I know that many of my friends are readers, so I thought I'd share my reading list for my Twentieth/Twenty-First Century Literature class this fall at Clemson. See what all of you bibliophiles think? In recent semesters, my students were begging for more Twenty-First Century works, so that prompted the inclusion of "Salvage the Bones" and "Detroit." "Salvage the Bones" won last year's National Book Award for fiction, and "Detroit" is a play that deals with the Great Recession of the past four years. I also assign stories by Eudora Welty and Flannery O'Connor, and four poems by South Carolina poet James Dickey. My department describes the course as one that stretches from the end of World War II until now. Tennessee Williams, A Streetcar Named Desire Jhumpa Lahiri, Interpreter of Maladies Carson McCullers, The Ballad of the Sad Café Sam Shepard, Buried Child Allen Ginsberg, Howl and Other Poems Lisa D’Amour, Detroit Gary Snyder, Riprap and Cold Mountain Poems Jesmyn Ward, Salvage the Bones Jack Kerouac, ...
