Lewis Hamilton shrugs off poor start to win Italian Grand Prix via
In pole position for the first time since May, Lewis Hamilton has hailed the efforts of his Mercedes team as he targets the Italian Grand Prix win. Hamilton has had a disappointing run in qualifying of late especially in Germany and Hungary when car troubles took him out of the running. He fought back to secure a front row starting position for the last race in Belgium and in Monza on Saturday went one better as he grabbed pole position. It is Hamilton's first qualifying P1 since May's Spanish GP and put an end to team-mate Nico Rosberg's run of four successive pole positions. "I feel excited for tomorrow," Hamilton said. "I'm very proud of my guys. My guys on my side of the garage have obviously also been through the difficult time with me and they have done a remarkable job in terms of every time bouncing back and fixing the car and dealing with the difficulties. "We have done this as a team and it is great to have another 1-2 for the team. I'm really proud that I could be up here for them." The team, t ...

After an interim of seven years, during which World War II wreaked havoc across the European continent, the first post-war Mille Miglia auto race is held on this day in 1947 in Brescia, Italy. The Mille Miglia ("Thousand Miles") was the brainchild of the Brescia Automobile Club, formed in 1926 under the leadership of Franco Mazzotti and Count Aymo Maggi. An important center for Italian motor sports since the turn of the century, Brescia was smarting over the fact that Monza (near Milan) had been chosen as the site of the prestigious Italian Grand Prix. Using its considerable political connections, the fledgling automobile club gained the approval of Italy's Fascist government to run a race from Brescia to Rome--a distance of some 1,600 kilometers (around 1,000 miles) on Italian public roads. The first race, held on March 26 and 27, 1927, featured all of the leading Italian drivers; foreign participation was limited to three tiny French-made Peugeots in the lower-power Class H field. Cars made by local man ...

Gianclaudio Giuseppe "Clay" Regazzoni (September 5, 1939 – December 15, 2006) was a Swiss racing car driver. He competed in Formula One races from 1970 to 1980, winning five Grands Prix. His first win was the Italian Grand Prix at Monza in his debut season, driving for Ferrari. He remained with the Italian team until 1972. After a single season with BRM, Regazzoni returned to Ferrari for a further three years, 1974 to 1976. After finally leaving Ferrari at the end of 1976, Regazzoni joined the Ensign and Shadow teams, before moving to Williams in 1979, where he took the British team's first ever Grand Prix victory, the 1979 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

"Zoom flies again" - Following the success of its début exhibition in 2013, Zoom returns to London next month with a fresh series of photographs from the Formula One paddock. Taken by a cast of Formula One drivers, team members and a number of its known characters, the shots go some little way to opening up viewers to the lives of those within the sport. Thankfully, many of the pictures go beyond the mere confines of paddocks and hospitality units, offering up an alternative view of those who live and breathe Formula One – a category of sport and entertainment that can appear bizarre and absurd, to say the least. Whether it Nico Rosberg posing with the vintage Mercedes W154, as he touches the sport’s illustrious history, or Fernando Alonso’s now famous shot of the roaring crowds at Monza following last year’s Italian Grand Prix or Christian Horner with his miniature donkeys, Zoom portrays an angle of the sport rarely witnessed on television – and this collection is all the better for it. As wit ...

Canadian GP: marshal killed in crane accident The FIA has announced that a Canadian Grand Prix marshal has died following an incident at the Montreal track on Sunday. The marshal was helping to retrieve Esteban Gutierrez's crashed car following the race when he tripped while trying to retrieve a dropped radio and fell under the wheels of a mobile crane. The marshal could not be seen by the driver of the crane, and was run over - suffering serious injuries. After being taken to the circuit's medical centre he was transferred by helicopter to the Sacre-Coeur hospital in Montreal for treatment in its traumatology department. However, despite all efforts to help him, the marshal succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night. The unidentified man is the third marshal to have been killed since 2000. At the Italian Grand Prix in 2000, Paolo Ghislimberti died after being struck by a wheel that flew over the barriers after an opening lap crash. The following season at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix, Graham Beveridge w ...
Lorenzo Wins Italian Grand Prix, Crutchlow Podiums Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo struck brilliantly once again at the Mugello Circuit, taking his third consecutive Italian Grand Prix victory in fine form on Sunday, June 2. The win is also his second of the 2013 MotoGP season. Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow finished third, with teammate Bradley Smith in ninth after shaking off a pair of heavy falls prior to the race. However factory rider Valentino Rossi was not so fortunate, colliding with rival Alvaro Bautista and crashing out of the race on the opening lap. Lorenzo’s 25th premier-class win moves him to second in the standings, with Crutchlow in fourth as the top satellite rider. The MotoGP series now heads to Catalunya on June 14-16. After starting second on the grid, Lorenzo quickly passed leader Dani Pedrosa to take control of the race. Both Pedrosa and Marc Marquez stayed close behind the reigning world champion until the halfway point, when the YZR-M1 rider put the h ...
HONDA RACING INFORMATION 2013 FIM MotoGP/Moto2/Moto3 World Championships Round five Italian Grand Prix, Mugello Race day, Sunday, 2 June 2013 Weather: warm and dry Temperature: ambient 21 degrees C, track 42 degrees C PEDROSA EXTENDS ROSTRUM RUN TO PRESERVE TITLE LEAD Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC213V) finished second in today’s Italian GP, overcoming rear grip issues to secure his fourth successive rostrum finish and maintain his lead in the World Championship over race winner Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha). Pedrosa started from pole position and led off the line, but was pushed into second by Lorenzo with an aggressive move at the first corner. Lorenzo later apologised to his fellow Spaniard and title rival. The Honda rider stayed close to hound his countryman mercilessly until after the halfway point of the 23-lap race around the fast and spectacular Mugello circuit in the Tuscan foothills outside Florence. Then as tyre grip faded he was forced to slacken his pace, to be sure of a safe podium finish. Marc Ma ...
As many enthusiastic supporters looked on from the Ducati Grandstand, both Ducati Team riders posted their best dry results of the year today at Mugello, with Andrea Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden riding their Desmosedici GP13 machines to fifth and sixth places, respectively, in the TIM Italian Grand Prix. The teammates started from rows one and three respectively, and after avoiding a first-lap crash involving two other riders, they found themselves battling one another, along with Stefan Bradl, in a fight for fifth place that lasted much of the race. The German got the better of that struggle, but after Marc Marquez fell near the end, Dovizioso and Hayden took the fifth and sixth spots. The Ducati Team racers were followed by Ducati Test Team rider Michele Pirro. Participating as a wildcard entry, the Italian advanced steadily through the pack from his 10th-place starting spot. His eventual seventh-place finishing position was his best result of the year so far, and the second-best of his premier-clas ...
. A few questions for the Italian Grand Prix weekend: Will Rossi finally put it all together? Is it now or never for the Doctor? Will Marquez be affected by his 330km/h crash? Will Pedrosa’s impressive podium ratio continue? Can the Yamaha’s get the better of the Repsol Honda? Crutchlow has stated that he knows that Espargaro has been signed by the Yamaha factory and is pretty peeved about it. Will this inspire him to even greater heights? What can Ducati do at their test track? And who will shine for them? Will Ben Spies start the race? If he does, will he finish? Will Randy de Puniet continue his day one performance of fastest CRT and just 1.4 second off the fastest lap? Can Westy qualify in the Top 15? Can Jack Miller get a front row start? Is it possible for Arthur Sissis to get a decent qualifying session in? What can Bryan Staring do on his birthday weekend? Will Edwards manage to finish again? Who will get pole?
May 20, 1973 will forever be remembered as the most tragic day in the history of motorcycle racing. At Monza, Italy, 14 riders crashed in the first turn of the 250cc Italian Grand Prix event, taking the lives of veteran rider Renzo Pasolini and the reigning 250cc World Champion Jarno Saarinen. Their speed in the Curva Grande, where the crash occurred, was estimated to be 135 miles per hour. It could be said that contributing factors to this great disaster was a “Perfect Storm” of many bad things all happening at the very worst time in the very worst location. There is one theory that what set things in motion that fateful day was a piston seizure in Pasolini’s Aermacchi/Harley-Davidson 250 caused him to fall as they sped through the Curva Grande on the first lap. With no run-off area, Saarinen and the other riders would have no way to avoid him. Whether or not this was a contributing factor may never be proven. While many support the previous theory, the overwhelming conclusions for the reason of th ...
After reviewing the video of the big Daytona wreck, it's reasonable to speculate about the crash's impact on NASCAR and motorports in general. First: this isn't the first time that something like this has happened. From the 1955 LeMans crash, to the 1961 crash at the Italian Grand Prix that killed Wolfgang Von Trips and several spectators, to a 1952 crash at the Watkins Glen street course, these crashes have been part of racing over the years, However, the most serious of these crashes have changed the sport the LeMans crash led the AAA to get out of racing and caused the banning of racing in Switzerland, a ban that remained in effect until 2007. The minimum changes will probably involve moving spectators further back from trackside. That happened after major crashes on the main straightaway at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1964 and 1973.The Speedway has already subtly acknowledged those risks by adding a high fence between the pits and nearby grandstands. Will the Daytona crash lead to substantia .. ...
Mika and McLaren – a special relationship~ As we inch our way towards the start of the 2013 Formula 1 season, I find myself harking back nearly 20 years, to 1993; and, in a McLaren context, that means Ron Dennis, of course, and Ayrton Senna, of course, but also the arrival on the Woking scene of Mika Hakkinen. During the summer of 1993, it became clear to all at McLaren - and to journalists and fans too, truth be told - that the high hopes that Ron had nurtured for Michael Andretti’s on-track performance were not living up to their pre-season billing. Michael was the son of racing legend Mario Andretti, the 1978 F1 World Champion for Colin Chapman’s Lotus, and, while there was no doubt about Michael’s robustly impressive credentials in the IndyCar racing environment, his bustling talent was destined not to kick forward at all effectively into the higher-tech cut-and thrust of the F1 front line. In truth, Ron’s decision to sign the Michael for 1993, announced during the 1992 Italian Grand Prix we ...
