Jules Feiffer Jules Feiffer was born on 26 January 1929 in the Bronx, New York City. After attending the James Monroe High School he studied at the Art Students' League. He then went on to study at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn from 1947 to 1951, while working as an assistant on Will Eisner's comic The Spirit, featuring the eponymous masked detective. When Eisner left in 1952 Feiffer contributed scripts - with Klaus Nordling - from issue 40 onwards, and from issue 73 Feiffer was the main writer. In 1949 he created his first comic feature - "Clifford" - as part of the Comic Book Section of The Spirit. Feiffer's career was interrupted in 1951 when he was drafted into the US Army during the Korean War, serving until 1953. In the army he produced animated cartoons for the Signal Corps, and began to create his famous character "Munro" - a four-year-old boy drafted into the Army by mistake. In 1956 Feiffer offered some of his cartoons to the recently-established Village Voice, and they began running his weekl ...

Dear sirs; I am writing to you with a proposal for a feature on a young man who’s just been asked to represent his home country at an upcoming sporting event. Jesse Oduro is a native of Ghana. He started fencing at James Monroe High School under Greg Schiller and went on to fence at UC Irvine, where he recently graduated. While attending UCI, he was part of the school’s collegiate fencing team, specializing in sabre. Shortly after graduating and giving the sport up, he was approached by the Ghana Fencing Association – the newly-established national governing body for fencing in Ghana. There is a major event taking place in Chicago, May 2-4 – the Korfanty World Cup (named after Ed Korfanty, coach of 2 time US Olympic gold medalist, Mariel Zagunis) – and they wish him to represent Ghana at this tournament. The problem is that, like all new NGBs, the Ghana association has little funding to make sure Jesse can compete as they wish him to do. There is a certain amount of equipment required for intern ...
On this day in music history: March 30, 1963 - “He’s So Fine” by The Chiffons hits on the Billboard Hot 100 for 4 weeks, also topping the R&B singles chart for 4 weeks on April 6, 1963. Written by Ronnie Mack, it is the debut single and biggest for the female R&B/Pop vocal quartet from New York City. Originally consisting of group members Judy Craig, Patricia Bennett and Barbara Lee, The Chiffons are formed in 1960 while all are students at James Monroe High School in the Bronx. In 1962, the girls will meet songwriter Ronnie Mack who will become their manager, who will suggest that they add fourteen year old Sylvia Peterson to the group, making them a quartet. Mack will write “He’s So Fine” for the group as their first single. While Mack tries to secure a record deal for The Chiffons, the song will attract the attention of music publisher Bright Tunes run by Phil Margo, Mitch Margo, Jay Siegal, and Hank Medress, better known as The Tokens (“The Lion Sleeps Tonight”). They love the song and ...

By Ian Lowell WHAT IF YOU ONE DAY CAME TO THE SUDDEN AND SHOCKING REALIZATION THAT YOU HAD A VERY CLOSE ASSOCIATION WITH ONE OF THE MOST INFAMOUS AND REVILED SERIAL KILLERS IN HISTORY? HOW WOULD YOU REACT TO SUCH A SINISTER AND SHOCKING REALITY?? READ ON!!! Excerpt from Monroe Tragedy and Triumph: Our Lives in the Turbulent 1960's Now, I open the newspaper to page three and there is another photo of the Son of Sam suspect that is an older photo of David Berkowitz. One can only imagine my shock, horror and utter revulsion when I realized that this was in fact the very same David Berkowitz that I had known in the prior decade. This was the same David Berkowitz whose apartment I had once stood in, just he and I, a mere block from James Monroe High School where we were classmates. For a period of three years, we had a team in a fast pitch softball league at Shorehaven Beach Club in The Bronx. During the entire time, I was the pitcher on this team and we had won the Shorehaven youth championship two consecutiv ...

This Man was one of my Grandfathers best friends and would come and visit him almost every Sunday Morning. I spent a many Sunday listening to him and Gman discuss the good ole days and how the World was going to *** quickly.
