Chicago turns “the Ol’ Pisspot” into a watery urban playground By Lori Rotenberk Monte Gerlach The evolution of the Chicago River from “the Stinky,” as it was once called, to the city’s second watery playground, has the makings of a rags-to-riches story. The river, like those in most American metropolises, long served as an industrial transport system. At the turn of the last century, it was re-engineered to flow backwards to prevent bacteria and pollutants from flowing into Lake Michigan. Margaret Frisbie, executive director of the environmental nonprofit Friends of the Chicago River, says it became “a back alleyway filled with sewage and trash.” In the heat of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, even the flames, perhaps wary of its murky waters, jumped the river twice. But this weekend, a striking new boathouse opens on the river’s banks. Designed by noted Chicago architect Jeanne Gang, the Clark Park Boathouse will help put more kayakers and canoers on the river that was paddled by early ...

Corps Approves Plan to Turn Chicago's Northerly Island Into Urban Park 08/16/2012 Chicago Tribune Text size: AA By Naomi Nix, Tribune reporter Two years ago, city planners unveiled an ambitious plan to turn the flat grassy turf of Northerly Island into an urban park designed for adventure and discovery in the natural world. Now ecologists at the Army Corps of Engineers have the green light to begin the first phase: reshaping the southern end of the 91-acre man-made peninsula into an ecologically diverse habitat for land and water critters native to Chicago. "To me it's like a picture of what the city was like before the city was built," said Jeanne Gang, an architect of the Park District's long-term plan for the peninsula. "As the city sprawls bigger and bigger ... it's going to be really important for inner-city people and youth to be able to access a natural place." On that note, the Park District also plans to announce Thursday an expansion of camping opportunities at the park for kids and families sta ...
