NEW LETTER TO THE IGFA; by Lou Maroun The IGFA are Doing What?!? I remember my first meeting at the new position. We were being instructed on the proper procedure to follow in assessing candidates and preparing reports. Being relatively new, I had the audacity (I thought it was just innocent curiosity) to ask why we did it that way, especially in a modern technologically advanced time. The answer was short, succinct and was that answer given for all things done for a long time whether rightly or wrongly...”Why we do it that way because it has always been done that way” So there you have it; the justification used historically for keeping a poor policy around and perpetrating it’s legacy. Just ask the people like Susan B Anthony’, Jane Addams, Alice Blackwell and many others who heard this argument endlessly as to why women should not have the right to vote. Not only were they criticized by men who felt they were “too emotional” to be involved in political decisions, but women also joined the a ...
Tight trip on EB Jane Addams from Roselle to Elmhurst. Kennedy gets sticky btwn the junction and O'Hare.
In honor of World Social Work Day, we’re featuring one of America’s most famous female social workers for our next – Jane Addams! Jane founded Hull House, a settlement house for immigrants in Chicago. With practical classes for the residents, like English language, cooking, and sewing, as well as art, music, and theater, Hull House became a central fixture in the neighborhood. was inspired to open Hull House because of her travels to London. There, she saw European settlement houses, and knew that a similar facility was needed in Chicago. And it certainly was – as the reputation of Hull House grew, so did Jane Addams’ fame, and in 1910, she was presented with the first honorary degree ever awarded to a woman by Yale University. Jane Addams was also an active pacifist – she publicly opposed war, and acted as an assistant to Herbert Hoover. For six years, she served as the president of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. In 1931, Jane was the first American woman to be ...

Folklore has always been big in Chicago history. See if you know any of these. Chicago's folklore includes legends and stories, folk speech, names and expressions, material culture, foodways, traditions, beliefs, and folk arts. Many of these traditional genres are tied to historical events, characters, and places such as the Great Fire of 1871, Al Capone, Jane Addams's Hull House, the steel mills of South Chicago and northwest Indiana, and Chicago's swampy location at the base of Lake Michigan. Chicago lore includes the word “Chicago,” with its contested origins in Native American language. From before the time of the 1871 fire, Chicagoans have used legends and stories to explain both natural and man-made events and figures. The story of Mrs. O'Leary's cow is one of the most persistent of those legends, rooted in the belief that an Irish immigrant's carelessness resulted in the fire of the century. Other legends revolve around the exploits of Al Capone, one of the most notorious gangsters of the 1920 ...

Jane Addams (right) and Mary McDowell, 1917, Chicago. Chicagoans have been active in the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), on both the local and national levels, since the organization's founding in 1920. Based in New York City, the ACLU evolved from earlier groups that responded to attacks on American pacifists during World War I and sought to defend the civil rights of conscientious objectors. The American Union Against Militarism, established in 1916, gave birth to the National Civil Liberties Bureau, which then became the ACLU. Although initially Chicago did not have a local branch of the ACLU, its residents were among the national organization's most prominent members. Jane Addams stood among the founding members and Clarence Darrow represented the ACLU in its first major case, the Scopes Monkey Trial. In 1929 Chicago members of the ACLU grew alarmed at what they saw as increasing police repression in the city. The group formally incorporated in 1931 as the Chicago Civil Liberties Committee and ...

GRACE ABBOTT Progressive Era reformer Grace Abbott was born in Grand Island, Nebraska on November 17, 1878. Reared in a family of activists, Abbott grappled early on with political and social issues. Her Quaker mother was connected to the Underground Railroad and the woman suffrage movement; her father was a leader in state politics. In 1917 Abbott joined the Department of Labor. Assigned to the Children's Bureau, a division charged with investigating and reporting issues pertaining to child welfare. Abbott began implementing the first federal law restricting child labor. In 1918 the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the legislation. By 1921, Abbott headed the Children's Bureau and led the campaign for a constitutional amendment limiting child labor. Although never ratified, the amendment set a precedent for New Deal legislation regulating the labor of children under the age of sixteen. The power of the spirit, Addams asserted, is the only thing that will heal a world that is afflicted by sorrow, death and destruction, and restore it to a condition of peace and security. - Daisaku Ikeda
