Jawaharlal Nehru

Jawaharlal Nehru (‎ 14 November 1889 – 27 May 1964), often referred to with the epithet of Panditji, was an Indian lawyer, politician and statesman who became the first Prime Minister of independent India (1947–64) and became noted for his “neutralist” policies in foreign affairs.

NEHRU’S PACIFISM HAD NEARLY COST US TAWANG Claude Arpi | It is entirely due to Major Bob Khathing's courage and swift action, backed by the Assam Governor, that Tawang is part of India. Had Jawaharlal Nehru had his way, it would have been Chinese territory today While the legacy of Jawaharlal Nehru is being discussed by ‘eminent’ personalities at the Nehru International Conference, organised by the Indian National Congress to commemorate Nehru’s 125th birth anniversary, it is perhaps time to stop using the usual clichés about the first Prime Minister’s 17 years at India’s helm. By the way, I seriously doubt if many of the invitees of the conference have read any of the 58 volumes of Nehru’s Selected Works. During the recent months, many have questioned the audacity to compare Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to Nehru, but it is obvious that the Sardar would have been a far more decisive Prime Minister than the Pandit. Remember Kashmir. In a rare interview, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, who was Direc ...
The Salarjung Museum is the third largest museum in India housing the biggest one-man collections of antiques in the world. It is well known throughout India for its prized collections belonging to different civilizations dating back is very largest accocation to the 1st century. Nawab Mir Yusuf Ali Khan Salar Jung III (1889–1949), former Prime Minister of the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, spent a substantial amount of his income over thirty five years to make this priceless collection, his life's passion. The collections left behind in his ancestral palace, 'Diwan Deodi' were formerly exhibited there as a private museum which was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1951. Old timers believe that the present collection constitutes only half of the original art wealth collected by Salar Jung III. His employees siphoned off part of it, since Salar Jung was a bachelor and depended upon his staff to keep a vigil. Some more art pieces were lost or stolen during the shifting of the museum from Dewan Devdi to the ...
New Delhi, Dec 28: With an absolute majority for BJP and the image of a strong leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his PMO emerged the driving force of the new Government which critics have dubbed as centralisation of power. But for a “rank outsider” to Delhi’s charmed power circles, Modi made a quick transformation from being a Chief Minister to a Prime Minister who has apparently taken to foreign policy like fish to water. He engaged vigorously with world leaders including Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jingping and made a surprise invitation to SAARC leaders including Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for his swearing-in ceremony. But it is another story that by the year end, Indo-Pak relations remained in deep freeze after India called off foreign secretary-level talks over Pakistan High Commissioner engaging with Hurriyat leaders. The seven months of the new Government have presented a picture that everything about it is “PMO-centric” or “PMO- driven”, a marked difference ...

Gandhi-Nehru soft power not sole reason behind freedom - Maj Gen G.D. Bakshi (Retd) - Lets write correct history of India, however bitter it may be for any individual or political party. TRUTH must prevail ! - In strictly historical terms, Subhas Bose emerges as primarily responsible for Indian independence, even more perhaps than Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. Nation states are constructed around a core of seminal ideas and values. They need a national narrative to sustain themselves and serve as a basis for their collective identity that defines who they are and what they stand for. This national narrative is usually based upon the historical path of evolution of that state. The national narrative that the Indian state evolved for itself at the time of its independence, averred that unlike all other Westphalian states that are based upon a monopoly of violence and hard power, the Indian state was unique and exceptional. It was not based upon hard power, but on the soft power concepts of ahimsa, no ...

Today is the Birthday of the great soul, BHARAT RATAN "Shree Atal Bihari Vajpayee". Born on 25th December 1924, Atal Bihari Vajpayee had contributed a lot to India's Progress. I fear we could not describe a legend in this small space..! Will share few of his glimpses. In 1957; Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji was first elected to the Lok Sabha, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was so impressed by the oratorical skills of Vajpayee that the former commented to his fellow parliamentarians that this young MP would lead the nation one day. After 23 Years of active politics, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, along with many BJS and RSS colleagues, particularly his long-time and close friends Lal Krishna Advani and Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, founded the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1980.
To, The President of India Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi Phone No: 011-23015321 Subject: Memorandum for request to take action against RSS and allies due to its anti-national policies. Sir, With due respect, as citizens of India and as dutiful students to the sovereign state of India we are hereby submitting our demands for the protection of sovereignty of State: This is in view of the forceful conversions targeting minorities (particularly Muslims and Christians) throughout India and particularly the recent issues that came up in Agra and Aligarh conducted by RSS and its allied wings. The activities of the RSS and its allied wings are against the spirit of the constitution of India and against the ideals of the founders of India like Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi. While Mahatma Gandhi was against the forceful conversion of any person in independent India and believed it to be a nation of all its citizens irrespective of religion, Pt. Nehru clearly promoted Secularism. RSS wants India to be a Hi ...
God decided to encourage people to have fewer children and introduced an award scheme. During the procedure at one point, he concentrated on learning about the situation in India. 🇮🇳 He first met Jawaharlal Nehru in heaven, and asked him how many children he had during his time on earth. Nehru replied… only one! Happy with the good family planning adopted, God awarded Nehru with a Celestial Rolls Royce! 🚘 Indira Gandhi was next, and God asked the same question. She replied she had two children.👬 God thought, not too bad, so he gave her a BMW. Dr. Radhakrishnan was next in line. God was not pleased to hear that he had six children,👬👭 and gave him a Morris-8 as a kind of punishment. Sometime later, the three (Nehru, Indira and Radhakrishnan) going around in their new cars, saw Mahatma Gandhi on foot!!! Wondering what went wrong; they asked why God hadn't been merciful with him. The Mahatma replied in disgust... "God did not even ask me!!! Some *** told him that I am the Father of the N . ...

FATAL CHARM THAT HAS LEFT INDIA BLEEDING Wednesday, 03 December 2014 | Rajesh Singh | in Edit Most analysts will readily admit that Nehru blundered in taking the Kashmir dispute to the United Nations. Madhav Godbole’s new book speaks of the role Mountbatten played in setting Nehru on the wrong path Like Banquo’s ghost in Macbeth, the blunders of Jawaharlal Nehru over Jammu & Kashmir continue to return to haunt Nehruvians and others. In the midst of the much-hyped birth anniversary celebrations of the country’s first Prime Minister this year, a new book by former Union Home Secretary Madhav Godbole, which has elaborated on the issue, made a rather quiet arrival in the stores. Titled, The God Who Failed: An Assessment of Jawaharlal Nehru’s Leadership, it is a personal and historical critique of Nehru’s leadership. Before Nehru’s admirers and sundry like pounce on Mr Godbole for providing a ‘skewed’ account, it needs to be put on record that the author credits Nehru with being the ‘father o ...
My answer to Why did Jawaharlal Nehru drop all cases against Sheikh Abdullah suddenly in 1964?
Tampering with scientific temper Is scientific temper an attitude for both the public and the private domains or is it only for the public domain? Is it opposed to or can it coexist with superstition? These are questions India must debate In early November, the Prime Minister announced that an important initiative to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru was the “promotion of scientific temper among children”. Endorsing this view, a few days later, the Home Minister, who is also the convener of the committee tasked to organise the celebrations, lauded Nehru’s leadership role in promoting scientific temper and in establishing the institutions of science in the country. He described Nehru as a “Rashtra Purush,” high praise which the Sangh Parivar reserves for very few. The message from the two leaders is clear: India needs to invest in “scientific temper” especially among the young if we wish, as a nation, to be a proud participating member of the world of scientific knowle ...

To All Pakistanis and to all Kashmiris Many of the problems in our sub continent today are because we were befooled and taken for a ride by the Britishers by their wicked divide and rule policy, and the bogus, phony and fraudulent two nation theory, and making Hindus and Muslims think that they are enemies of one another, and must live separately. Many of our people of the previous generations were duped and emotionally carried away by this historical swindle, which led to the Partition of 1947, and the consequences, due to which we are suffering terribly even till this day. Unless we see through this gigantic fraud and reunite under a strong, secular, modern minded government which does not tolerate religious extremism, whether Hindu or Muslim, and crushes it with an iron hand, we will keep suffering. The truth is , as I have been repeatedly saying, that Pakistan is no country. It is a fake, artificial entity created by the British so that Hindus and Muslims keep fighting each other, and thus India ( of ...

As far as J&K is concerned, the Valley has benefited at the cost of Jammu & Ladakh. Kashmir though holds only 16% of the land mass and 52% of the total population of the state, it still enjoys lions share in the state administration and most of the chief ministers belong to the Valley only. The appeasement policy started by Jawaharlal Nehru still continues and nobody really cares about the people of Jammu and Ladakh region. Delhi took them for granted over the years and they remained neglected; but its time they get their due.

Why the Sangh Parivar loves to hate Nehru. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s implacable opposition to Jawaharlal Nehru springs from its contrasting worldviews, about which historians and political analysts have written extensively. Though emotions seldom constitute an analytical category in political commentaries, yet it won’t be wrong to say that envy and jealousy drive the Sangh’s antipathy to Nehru as much as ideological differences. All democracies have a multiplicity of ideologies. But rarely do you witness a political formation venting such passion against its opponent as the Sangh does against Nehru, even though five decades have passed since his death. You might think it is logical for the Sangh to detest and demolish Nehru in its attempt to turn to reality its vision of making India a Hindu nation. Political thinkers such as Samuel Huntington have said you cannot but hate what you do not want to become. But even such a flawed definition cannot explain the Sangh’s anger against the man lon ...

The tussle over Pandit Nehru's legacy, the slanging over him and Sardar Patel, the rush to declare India's first Prime Minister and one of its foremost freedom fighters a failure is ample evidence that writers need to rescue Indian history from its politicians. Novel, essay, biography, memoir - whatever it is that you do writer, dive into the trove of history and show us the men and women behind the historical figures, their joys and their foibles, what made them laugh and made them cry. On that note, Happy Children's Day India, and a very happy 125th birthday to Jawaharlal Nehru! If nothing else, India has at least learnt a new word today: sesquicentennial :)

‘Secular’ parties get invite to attend Congress conference on Nehru Leaders of “secular” opposition parties have received invitations from Congress president Sonia Gandhi to attend an international conference — “Nehru’s world view and his legacy: democracy, inclusion and empowerment” — here on Nov 17 and 18, invitees include the Janata Parivar members who are working towards a merger, the Left parties and breakaway factions of the Congress, the Trinamool Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party. Efforts are on to invite leaders of regional parties that do not have an overtly communal agenda as well. This list excludes parties such as the Shiv Sena and the Shiriomani Akali Dal. As the battle for the legacy of Jawaharlal Nehru hots up ahead of the 125th birth anniversary of the first Prime Minister on Friday, the Congress clearly intends to make the conference not just a show of strength for non-BJP forces but also a showcasing of an ideology that is at odds with the world view of the M ...

Panit Jwahara Lal Nehru was born on November 14. After his death in year 1963, his birthday has been celebrated as children's day. The reason of celebrating his birthday as children's day is because of his love and passion for children. Thats the reason he is also known as Chacha Nehru. Happy Children day In India, Children's day is celebrated on the 14th November every year. As a tribute Children's Day is celebrated on the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru's birthday. Lovingly called 'Chacha Nehru' which means Uncle Nehru by the kids, Jawaharlal Nehru gave emphasis to the significance of giving love and affection to children, who are the bright future of India. The main purpose of this day is to encourage the welfare of children all over the country. The first ever Children's day was celebrated in 1954. The idea of a universal Children's Day was suggested by Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon and it adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. At first it was celebrated universally in the month of October. After 1959, November 20th was chosen as Children's day as it marked the anniversary day when the Declaration of the Child Rights was adopted by the U.N. General Assembly. In 1989 the Convention on the Rights of the Child was also signed on the same date. However, in India, Pandit ...

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was nominated for nobel peace prize 11 times. Shows the kind of clout and respect that gentleman had. Sanghies like Swamy can continue to wonder how and why Nehru was unanimously chosen to be bestowed with a Bharat Ratna while sanghi demigods found no takers.
"You must have read many fairy tales and stories of long ago. But the world itself is the greatest fairy tale and story of adventure that was ever written. Only we must have eyes to see and ears to hear and a mind that opens out to the life and beauty of the world." - letter addressed in general to `dear children' by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1949, when he was India's Prime Minister.

Why do we celebrate Children's Day on the birth day of Jawaharlal Nehru? Can't we make it on the birth day of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first Minister of Education in Independent India? Or on the birth day of A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the epicentre for inspiration? .Is there any valid reason? Please help if anyone can.
A PhD student of Jawaharlal Nehru University has alleged that she was raped several times inside the campus (in her hostel room, obviously JNU allows boys in girls hostel) by a research scholar. Its unfortunate. Hope HRD minister and media is listening. Hope she considers this as an "insult to daughter". This is the third such incident reported from JNU this year.

To-day is Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru's 125th birthday. This day is observed as 'Children's Day' as sponsored by the Government right from the day when Nehru was alive. His specific contribution for the children is doubtful. But in order to deify himself he only proposed his birth day to be observed as 'Children's Day'. The Rashtrapati Bhawan and Teenmurty Bhawan are facing each other in New Delhi. After Nehru, Lal Bahadur Sashtri should have occupied the Teenmurty Bhawan as the earmarked official residence of the PM. But he was not allowed to do that by Congress sycophants. It was converted in to a library and museum dedicated to the dead PM. During Indira Gandhi's tenure as the PM, JNU was named after Nehru. There is no unanimity of opinion in support of such practice of personalizing institutional properties. Then Shantiban, the huge plot as memorial for Nehru, also was a wrong precedent followed by the rest as if the nation was the property of a particular family and its successive generations.
Remembering the Architect of modern India, visionary whose only religion was India and its people. Happy 125th Birthday our first PM. Nehru is main reason india is not pakistan today. The challenge to Nehru was to craft a nation at a time when Winston Churchill argued that India was not a country. "If british left churchil predicted India will fallback quite rapidly through the centuries into barbarism and privations of the middle ages" Jawaharlal nehru Nurtured India's multi party democracy, Created a Industrial base for the further economic development, religious and lingustic pluralism. It is worth stating in the context that the acceleration of growth achieved in the 1950s has not been exceeded since. Also, that India grew faster than China in the Nehru era. You don't achieve greatness by pulling down history's heroes. You stand or fall by your own deeds, Leaders cannot yet take on Gandhi so they are going after Nehru. Have heard stories about people who cried for days when Nehru died. Congress curre ...
It is a sheer coincidence that I got to flip some historical episodes of building India by our freedom fighters. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India had sky high ambitions for reforming India right after he took the charge from the British. In the first term of his government which was not an elected government, he did put up some very important bills and pursued those regardless of his political gains and losses. Dr. B R Ambedkar, with whom his relations where not that easy, also pursued the Hindu Code Bill which would holistically allow the women of India their due rights and freedom which were denied in the name of Hindu Sanskriti. Dr. B R Ambedkar even resigned for not being able to get the bill passed. Jawaharlal fought his first elections from Allahabad's Phulpur on the Hindu Code bill agenda despite facing a lot of opposition during his first tenure. He fought against some swami. He won and he did pass the Hindu code bill. Women having the right to marry again, one marriage at a tim ...

Hyderabad Deccan1948: India's hidden massacre youtube link : India was partitioned in 1947, about 500,000 people died in communal rioting, mainly along the borders with Pakistan. But a year later another massacre occurred in central India, which until now has remained clouded in secrecy. In September and October 1948, soon after independence from the British Empire, tens of thousands of people were brutally slaughtered in central India. Some were lined up and shot by Indian Army soldiers. Yet a government-commissioned report into what happened was never published and few in India know about the massacre. Critics have accused successive Indian governments of continuing a cover-up. The massacres took place a year after the violence of partition in what was then Hyderabad state, in the heart of India. It was one of 500 princely states that had enjoyed autonomy under British colonial rule. When independence came in 1947 nearly all of these states agreed to become part of India. But Hyderabad's Muslim Nizam, o ...

your views when Modi said "Jawaharlal Nehru was not present at the funeral of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel"?
In today's war of words between Congress and BJP we need to understand the truth of how Sardar was treated by Nehru and his cronies. That there was no love lost between Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel was evident from historical records and personal anecdotes. Compared to Sardar's towering personality, Nehru was a pygmy. Records show that the Sardar who was the then Deputy Prime Mnister and Home Minister was insulted, humiliated and disgraced by the then Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, during a Cabinet meeting. “You are a complete communalist and I’ll never be a party to your suggestions and proposals,” Nehru shouted at Patel during a crucial Cabinet meeting to discuss the liberation of Hyderabad by the Army from the tyranny of the Razakkars, the then Nizam’s private army. “A shocked Sardar Patel collected his papers from the table and slowly walked out of the Cabinet room. That was the last time Patel attended a Cabinet meeting. He also stopped speaking to Nehru since then,” writes ...

city is also known as the "City of Prime Ministers" because post independence 7 out of 13 Prime Ministers of India have belonged to Allahabad. Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Gulzarilal Nanda, Vishwanath Pratap Singh and Chandra Shekhar All these seven leaders were either born in Allahabad, were alumni of Allahabad University, or were elected from a constituency in Allahabad.
Champaka Raman Pillai – The forgotten freedom fighter Some years ago, I had introduced him in a blog ‘Emden and Pillai’. Then I alluded to him in the blog about ACN Nambiar. I think it will do justice to provide details on this gentleman from Trivandrum (I have heard many a Tamilian clamor – he is not a Malayali, he is Tamilian) , for he was at the forefront in the fight for Indian Independence, even before Gandhiji, NSC Bose and many other luminaries stepped in and wrote their names in the records of history. I don’t think many in Trivandrum or Kerala will recall this character, Oh! Forget it; most of India would not know the man behind the usage ‘Jai Hind’ that we hear uttered every now and then… But I still wonder, how would Hitler or Goebells or Himmler have addressed him? Herr Schampak, or Herr Pillai? Pillai as it turns out was a mysterious figure, flitting in and out of different accounts and locations, without being in any of them to the end. Here below I plan to record his known l ...

History and the nationalist project Oct 11, 2014 01:35 AM , By Subramanian Swamy | 117 comments FLAWED NARRATIVE: FLAWED NARRATIVE: What concerns Indian nationalists is that in spite of the application of science to questions of history, Nehruvian historians refuse to update materials that go into making history books It is good to see Digvijaya Singh of the Congress Party finding time from his life of leisure and party responsibilities to address ideological issues raised by me that arise from the task of re-writing our history text books and de-falsification of the same. In his article “History, battleground for politics” published in The Hindu on October 10, Mr. Singh alleges that my call for burning Indian history books written by Nehruvian historians, made at a public meeting in Delhi, is part of a larger conspiracy of the Sangh Parivar to devalue the contribution made by Jawaharlal Nehru in our history. My answer to that would be my intention is not to conspire, since my contempt for Nehru is no ...

When an earlier government wanted to take up the task of transforming cities it created a scheme called the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission which the states could access for funding of transformational initiatives. In fact Gujarat was one of the biggest beneficiaries of the scheme. Those in Delhi would have seen the logo of the scheme on the new DTC buses. When the new government takes up the task of cleaning India it hands over brand new brooms to nine ambassadors so that they can broom sanitized roads while TV cameras watch. In the hope, probably, that Sachin and Anil will use their Ferraris to transport garbage since the real need is waste collection and disposal and not 'don't litter'.
I would like to salute both judges Justice John Michael D’Cunha and Justice A.V. Chandrasekara for their bold remarks and comments while delivering their verdict. When I was going through the comments made by these two judges for the reasons for convicting Ms. Jayalalitha by the Special Court Judge and denying the bail application by the High Court Judge, my mind goes to the earlier judgment delivered by Justice Jagmohan Lal Sinha in the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s disqualification case in June 1975. The remarks made by all the three judges seem to be similar, irrespective of the fact that these two women were prominent and holding high positions. His judgment of June 12, 1975, did the entire judicial system proud. He was a judge of whom any nation would be justly proud of. His indomitable courage and judicial independence will continue to inspire and remind the present and future generations about what he did in upholding the independence of judiciary which is the cornerstone ...
