Those of you who love yoga in Columbia, please help us protect it! Missouri is trying to tax yoga studios in a way that will make it hard for many to stay open, by considering their individual teachers as part of a large collective business, instead of as independent contractors. Please consider sending a letter to the governor, and in particular, talk about our two great studios in town, Yoga Sol and Alley Cat, as businesses that BOTH give so much to the community. Please write to: Jay Nixon, PO Box 720 Jefferson City, MO 65102 Message me for more details!
Copied from another site: Some of you know that annually since September 11, 2001 local students and community members in Jefferson City, MO have put together different events to support and/or honor the troops, veterans or first responders or a combination of the three. This year the tradition continues with a veteran appreciation dinner and care package program in November called Operation Bugle Boy (OBB). This year the guests of honor are the families of 3 fallen Navy Seals Lt. Michael P. Murphy (Medal of Honor), Petty Officer Danny P. All three were killed in action during Operation Red Wings which was depicted in the best selling book and block-buster movie "Lone Survivor". All three of these men, along with fallen local Marine Lance Corporal Leon Deraps who was killed during Operation Iraqi Freedom, have foundations in their name. To express appreciation to the families of these fallen heroes a commemorative rifle ...

June 11 1800 The Spanish government appointed Daniel Boone commandant or "syndic" of the Femme Osage District in what is now St. Charles County. Boone was granted 850 acres of land, and 650 more acres for each family he brought to the area. Boone served as justice of the peace and commander of the local militia. He held the post until the transfer of government to the United States in 1804. 1861 Pro-Southern Governor Claiborne Jackson and Missouri State Guard commander Sterling Price met with Union General Nathaniel Lyon and Congressman Frank Blair at the Planter’s Hotel. Lyon said he would see “every man, woman and child in the state dead and buried” before conceding that the state had the right to dictate orders to “my government.” He turned to the governor and said: “This means war.” Price and Jackson fled to Jefferson City, burning the bridges behind them. 1875 George Herbert Walker was born in St. Louis. NTPA history was made this year at the conclusion of the Heavy Unlimited class when young veteran Adam Bauer earned his third NTPA Grand National Championship. What was historic about it was the fact that Adam obtained each of the three titles on a different machine. Bauer experienced several mechanical issues early in the season with “Cross Threaded,” but the Bauer Built Team overcame them. Going into the National Tractor Pulling Championships, Adam was 16.5 points behind the leader Ricky Rose, and hoping to maintain his top-five points position. However, after leaving Bowling Green, Ohio, Adam had made up substantial ground in the points race, and won his first Heavy Unlimited class of the year. The next weekend, Brian Shramek and “Young Blood Unleashed” won the first evening in Jefferson City, Missouri, but Bauer found himself in the points lead. The next session, Shramek won again to take the lead over Bauer by one point heading into the division’s season finale in Canfield, Ohio. The top fo ...

Quality lacking as it was back lit and in the cattail shadows. A Least Bittern observed today at Binder Lake in west Jefferson City, (Central) Missouri - always a welcomed find since this bird is a very secretive marshland bird. You may hear one give its low, guttural call, "uh-uh-uh-uh-uh" long before you'll ever see it. These birds nest at Mingo National Wildlife's Monopoly Marsh and possibly adjacent Duck Creek Conservation Area Main Unit.

We are back at home safely and feeling better than when we left early yesterday morning on our way to Missouri State Track finals. Mouth wide open yelling at the top of my lungs"turn it up Jake, turn it up!" Papa sitting quietly by, smiling , thinking look everyone one that's my grandson!! Man does he make me proud

“IN THE ARENA” 3rd District Legislative Report By State Representative Nate Walker Week of May 11 - 24, 2014 Memorial Day, End of Session Report… The Second Session of the 97th General Assembly adjourned at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16th; however, before we reflect upon that, I would like to first pay special tribute and honor to “Those Who Gave All” recognizing the significance of Memorial Day. This Memorial Day, as we pay our respects to our nation’s fallen heroes, I think it is extremely important that we have a healthy dose of perspective. It is too often easy for all of us as Americans to take our many freedoms for granted; to not fully appreciate the immense privilege it is to live in the greatest nation on this planet. When we do that, we diminish the importance of the sacrifices that have been made to give us this blessing of liberty, and this honor of being Americans. We must continue to remember that we live in a nation that is a shining beacon of hope for the rest of the world. This ...

Capitol update from Paul Hamby; The 2014 Missouri legislative session is over. Hundreds of activists worked this year to change the outcome of legislation. Hundreds, maybe thousands of Missouri citizens spoke up. Not just from the liberty movement, but also liberals, those who want more government, and an array of folks who think legislators go to JC to bring back favors to their friends. The awesome good news from Jefferson City is that our freedoms are still intact. The raiding of the treasury was kept to a minimum. The assault on our rights ran into dead ends in both the house and senate. Medicaid expansion was stopped. Against all odds. The pressure was enormous. Former Missouri Republican Governor and US Senator Kit Bond tried lobbying for expanding this back door Obamacare program. Bond's former staffer - now Missouri state senator Ryan Silvey pushed the program. Governor Nixon and his staff worked every angle to sell and implement Medicaid expansion. But enough Missouri legislators lis ...

365 Days of Black History - APRIL 30TH CHESTER HIMES (1909 - 1984) - Author Chester Himes was born in Jefferson City, Missouri, to parents who were both teachers. He was naturally gifted intellectually, but striving for career success whilst dealing with setbacks and racial animosity proved challenging. Himes outwardly expressed his anger resulting in trouble with the law. He was expelled from Ohio State University and in 1928 he served seven and a half years in the state penitentiary for armed robbery. It was whist in prison that Himes began to write of his life experiences and express his anger creatively. Several of his books featuring black detectives became popular enough to be adapted to film. By the 1950's Himes emigrated to France, where he gained literary fame and kept company with the likes of African American writers James Baldwin and Richard Wright who were both an inspiration to him. 1951: Surgeons Rivers Frederick, Ulysses G. Osage County Missouri Initially settled by French trappers venturing west from St. Louis in 1735, the Louisiana Purchase on the 30th of April 1803 created the Louisiana - Missouri Territory. Missouri gained Statehood on the 10th of August 1821. The first capital was Saint Charles, 1821-1826. Today the capitol is Jefferson City, 1826 - present. The Pioneer settlers came westward as early as 1810 purchasing land in Franklin County. The earliest settlers (1818) were from Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. By 1820, the land was part of Gasconade County which had been carved from Franklin County. Osage County was subsequently formed in 1841 from Gasconade County. In 1855, the bottom part of Osage County was given to form the top half of the new Maries County. Today, Osage County consists of twelve townships: Bonnots Mill, Chamois, Crook, Folk, Frankenstein, Freeburg, Koeltztown, Linn, Loose Creek, Meta, Rich Fountain, and Westphalia. The county seat, located in the center of the county, is Linn
Members... Many of you are aware that we are in the process of seeking an off-campus location where we can begin a social-support group for LGBTQA CN students/staff by fall semester 2014. I have been to two churches to discuss our goals. After lengthy discussion, First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson City decided that they would not be able to provide us with a space. While they are very supportive of our efforts, there is concern that openly aligning themselves with an LGBT group might cause a rift in the church. However, they are taking this opportunity to begin a conversation at FPCJC; talking about the issues facing the LGBT community. I am encouraged by their willingness to take on what can be a divisive issue. Additionally, I have received multiple messages of support from members of FPCJC who wish to help us in any way possible. The other church I have approached is St. Barnabas Episcopal-Lutheran Church in Jefferson City. I was very warmly received by their congregation a few Sundays ago. They .. ...

I am tired, Going to bed, but just had to share this. The HB is sponsored by Rep. Ellington, and the SB is sponsored by Senator Curles.Traveling with us was the teen aged daughter of Yolanda McGregor who is writing a paper about the stop and frisk law. She was introduced to Rep. Ellington who met us outside the house floor, and escorted us all in. Missouri Department of Insurance offers annuity resources Annuities can provide steady income after retirement Jefferson City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Insurance recommends that all Missourians review their retirement income strategies during National Retirement Planning Week, April 7-11. The department offers free, online resources that can help consumers better understand if annuities might be beneficial additions to their retirement plans. Annuities are investment products sold by insurance companies. Consumers buy annuities to generate income or interest on their savings. A consumer pays a lump sum or makes periodic payments to the insurance company. In exchange, the annuity provides periodic payments to the consumer. “As consumers plan for their retirement, they may want to consider annuities as a way to safeguard their financial future,” said John M. Huff, director of the department. “While annuities can be beneficial, they also can be confusing, and not suitable for everyone. Consum ...

*** must've frozen over because I just ran 25 minutes without stopping, not to mention the spandex pants I sported while completing said task. Pretty sure if you told me 8 weeks ago I'd do either of those things I would've laughed in your face and then stuffed my mouth with something involving caramel and chocolate. Feeling double the love for my town and my employer. Thanks to Jefferson City for hosting the upcoming Color Vibe on April 19, two months ago I decided to turn my hatred of running into a challenge. And thanks to the City of Jefferson for offering a healthy employee incentive program, i can actually make money for exercising and participating in a race. That's what I call motivation. Holy crap that was long winded.
Here is the latest economic development news from Jefferson City, as reported by MEDC's Brian Grace at the State Capitol... SENATE FINALLY PASSES TAX CUT PROPOSAL Senator Will Kraus's tax cut bill passed the Legislature on Tuesday with a party-line vote of 23-9, despite concerns from Governor Nixon. The bill, which was granted initial approval by the Senate last week, could reduce state revenue by $620 million annually, when fully enacted. The bill will now be sent to the House for their consideration. The bill would gradually cut the top personal income tax rate from 6% to 5.5%. The cut would take effect in increments of 0.10 percentage points over five years. The bill would also phase in a 25% deduction, in 5% steps, for business income reported on individual tax returns. No reductions would go into effect unless the state's revenue collected in the previous year exceeded the amount of revenue in any one of the three prior years by at least $150 million. The bill would allow an additional $500 pers ...

State Sen. Paul LeVota, D-Independence, along with Independence Superintendent Dale Herl, have proposed legislation in Jefferson City this week that would reimburse students enrolled in a dual-credit college course through the A+ Program. Currently the A+ Program funds the first two years of tuition at either a community college or technical school for eligible students. This bill would give the option of either funding students already enrolled in dual-credit courses or community college/technical school tuition. This bill, Missouri SB848, aligns with the district's recent announcement of giving all students the option to graduate high school with an associates degree by 2018. Levota says SB848 has received "positive reception" and will go through the Senate and education committee next.

BLACK HISTORY FACT: Cathay Williams (September 1844 - 1892) was an American soldier. She is the first African-American female to enlist, and the only documented to serve in the United States Army posing as a man, under the pseudonym William Cathay. Williams was born in Independence, Missouri to a free man of color and a woman in bondage, making her legal status also that of a slave. During her adolescence, Williams worked as a house servant on the Johnson plantation on the outskirts of Jefferson City, Missouri. In 1861 Union forces occupied Jefferson City in the early stages of the American Civil War. At that time, captured slaves were officially designated by the Union as "contraband," and many were forced to serve in military support roles such as cooks, laundresses, or nurses. At age seventeen, Williams was impressed into serving the 8th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment, commanded by Colonel William Plummer Benton. For the next few years, Williams travelled with the 8th Indiana, accompanying the sol ...

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri governors could not restrict money from public schools under legislation endorsed by the state Senate. Senators voted Monday to give first-round approval to a proposed constitutional amendment that would prevent the governor from freezing money budgeted for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Sponsoring Sen. Ryan Silvey, a Kansas City Republican, says the change would mirror another constitutional provision that prevents the governor from using a line-item veto for "free public schools" or payment of debt. The constitution allows governors to control the rate of spending and to withhold funds if revenues aren't performing at the projected levels. The measure needs another vote before moving to the House and would need to be approved by Missouri voters this year. --- Missouri Budget is SJR 45

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A federal proposal to clean up the smoke wafting from wood-burning stoves has sparked a backlash from some rural residents, lawmakers and manufacturers who fear it could close the damper on one of the oldest ways of warming homes on cold winter days. Proposed regulations from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would significantly reduce the amount of particle pollution allowed from the smokestacks of new residential wood-powered heaters. Wood-burning stoves are a staple in rural homes in many states, a cheap heating source for low-income residents and others wanting to lessen their reliance on gas or electric furnaces. Outdoor models often cost several thousand dollars, but indoor stoves can cost as little as a few hundred dollars and sometimes double as fashionable centerpieces in homes. Some manufacturers contend the EPA's proposed standards are so stringent that the higher production costs would either force them out of business or raise prices so high that many consu ...

Dear colleagues and friends: Michelle Ridlen—with support from Dr. Kathy Unrath—has written the following letter advocating Mizzou’s undergraduate Art Education program. Please adopt, adapt, and dispense as you see fit. Suggested addresses are listed at the bottom of the letter. We sincerely thank you for your continued support! We urge the University of Missouri College of Education to reconsider its decision to suspend the undergraduate Art Education program by immediately reinstating it for future MU students. The program’s enrollment rise and its trajectory are both positive. The Art Education enrollment numbers given in the email communication to COE students and faculty on February 24th did not provide an accurate account of the total number of certified art teachers graduating each year. Administrators excluded middle school majors with an art K-9 certification endorsement, dual majors (BFA and BSEd in Art Education), and a vibrant pool of post-baccalaureate masters with certification stud ...

Our African American of the Day is not a person. But of something I just ran across in my research of Black History. It is a book that was started by Victor H. Green entitled "The *** Motorist Greenbook." Read below to find out what it is. How Did Blacks Travel During Segregation? The *** Motorist Green Book was helpful for navigating Jim Crow America. -- In 1936 a Harlem postal worker and activist named Victor H. Green decided to develop a guide that would help African Americans travel throughout the country in a safe and comfortable manner. The *** Motorist Green Book (also called The *** Travelers' Green Book), often simply known as The Green Book, identified places that welcomed black people during an era when Jim Crow laws and de facto segregation made it difficult for them to travel domestically without fear of racial backlash. The Green Book listed businesses and places of interest such as nightclubs, beauty salons, barbershops, gas stations and garages that catered to black road-tripper ...

It will most likely be at Sk8 Zone and will probably be from 5-9pm. They are expecting two hours of scrimmages. More details should come in a week or so, but please save the date. The G-Baby team placed 2nd in the F2 Class and top 20 overall at Motorsport Ranch Houston. Three of the ladies handled this event, Nicole Ayers - Jefferson City MO, Daisy DeSimone - Lewisville TX, and Theressa Riggs - Houston TX. The ladies each had personal goals for this event and all three exceeded their and the teams expectations! Nicole took the G-Baby SV650 to the grid and as usual got her normal great start. This was Nicole's first time at the Houston facility and her goal was to get the team in a good start position and get her times down as fast as possible. With only two practice sessions, she immediately started to drop her lap times and get in the groove of the race while holding G-Baby in the top 3 position. G-Baby moved into 2nd place towards the end of her 60 minute ride and never gave it back. After a 16 second pit stop for fuel and rider change, Daisy took control. Daisy ...

Please write or call your MO state legislator today! Jim ;-) Constitutional amendment approval would means politics back in Missouri conservation — GUEST OPINION — By Kenneth L. Kieser “An expert is someone who knows some of the worst mistakes that can be made in his subject, and how to avoid them.” Werner Heisenberg, Physics and Beyond Kenneth L. Kieser Kenneth L. Kieser I am not a political activist. However, I have never been shy of writing or speaking my opinion when a bill or legislation concerns conservation or hunting and fishing, especially in Missouri. There currently is a proposed constitutional amendment working its way through the State Capitol that would completely change the way conservation is regulated in Missouri. If approved by voters, SJR42 (Senator Schmitt from Kirkwood) and HJR57 (Representative Barnes from Jefferson City) would create a permanent Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, meaning, the General Assembly would govern conservation. I have traveled the entire Unite ...

I used to be a supporter of this group until they sold out the highest bidder with the deepest pockets...we all know who that is. Last year I saw their new head man lie in an ag committee meeting Jefferson City. To the residents of Missouri actively working to reform our laws including the crutch represented by breed specific legislation...the legislation is easy compared to the animal rights groups. Beware of these people...they are dangerous on levels you can't even imagine!

BB Pistol On Bus (Feb. 24, 2014) A Thomas Jefferson Middle School 8th grade student was taken into custody by the Jefferson City Police this afternoon after he was found in possession of a BB pistol on Bus All students on the bus are safe. The student had the pistol on the bus and was showing it to other students. The bus driver was told by at least one bus rider that a student had the pistol and the driver contacted First Student Transportation and the police were called. The bus stopped near Tom Lee Drive and students were asked to exit the bus and the police were able to ascertain which student had the weapon. The matter is still under investigation, but we wanted families to know of the situation. This is a serious reminder that parents and schools must work together to help children understand the ramifications of bringing any kind of weapon, even a toy, on to school grounds.

I met my Jr. High & High School friend and brother Eagle Scout, Art Hogan this past Sunday who I have not seen in 50 years! After having a wonderful afternoon and evening reminiscing I thought I would post a copy of the newspaper article that honored all of us when we received our Eagle Scout Awards. All at the same time (Scout Sunday 1962) and in the same troop (Troop 2, in Jefferson City, MO). FYI, the Merit Badge Sash (which has every Merit Badge one could have earned at that time) belonged to our Mentor, Mr Paul Doll (not pictured), a distinguished Eagle Scout himself. I will put our a request that if any of my or Art's friends know any of the other individuals in the photo and how to get in touch with them, please let us know. We have lost a couple but would like to get back together with those remaining. They are a great bunch of guys.

Tomorrow is a very special day for me. I will be addressing the business studies classes at Lincoln University, right here in my adopted home town, Jefferson City Missouri. The school was founded on the heels of the Civil War as Lincoln Institute in 1866 by veterans of the 62nd and 65th Regiments United States Colored Troops (USCT) Infantry. My sister Kimberly is a graduate of Lincoln in Criminal Justice and my beautiful daughter Ivana attends Lincoln. The founding of this wonderful place of higher learning, is the perfect example of the power of Vision, grit, planning and determination. Wish me luck. Ivan

Dear Jimmy Fallon, or anyone who knows how to get a hold of him: Please come to the Diocese of Jefferson City to any church in the diocese and feel most welcome. I've celebrated mass in every one of our churches more than once and in no church in this diocese do we held hands all during mass. There are no beach balls, no lighters, and there is sacred music. For those who agree with Jimmy for why he left the church, come to one of our Catholic Masses here. They're pretty much what Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict, Pope Francis and all those who carry on the Sacred Tradition expect! (I'm serious, I want Jimmy and all others to return to the sacraments. I pray for their return before each mass.)
Meanwhile, in Jefferson City... Missouri's proposed budget includes billions of dollars for schools, millions more for scholarships and $8 for tin foil hats. The $8 appropriation recommended Wednesday by a House education funding panel is only partly a joke. It's meant to make a point that some lawmakers aren't too pleased by what they consider to be paranoia about new Common Core standards for public schools. The tin foil amendment was put forth by committee chairman Rep. Mike Lair, a Republican from Chillicothe who is a retired teacher. —Associated Press

Pups, DDs, and PDDs, you might be interested in this meet-and-greet event with the "Saluting Marine" at the American Legion Post 5 in Jefferson City this coming Sunday. Some background: There’s an annual event in Washington, DC called Rolling Thunder Sunday, during which thousands of veterans ride their motorcycles to the Vietnam Memorial. It’s an incredible display of patriotism and comradeship — the kind of thing you’d expect from guys who were willing to risk their lives for the rest of us. For the last few years, one Marine has stood at attention in the middle of the street in full dress uniform, holding a continuous, unbroken salute for every biker in the procession. His remarkable exhibition of strength and dedication lasts more than four hours. That Marine, the Saluting Marine, is retired Staff Sergeant Tim Chambers. Marine Chambers decided he wanted to do something to show all the other vets how much he cared, so he spontaneously stepped into the road to salute to the riders. That first sa ...

Today’s Black History Fact is for my independent ladies! And if you are ever in Houston Texas, check out the Buffalo Soldiers Museum, Cathay is there she is the Only Known Female Buffalo Soldier — FROM HER HUMBLE start in Missouri, Cathay Williams made her way into the record books of military history as the only known and documented female buffalo soldier. Williams was born a slave in Jackson County and moved to Jefferson City with her family and master as a small child. In 1862, as the Union soldiers moved through Jefferson City, several slaves, including Williams, were confiscated by the 8th Indiana Infantry as ”contraband“ and taken to Arkansas. While with the 8th Indiana Infantry, she worked as a cook and laundress. After the war was over, Williams found work as a cook at Jefferson Barracks near St. Louis. Not long after this, she decided she was going to join the army so that she could make her own way and not be dependent on others. On Nov. 15, 1866, she enlisted in the 38th Infantry, Compa ...

What a weekend! My niece, gave my sisters and I tickets to Mamma Mia at the Fox. Carol had comp rooms at Hollywood Casino. All of us came home "ahead" from the casino the other two much better than me. Shopping today at Chesterfield Mall. Driving home on very very slick roads--15 cars in the median or ditch (10 between Linn to Jefferson City) and then another on 94. Driving was stressful but we made it and even laughed several times on the way home. Thank you, Jessie, for the tickets. Thank you, Carol, for the comp room. Thank you, Sheila, for buying breakfast. Most of all, Thank you, Jesus, for watching over us!
I understand the concerns of the Eminence Trails that may be closed by the US Forest Service. I don't have the full story and I will try to keep my personal political opinions out of this. However, since I have worked for the Federal government in a former career, I am aware of how much influence state government opinions will weigh in on this very subject. I can add the website information, but the best method is still phone calls and letters to let the State of Missouri know how much you all feel about this subject and the economic impact on the tourism of Missouri: Mailing Address Office of Governor Jay Nixon P.O. Box 720 Jefferson City, MO 65102 Phone: (573) 751-3222 For those of you who only have time for an email, please feel free to add that, too:

SO PROUD of our Missouri Mom Melissa who went to Jefferson City to speak against SB613, which would lower the concealed carry age to 19. The bill's author, Sen. Brian Nieves (R-Washington) was caught putting his foot in his mouth when he said: "We all know teenagers are stupid. We are not arguing whether teenagers are stupid." At the end of this video, around 4:20, Melissa can respond to his statement and says: " When you said that teenagers were stupid, we all laughed. Because we have them, or we know them or we were one. Why would we put a loaded weapon in their hands?" Nieves replies: "True. And you know the rule that I said before is you can't ask questions of the jury….Sure, I won't deny that's a valid point….."
This could easily be Boston=Jefferson City!! Have you ever tried to find a stretch of road that is straight and either NS or EW?!?! Almost impossible! Do you realize that our beautiful little city has streets that change names...for no apparent reason! You go through an intersection & boom, it's a new name! Eastland to Seven Hills to Ellis to Southwest Blvd!!! Why? Industrial to Truman to Country Club... Why?!?!?! Lol! Also, we LOVE to have the same street name with every kind of title; Fox trail, Fox Court, Fox Lane, Fox Drive... Why?!?! Our law enforcement, postal workers & delivery folks deserve hardship bonuses! And city planning & code... Lord, don't get me started! Ah well, we were voted prettiest, and my girls tell me it doesn't matter if you're a big ole mess, as long as you're cute!!
This Saturday, Feb 1, the Jefferson City Disc Golf Club, JCDGC, is hosting an Ice Bowl to benefit the Samaritan Center. Even if you don't play disc golf, you are welcome and encouraged to drop by Binder Lake to make a donation of cash or canned good and non-perishable food items. Last year, Jefferson City ranked in the top 20 cities in the nation in regards to pounds of food and amount of money raised. They beat out BIG cities like Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The members of the JCDGC work really hard to make this tournament a blessing for the Samaritan Center and we could REALLY use your help this year! Someone will be at the concession building near the ball fields. Drop by!

I had the privilege of emcee-ing the 2014 Missouri Governor's Student Leadership Forum last week. This forum on leadership started 27 years ago by Gov. John Ashcroft and has continued to this day every year. The Governor invites students from every campus in Missouri to come to Jefferson City to discuss faith and values using the person of Jesus as the example of servant leadership. I'm so proud to be a part of the planning committee and to be involved with these students lives.

Today in OUR Sstory - January 9 * "1866 - Fisk College is established in Nashville, Tennessee. Rust College is established in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Lincoln University is established in Jefferson City, Missouri. 1901 - Edward Mitchell Bannister joins the ancestors in Providence, Rhode Island. Challenged to become an artist after reading a newspaper article deriding African Americans' ability to produce art, he disproved that statement throughout a distinguished art career. 1906 - Poet and author, Paul Laurence Dunbar, joins the ancestors after succumbing to tuberculosis. Dunbar was so talented and versatile that he succeeded in two worlds. He was so adept at writing verse in Black English that he became known as the "poet of his people," while also cultivating a white audience that appreciated the brilliance and value of his work. "Majors and Minors" (1895), Dunbar's second collection of verse, was a remarkable work containing some of his best poems in both Black and standard English. When the cou .. ...
