MLB: Rays spring training Seeds of offense take root By LAURA MYERS SunCoast Sports PORT CHARLOTTE — For a little bit of fun competition this spring, Tampa Bay established a “coach of the day” award, with the winning coach’s photo hung in the locker room for players and coaches to see (and sometimes draw mustaches on). It’s hard to imagine, with the Rays turning in pitching gem after pitching gem, the headshot of anyone but Jim Hickey hanging from the clubhouse bulletin board. So far, though, it is the hitting coaches who have won out — Derek Shelton twice, Jamie Nelson once. Halfway through spring training, Rays manager Joe Maddon has seen plenty of encouraging signs from his players at the plate, which he said is a result of focusing on the fundamentals of hitting. “We’ve always been preaching it; we do it every year,” Maddon said. “It’s like, when the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” The Rays struggled at the plate last season, with just one player, Jeff Keppinger fin ...
There isn't much to report on the White Sox so lets get them finished. They did lose Kevin Youkilis and Orlando Hudson which will hurt them a little. But the lineup has stayed the same. What will hurt them is if Gordon Beckham doesn't produce there isn't a back-up. Alex Rios, Alejandro De Aza and Dayan Viciedo will be the starters with Dewayne Wise the spot fill. Infield will consist of Alexei Ramirez, Jeff Keppinger, Paul Konerko and Beckham. Tyler Flowers will catch Chris Sale, Jake Peavy, John Danks, Gavin Floyd and Jose Quintana. Addison Reed will close with set up of Matt Thornton and Jesse Crain. Fact Jake Peavy and Zach Greinke numbers are very close yet they are viewed on different levels. Guess what they are on the same level. Adam Dunn is the DH regardless. They will probably be behind the Tigers but the Indians might put up a fight.

As I predicted over a week ago, Kevin Youkilis is set to be a Yankee. After losing out on Jeff Keppinger and Eric Chavez, the Yanks were running out of options at third. Youk gets $12 million and year to prove that he's worth another multi-year pact next winter. This is going to be really weird for Red Sox fans. Youk and the Yanks will first arrive at Fenway on July 19th. Brace yourselves, Sox fans.

Here's the poop so far today (and given the current offseason, that's a pretty accurate term.) Yanks have offered Youkilis one-year, $12 million. A couple other teams are in the mix with two-year contracts ranging from $16-$18 million. I guess it's a question of money or years for Youk. Or maybe location since it's not clear who else is in the bidding, although Cleveland has been rumored. You might have heard the sign of relief when the Cubs signed Nate Schierholtz. The bad news is that it was only a one-year deal (for $2.25 million), so we might be going through this again next year. Jack Curry reports that the Yankees never even made an offer to Jeff Keppinger or Eric Chavez. Idiotic. Not Jack...that would be the Yankees. Reportedly, the Yankees are in talks with the Phillies about them taking Granderson off the Yankees' hands. No word on who's coming back, but I'm hoping Domonic Brown's name is in the mix. There's really nobody else on the Phillies I'd be interested in AND that are realistic. ...
***READ THIS*** All the Cubs have been able to do so far regarding their vacancy at third base is cross potential free agents off the list. The answer, though, may be shortstop Starlin Castro. On Wednesday, the White Sox snatched free agent Jeff Keppinger, signing him to a three-year contract reportedly worth $12 million. The D-backs tagged Eric Chavez, giving him a one-year, $3 million deal. The Cubs did consider both, and were more interested in Keppinger, even though he sustained a broken leg this offseason. "It's a supercharged market in a lot of different areas," Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said Wednesday, the third day of the Winter Meetings. "We're still on the lookout. We have a number of irons in the fire as far as third base. We're confident we'll land someone we feel good about. It certainly is a position of scarcity." Which brings us back to Castro. A two-time All-Star, the shortstop has a .297 batting average after three seasons. He led the National League in hits in 2011. He'll turn 23 in ...
Day three a the Winter Meetings: The Marlins trade Yunel Escobar to the Rays for yet another minor leaguer, the Yankees miss out on third base as Jeff Keppinger signs with White Sox and Eric Chavez leaves to go to the D-Backs. Will Youk end up in pinstripes?

REPORT: White Sox have signed infielder Jeff Keppinger to a three-year deal worth $12M:
I was just watching SportsCenter and saw that they mentioned the White Sox signing of Jeff Keppinger. Read that again. SPORTSCENTER mentioned THE White Sox.
Eric Chavez (Diamondbacks), Randy Choate (Cardinals) and Sean Burnett (Angels) all have signed contracts today. Chavez's signing, paired with Jeff Keppinger, leave the New York Yankees with fewer options to fill in at 3B while Alex Rodriguez recovers from hip surgery (once again, his fault).
With reports showing Eric Chavez and Jeff Keppinger signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago White Sox respectively, does that mean Eduardo Nunez will take over third base on the opening day? Or will Yankees GM Brian Cashman make another move?
According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, the Yankees bid higher than the White Sox for Jeff Keppinger, but the utility infielder chose Chicago.
Personal trade conspiracy theory hypothetical: The Rangers trade Michael Young to the New York Yankees. I haven't heard this anywhere, but the Yankees are without A-Rod until the summer, and were attempting to sign Jeff Keppinger and Eric Chavez to platoon at 3B. Turns out, neither Keppinger and Chavez wanted to play with the Yankees, and signed elsewhere (I love it when the Yankees get spurned). So, the Yankees are without a 3B and the market is very small at this point. After Young turned in what was one of the worst seasons from a regular this year at the plate, and is a poor defender, and with Mike Olt coming up, it's becoming less likely Young will get playing time (particularly in the field). The Yankees need a 3B and a UTIL man when A-Rod gets back. They also have plenty of money. Young would fit their scheme perfectly, and they would have to give up very little if they take most or all of his contract. Young has 10-5 trade veto rights, but would he block a trade to the Yankees? Doubtful. 1) He'd g ...

Transactions and Rumors within the last hour: The Diamondbacks signed OF Eric Hinske to a one-year deal. The Mariners are "pretty close" to signing free agent OF Jason Bay. The Yankees have a very strong interest in utility INF Jeff Keppinger. The Diamondbacks are discussing trades involving OF Jason Kubel. Some think a Kubel trade could happen today.
Nelson is a good, low cost option for the Yankees until Rodriguez returns. Eric Chavez & Jeff Keppinger are fits as well.
Yankees possibilities for 3B: Chavez, Nunez Nix, Jeff Keppinger, Brandon Inge, or Placido Polanco, not a very good class their. I would prefer Chavez
Jeff Keppinger can be an extremely valuable bench player or a decent second-division starter. FA Preview:
The latest New York Yankees' rumors include discussion of a possible trade for Giancarlo Stanton, and interest in free agents Russell Martin and Jeff Keppinger.
Reds nearing deal with former Giants infielder Emmanuel Burriss? why not just look at Jeff Keppinger?
Bryan LaHair would have been a great backup plan for the if they couldn't re-sign Jeff Keppinger.
Jeff Keppinger and Reed Johnson do that also. Johnson also fields better in the OF than Gomes, FWIW.

Diamondbacks Notes: Keppinger, Peralta, Fujikawa By Mark Polishuk [November 20 at 8:23pm CST] Here's the latest out of Arizona... The D'Backs are interested in free agent infielder Jeff Keppinger, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Keppinger hit .325/.367/.439 in 418 plate appearances with the Rays in 2012 and has a career .864 OPS against left-handed pitching. Arizona would presumably use Keppinger at third base, though the veteran has played all over the infield in his career. In another post from Piecoro, he says the Diamondbacks would use Jhonny Peralta as a third baseman if they acquired him from the Tigers. Peralta primarily served as the Indians' third baseman in 2009 and 2010, though he hasn't played at the hot corner since and has a below-average (a -3.1 UZR/150) glove at the position. While the D'Backs were one of the teams who met with free agent closer Kyuji Fujikawa, the Snakes don't "appear to be as interested" in Fujikawa as they were before acquiring Heath Bell from the Marli .. ...
Dbacks are also interested in IF Jeff Keppinger. says the Dbacks would use him at 3B.
are interested in free agent infielder Jeff Keppinger.
I really don't like Jeff Keppinger (as a baseball player) for reasons I can't quite explain.
I think Ichiro is in the mix to come back. Also think they will take a hard look at Jeff Keppinger. Will also need to sign a C.
Have you heard the Dbacks having any interest in either Cabrera (Indians) and/or Jeff Keppinger?
Does this trade open up the doors for Jeff Keppinger signing w/the Dbacks?
Well, the Dbacks have just acquired their LHR specialist for Ryan Wheeler, also paves the way for Jeff Keppinger to be signed.
Jeff Keppinger's name on contract would be nice entree
Jeff keppinger would be a perfect fit for the birds. Can play almost every position and hit anywhere in the lineup.
looking at some free agent splits-Jeff Keppinger would be a ridiculously good platoon mate with Lind. He crushes LHP every yr
Jeff Keppinger linked to the Dbacks? Honestly, not too much of an upgrade over Chris Johnson.

Arizona is currently looking for infield help. Reports suggest they have interest in Jeff Keppinger (3B) and Japanese SS Hiroyuki Nakajima.
Dbacks interested in Jeff Keppinger? I wish the were. Good utility infielder and contact hitter.
Mike, what do you think about getting Jeff Keppinger to be the right-handed half of the DH platoon with Lind + infield depth?
would the Reds ever consider looking at bringing back Jeff Keppinger? He had solid year last yr.
Mark this down, BEST VALUE FA deals this year will be Juan and any team that signs Jeff
41. Jeff Keppinger - Orioles. Keppinger was non-tendered by the Giants a year ago, but the high-contact infielder bounced back to hit .325/.367/.439 for the Rays in 418 plate appearances. Obviously that production is unsustainable, but it might net the 32-year-old a multiyear deal or a starting gig. The Orioles are one possibility, though they do have internal options at second base. 42. Mike Adams - Phillies. The Phillies probably cannot afford all the players I've picked for them, but on an individual level Adams makes sense. The 34-year-old has been a dominant setup man, though he had surgery for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome this month. Adams expects to be 100% by Spring Training, though there is some risk he won't be. My 2013 -- trade Rasmus, Lind and Izturis to Mets for R.A. Dickey. Then add Jeff Keppinger for 2B. Molitor as Manager.
How about Jeff Keppinger and Jeff Niemann? Scary that they're even on the same team.
i seem to like the off seasons in sports as much as the actual season. yes, i understand that i have a problem. anyway, glad we kept affeldt in the 'pen. hope we make a run at keeping pagan and scutaro. a few names not linked to the giants i wouldn't mind seeing in the black and orange next year: OF Justin Upton, LHP francisco liriano (again), 2B jeff keppinger (again) (if we don't resign scutaro). now a few of questions to throw out: if pagan goes elsewhere, would a platoon of blanco and torres (FA) work for sf? can wilson work himself back into shape it the 'pen was committee-like for the start of the year? would freddy sanchez sign as a PH/bench INF on the cheap?
I think if I could construct my ideal bench, it would include Jeff Keppinger and Alex Gonzalez. Probably too expensive for reality.
Reason I should never be allowed in the BBWAA: I would have voted for Jeff Keppinger.
Why the Yankees need a Jeff Keppinger? A-Rod, Jeter can't play in the field every day and they need a reliable infielder who can hit.
Here's a player who the Yankees should strongly pursue. Jeff Keppinger.
Cubs should pick up Brandon McCarthy, Oliver Perez, and Jeff Keppinger.
I know this isn't a flashy name, but any thoughts on the signing Jeff Keppinger? Versatile guy who can hit lefties...
"One option [for the Giants], Jeff Keppinger, is a Scutaro-like player in that he makes lots of conta--" CREDIBILITY BLOWN.
and if anyone is keeping score, free agents A's should look at: Adam LaRoche, Travis Ishikawa, Carlos Pena, Jason Bartlett, and Jeff Keppinger... just FYI.. all you guys saying I'm a Giants a fan.. ppsshh :)
Kelly Johnson, Marco Scutaro, Jeff Keppinger. All affordable if you didn't lose all your money derping around trying to steal
It's officially the offseason, and this should be a quiet one in St. Louis. There aren't many needs that the Cardinals have. Every team could improve some, so here is my wishlist: Upgrades up the middle. I'd like to see a long-term SS, and Furcal slide over to 2B, but I'd gladly settle for short-term fixes as well, as long as I'm not stuck watching a combination of Descalso and Kozma again. Elvis Andrus probably costs too much and Starlin Castro may or not be available, so we are likely looking at short-term fixes such as Stephen Drew, J.J. Hardy, Marco Scutaro, or Jeff Keppinger, to name a few. We desperately need a left-handed reliever. It's about time we invested in that position. This is our only pitching need. We have 8 potential starters and several solid right-handed relievers. We also need to spice up the bench. The only legit bench bat we have is Matt Carpenter. Oscar Tavares could win a spot, but I'd rather see him play everyday, and we have 3 good outfielders. Matt Adams is a legit bat, but he ...
Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch opines that Cardinals' GM John Mozeliak could look to overpay a veteran on a one-year contract to shore up second base and shortstop, spots currently occupied by Daniel Descalso and Rafael Furcal or Pete Kozma. Stephen Drew, Alex Gonzalez, Jeff Keppinger and Marco Scutaro are the four middle infielders Strauss names, and of the bunch it stands to reason that both Drew and Scutaro are going to command multi-year deals.
So it is Orioles baseball season all year round in my head. I was just reading an article for possible moves this offseason and I like the moves that are predicted. Reynolds is going to test the market and probably get another suitor. Nick Swisher is 31 and can have maybe an offer for a 4 or 5 year contract for $80-100m. He would do very well in the lineup and covering 1st base. I personally don't see Roberts being himself next season and I do think there is a possibility of him not making it back to 2nd base. Jeff Keppinger is a bargain to fill 2nd base and a good addition to the lineup. Let's hope they will solidify the pitching rotation.
Giants free agent list: Aubrey Huff (10 million dollar team option to bring him back or 2 million dollars to buy him out. Sorry Huff, you're one guy on this team who has to go and not come back.) Marco Scutaro (Obviously would love to have him back, but let's not get crazy in overpaying for a 37 year old having a career year. If for some reason he's not back, bring in Jeff Keppinger. He is a VERY similar type of player.) Freddy Sanchez (Sorry bud, you're damaged goods. Time for this relationship to end.) Ryan Theriot (Nice guy to have coming off the bench. If we can bring him back in a similar type of role he had when Scutaro was brought in, do it. He shouldn't cost too much) Melky Cabrera (It's funny because I wouldn't mind having him back if he'd come back cheap wanting to redeem himself, but my guess is Sabean won't entertain the idea of bringing him back. I see him going elsewhere.) Angel Pagan (Want him back. Hopefully it won't get to where the cost would be severely overpaying to do so.) Xavier Nady ...
Do you see Braves showing any interest in Keppinger?

I believe that would be Jeff Keppinger.
The Rays had another great year, one of 3 teams to have 90+ wins 3 yrs in a row...but free agency could be a killer to a core group responsible for the success. They need bats! The pitching is great, but we will see.here's how it looks. RHP James Shields ($9 million club option), RHP Fernando Rodney ($2.5 million club option), DH Luke Scott ($6 million club option), C Jose Molina ($1.8 million club option), CF B.J. Upton, 1B Carlos Pena, LHP J.P. Howell, RHP Kyle Farnsworth, RHP Joel Peralta and INF Jeff Keppinger.
Well, Char Porterfield, Sharon O'Connor Townsend, Dean Taylor, & all other Rays fans we may lose K. Farnsworth, J. Peralta, James Shields, Jeff Keppinger, & B J Upton to contract expiration but I'll still be in the stands next year. They have the pitching power--- now we need to add hitting to go w/ Longoria, Zobrest, Jennings and Joyce. Since the Rays are out I hope that Tex. wins but they are looking sick. Enjoy the World Series.

The Rays came out hitting and man did they need that as well as capitalizing too scoring a lot of runs. In the game tonight, had Chris Archer on the mound facing Daisuke Matsuzaka and you think, maybe maybe just maybe. Did not start off pretty as it was see saw battle but the Rays kept it close. Down 3-2 in the fourth inning, a leadoff home run by Jeff Keppinger made it a tie ball game, next batter gets on with a single then on the first pitch, Carlos Pena hits a two run homer to take a 5-3 lead. When the sixth came around, everyone contributed as they batted around and the score became 12-3. They were not done as they added on one more the eighth and the final score was 13-3 RAYS WIN! Archer went five strong innings and the bullpen came in and shutdown the rest of the Red Sox lineup, already mentioned the offense, defense was great too, and hopefully this will get the Rays moving back in the right direction. Hellickson goes 7 innings, Rays beats Royals ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Jeremy Hellickson pitched seven strong innings for his first home win in three months and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on Monday night. Hellickson (8-8) allowed one run and six hits in ending a stretch of seven consecutive home winless starts, dating back to a 2-1 victory over Boston on May 16. Tampa Bay was coming off an 8-2 road trip that concluded with a four-game sweep over the Los Angeles Angels. The Rays went ahead 4-1 in the fourth on Jose Labaton's RBI single and a run-scoring double from Desmond Jennings off Will Smith (4-5). Hellickson worked out of a two-on, no-out jam in the sixth. The right-hander appeared to have induced a double-play grounder from Billy Butler, but second baseman Ryan Roberts throw after recording an out at second looked like it broke through the webbing on first baseman Jeff Keppinger's glove and wound up behind the bag. Unfazed, Hellickson then got an inning-ending double-play ...

Felix Hernandez throws perfect game, overpowers Rays Associated Press SEATTLE -- King Felix now has a crowning achievement. Felix Hernandez pitched the Seattle Mariners' first perfect game and the 23rd in baseball history, overpowering the Tampa Bay Rays in a brilliant 1-0 victory Wednesday. The 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner has long talked of his desire to achieve pitching perfection. He finally accomplished it against the Rays, striking out the side twice and finishing with 12 strikeouts. It was the third perfect game in baseball this season -- a first -- joining gems by Chicago's Philip Humber against the Mariners in April and San Francisco's Matt Cain versus Houston in June. More than half of all perfectos -- 12 -- have come in the last 25 seasons. This also was the sixth no-hitter in the majors this season, three of them at Safeco Field. Humber threw his gem in Seattle, then six Mariners pitchers combined to hold the Los Angeles Dodgers hitless at the park on June 8. For the Rays, it was an all-too-f ...
