in Beaumont, Texas, with bassist Bill Black and guitarist Scotty Moore.     In 1955, Johnny Cash's first single, "Cry Cry Cry," was released, where it peaked at on the charts. The early success of the song led to a featured spot on the Louisiana Hayride Tour and helped to kick off his career. The song sold over 100,000 copies alone in the southern states. Cash then began to tour with Elvis Presley (among other artists from the record business) soon after its release.   In 1955, at Webster Hall in New York City, Perry Como recorded "Tina Marie."   In 1955, at Columbia Studios in New York, the Four Lads recorded "Moments To Remember."   In 1958, Bobby Darin's "Splish Splash" enters the US record charts, where it would reach Bobby would later say that the song only took him about ten minutes to write. ya think?   In 1961, Bobby Vee recorded "Take Good Care Of My Baby." Why the Song is Called “Not Union Avenue”—A Tribute to Sun Records I’ve had enough questions about why “Not Union Avenue” is called “Not Union Avenue” that I’m going to try to make amends and explain it, because I’m the one to blame for any and all confusion on that count. Now that I’ve just today released the actual full version of the song—not the chopped-up version that I released earlier—I can at least try to explain how it came about. There’s an unassuming little building at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee. It’s the Sun Records studio. It unleashed Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and Jerry Lee Lewis on the world, along with a host of rock, rockabilly and blues artists. It changed the world forever. It rocked the foundation of the culture—in all senses. It shifted consciousness. It set in motion cultural and creative shockwaves that are still echoing all over the world right now, today, half a century later. Yes: a handful of hillbillies from the Deep So ...

Song of the day: Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins & Jerry Lee Lewis. Memphis, 1956.
How Hollywood De-Christianized Johnny Cash Celebrating the musical legend on the week of his birth By Lee Habeeb It’s an early scene in the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic, Walk The Line. The young Cash, played by Joaquin Phoenix, is auditioning for the man who might make him the next Elvis Presley. That man was Sam Phillips, the Sun Records impresario from Memphis. The fictional Cash walks into the room and begins playing a Gospel song. The fictional Phillips is not impressed, and tells the fictional Cash that no one listens to Gospel anymore, and that he should play something more meaningful. More relevant. Cash did. The rest was history. Well, not quite. It turns out that Cash, who was born on February 26, 1932, didn’t stop playing Gospel Music at all. Nearly a quarter of the songs he wrote were in some way about his faith or the Bible, and many others were influenced by his Christian worldview. But there wasn’t a single Gospel song on the Walk The Line soundtrack. Somehow, the screenwriters left out tha ...

So let me get this straight, musicians can use dope and performance enhancing drugs and if they have more hits and stuff they get inducted into the Hall of Fame. But a ball player does the same thing, has more hits than his competition and is a huge star, sells out stadiums, not once every year but practically every night! and when the time comes, he is not eligible to be in the Hall of Fame. Why? Because "maybe" he used drugs...well Eric Clapton, Paul Mccartney, George Harrison, John Lennon, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and the rest...shame shame on you for being celebrated in spite of your lack of good judgement.

December 4, 1956 Johnny Cash went to Sun Records in Memphis to hear Carl Perkins record. The owner Sam Phillips had brought in Jerry Lee Lewis (then unknown) to accompany on the piano. Later, Elvis Presley dropped by for a visit. None of this was planned, but naturally a jam session ensued. Wouldn’t you love to have been there to watch and listen?

So on the way into school I was listening to Johnny Cash and i got to thinking about the evolution of popular music. Back then it was Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry.now its Justin Bieber, Niki Minaj and ridiculously named rappers with no talent.uh...what the *** happened?
I've added a new obsession to my list along with Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash: Jerry Lee Lewis.
Out for my morning walk, ran into Johnny Cash's cousin, he was dropping off a friend to work for Jason... So he tells me a story... Apparently, Elvis Presley was bi sexual... with his old childhood friend, they went into the army the same time, they were both dating two sisters, but his friend married his sister before they deployed for Germany, two years later, she's back in the states getting a divorce, he sees her and she tells him. She caught her husband and Elvis in bed together... Of course she never said anything cause Elvis had a huge posse back then and she was afraid for her safety...
We need another early Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis to emerge. There needs to be music like that from the new generations. And it needs to be popular. Im just sayin.
Tonight's Lullaby:"(There Will Be) Peace In The Valley" by Johnny Cash(or Elvis Presley or Pat Boone or,or,).My favorite version is Cash's from Live At San Quentin, where he was accompanied by the Carter Family,Carl Perkins and The Tennessee Three.Probably one of the most comforting Gospel songs (to me at least).Optimistic ? Yes ,but isn't that what Faith is all about?
Shuffle must know something, Carl Perkins followed up by Elvis Presley. Can Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, or Johnny Cash be next?
