Yesterday actually, but most people probably don't know that the drummer on this piece was the great Alan White, who has been the drummer in Yes since 1972. Alan played with John and Yoko's Plastic Ono Band and also contributed to John Lennon immortal Imagine album. He was touring with Joe Cocker when he got the call to replace the exiting Bill Bruford in Yes. And that's all good karma!

Today's Song of the Day is from John Lennon, who turned 30 in 1970, with this tune from John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band
Bands that passed on playing at Woodstock Declined invitations and missed connections Bob Dylan, in whose "backyard" the festival was held, was never in serious negotiation. Instead, Dylan signed in mid-July to play the Isle of Wight Festival of Music, on August 31. Dylan set sail for England on Queen Elizabeth 2 on August 15, the day the Woodstock Festival started. His son was injured by a cabin door and the family disembarked. Dylan, with his wife Sara, flew to England the following week. Dylan had been unhappy about the number of hippies piling up outside his house in the nearby town of Woodstock. The Beatles/John Lennon: There are two scenarios as to why The Beatles did not perform. The first is that promoters contacted John Lennon to discuss a Beatles performance at Woodstock, and Lennon said that the Beatles would not play unless there was also a spot at the festival for Yoko Ono's Plastic Ono Band, whereupon he was turned down.[unreliable source?] The website claims the more likely expl ...

December 1969: Plastic Ono Band release their album, "Live Peace in Toronto" ... Recorded at the Toronto Rock and Roll Revival festival, it was the first live album released by any member of the Beatles separately or together. John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono received a phone call from the festival's promoters John Brower and Kenny Walker, and then quickly assembled a band in a very short space of time to play at the festival, which was due to start the following day. The group had brief rehearsals before appearing on the stage to perform several songs; one of which—"Cold Turkey"—was first performed live at said festival. Eventually returning home, Lennon mixed the album in a day.
Very Excited to soon listen to "Double Fantasy," the last album recorded by John Lennon in 1980, before he was murdered in his New York neighborhood. I am as excited or more to hear Yoko Ono on this album also! I will also be exploring other releases from her. I have been so refreshed and inspired by Yoko Ono as an artist and as a human being. She and John created this album, and she has just this year performed it at 2013 NY Meltdown arts festival with the Plastic Ono Band in a contemporary instrumentation/presentation. WAR IS OVER IS OVER john&yoko - "attica state" "luck of irish" and other songs powerful activist music/art/expression they were so excellent together her taste in art was like his, which was not satisfied by only the pop format and polished politeness and political correctness. he wanted reactions and imagination art that affects thinking and ideas and challenges to elevate consciousness and Yoko Ono nurtured and empowered that part of his nature because that is what she is also - and tog ...

Patrick Carney This week in Rock n' Roll History (1971) - The Number 1 album in the US this week is John Lennon's Imagine. It is the second album by Lennon. Recorded and released in 1971, it tended towards songs that were gentler, more commercial and less primal rock than those on his previous album, the critically acclaimed John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. The album is considered the most popular of his works. In 2012, Imagine was voted 80th on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" While in New York, both former-Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison had a short jam session. At this session, Lennon asked Harrison if he would like to perform on Lennon's next album, with recording that was to begin in a week's time at Lennon's Ascot Sound Studios at hisTittenhurst Park residence. Harrison said yes, and would ask friend Klaus Voormann, via a phone call, if he wanted to come to the recording sessions. — in London, England, United Kingdom.
it's a quote from the song 'remember' from John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band
Fair’s fair. After reviewing the collected works of Paul Mccartney, here’s a look at the solo works of Sir Paul’s former writing partner John Lennon. Once again, I’ve ranked the albums from best to worst, for your pleasure and profit. 1. Imagine, 1971 Wow. Take the raw, brutally honest angst of “Plastic Ono Band,” add some layers and orchestrations to soften the hard edge, and voilà, you’ve got yourself a masterpiece. This is Lennon at his post-Beatles peak, singing pretty love songs to Yoko, despairing of his own crazy brain, and taking beautiful digs at Richard Nixon and Paul Mccartney. This album is tuneful, gorgeous, and heartbreaking from start to finish. Essential. Best song: “Gimme Some Truth” 2. Plastic Ono Band, 1970 After the Beatles broke up, John went to primal scream therapy. Seriously. That’s a thing. Shortly afterwards, he decided to make a primal scream of an album. The production values were stark and minimalistic, which only amplified the pain in Lennon’s writing a ...

Once accused of breaking up 'The Beatles,' Yoko Ono has a new life as a granny and a pop star. In the warm and enticing article below, she talks to Nina Myskow of 'The Times' of London newspaper about old age — and John Lennon, among other topics. She is currently in Iceland to illuminate the 'Imagine Peace Tower' on the Icelandic island of Videy, paying tribute to her late husband, John Lennon. Ms. Ono seems to be wise and humanistic, even beyond her 80 years. Long and happily may she live! “I know you’re not supposed to show your legs at my age,” she says with a giggle. Then she shrugs and adds without a trace of self-pity: “I don’t know how long I’ve got, so I’m just going for it. I thought I better just do what I want to do.” Ono is certainly going for it, having recently topped the Billboard Hot 100 Dance Club Play charts, curated a hugely successful Meltdown festival on London’s Southbank and published Acorn, a new book of “enchanting exercises to open the eyes”. As for her . ...

September 25, 1969…John Lennon began recording his composition "Cold Turkey," a song about heroin withdrawal and his battle with drug addiction. Work continued on the track on September 28 and it was completed on October 5. The backing band included Eric Clapton, Yoko Ono, Ringo Starr and Klaus Voorman. Lennon presented the song to Paul Mccartney as a potential single by the Beatles, but was refused and it was instead released as a Plastic Ono Band single.

If you've never perused their respective solo careers: Plastic Ono Band or Imagine (John Lennon) and Band On the Run (Paul Mccartney)
Trying out my new John Lennon and Plastic Ono Band vinyl. I'm seriously in heaven, guys. I think I might be dead.
I bought the other day, a John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band cd at McKay's Used Books and Media. It was his 1972 Sometime In New York City album. I am a John Lennon fan. But I admit, I found that record extremely dull and boring. I find alot of his music extremely dull and boring. ( after The Beatles, that is ) And same goes for Paul Mccartney as well. Some of the boringesr, silliest music I've ever listened to was the solo music of two of the greatest songwriters of all time. I tried Lennon's Mind Games from '73 and his next- Walls And Bridges. Awful. And Paul.. I don't know what you call that music of his.. but it's terrible. Now, this is just my critiqu and my opinion means nothing. I am a music historian from yesterday and today. Don't get me wrong becauuse I dig alot of the solo stuff. As for the Beatles gang- I prefer George's most of all. Anyway, I went to google the solo albums of the former Beatles and found that most often their solo albums stayed on low charts and suffered great critisisms. Now, I ...
On this date in 1957, John Lennon and Paul Mccartney of the Beatles are introduced to each other when Lennon's band the Quarrymen performs at the St. Peter's Church Hall fête in Woolton. John asks Paul, "Would you mind if we started the most famous band in the world and at its height of popularity I get involved with a scary opinionated concept artist and sabotage the entire undertaking?" Paul responds, "Fab!"

Sung by Ringo Starr, The Beatles covered ''Act Naturally'', written by Johnny Russell and Voni Morrison, originally recorded by Buck Owens and the Buckaroos in 1965, on the UK version of their album Help! which was released in the same year. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic called it "an ideal showcase for Ringo's amiable vocals, but his technical ability as a drummer has long been a matter of some sport. If George Harrison was the "mystical" Beatle, Ringo was the Zen Beatle, with a laid-back, light-hearted personality that led some people to conclude the drummer might be a little on the dim side. Unfairly so, too. Supposedly the (notoriously sarcastic) John Lennon once said, "Ringo isn't even the best drummer in the Beatles," but then Lennon also asked Ringo to play drums on the first thing he did outside the Fab Four, the Plastic Ono Band album. There are so many strengths of Starr, here are some highlights: 1- He has nearly perfect tempo. This allowed the Beatles to record a song 50 or 60 times, and ...

Somebody help settle a debate. Please. Who played the iconic, plaintive, pleading, heavily saturated riff on John Lennon & Plastic Ono Band's 1969 classic "Cold Turkey"? I am sure it was God. You know who I mean, Eric Clapton. My friend insists it was Lennon himself. So who's right, or are we both wrong? (I think my mate is confusing it with the earlier but similar, almost like a template for the CT riff, guitar part on "Yer Blues", absolute stand-out Lennon song on the album "The Beatles", more commonly called "The White Album".) Thank you, fellow music-lovers!

Worst singing EVER! What the *** was John Lennon and Eric Clapton thinking?
Out of all the Beatles, John Lennon had the most interesting -- and frustrating -- solo career. Lennon was capable of inspired, brutally honest confessional songwriting and melodic songcraft; he also had a tendency to rest on his laurels, churning out straight-ahead rock & roll without much care. But the extremes, both in his music and his life, were what made him fascinating. Where Paul Mccartney was content to be a rock star, Lennon dabbled in everything from revolutionary politics to the television talk-show circuit during the early '70s. After releasing a pair of acclaimed albums, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, in the early '70s, Lennon sunk into an infamous "lost weekend" where his musical output was decidedly uneven and his public behavior was often embarrassing. Halfway through the decade, he sobered up and retired from performing to become a house-husband and father. In 1980, he launched a comeback with his wife Yoko Ono, releasing the duet album Double Fantasy that fall. Just as his ca ...
