The old movie stars like Bogart, James Cagney, Jimmy Stewart, they weren't ...
I stand with my pops on this.. John Wayne ? Nah. He ain't no James Cagney,Spencer Tracy, Jimmy Stewart or Glen Ford.
The cat is happy catching rays atop a storage bin near a front window. I am drinking a cup of coffee having risen at 11:00..Stayed in bed to watch "The Philadelphia Story" on TCM. It was/is a perfect film..like "Bringing Up Baby" which also paired Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn, a perfect blend of snappy dialogue, and compound circumstance..Jimmy Stewart and Ruth Hussey are the bees knees in "TPS" and along with the young Virginia Weidler the entire cast delivers the total package, a prototype of what a romantic comedy should be. Right now I have the jingoistic-ally marvelous "Yankee Doodle Dandy" running in the background. Nobody else quite like James Cagney on film, let alone Cagney the hoofer! A perfect day to count my blessings, gratitude the centerpiece of all I endeavor as the hours unfold..♥
To Phil — Jon Dambacher, early 2/2/14 To Phil On screen you were as gigantic as James Cagney, as delicate as Jimmy Stewart, with as much jolly boyish sophistication as Orson Welles. You became a household name & an actor’s actor, having worked with some of my generations most inspired creators, Mike Nichols on stage & screen, all but one of Paul Thomas Anderson’s films, David Mamet, Charlie Kaufman’s “Synecdoche, New York,” & one of my favorites, your first lead role in your brother Gordy’s film, “Love Liza.” I’m saddened I didn’t get to see you in New York last year as I’d hoped, when Mike Nichols directed you on stage in “Death of A Salesman.” You kept your darkness away from us. Certainly it’s none of our business, as the anonymous audience, to be privy to a public figure’s personal life. However with you, Phil, this time it feels personal. Your fans knew nothing of this pain. Certainly an intelligent observer may construct various shades of angry, melancholic, even m .. ...
Boys, if you did imitations in Junior High of James Cagney and Jimmy Stewart, you are geezers. Girls, that might be Tallulah Bankhead and Carol Channing for you.
10 minutes until I watch one of my all time favorite movies, "Yankee Doodle Dandy." I love James Cagney he was one of the best right up there with Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart, and my most favorite two of all Paul Newman and Steve Mcqueen. My girls Natalie Wood and Marilyn Monroe.
The great actors IMO were Betty Davis, Joan Crawford, James Cagney, Jimmy Stewart, Maureen O'Hara and of course Bogey. Lots more...
Jimmy Stewart, Orson Welles and James Cagney back stage during separate productions:
where do i start...James Dean,Steve Mcqueen,Bogart,Jimmy Stewart,Garbo,Cary Grant,Cagney and like you Davis & Hepburn
Jimmy Stewart, James Cagney, and Orson Welles, just hangin' out:
We live in an age of mediocrity. Stars today are not the same stature as Bogie, James Cagney, Spencer Tracy, Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart.
I am always amazed at "the day after" syndrome in which people proclaim something is the BEST or GREATEST based on the last action of an individual. The posts on yahoo and other blog sites have now crowned Daniel Day Lewis as BEST ACTOR ever. WOW. Were these people born yesterday? Yes, he's phenomenal. But why is it our society has to have the disposable mentality the second something else comes along? How can anyone overlook almost a century of acting and just cast all the others aside. Can we give any consideration to Pacino, Brando, Dean, Newman, Redford, Portier, Robeson, Ben Kingsley, Charlton Heston, Denzel Washington, Claude Raines, James Cagney, Lou Gossett Jr., Ossie Davis, Jimmy Stewart, Fredric March...shall I go on?
We might have quietly entered the age of Oscar inflation. Just off the top of my head, actors and the number of competitive Oscars they have: Clark Gable (one), Jimmy Stewart (one), John Wayne (one), Humphrey Bogart (one), Edward G. Robinson (none - never even nominated), Hitchcock (none), Orson Welles (one-half) Barbara Stanwyck (NONE), Doris Day (none), Myrna Loy (NONE), Al Pacino (ONE), James Cagney (one), Carole Lombard (none), Faye Dunaway (one), Cary Grant (none), Natalie Wood (none), Paul Newman (one).
I got the names of the streets wrong yesterday. They are repaving North side of James Cagney, Ingrid Bergman to John Wayne, all of Betty Grable and Fred Astaire. Some cement was poured today but not up and past our house. they stopped about Jimmy Stewart. Progress!
Norman Peters passed away today. My mentor that raised me in the business that made my life. I loved him and his family for that gift. which he gave many. He was the man you want your son to be and the husband you want your daughter to marry. it is almost like Jimmy Stewart, James Cagney and Pat obrien rolled up in one you will always remain the best in my heart and mind. love you baby.
I love old movies. Cary Grant, James Cagney, Jimmy Stewart, Spencer Tracy... They don't make 'em like that anymore.
Awkwardly in love with James Cagney and Jimmy Stewart. The old man obsession has gone too far
One thing I don't like about movies today is that they seem too self aware. I don't know whether it was just time changing but after the Golden Years of Hollywood and the collapse of the Studio System all the movies since, even some of the great movies from the 70's, just lack a certain something that those old films from the 30's, 40's and 50's had in spades. Same goes for the actors. Whether it was the whole sense memory craze created by Strasberg or something along those lines I don't know, but I do know that most actors I see today, with a few exceptions, don't have that natural charisma that you saw in people like Jimmy Stewart or James Cagney for instance. Just some food for thought.
Netflix on Xbox finally changed their format to do people searches! Last night I FINALLY got to see some James Cagney and Jimmy Stewart!
How am I going to get any sleep - Turner Classics is having a marathon of biography movies of composers such as George M. Cohan, John Phillip Sousa, Glen Miller, Woody Guthrie and George Gershwin starring people like Jimmy Stewart and James Cagney - I love all of their music and all the movies but it goes on nearly all night - guess I'll sleep all day tomorrow
I still have it. It would have had cameos from James Cagney, Jimmy Stewart, alot of Warner stars.
