Here are my favorite shots of Johnny Winter... I loved when he recorded with Muddy Waters...Pinetop Perkins and James Cotton. ..in Hard Again. I was about 14 or 15 years old when I found that album...and it had just been made. His beautiful energy was all over that album...just shouting everywhere!! Lol.. He was truly born to play everywhere all of the time. He once broke the curfue at Lone Star Cafe. One more song he was told. So? He played about 15 minutes and asked another guitar player to take his guitar...while he was playing.as if the song never stopped. Then Johnny walked off stage while the band kept playing...and he went to the bathroom...and then he came back and slipped right into the guitar while the other guys was playing...and voila...he played a long time!! Maybe another half hour?? He was a total crowd pleaser... Guitar Stamina. That is always impressive to me. Infact it is down right sexy...when musicians just keep pouring out... and I am sure he will be pouring his spirit and light is .. ...

This is an unusual programme from the collection of James Cotton. James takes up the story...'The very first time Liverpool played in Bangkok was 10th June 1983, and here is the programme all in Thai language. Held at the Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok, the same stadium where we played a couple of months ago, Liverpool won 3-0 with goals from Alan Kennedy, Sammy Lee and Graeme Souness. can read the date on the front cover, it says 10 MITOONAYON (means June in Thai) 2526. The Thai calendar is 543 years ahead of our own Gregorian calendar so the current year 2013 is 2556 here! So you can see that 2526 - 543 = 1983. The centre pages and prior 2 pages features biographies with almost the only English language script throughout, with players' names, including reserves John McGregor, Bobby Savage and Steve Foley.' Great item and I am assuming a very rare item. Thanks to James for sharing it with us.

When blues legend James Montgomery plays the harmonica, he "brings it on home". Whether it's recording with Kid Rock, sitting in with Gregg Allman, or fronting his hot band of thirty years, Montgomery plays with authority. He will bring his blues and his amazing talent back to Willimantic on Saturday, May31, at The Bread Box Theater, 220 Valley St. While growing up in Detroit he learned first-hand from the masters - James Cotton, John Lee Hooker, and Jr. Wells - at the legendary "Chessmate." Over the years, he's carried on in the tradition and continues to be a vital presence in Blues as one of the most dynamic performers on the scene. James played the local, legendary Shaboo Inn more than any other artist and was always considered the best entertainer ever to take that stage. Appearing in a special acoustic setting, James is bringing renown guitarist George McCann to do an authentic blues set that will wow you while it educates you. Since his Shaboo days, Montgomery has toured with many major artists, i ...

Four days until the Clela concert! Here's today's Q&A: Q: How did you come up with your sound? (Folk, Country, Jazz, African mix is very diverse and different.) A: My sound is a combination of my influences; 70's I lived in Montreal and was exposed Canadian pop radio; McGarrigle Sisters, Ellen McLwaine, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. In the early 80's I traveled to PEI, I took a harmonica with me and I learned to play it. I lived and performed in PEI for 4 years. I was introduced to Celtic music- fiddle tunes, country music - Hank Williams & Patsy Cline and blues - Dutch Mason, James Cotton. The late Ontario singer songwriter Willie P. Bennett released a few albums during this period that were very influential on all of us. In the mid 80's I returned to Toronto and studied jazz at Humber College for 1 year where I heard horns, jazz vocalists and jazz instrumentalists. In the 90's I took formal vocal lessons from an opera singer and I discovered "world music"; the Buena Vista Social Club from Cuba and Cesar ...

Sam Myers got a second chance at the brass ring, and he happily made the most of it. As frontman for Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets, the legally blind Myers's booming voice and succinct harp work have enjoyed a higher profile recently than ever before. Although he was born and mostly raised in Mississippi, Myers got into the habit of coming up to visit Chicago as early as 1949 (where he learned from hearing Little Walter and James Cotton). Myers joined a band, King Mose & the Royal Rockers, after settling in Jackson, MS, in 1956. Myers's 1957 debut 45 for Johnny Vincent's Ace logo, "Sleeping in the Ground"/"My Love Is Here to Stay," featured backing by the Royal Rockers. Myers played both drums and harp behind slide guitar great Elmore James at a 1961 session for Bobby Robinson's Fire label in New Orleans. Myers cut a standout single of his own for Robinson's other logo, Fury Records, the year before that coupled his appealing remake of Jimmy Reed's "You Don't Have to Go" with "Sad, Sad Lonesome ...

★ ichiro Profile ★ Fascinated with blues, he headed to Chicago with a change of clothes and a guitar in 1988. Though it was his first time in the states and he knew no one (or much english for that matter), he spent the whole time doing live sessions at Chicago's various blues clubs. (At first he asked to play and before long, he was introduced from club to club) After coming back to Japan, he signed with WEA and released his debut solo album in 1990. The album's rhythm section consisted of Gerry MaCaboy(Bass) and Brendan O'niel(Drums) from the Rory Gallagher Band. That same year, he appeared in the Japan Blues Carnival co-starred by James Cotton and Lonnie Brooks. Ichiro was the first Japanese guitarist to become a Gibson USA/Endorsee. His second album was recorded in LA with Bob Glaub(Bass), Marc Brown(Bass), Chad Cromwell(Drums), Rob Ladd(Drums) and Greg Droman, from the Joe Walsh band, as the engineer. Impressed with ichiro's guitar playing ability, Albert Collins accepted an invitation to play on ...

TONIGHT (SAT) 9pm, January 4 at Smoken Joe's BBQ and Blues-- Chris Stovall Brown--Veteran performer Chris Stovall Brown has had his heart and soul in the blues for over three decades, traveling all around the world performing and producing with some of the greats. From an early age he was already drumming with R&B/Blues giants like Big Mama Thornton & Sil Austin, playing harmonica with Luther Georgia Boy Johnson and George Harmonica Smith, and trading licks on guitar with Bo Diddley, Howard Tate, James Cotton, Henry Butler, James Blood Ulmer and many others. He has appeared on recordings with Earring George Mayweather, Sax Gordon, Ron Levy, & Weepin Willie. He continues to collaborate with some of the best in the business, putting on show-stopping performances for audiences everywhere.
Albert Abraham "Abe" Smothers was born in Tchula, Mississippi, learned guitar at the age of 15, and relocated to Chicago two years later. He soon appeared on stage playing alongside Arthur “Big Boy” Spires, Magic Sam, Otis Rush and Lazy Bill Lucas. In 1958 he joined up with Howlin' Wolf, and played on Wolf's recording session for Chess Records the following year. Tracks Smothers contributed to included "I've Been Abused," "Howlin' for My Darling," and "Mr. Airplane Man." In 1961 he founded Little Smokey Smothers and the Pipeplayers. He later met Paul Butterfield and became a founding member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. He was replaced in the band by Elvin Bishop, but developed a friendship that lasted a lifetime. Throughout the 1960s Smothers appeared with Buddy Guy, James Cotton, Earl Hooker, and Junior Wells. Musical opportunities dried up in the 1970s, and Smothers worked in construction. He recorded again, after several years break, in 1979 as part of Mojo Buford's Chicago Blues Summi ...

Far and Away 2013 I hate doing these things. There are too few slots and too many categories. This creates a problem when you come up with a list of 50 plus things you feel deserve attention. The categories help but as a result some of the favourites for Best Album of the year get shuffled to other categories so others that don't fit in the other category have a place Ry Cooder's release is a good example. It ended up in the live category. All the selections in the tribute category would have been in or come close to the top 10 if i had had 10 slots for that category. The Little Walter and Songs For Slim projects were some of my favourites. As a result this may be the last one of these i do. here's how it shook out ALBUMS OF THE YEAR 1. Richard Dobson: Here In The Garden (Brambus). 2. David Bromberg: Only Slightly Mad (Appleseed) 3. Austin Lounge Lizards: Home and Deranged (Blue Corn) 4. James Cotton (with Keb Mo)/ Mississippi Mud/Cotton Mouth Man/ alligator 5. Si Kahn and the Looping B ...
2013 was a really great year. It started off with a bang in January with Blues At The Crossroads tour, a coast to coast run of theaters celebrating the music of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. Kim Wilson and The Fabulous Thunderbirds backed us all up, and I was in the company of Blues legends James Cotton, Bob Margolin and Jody Williams. I was the youngest frontman, and let's just say it was like being in school. I've never had so much fun in my life. Such an amazing experience. In March, I was out of the tour bus and back in the van again to support the new album "Get It!" which was released on March 19th. Get It! is my first album of all instrumental guitar music and also the first album on Heartfixer Music, my new label. Its great to be working again with my old friend/distributor Michael Rothschild and also my new friend/PR gal Betsie Brown and new friend/digital distributor *** Wainman. DIED NOV 15 2011, Mark "Moogy" Klingman (September 7, 1950 – November 15, 2011) was an American musician and songwriter. He was a founding member of Todd Rundgren's band Utopia, and later became a solo recording artist, bandleader and songwriter. He released two solo recordings, and his songs have been covered by artists as wide ranging as Johnny Winter, Carly Simon, James Cotton, Thelma Houston, Eric Clapton, Barry Manilow and Guns N' Roses. He played on stage with Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, Luther Vandross, Lou Reed, Jeff Beck and Allan Woody & Warren Haynes of the Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule. Other than Rundgren, his longest musical association may have been with Bette Midler, whom he served as band leader and who adopted for her signature song "(You Gotta Have) Friends", composed by Klingman and William "Buzzy" Linhart
This is not my bands perspective but I recently heard something that I can't get off my mind. It was about being of color to sing the blues or play it! I grew up in N.Y. and lived next door to Mose Allison and grew up with his children. Now, he knew the blues and would take me and his son John to all of his shows when we were young kids. I'd be back stage with Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, James Cotton, etc. and they all were my friends and treated me as their own kid. I did not see color! Then I started designing and tuning harmonicas for Hohner in Hicksville N.Y. when I was about 19 years old. I worked on harmonicas for Sonny Terry, Stevie Wonder, Paul Butterfield, James Cotton, Sugar Blue, William Clarke and many more cats’. I was with Stevie Wonder in his private dressing room at Radio City Music Hall the day they announced that Martin Luther King, Jr. was going to be celebrated as a Federal Holiday. It is seen as a day to promote equal rights for all Americans, regardless of their background. Sonn ...
I find this David Foster guy very interesting! The Shaboo Inn was an old textile mill built in 1847, that had been turned into a run down hotel, until 5 kids in their twenties from two families bought it and turned it into the most outstanding musical venue the state of Connecticut has ever seen. Other bigger clubs opened around the state with advanced audio and lighting systems but that’s not what made the experience of seeing an artist perform at the Shaboo so great. It’s not easy putting your finger on it, but the audience was so close and so packed in, that the artist felt the love of the crowd like they had never felt it before. The Shaboo was not just a great place for the spectator, but artist after artist, came back again and again, to experience the adoration of the people of Connecticut and beyond. Blues acts like Muddy Waters and James Cotton found the Shaboo to be their home away from home and pretty much let every act from the Missisippi Delta to the South Side of Chicago know that this . ...

Way way back in the day I went to listen to a Texas R & B band that featured twin saxes. The Cobras were great but I made a mental note to learn their guitarists name, Stevie Ray Vaughn. Also the way back machine found me on Beale Street for a Johnny Clyde Copeland benefit that James Cotton was putting on. It started around 3 in the afternoon and we left at 5:30 the next morning with the music still going. Many musicians sat in and early in the afternoon a young Susan Tedeschi played long before she had any CD's out. I knew she too was someone that would make it. Today at the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival I heard Selwyn Birchwood and his band. Unknown previously to me, I'm now a huge fan. Later we caught Joe Price playing the blues using only his guitar and stomping feet. I could listen to this man for hours. Two more groups rounded out our first day and run, don't walk if you get a chance to see either Davina & the Vagabonds or Southern Hospitality with Victor Wainwright, J.P. Soars, & Damon Fowler. ...

James Cotton (born July 1, 1935, Tunica, Mississippi, United States) is an American blues harmonica player, singer and songwriter, who has performed and recorded with many of the great blues artists of his time as well as with his own band. Although he played drums early in his career, Cotton is famous for his work on the harmonica. Cotton began his professional career playing the blues harp in Howlin' Wolf's band in the early 1950s. In 1965 he formed the Jimmy Cotton Blues Quartet, utilizing Otis Spann on piano to record between gigs with Muddy Waters' band. In the 1970s, Cotton played harmonica on Muddy Waters' Grammy Award winning 1977 album Hard Again, produced by Johnny Winter. Cotton became interested in music when he first heard Sonny Boy Williamson II on the radio. He left home with his uncle and moved to West Helena, Arkansas, finding Williamson there. For many years Cotton claimed that he told Williamson that he was an orphan, and that Williamson took him in and raised him; a story he admitted i ...

Blues calendar: These days in the history of the blues ...June 24 In 1944 (69 years ago) in Wellington, United Kingdom, was born Jeff Beck (Jeff Beck). Remembering George "Harmonica" Smith (April 22, 1924 – October 2, 1983)(born Allen George Smith) was an American electric blues harmonica player. Born in West Helena, Arkansas, United States, but brought up in Cairo, Illinois, he began playing professionally in 1951.He was recruited to join Muddy Waters' band in 1954, making his presence between the short-lived Henry Strong, and James Cotton. He would rejoin Waters in 1966.[He eventually made the decision to leave Chicago, and spent much of his adult life on the West Coast of America. Smith played with the blues combo, Bacon Fat, and tutored its harmonica player Rod Piazza, and mentored guitarist (Blues Musician) Buddy Reed, before joining forces with Big Mama Thornton in the 1970s. He appeared on her live album Jail (1975), and with another harmonica student William Clarke. The few solo albums he recorded in his life reflected his admiration for the playing style of Little Walter. George "Harmonica" Smith died in 1983, in Los Angeles, California at the ...

Chop wood, carry water. Mr Hartness and I are adding some great new music to the duo and the quartet. A full day in the shed is what's up today. I want to open up a conversation I have been meaning to get at, "who is the blues harmonica community post Chicago" ? SPAH (Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica) would like to believe they are the lifeblood of all genres of harmonica music. In my opinion they are the establishment and that can create a pecking order that stifles creativity. I.E. The School of Jazz Studies at Julliard, which was Wynton Marsalis's lifelong quest to have that art form be an institution. I see jazz stars come out of that school. A handful of iconic players that get all the good gigs in NY. Back to harmonica. The Cafe au Go Go - 152 Bleecker Street - NYC menu from 1967 The club was the first New York venue for the Grateful Dead, Richie Havens and the Blues Project were weekly regulars, and the Stone Poneys featuring Linda Ronstadt played frequently. Van Morrison, Tim Hardin, Tim Buckley, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Oscar Brown, Jr., the Youngbloods, the Siegel-Schwall Blues Band, John Hammond, Jr., The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Michael Bloomfield, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, The Chambers Brothers, Canned Heat, The Fugs, Odetta, Country Joe and the Fish, all played there.
