This Day in History.. Jun 20, 1975: Jaws released Jaws put now-famed director Steven Spielberg on the Hollywood map. Spielberg, largely self-taught in filmmaking, made his feature-length directorial debut with The Sugarland Express in 1974. The film was critically well-received but a box-office flop. Following the success of Jaws, Spielberg went on to become one of the most influential, iconic people in the film world, with such epics as Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), ET: the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Jurassic Park (1993), Schindler's List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). E.T., Jaws and Jurassic Park rank among the 10 highest-grossing movies of all time. In 1994, Spielberg formed DreamWorks SKG, with Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen. The company has produced such hits as American Beauty (1999), Gladiator (2001) and Shrek (2001).
Tuesday, May 20, 2014 Never Again, Again Posted by Daniel Greenfield @ the Sultan Knish blog 22 Comments Steven Spielberg threw a Holocaust party and everyone, from Samuel L. Jackson to Kim Kardashian, was invited. The gala evening for his Shoah Foundation began with a few jokes. Conan O'Brien's, “I called all my Jewish writers into my office and asked them for some Shoah jokes” really killed. Bruce Springsteen played "Dancing in the Dark" whose lyrics "you can't start a fire without a spark" couldn't possibly have been more appropriate considering that the literal meaning of Holocaust is "Sacrifice by fire." Can screen size payments really save movies Paying for it by the inch. That's not a new premium subscription tier they're introducing in Grindr, but how the boss of Dreamworks thinks we'll soon pay for our media depending on how large a display we're watching it on. Instead of paying to watch a film when it comes out in the traditional launch week excitement window, Jeffrey Katzenberg thinks we'll pay to experience films at a higher resolution, blowing $15 to watch it on a cinema screen, $4 to watch it on the living room TV or $1.99 to watch it while trying to find a way to comfortably hold a telephone in front of your eyes for two hours. Katzenberg told people at the Milken Global Conference that he thinks media consumption options will become this complicated within a decade, with our phones, tablets and TVs somehow upgrading themselves with the ability to inform the legal media servers how big our screens are and therefore how much we should be charged for watching that year's Spider-Man reboot. Of cou ...
CINEMA In the era when Yiddish theatre was still a major force in the world of theatre, over 100 films were made in Yiddish. Many are now lost. Prominent films included Shulamith (1931), the first Yiddish musical on film His Wife's Lover (1931), A Daughter of Her People (1932), the anti-Nazi film The Wandering Jew (1933), The Yiddish King Lear (1934), Shir Hashirim (1935), the biggest Yiddish film hit of all time Yidl Mitn Fidl (1936), Where Is My Child? (1937), Green Fields (1937), Dybuk (1937), The Singing Blacksmith (1938), Tevye (1939), Mirele Efros (1939), Lang ist der Weg (1948), and God, Man and Devil (1950). The roster of Jewish entrepreneurs in the English-language American film industry is legendary: Samuel Goldwyn, Louis B. Mayer, the Warner Brothers, David O. Obamas set new record for vacation travel expenses; stonewalled documents finally released March 1, 2014 by Cheryl Carpenter Klimek It took filing a lawsuit, but Judicial Watch discovered Friday that President Obama has set a new record for travel on the taxpayer dime. The conservative watchdog group obtained travel records from the U.S. Department of the Air Force that show the Obamas racked up $7.4 million during just three trips in 2013 – in flight expenses only. The records, revealed Friday, include the Obama family’s Christmas vacation in Hawaii from Dec. 21, 2012, to Jan. 5, 2013. During that stay, the president took a short break and flew back to Washington to work on a budget deal, then returned for the rest of his vacation. The second trip was in early August, 2013, when Obama flew to California for a private fundraiser with DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, then appeared with Jay Leno on the “Tonight Show.” Later that month, the Obama family vacationed in Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. ‘Shrek’ Franchise May Continue With Fifth Movie After 2010′s Shrek Forever After, a film conveniently appended with an alternate title of The Final Chapter, it appeared that audiences had seen the last of the titular grumpy ogre and his countless fairy tale-fueled screen adventures; in the intervening four years, there’s been nary a hint that animation giant DreamWorks has any interest in pursuing additional entries in the Shrek franchise, despite the box office take for 2011 spin-off, Puss in Boots reaching $555 million worldwide. Still, for all intents and purposes, it looked like the studio had finished telling Shrek’s story. But it turns out that DreamWorks may have simply been taking a break from Shrek, because CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg seems quite certain that we haven’t heard the last from the series just yet. In point of fact, there may be a fifth film coming down the pipeline, though he chose to keep mum on whether it’s coming sooner rather than later. Turns out that the fourth movie ...
So without further ado, here's why I haven't seen The Prince of Egypt yet. Let's get down to the basic. The bare basics, that's right... we're starting at the studio. Dreamworks Animation. Happy birthday to "out" David Geffen. Born February 21, 1943. Known as an American business magnate, producer, film studio executive and philanthropist. Known for creating Asylum Records in 1970, Geffen Records in 1980 and DGC Records in 1990. And in 1994, along with Jeffrey Katzenberg and Steven Spielberg, he founded DreamWorks SKG. Before he came out of the closet he wanted to marry Cher...wait, wasn't that *** After having an odd encounter with Geffen on a beach on Oahu, I had mixed feelings about him. But that changed when I watched a PBS American Masters program on him. Wow, drive and an ear/eye for talent! Not every *** teen can grow up to be a multi-billionaire, but he does prove somewhat that "It gets better!"
Today is the 82nd Birthday of veteran composer John Towner Williams, who composed the scores to the works of Irwin Allen (Lost In Space, Land Of The Giants, The Time Tunnel) and the movies of Steven Spielberg, plus the Indiana Jones movies co-produced by George Lucas and the Star Wars movies, plus the Superman quadrilogy that starred the late Christopher Reeve, and Superman Returns that starred Brandon Routh. In honor of the great Mr. Williams, I will play his Superman march in his honor as well as his Duel Of The Fates theme from Star Wars Episodes 1 and 3. Williams also did the Olympic march theme as well as the themes for NBC's morning show Today and the Nightly News. He also composed the fanfare to Dreamworks SKG LLC, which was founded 20 years ago by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen.

Dream Works was formed in 1994 amid great media hype by recording industry mogul David Geffen, former Disney Pictures chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg, and film director Steven Spielberg, all three of whom are Jews. The company produces movies, animated films, television programs, and recorded music. Two other large production companies, MCA and Universal Pictures, are both owned by Seagram Company, Ltd. The president and CEO of Seagram, the liquor giant, is Edgar Bronfman Jr., who is also president of the World Jewish Congress. It is well known that Jews have controlled the production and distribution of films since the inception of the movie industry in the early decades of the 20th century.

Obama Tells His Hollywood Allies to Cut Movie Violence Obama told donor Katzenberg to “think long and hard” about profitable gun violence movies HOLLYWOOD SAYS KISS OFF! Kurt Nimmo November 16, 2013 Violent films dominate Hollywood's cinematic offerings. Violent films dominate Hollywood’s cinematic offerings. Obama visited Hollywood on Tuesday during a fundraising swing and urged executives and employees to “think long and hard” about gun violence messages in movies. “We gotta make sure that we’re not glorifying it,” he told an audience at DreamWorks. Hollywood leans heavily on violence in movies to entertain audiences. Earlier this month, it was reported that a study to be published in the December issue of Pediatrics found that PG-13 movies are now more violent than R-rated movies. “Violent encounters with guns occur, on average, more than twice an hour in the best sellers in both ratings categories, according to researchers, who worked with support from the Annenberg Publ ...

Aladdin granted Disney a wish for success this day in 1992. Budget: $28M | Gross: $508M (Worldwide) | 2 Oscars, 5 nom. Did you know? Robbin Williams offered to work at union scale rate (lowest legal pay rate) in exchange that his voice not appear in merchandise and the genie not take more than 25% of the poster. Disney did not hold up its end of the deal, thus Williams pulled his support for the film and Disney. CEO Michael Eisner tried to make peace by offering Williams a Pablo Picasso. Still feeling betrayed, Williams turned him down. It wasn't until Chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg was fired and a formal public apology was given by Disney to Williams that he came back and performed for Disney, 4 years later.

Watched a really fascinating documentary about David Geffen last night. Originally from Brooklyn until after high school, he began his entertainment career in the mail room of a talent agency in Los Angeles. Since Geffen lied about graduating from UCLA on his application (he did not go there or graduate from anywhere), he spent weeks showing up to work early so he could scour through all the mail in case there was a letter from UCLA. today felt like a 'nightmare before christmas' (1993) day. a bit of trivia on this movie: A crossed-out calculation on Jack's blackboard seems to equate 3 times the square of pi multiplied by 12 to Christmas Day (a Santa hat). The true numerical answer is approximately 355.31. If the decimal portion is dropped, this then equates to December 21st, the 355th day of the year--hence the crossed-out equation. December 21st however is the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere (winter solstice). It is also the birthday of Jeffrey Katzenberg, the film's executive producer and the one most responsible for turning Walt Disney Studios and its animation division around after joining in 1984.
McConnell to Newsmax: GOP-led Senate Would Take US 'in Different Direction' Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell tells Newsmax TV that Republicans will take the nation in "an entirely different direction" if they win back the Senate in next year's elections. "What we hope to have is a Senate Republican majority that can set a different agenda for our country," the Kentucky Republican tells Newsmax in an exclusive interview. "Rather than defending Obamacare, we would pull it out root and branch. We would go in an entirely different direction." The five-term senator is facing a re-election challenge from Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes. She has attracted such top fund-raisers as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg, who raised huge sums for President Barack Obama's re-election bid last year. McConnell's supporters include the political action committees of such business titans as Koch Industries, Home Depot, Amgen, and Ford Motor Co., according to news rep ...
’ll shoot you straight: the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and national Democrats will stop at nothing to beat me. Just this week, my opponent held an event in Beverly Hills, California with Hollywood executive Jeffrey Katzenberg that reportedly brought in over $1,000,000 that will be spent on the Kentucky airwaves. They’re pulling out all the stops… it seems like every B-list celebrity, Obama enthusiast, and musical artist in Hollywood is descending upon Kentucky... This race won’t be easy; fighting Harry Reid and President Obama’s agenda in the Senate has made this race the battleground of ideas during this election cycle, with every special interest group and SuperPAC dropping attack ads on me. There’s a critical fundraising deadline coming up tonight at midnight and I wanted to send you a personal email to ask if you could help us end the month strong: probably been getting a lot of emails from various campaigns and organizations, but I wouldn’t be asking you if it wasn’t imp ...

Because I Care: Top 5 real estate scams – and how to avoid them Fraud and investment scams abound at all levels of the real estate market – whether it be a contractor who charges hundreds of dollars for work not done to an “investment agent” who embezzles hundreds of millions – protecting yourself can require a measure of vigilance and legwork, but it can also come down to exercising skepticism and common sense. 1. Title fraud. Although relatively rare, one of the most devastating frauds for property owners is title fraud. This type of fraud starts with identity theft. The scammer will use false documents to pose as the property owner, registers forged documents transferring a property to his or her name, and then gets a new mortgage against the property. After securing a mortgage or line of credit, the criminal takes the cash and leaves the owner on the hook for future payments. While an identity thief may get a forced discharge of an existing mortgage, it is generally held that fraudsters are ...

A few items I had lying around, cleaned up, amidst a mass of fiction on my PC by SF author William Gibson. They are, as ever, of both causal and critical value.      Disneyland with the Death Penalty   WIRED sends William Gibson to the future: Singapore By William Gibson 1993   -   "It's like an entire country run by Jeffrey Katzenberg," the producer had said, "under the motto 'Be happy or I'll kill you.'" We were sitting in an office a block from Rodeo Drive, on large black furniture leased with Japanese venture capital. Now that I'm actually here, the Disneyland metaphor is proving impossible to shake. For that matter, Rodeo Drive comes frequently to mind, though the local equivalent feels more like 30 or 40 Beverly Centers put end to end. [That’s] a wonderful bit of poetic justice.”

One of my favorite movies of all time! The animation style is simple, beautiful and technically brilliant. This movie discovered some unknown talent like Glen Keane, Ron Clemens, John Musker, Howard Ashman, and Alan Menken, who are legends today. Had this movie not been produced in a parking lot on the brink of studio bankruptcy, it would have had a budget for more special effects like shadows and water ripples, which would have set a standard for animation years ahead of its time. The only effect they could splurge on were bubbles, all 8 million of them (yup, some guy sat there and animated over 8 million bubbles). This movie not only won Academy Awards and made stars of the above names, but it pretty much saved the Disney Animation studio from definite bankruptcy and revived it into its Second Golden Age under Jeffrey Katzenberg. There's your Disney trivia for the day =)

Last year, the overall domestic box office came in at a record-breaking $10.83 billion but the picture wasn't so rosy for Dreamworks Animation. Spun off as a separate company in 2004 with former Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg as CEO, the animation studio has always played second-fiddle to Pixar due to their overreliance on sequels, and the quality of their work has been mixed at best, often emphasizing slapstick humor and satire over story (i.e. the "Shrek" series). There's also the fact that some of their films are clearly meant to be launchpads for new franchises, which is always a risky e ...
As I said earlier regarding layoffs and firings. These are billionaires doing this. because the bottom line matters. Obama Mega-Bundler and Donor Announces Layoffs, Possibly Linked To China Outsourcing From the Hollywood Reporter. Dreamworks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said Tuesday that layoffs already have begun and that 350 of the studio’s 2,200 employees will have been let go by year’s end. “These things are very, very difficult to do,” Katzenberg told The Hollywood Reporter. “I would say it’s the hardest thing I’ve had to do since we started DreamWorks. We’ve never had to lay anybody off. It was against our culture. But it’s the right thing for us today, and it makes DWA strong going forward.” Interesting choice of words. Going FORWARD! Who knew that Seth MacFarlane was such a great singer? (That's rhetorical as my older kids who worship at the Seth is God altar knew). Armageddon vs. Deep Impact Armageddon Release Date: July 1st, 1998 Deep Impact Release Date: May 8th, 1998 In 1994, Disney animation chief Jeffrey Katzenberg joined with Steven Spielberg and David Geffen, to form DreamWorks. As a fledgling studio, they would often partner with other studios to defray costs of production. There was also considerable animosity between DreamWorks and Disney. This led to many projects in the 1990′s which covered similar (or exactly the same) material by both companies. Armageddon and Deep Impact both covered the territory of asteroids or meteors hitting Earth. As a matter of fact, Disney chief Joe Roth spent additional ad money just to differentiate the two films. Ultimately, Disney would win the box office battle ($201,578,182 for Armageddon vs. $140,464,664 for Deep Impact.) However, bad blood would get even worse later on.

JINOS - Jews in Name Only. (Yes, I just made this term up.) I remember the effects of the Holocaust. My friend's maid came from a camp. Her face was scarred badly. I only saw her once for a nano second. If you came in the house, she ran and hid. But Jews seem to have forgotten about the Holocaust and they've forgotten common sense, when they support Obama. The biggest book sale in Muslim countries is the Koran. The second biggest book sales is MEIN KAMPF, which Hitler had translated into Arabic. Well, duh, why do you think Mein Kampf is so popular in Arabic countries? It advocates killing Jews and other defectives. So why are prominent Jews like Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg raising billions for Obama? Do they think they'll spared from future concentration camps? Ask Oprah if Obama remembers those who help him. Ask Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods and the other SEAL if Obama is faithful to those who serve him.

Remember when Liberals and Democrats actually had credibility with their ideology – in the days before Gary Hart? But now, we see Democrats as the rich spoiled snobs much more than anyone else? To wit – just this week:: 1. Hollywood’s DreamWorks owner Jeffrey Katzenberg gave 3.5 million to the Obama Super Pac this year. 2. Steven Spielberg gave 3.5 million. 3. Chicago’s Fred Eychaner, who owns a company which holds a virtual monopoly on publishing college newspapers, donated 3.3 million to Obama. 4. The fool who owns the Simpsons television show donated a paltry $500,000 by Democratic PAC standards. Liberals: Please enlighten me on three things: 1. Again, why exactly were you against “Citizens United,” and huge amounts of PAC money being given to presidential campaigns? 2. Is it true that you still believe “rich Republicans” buy elections with only a few rich people donors? 2. Do you still deny that an incredibly cash-rich and hyper partisan Liberal Media and Liberal Plexus actually exis ...

When Clint Eastwood stated that we own this country, he very callously and rudely did not give credit to other very important owners such as Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase and even Jeffrey Katzenberg and the Koch family. All of these people have very graciously help lead our country with their ownership and they should always be thanked for their charity!
"A pro-Obama Super PAC funded almost exclusively by leftist and Hollywood elites like Bill Maher ($1 million), Morgan Freeman ($1 million) Jeffrey Katzenberg ($2 million), Steven Spielberg ($100,000), JJ Abrams ($50,000) is responsible for a false and likely illegal attack ad on Mitt Romney," the blast begins. The ad in question tells the story of a woman who died of cancer and suggests that, had she not been laid off by Romney's Bain Capital, she would have lived. CNN fact-checked the ad and found it to be inaccurate. The Romney campaign has disputed the spot's accuracy and disparaged the Obama campaign for not denouncing it.
The recent Priorities USA campaign commercial connecting Mitt Romney to the death of a woman from cancer may rank as the most despicable, and downright dishonest, political ads ever created. •Hard-left comedian Bill Maher famously cut a $1 million check for the group. •Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman, who has grown more political and stridently so since Obama took office, did the same. •DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg coughed up $2 million to help Priorities USA come up with such unsavory, factually bankrupt ads
I just found out that far-left Hollywood elites like Bill Maher, Morgan Freeman, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Steven Spielberg are responsible for funding despicable, lying anti-Romney “death” ad. The ad -- by Obama Super PAC Priorities USA Action -- falsely claims that Romney’s work at Bain Capital caused a woman to die from cancer. But that’s simply not true. Romney was not at Bain when the husband lost his job. Plus, the wife who died had insurance through her own job unrelated to Bain! Plus, there is now evidence that the Obama campaign was likely illegally working with the SuperPAC on this ad! I just signed a CITIZEN NOTICE to Priorities USA and leftist elites like Maher, Freeman and Spielberg demanding that this ad be withdrawn, with apologies. Please join me by going here:

Morgan Freeman has given President Barack Obama $1,000,000 to combat the conservatives he has branded as racist. Freeman, along with Obama mega donor Irwin Jacobs, provided the Obama Super PAC with half of its $6 million haul in June—its largest single month to date. The Oscar-winning actor has good company in Tinsel Town. Freeman joins a relatively small cadre of high-profile Hollywood figures who have contributed to the pro-Obama super PAC, including director Steven Spielberg, comedian Chelsea Handler, producer/writerJ.J. Abrams and producer Jeffrey Katzenberg, who helped start the group last year with $2 million. Read More at . By Wahington Free Beacon Staff.

From the article: Barbra Streisand is still backing President Obama's re-election campaign, but she won't be singing for the president on his next fund-raising stop in Southern California.
