Ninety-six years ago today... Jan 16, 1919 Prohibition takes effect By the turn of the century, Hermann was producing over 3 million gallons of wine annually. Steamboats bearing cargo and visitors arrived regularly from St. Louis. A train line was built from Hermann to the state’s capital, Jefferson City. But hard times were just around the corner. First, Prohibition decimated the wine industry. And then anti-German sentiment arose with the coming of WWI. A state edict forbade the use of the German language. In 1920, Hermann sank into an economic depression that would last until WWII. Nearly 50 years after prohibition, Hermann started to produce wine again. Today there are 7 wineries, producing a third of the state’s total production. Wineries are the main tourist attraction for Hermann, just as it was before prohibition. Because Hermann’s citizens could not afford to modernize their buildings during the depression, Hermann today contains many lovely 1800s buildings, more than 150 of which are on th ...

December 9 1852 The first train ever to run west of the Mississippi made a run over five miles of completed track on the Pacific Railroad. The line began at 14th and Chouteau and ended at Cheltenham, in what is now southwest St. Louis. The rails reached Kirkwood in May 1853 and Jefferson City in 1855. 1878 A representative of Joseph Pulitzer purchased the bankrupt St. Louis Dispatch for $2,500 at a sheriff’s sale. Within hours of the auction at the Old Courthouse, The editor of the Post approached Pulitzer, and proposed a merger. The first edition of the St. Louis Post and Dispatch hit the streets on December 12th. 1922 John Elroy Sanford was born in St. Louis. He dropped out of school at age 13 to break into show business and became known as “Redd” because of his complexion. He also took the name of baseball player Jimmy Foxx. To All NCBW Members: “BLACK LIVES MATTER” The National Coalition of 100 Black Women expressed continued disappointment over the grand jury decision in the shooting death of Michael Brown of Ferguson, Missouri, and the chokehold death of Eric Garner in New York. National President Michele McNeill-Emery, speaking on behalf of the Coalition’s 60 chapters in 29 states, has called the decision “outrageous and appalling. We stand united with the community and other activists groups, demanding that all police officers wear operable body cameras; that police departments reflect the diversity of the community that they are serving; and that Congress passes the End Racial Profiling Act.” An article recently penned by a New York civil rights attorney focused on “how to police the police.” This is a question as old as civilization and the results are depressingly predictable to more than a few. From California to New York, the issue of restraining police power leaves the question “can the cops be co . ...

We live in Jefferson City, Missouri. It continues to rank on the "Beautiful Small Towns of America" list. The state Capitol is stunning, inside and out. There are old elegant homes. Small businesses line our busy downtown streets. There are traditions here. Tonight is a huge one: Living Windows. A path is made through the downtown streets. People carol and dress up in store fronts, hayrides go around, the streets are teeming with life and Christmas celebrations. A seven-year-old friend of ours is dressed as a ballerina and standing in a window. Another friend's son is participating in a high school choir in the bank where Santa will sit and visit with children. Today is kind of a big day. Tomorrow is the Christmas parade...and quite frankly, we're missing all of it. Besides the beautiful sounds of children's laughter and joyous singing, in Jefferson City today there rang out cries of distress and anger. Protesters spent the last week walking from Ferguson, MO to Jefferson City and arrived this afternoon . ...
Good thing the protesters made it to Jefferson City Missouri, now hopefully our convenient store clerks get the message. If a black man doesn't want to pay for his 99 cent cigarellos then don't try to stop him or call the cop's. Also I hope the cops around here get it through there thick skulls not to shoot their gun as they are trained when being attacked by a person of color because that would make them racist. Forensic evidence won't matter, multiple black eye witnesses won't matter. Dont matter how big or tall, they are all gentle sweet young kids who follow the law really well. No justice, no peace.

White-privileged people: "Pacifism and the refusal to even consider the necessity for strategic militancy is a death sentence for our movements and the planet. Get this through your heads... If you think my people will be able to use nonviolence as an end strategy to overcome white supremacist violence, you need to pick up the nearest copy of Howard Zinn and stop talking about resistance with just other white people." ~ DGR's Kourtney Mitchell (Member of DGR Steering Committee and POC Caucus) DGR advocates a full-range of strategies for resistance to full-range domination. While protests and marches are helpful for community spirit and political education, they are largely symbolic in terms of systemic change. White supremacy needs to be dismantled, not bargained with. Still, it is better to do something rather than nothing, and part of organized resistance is activist engagement in solidarity actions and peaceful protests - and the radicalizing effects of activist commitment to justice. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 20, 2014 Voters can now send in absentee ballot applications Jefferson City, Missouri, October 20, 2014 – The Jefferson City Branch of the NAACP, which will host its 51st Annual Freedom Fund Dinner and Silent Auction on Saturday, Nov. 1, wishes to express how important voting is in helping to make America a better place. This year’s theme for the Freedom Fund Dinner is “Equal Protection Under the Law.” The NAACP feels that in order to afford all citizens with the equal protection guaranteed by law, we all must do our part to actively work to oppose Jim Crow voting laws that our current legislature seeks to impose. In addition, we must vote for those officials we feel will work to uphold and protect our interests. An unwillingness or inability to attend your official polling station is no excuse to hinder voting as voters may choose to cast a ballot before Election Day during the in-person absentee voting period or may apply for an absentee ballot in order to vote by m ...

September 27 1817 Another famous duel was fought on "Bloody Island," now a part of the East St. Louis river front. Charles Lucas and Thomas Hart Benton had already wounded each other in an earlier duel. This time, Benton would kill Lucas. The incident would haunt him for the rest of his political career. 1864 Rebel forces led by Sterling Price moving toward St. Louis were held up by outnumbered Union forces at Pilot Knob. Over 1,000 Confederates were killed or wounded in 20 minutes in a frontal assault on Fort Davidson that day. Price turned into Franklin County and marched towards Jefferson City but went around it after learning the city had been reinforced. The Civil War in Missouri ended when Price was defeated at Westport, near Kansas City on October 23.. 1953 The St. Louis Browns played their final game. Lyon said he would see “every man, woman and child in the state dead and buried” before conceding that the state had the right to dictate orders to “my government.” He turned to the governor and said: “This means war.” Price and Jackson fled to Jefferson City, burning the bridges behind them. 1875 George Herbert Walker was born in St. Louis. NTPA history was made this year at the conclusion of the Heavy Unlimited class when young veteran Adam Bauer earned his third NTPA Grand National Championship. What was historic about it was the fact that Adam obtained each of the three titles on a different machine. Bauer experienced several mechanical issues early in the season with “Cross Threaded,” but the Bauer Built Team overcame them. Going into the National Tractor Pulling Championships, Adam was 16.5 points behind the leader Ricky Rose, and hoping to maintain his top-five points position. However, after leaving Bowling Green, Ohio, Adam had made up substantial ground in the points race, and won his first Heavy Unlimited class of the year. The next weekend, Brian Shramek and “Young Blood Unleashed” won the first evening in Jefferson City, Missouri, but Bauer found himself in the points lead. The next session, Shramek won again to take the lead over Bauer by one point heading into the division’s season finale in Canfield, Ohio. The top fo ...

Quality lacking as it was back lit and in the cattail shadows. A Least Bittern observed today at Binder Lake in west Jefferson City, (Central) Missouri - always a welcomed find since this bird is a very secretive marshland bird. You may hear one give its low, guttural call, "uh-uh-uh-uh-uh" long before you'll ever see it. These birds nest at Mingo National Wildlife's Monopoly Marsh and possibly adjacent Duck Creek Conservation Area Main Unit.

We are back at home safely and feeling better than when we left early yesterday morning on our way to Missouri State Track finals. Sitting out in the sun all day watching Jacob Neuroth & the Mountain Grove team did wonders for our chest & head congestion. It was such a blessing to be a part of this memorable time in Jacobs life. Even though it rained most all day today they placed 2 , 3. 4th, & then only 5th in the 4x4! There times were better yesterday. So proud of this accomplishment for them. To top it off Dub & I made the front page of the Jefferson City Tribune news paper! Big 8x10 color photo of us cheering our team on. Was I ever cheering! Mouth wide open yelling at the top of my lungs"turn it up Jake, turn it up!" Papa sitting quietly by, smiling , thinking look everyone one that's my grandson!! Man does he make me proud

“IN THE ARENA” 3rd District Legislative Report By State Representative Nate Walker Week of May 11 - 24, 2014 Memorial Day, End of Session Report… The Second Session of the 97th General Assembly adjourned at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16th; however, before we reflect upon that, I would like to first pay special tribute and honor to “Those Who Gave All” recognizing the significance of Memorial Day. This Memorial Day, as we pay our respects to our nation’s fallen heroes, I think it is extremely important that we have a healthy dose of perspective. It is too often easy for all of us as Americans to take our many freedoms for granted; to not fully appreciate the immense privilege it is to live in the greatest nation on this planet. When we do that, we diminish the importance of the sacrifices that have been made to give us this blessing of liberty, and this honor of being Americans. We must continue to remember that we live in a nation that is a shining beacon of hope for the rest of the world. This ...

Capitol update from Paul Hamby; The 2014 Missouri legislative session is over. Hundreds of activists worked this year to change the outcome of legislation. Hundreds, maybe thousands of Missouri citizens spoke up. Not just from the liberty movement, but also liberals, those who want more government, and an array of folks who think legislators go to JC to bring back favors to their friends. The awesome good news from Jefferson City is that our freedoms are still intact. The raiding of the treasury was kept to a minimum. The assault on our rights ran into dead ends in both the house and senate. Medicaid expansion was stopped. Against all odds. The pressure was enormous. Former Missouri Republican Governor and US Senator Kit Bond tried lobbying for expanding this back door Obamacare program. Bond's former staffer - now Missouri state senator Ryan Silvey pushed the program. Governor Nixon and his staff worked every angle to sell and implement Medicaid expansion. But enough Missouri legislators lis ...

365 Days of Black History - APRIL 30TH CHESTER HIMES (1909 - 1984) - Author Chester Himes was born in Jefferson City, Missouri, to parents who were both teachers. He was naturally gifted intellectually, but striving for career success whilst dealing with setbacks and racial animosity proved challenging. Himes outwardly expressed his anger resulting in trouble with the law. He was expelled from Ohio State University and in 1928 he served seven and a half years in the state penitentiary for armed robbery. It was whist in prison that Himes began to write of his life experiences and express his anger creatively. Several of his books featuring black detectives became popular enough to be adapted to film. By the 1950's Himes emigrated to France, where he gained literary fame and kept company with the likes of African American writers James Baldwin and Richard Wright who were both an inspiration to him. 1951: Surgeons Rivers Frederick, Ulysses G. Osage County Missouri Initially settled by French trappers venturing west from St. Louis in 1735, the Louisiana Purchase on the 30th of April 1803 created the Louisiana - Missouri Territory. Missouri gained Statehood on the 10th of August 1821. The first capital was Saint Charles, 1821-1826. Today the capitol is Jefferson City, 1826 - present. The Pioneer settlers came westward as early as 1810 purchasing land in Franklin County. The earliest settlers (1818) were from Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. By 1820, the land was part of Gasconade County which had been carved from Franklin County. Osage County was subsequently formed in 1841 from Gasconade County. In 1855, the bottom part of Osage County was given to form the top half of the new Maries County. Today, Osage County consists of twelve townships: Bonnots Mill, Chamois, Crook, Folk, Frankenstein, Freeburg, Koeltztown, Linn, Loose Creek, Meta, Rich Fountain, and Westphalia. Members... Many of you are aware that we are in the process of seeking an off-campus location where we can begin a social-support group for LGBTQA CN students/staff by fall semester 2014. I have been to two churches to discuss our goals. After lengthy discussion, First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson City decided that they would not be able to provide us with a space. While they are very supportive of our efforts, there is concern that openly aligning themselves with an LGBT group might cause a rift in the church. However, they are taking this opportunity to begin a conversation at FPCJC; talking about the issues facing the LGBT community. I am encouraged by their willingness to take on what can be a divisive issue. Additionally, I have received multiple messages of support from members of FPCJC who wish to help us in any way possible. The other church I have approached is St. Barnabas Episcopal-Lutheran Church in Jefferson City. I was very warmly received by their congregation a few Sundays ago. They .. ...

The HB is sponsored by Rep. Ellington, and the SB is sponsored by Senator Curles.Traveling with us was the teen aged daughter of Yolanda McGregor who is writing a paper about the stop and frisk law. She was introduced to Rep. Ellington who met us outside the house floor, and escorted us all in. When some of the legislators saw all of us coming in, they began smiling and one said here comes his (Rep. Ellington's) entourage. Another one said, yea, he has an entourage all the time. lol. He intoduced the young lady and the rest of us to the house, and had the house photographer take pictures. ReAnna will never forget this day, and how Rep. Ellington and the entire Missouri House of Representatives made her feel so special. Thank you Rep. Ellington. Members o ...
Missouri Department of Insurance offers annuity resources Annuities can provide steady income after retirement Jefferson City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Insurance recommends that all Missourians review their retirement income strategies during National Retirement Planning Week, April 7-11. The department offers free, online resources that can help consumers better understand if annuities might be beneficial additions to their retirement plans. In exchange, the annuity provides periodic payments to the consumer. “As consumers plan for their retirement, they may want to consider annuities as a way to safeguard their financial future,” said John M. Huff, director of the department. “While annuities can be beneficial, they also can be confusing, and not suitable for everyone. Consum ...

*** must've frozen over because I just ran 25 minutes without stopping, not to mention the spandex pants I sported while completing said task. Pretty sure if you told me 8 weeks ago I'd do either of those things I would've laughed in your face and then stuffed my mouth with something involving caramel and chocolate. Feeling double the love for my town and my employer. Thanks to Jefferson City for hosting the upcoming Color Vibe on April 19, two months ago I decided to turn my hatred of running into a challenge. And thanks to the City of Jefferson for offering a healthy employee incentive program, i can actually make money for exercising and participating in a race. That's what I call motivation. Holy crap that was long winded.
Here is the latest economic development news from Jefferson City, as reported by MEDC's Brian Grace at the State Capitol... SENATE FINALLY PASSES TAX CUT PROPOSAL Senator Will Kraus's tax cut bill passed the Legislature on Tuesday with a party-line vote of 23-9, despite concerns from Governor Nixon. The bill, which was granted initial approval by the Senate last week, could reduce state revenue by $620 million annually, when fully enacted. The bill will now be sent to the House for their consideration. The bill would gradually cut the top personal income tax rate from 6% to 5.5%. The cut would take effect in increments of 0.10 percentage points over five years. The bill would also phase in a 25% deduction, in 5% steps, for business income reported on individual tax returns. No reductions would go into effect unless the state's revenue collected in the previous year exceeded the amount of revenue in any one of the three prior years by at least $150 million. The bill would allow an additional $500 pers ...
