Our African American of the Day is not a person. But of something I just ran across in my research of Black History. It is a book that was started by Victor H. Green entitled "The *** Motorist Greenbook." Read below to find out what it is. How Did Blacks Travel During Segregation? The *** Motorist Green Book was helpful for navigating Jim Crow America. -- In 1936 a Harlem postal worker and activist named Victor H. Green decided to develop a guide that would help African Americans travel throughout the country in a safe and comfortable manner. The *** Motorist Green Book (also called The *** Travelers' Green Book), often simply known as The Green Book, identified places that welcomed black people during an era when Jim Crow laws and de facto segregation made it difficult for them to travel domestically without fear of racial backlash. The Green Book listed businesses and places of interest such as nightclubs, beauty salons, barbershops, gas stations and garages that catered to black road-tripper ...

SAVE THE DATE: The Missouri tryouts for StateWars will tentatively be held on 3/30 in Jefferson City, MO. The organizers would like to invite any officials in the area to come help out at tryouts. It will most likely be at Sk8 Zone and will probably be from 5-9pm. They are expecting two hours of scrimmages. More details should come in a week or so, but please save the date. If you are unfamiliar with State Wars, each state is creating a team to send to a tournament in Daytona Beach in November. Coaches from each state will select their best 20 skaters from a pool of applicants -- much like the World Cup. More information at the official application on the Web site is for the November tournament, NOT this tryout in March.

Please write or call your MO state legislator today! Jim ;-) Constitutional amendment approval would means politics back in Missouri conservation — GUEST OPINION — By Kenneth L. Kieser “An expert is someone who knows some of the worst mistakes that can be made in his subject, and how to avoid them.” Werner Heisenberg, Physics and Beyond Kenneth L. Kieser Kenneth L. Kieser I am not a political activist. However, I have never been shy of writing or speaking my opinion when a bill or legislation concerns conservation or hunting and fishing, especially in Missouri. There currently is a proposed constitutional amendment working its way through the State Capitol that would completely change the way conservation is regulated in Missouri. If approved by voters, SJR42 (Senator Schmitt from Kirkwood) and HJR57 (Representative Barnes from Jefferson City) would create a permanent Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, meaning, the General Assembly would govern conservation. I have traveled the entire Unite ...

I used to be a supporter of this group until they sold out the highest bidder with the deepest pockets...we all know who that is. Last year I saw their new head man lie in an ag committee meeting Jefferson City. Beware of these people...they are dangerous on levels you can't even imagine!

BB Pistol On Bus (Feb. 24, 2014) A Thomas Jefferson Middle School 8th grade student was taken into custody by the Jefferson City Police this afternoon after he was found in possession of a BB pistol on Bus All students on the bus are safe. The student had the pistol on the bus and was showing it to other students. The bus driver was told by at least one bus rider that a student had the pistol and the driver contacted First Student Transportation and the police were called. The bus stopped near Tom Lee Drive and students were asked to exit the bus and the police were able to ascertain which student had the weapon. The matter is still under investigation, but we wanted families to know of the situation. This is a serious reminder that parents and schools must work together to help children understand the ramifications of bringing any kind of weapon, even a toy, on to school grounds.

I met my Jr. High & High School friend and brother Eagle Scout, Art Hogan this past Sunday who I have not seen in 50 years! After having a wonderful afternoon and evening reminiscing I thought I would post a copy of the newspaper article that honored all of us when we received our Eagle Scout Awards. All at the same time (Scout Sunday 1962) and in the same troop (Troop 2, in Jefferson City, MO). FYI, the Merit Badge Sash (which has every Merit Badge one could have earned at that time) belonged to our Mentor, Mr Paul Doll (not pictured), a distinguished Eagle Scout himself. I will put our a request that if any of my or Art's friends know any of the other individuals in the photo and how to get in touch with them, please let us know. We have lost a couple but would like to get back together with those remaining. They are a great bunch of guys.

Tomorrow is a very special day for me. I will be addressing the business studies classes at Lincoln University, right here in my adopted home town, Jefferson City Missouri. The school was founded on the heels of the Civil War as Lincoln Institute in 1866 by veterans of the 62nd and 65th Regiments United States Colored Troops (USCT) Infantry. My sister Kimberly is a graduate of Lincoln in Criminal Justice and my beautiful daughter Ivana attends Lincoln. The founding of this wonderful place of higher learning, is the perfect example of the power of Vision, grit, planning and determination. Wish me luck. Ivan

Dear Jimmy Fallon, or anyone who knows how to get a hold of him: Please come to the Diocese of Jefferson City to any church in the diocese and feel most welcome. I've celebrated mass in every one of our churches more than once and in no church in this diocese do we held hands all during mass. There are no beach balls, no lighters, and there is sacred music. For those who agree with Jimmy for why he left the church, come to one of our Catholic Masses here. They're pretty much what Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict, Pope Francis and all those who carry on the Sacred Tradition expect! (I'm serious, I want Jimmy and all others to return to the sacraments. I pray for their return before each mass.)
Meanwhile, in Jefferson City... Missouri's proposed budget includes billions of dollars for schools, millions more for scholarships and $8 for tin foil hats. The $8 appropriation recommended Wednesday by a House education funding panel is only partly a joke. It's meant to make a point that some lawmakers aren't too pleased by what they consider to be paranoia about new Common Core standards for public schools. The tin foil amendment was put forth by committee chairman Rep. Mike Lair, a Republican from Chillicothe who is a retired teacher. —Associated Press

Pups, DDs, and PDDs, you might be interested in this meet-and-greet event with the "Saluting Marine" at the American Legion Post 5 in Jefferson City this coming Sunday. Some background: There’s an annual event in Washington, DC called Rolling Thunder Sunday, during which thousands of veterans ride their motorcycles to the Vietnam Memorial. It’s an incredible display of patriotism and comradeship — the kind of thing you’d expect from guys who were willing to risk their lives for the rest of us. For the last few years, one Marine has stood at attention in the middle of the street in full dress uniform, holding a continuous, unbroken salute for every biker in the procession. His remarkable exhibition of strength and dedication lasts more than four hours. That Marine, the Saluting Marine, is retired Staff Sergeant Tim Chambers. Marine Chambers decided he wanted to do something to show all the other vets how much he cared, so he spontaneously stepped into the road to salute to the riders. That first sa ...

Today’s Black History Fact is for my independent ladies! And if you are ever in Houston Texas, check out the Buffalo Soldiers Museum, Cathay is there she is the Only Known Female Buffalo Soldier — FROM HER HUMBLE start in Missouri, Cathay Williams made her way into the record books of military history as the only known and documented female buffalo soldier. Williams was born a slave in Jackson County and moved to Jefferson City with her family and master as a small child. In 1862, as the Union soldiers moved through Jefferson City, several slaves, including Williams, were confiscated by the 8th Indiana Infantry as ”contraband“ and taken to Arkansas. While with the 8th Indiana Infantry, she worked as a cook and laundress. After the war was over, Williams found work as a cook at Jefferson Barracks near St. Louis. Not long after this, she decided she was going to join the army so that she could make her own way and not be dependent on others. On Nov. 15, 1866, she enlisted in the 38th Infantry, Compa ...

What a weekend! My niece, gave my sisters and I tickets to Mamma Mia at the Fox. Carol had comp rooms at Hollywood Casino. All of us came home "ahead" from the casino the other two much better than me. Shopping today at Chesterfield Mall. Driving home on very very slick roads--15 cars in the median or ditch (10 between Linn to Jefferson City) and then another on 94. Driving was stressful but we made it and even laughed several times on the way home. Thank you, Jessie, for the tickets. Thank you, Carol, for the comp room. Thank you, Sheila, for buying breakfast. Most of all, Thank you, Jesus, for watching over us!
I understand the concerns of the Eminence Trails that may be closed by the US Forest Service. I don't have the full story and I will try to keep my personal political opinions out of this. However, since I have worked for the Federal government in a former career, I am aware of how much influence state government opinions will weigh in on this very subject. I can add the website information, but the best method is still phone calls and letters to let the State of Missouri know how much you all feel about this subject and the economic impact on the tourism of Missouri: Mailing Address Office of Governor Jay Nixon P.O. Box 720 Jefferson City, MO 65102 Phone: (573) 751-3222 For those of you who only have time for an email, please feel free to add that, too:

SO PROUD of our Missouri Mom Melissa who went to Jefferson City to speak against SB613, which would lower the concealed carry age to 19. The bill's author, Sen. Brian Nieves (R-Washington) was caught putting his foot in his mouth when he said: "We all know teenagers are stupid. We are not arguing whether teenagers are stupid." At the end of this video, around 4:20, Melissa can respond to his statement and says: " When you said that teenagers were stupid, we all laughed. Because we have them, or we know them or we were one. Why would we put a loaded weapon in their hands?" Nieves replies: "True. And you know the rule that I said before is you can't ask questions of the jury….Sure, I won't deny that's a valid point….."
This could easily be Boston=Jefferson City!! Have you ever tried to find a stretch of road that is straight and either NS or EW?!?! Almost impossible! Do you realize that our beautiful little city has streets that change names...for no apparent reason! You go through an intersection & boom, it's a new name! Eastland to Seven Hills to Ellis to Southwest Blvd!!! Why? Industrial to Truman to Country Club... Why?!?!?! Lol! Also, we LOVE to have the same street name with every kind of title; Fox trail, Fox Court, Fox Lane, Fox Drive... Why?!?! Our law enforcement, postal workers & delivery folks deserve hardship bonuses! And city planning & code... Lord, don't get me started! Ah well, we were voted prettiest, and my girls tell me it doesn't matter if you're a big ole mess, as long as you're cute!!
This Saturday, Feb 1, the Jefferson City Disc Golf Club, JCDGC, is hosting an Ice Bowl to benefit the Samaritan Center. Even if you don't play disc golf, you are welcome and encouraged to drop by Binder Lake to make a donation of cash or canned good and non-perishable food items. Last year, Jefferson City ranked in the top 20 cities in the nation in regards to pounds of food and amount of money raised. They beat out BIG cities like Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The members of the JCDGC work really hard to make this tournament a blessing for the Samaritan Center and we could REALLY use your help this year! Someone will be at the concession building near the ball fields. Drop by!

Today in OUR Sstory - January 9 * "1866 - Fisk College is established in Nashville, Tennessee. Rust College is established in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Lincoln University is established in Jefferson City, Missouri. 1901 - Edward Mitchell Bannister joins the ancestors in Providence, Rhode Island. Challenged to become an artist after reading a newspaper article deriding African Americans' ability to produce art, he disproved that statement throughout a distinguished art career. 1906 - Poet and author, Paul Laurence Dunbar, joins the ancestors after succumbing to tuberculosis. Dunbar was so talented and versatile that he succeeded in two worlds. He was so adept at writing verse in Black English that he became known as the "poet of his people," while also cultivating a white audience that appreciated the brilliance and value of his work. "Majors and Minors" (1895), Dunbar's second collection of verse, was a remarkable work containing some of his best poems in both Black and standard English. When the cou .. ...

Every year I got more and more ambitions with the non Cornerstone portions of the "Great American Road Trip" as I called it. I got down to Jefferson City, and then St. Louis, and saw the state capitol, the old prison, Six Flags St. Louis (note: you do want to wear water socks or sandals on the asphalt paths in the waterpark!) the Gateway Arch, and the Clark Bridge. In St Louis the blower controls in my car shorted to the "on" position overnight, this was before I had triple A so it took several hours to get someone out to jump my car, and for the rest of the trip I had to pop the hood and pull the blower fuse every time I stopped. I've driven over every Mississippi River bridge between Minneapolis and St. Louis except for two in the St. Louis area on my trips, as well as both Great River Roads except for a short stretch in St. Louis. Cornerstone ended before I could finish this, so I plan to fly down to St. Louis this spring to finish what I had started.
I was going to post this as a Black History installment but this school needs financial help please share this information and perhaps enough people will want to help save this Historical University... Please read Lincoln Institute of Jefferson City, MO is America’s oldest historically black university in the United States. Founded in 1854, the University was originally founded as the Ashmun Institute, named after Jehudi Ashmun, who also worked to establish the country of Liberia. It was renamed to honor Abraham Lincoln in 1866. The school was funded by soldiers of the 62nd Colored Infantry with $5,000. An additional $1,400 was given by the 65th Colored Infantry. Lincoln Institute officially opened its doors on September 17, 1866 under the leadership of first lieutenant Richard Baxter Foster. Finally, in 1921, it was renamed Lincoln University. I got 15 . . . . 1. I love to travel. 2. I have lived in 2 different countries besides the US (Mexico for about 3 years, Guatemala for about 3 months.) 3. I love to joke and make people laugh. 4. I've never broken a bone in my life. 5. However, I did have to get stitches twice in my life. Once when I was a kid and hit my head on the ground. Second when I pulled up a music stand and it popped if the stand part and hit me below my bottom lip. 6. I was attacked by a squirrel once when I was a kid. Yes, a squirrel. My family never let's me live that down. 7. I try to be a people pleaser at times. Very rarely works. 8. When I was in 4th grade, my class took a field trip to the the Missouri state capitol, Jefferson City. (I lived in Missouri at the time.) I got to sit in the "got seat" at the front of the state house of representatives floor that no visitors were normally allowed to step out on. Attorney General Koster announces first-degree murder conviction in Kansas City case Jefferson City, Mo. -- Attorney General Chris Koster said today that a Jackson County jury found Tawanda Kunonga, 29, of Kansas City, guilty October 29 of first degree murder and armed criminal action in the killing of Latoya Hopkins of Raytown. Kunonga murdered his ex-girlfriend Latoya Hopkins in her home in June 2010 by stabbing her and beating her with a meat tenderizer. Kunonga left his fingerprint and palm print in the victim's blood and his DNA was found at the crime scene. "This was a horrific crime," Koster said. "While nothing can lessen the loss for the victim’s friends and family, at least the conviction brings some measure of justice." The defendant represented himself throughout the pre-trial proceedings and throughout the seven day jury trial. Jackson County Circuit Judge Charles McKenzie presided over the trial, and assistant attorneys general Julie Tolle and Monty Platz served as special prosecutors. S . ...

A couple weeks ago, we brought you the story of a boat crash involving a Water Patrol vessel. There's been some new developments in the case: The pilot of a boat that collided with a Missouri State Highway Patrol boat on the Lake of the Ozarks is facing charges. The Camden County prosecutor on Thursday charged 55-year-old Brian Pecenka, of Lake Ozark, with four counts of second-degree assault with a vessel and a misdemeanor of not displaying navigation lights on his boat. The patrol says Pecenka turned in front of a patrol boat being driven by 35-year-old Trooper Stephen Burgun, of Jefferson City, on Aug. 29. Burgun's boat hit the starboard side of Pecenka's boat, which flooded and capsized. Burgun spent the night in the hospital.

I've taken my "Sweet Queen" on many excursions in the past 48 years, via various modes, mainly personal transport; Alexandria, Baltimore, Canada, Detroit, Estes Park, Florida, Gulf of Mexico, Hannibal, Indianapolis, Jefferson City, Kentucky, Lincoln, Minneapolis, Niagara Falls, Omaha, Philadelphia, Quincy, Rabbit Ear Pass, Snowy Range, Tucumcari, Unionville, Virginia City, Washington DC, Xenia, Ypsilanti and Zanesville. Before service started last Sun eve, I had to take my Queen back to the castle... Sure wasn't ready for that "toll." First Sun service she's missed since Dave, our oldest son was born, (on a Sunday,) 47 years ago... Friday July 5 1861 CARTHAGE CONFLICT CAUSES CONFUSION Claiborne Jackson was the legally elected governor of Missouri, but today he was nowhere near the state capital of Jefferson City. He, along with some 4000 fellow Confederate supporters, was down near Carthage, Mo,on the run from Gen. Nathaniel Lyon. They today discovered that besides Lyon behind them, they had Brig. Gen. Franz Sigel in front of them. Jackson got Sigel to attack, then rolled up his flanks in a very good use of cavalry. Sigel retired to await Lyon, whIle Jackson moved to join Sterling Price. Saturday July 5 1862 NOTABLE NAVAL NEGOTIATIONS NEARING The outbreak of war had seen the US Navy in dilapidated condition, as many ships, shipyards and commanders wound up in Confederate hands. Progress was made over the last year, but more was on the way. A bill, sponsored by Senator Grimes of Iowa, was about to authorize new Bureaus of the Navy. They included separate bureaus for Steam Engineering, Construction and Repairs, Navigation, and Medicin ...

My coach asked me today to think about some of my greatest accomplishments and what contributed to them, so here is one that humbles me to this day: In the 10th grade I went to Jefferson City, Missouri into the Capitol to participate in an awesome YMCA program called Youth in Government. I wrote a bill that almost made it to the docket and thought the Speaker of the House was a god. In 11th grade, I campaigned and was elected Speaker of the House by hundreds of delegates across the state who did not know me at all. As Speaker in the 12th grade, we followed Roberts Rules of Order, and I got mixed up on a point of order. Someone moved to table a bill, and I passed the motion with a majority. Someone called "point of order" and pointed out that it took a 3/4 majority to table a bill. We got it squared away and I had my Pro Temp take over while I went to the woman who had been elected Governor's office to cry. She and the Lieutenant Governor instilled a renewed confidence in me. I went back and we had a smoot ...

The first round of the 2013 Junior Collegiate Preview took place on Thursday, June 27th at Eagle Knoll Golf Club in Hartsburg, MO. The weather was sunny and hot and the players were allowed to ride in carts because of the high heat index. The heat didn’t keep away low scores on the boy’s side of the tournament. Austin Buente, of Troy, Ill shot a one under 71 to lead the boys after the first day. Right behind him are Brett Windsor from Boonville with an even par 72 and David Bennett from Branson at 73, one over par. Taylor Hayes, of Lake Ozark, is leading the girls division. Hayes is coming off of a win at the Hieronymous Series tournament at Kirksville and also won the HJS event at Cameron earlier this month. Hayes shot 76, 4 over par, in the first round and is seven strokes ahead of second place Jenna Kosmatka, of Jefferson City. Racheal Pearson from Fenton is in third after shooting 86. After play, the players were invited to attend a seminar given by Rich Laing from the College Rec ...
Miracles Silent night "No observed traffic west of the airport, have a good night." Those words from Jefferson City tower faded from the speaker and the cockpit of our Piper Cherokee was once again silent - except for the drone of the powerful engine. As I monitored our progress on the GPS, my wife and copilot Sue was absorbed in the lights scattered across the countryside. Our time in the sky is always a precious opportunity to get away from distractions and contemplate every aspect of our lives, from family, to the God who created this great universe we enjoy and seemingly suspends us in His own hand. Ten days earlier we had made another night flight. I had dutifully filled in my logbook with the entry for the 2.9 hour flight, mentally noting that we had burned 2.6 hours of fuel after refueling. As we floated westward, the predicted headwinds began increasing sooner than expected. It became apparent that when we arrived at our destination, our fuel reserve would be thirty minutes instead of forty-five. ...

Ok, It looks like its a go. details are still being worked out but we have decided to put together an Angiepalooza-REBOOT. Due to some unfortunate weather that popped up unexpectedly at our June 15th Angiepalooza, we had to make some changes on the fly and several bands either had abbreviated sets or none at all. These guys REALLY wanted to play and we wanted to show them off,. SO.we're preparing to put together that opportunity in downtown Jefferson City on High Street, (very similar to the Thursday Night Live events) in late September. This will be a free event with a festival area that with the purchase of an event cup (16oz for $2) you can drink your choice of beverage on the street. Bands on the bill are: Five Turn Knot, Soul Root, and the Cherry Pistols. Looking like we're shooting at late September (probably the 28th) as our "go" date. This should be a lot of fun and a great opportunity to see great bands, dance in streets, and "get your Angie" on. Nobody in the world loved a good party more than m ...

Monday June 17 1861 BOONVILLE BATTLE BADLY BORNE Gen. Nathaniel Lyon had been chasing Gov. Claiborne Jackson across his state of Missouri for some time now. He had chased him out of the capital of Jefferson City without a shot being fired; today he did the same, albeit with some minor use of weaponry, in Boonville. Boonville, Mo., is not one of those great place-names like Sharpsburg or Manassas, but its effect was larger than its population. The town gave the Union control of the Missouri River, and thereby most of the north and east of the state. Tuesday June 17 1862 COMMAND CHAGES CAUSE CONSIDERABLE CONSTERNATION Gen John Pope was ordered to head East today to command a new entity called the Army of Virginia. This was a consolidation of the armies of Fremont and Banks. Gen. Fremont was so vexed at having to serve under Pope that he resigned. His replacement was Maj. Gen. Franz Sigel, who was not, alas, a great commander either. He was, however, utterly beloved by the German immigrants who made up such ...
Missouri (1821) To the north of Missouri lies Iowa; across the Mississippi River to the east, Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee; to the south, Arkansas; and to the west, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. With the exception of Tennessee, Missouri has more neighboring states than any other U.S. state. Bisecting the state is the Missouri River, flowing from Kansas City in the west, through the state's capital, Jefferson City, in the center, to just above St. Louis in the east, where it joins the Mississippi. Missouri was the name of a group of indigenous people who lived in the area at the time of European settlement; the French named the river after the native community, and the river, in turn, gave its name to the state.
Leaders and residents alike have been debating for decades the merits of building a second high school in Jefferson City, but what will it take to move the needle? It’s likely board members and administrators eventually will craft another plan to take to voters.
I love me some 95.7 when driving home from Jefferson City on Saturday evenings, even though I don't think songs from my childhood should be referred to as the oldies!!! I was disappointed that tonight, it was staticy, but still got to hear some of my favorites: Redneck Girl, Baby's Got Her Bluejeans On, The Gambler, some old Alabama music, some Charlie Daniels Band. The only thing that would have made it better is if I would have heard Just a Swingin' and Islands in the Stream!
Friday June 14 1861 JACKSON JUDGES JOB JEOPARDIZED Governor Claiborne Jackson (who would later be known as “Claib” to his opponents in the First Iowa Volunteers) had fled from St. Louis, where he had held a meeting with Gen. Nathaniel Lyon, back halfway across the state to the capital of Jefferson City. Along the way he had burned the bridges behind him in more than a metaphorical manner to prevent Lyon’s Union troops from chasing him. The effort was evidently inadequate, as Jackson today began to evacuate the capital. Lyon’s men were on the way. Saturday June 14 1862 CHICKAHOMINY CUTOFF CAUSES CAVALRY CONSTERNATION Jeb Stuart’s men had been more or less constantly in the saddle since 2 a.m. three days before. They got off their horses today, but not for purposes of rest. They had reached the Chickahominy River to discover that the bridge they had been counting on at Forge Site had been destroyed by the Yankees. A frantic three hours’ work repaired it enough for them to cross, and they began t ...

Good morning to all my wonderful FB friends and family from a wonderful, and low cost of living, city in west central Missouri called "Sedalia". A great little town of 20,000 plus referred to as "The Queen City of the Prairie" - "The State Fair City" - "A City of Trees" - "The End of the Rawhide Trail" - and my personal favorite, "Home". It's currently 65* and warm, while it's 67* and warm over in the State Capitol of Jefferson City. Getting ready for two upcoming events, Saturday is "Open House" at the Post when we recognize our local Heroes, the service members of the 35th Combat Aviation Brigade, just returned from Afghanistan, and our local Police Dept. Then also, Missouri Boy's State starts this Saturday at Univ. of Central Missouri thru the following Saturday. Will be extremely busy this coming week.but, also remember an American Legion saying, "Still Serving America" and "Everyday is Veterans Day".whew, that was a lot...hehehehe COFFEE is good this am and I wish each of you a wonderful day.
