KUALA KETIL, Malaysia — A year ago, Mohd Lotfi Ariffin bid his family goodbye and headed for Syria, where he intended to fulfill what he saw as his religious duty fighting President Bashar al-Assad. He left behind his wife, their six children and his job as a religious school teacher here to fight with his fellow Sunnis more than 4,000 miles away. Mr. Lotfi, 46, was one of a few dozen Malaysians who officials in this moderate Muslim majority country say have traveled to Syria to join militant rebel groups, including the Islamic State, the Nusra Front and Ajnad al-Sham. Security experts estimate that there are more than 18,000 foreign fighters involved in the conflict. “It’s easy and it’s more organized there,” said Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, the chief of Malaysia’s counterterrorism task force. “You can join any group that you want there.” Some Malaysians, like Mr. Lotfi, document their journey on Social Media — posting photographs and videos from Syria, some lighthearted travelogues and ot ...
SubhanAllah. Suicide Attack Hits Cafe in Northern Lebanon An attack on a cafe in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli killed up to nine people and wounded over 30 others. Two blasts were reported, at least one of which was from a suicide bomber. Some reports say a grenade was thrown into the cafe, while others say there was a twin suicide attack. It was the first major attack in Lebanon in months, hitting the mainly Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen. Al-Nusra Front claimed responsibility for the attack, which it said was carried out in “revenge for the Sunnis in Syria and Lebanon.” However, Lebanese Interior Minister Nohad Machnouk said that a preliminary investigation suggested the Islamic State group was behind the attack. On Monday, Lebanese police raided Roumieh prison, which reportedly holds high profile Islamist militants, searching for detainees suspected of involvement in Saturday’s attack. Jabhat Al-Nusra, or the Al-Nusra Front, have since their formation in January 2012 established themselves as one of the most fearsome groups fighting the forces of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. Unlike their now more famous fellow travellers in the Islamic State, the Al-Nusra Front still claims to derive its authority from Ayman al-Zawahiri, leader of al-Qaeda. Middle East Eye's reporter travelled to Orchard Palace in Aleppo, to capture exclusive footage of the al-Nusra Front in action, still fighting to bring down the House of Assad and establish an islamic state in the country.
The mosque’s management is accused of “promoting ISIL values and encouraging young Muslims in the city to travel to Syria and Iraq, and join the ranks of the group, along with Al-Nusra Front.” Egyptian Human Rights Activist Ahmad Harqan recently said that the Islamic State and Boko Haram are following the Qur’an doing “what the Prophet Muhammad and his companions did.” If he is even partially correct, German authorities have a much larger problem on their hands than just this one mosque. But anyway, how is it that no one in the mosque ever stood up and said, “Now wait a minute, fellas. You’re missing all the peaceful and tolerant teachings of the Qur’an, and hijacking one of the world’s great religions”? “Mosque in Germany found spreading ISIL ideology closed by police,” KUNA, December 5, 2014 (thanks to David): BERLIN, Dec 5 (KUNA) — German authorities have closed a mosque in the no ...

U.S.-led air strikes killed 553 fighters, 32 civilians in Syria: monitor: (Reuters) - Air strikes by U.S.-led forces have killed 553 Islamist fighters and 32 civilians during a month-long campaign in Syria, a monitoring group which tracks the violence said on Thursday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the vast majority of the deaths, 464, were militants from Islamic State, an Al Qaeda offshoot which has grabbed large areas of Syria and neighboring Iraq. The attacks also killed 57 members of the Al Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front, the Observatory said. Six of the civilians were children and five were women, it added. The United States has been carrying out strikes in Iraq against Islamic State since July and in Syria since September with the help of Arab allies. Britain and France have also struck Islamic State targets in Iraq. Washington justified its action in Syria under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter, which covers an individual or collective right to self-defense against armed at ...

Qatar's Ties to Terror Groups Worry US Saturday, 11 Oct 2014 01:40 PM By Sandy Fitzgerald Qatar's continued ties with some of the most powerful Islamist groups in the Middle East could cause serious difficulties for the Obama administration's international coalition to fight the Islamic State (ISIS), U.S. and Arab officials believe. The wealthy nation has links with Nusra Front, which is the main Al Qaeda affiliate in Syria, reports The Wall Street Journal, in addition to Hamas and the Taliban, and diplomats from Washington's closest Arab allies say Qatar is publicly supporting U.S. policies while still aiding its enemies. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan have all been pushing Washington to reprimand Qatar over the relationships, but the country is considered a vital part of anti-ISIS efforts. Its al-Udeid Air Base is being used to launch airstrikes on ISIS targets in Syria and Iraq, and the country is one of five that are formally taking part in the coalition against the militants. In a ...
The genome of Islamic terrorism Islamic State, Hamas, Hezbollah and the other Islamic terrorist organizations, like Al-Qaida and Nusra Front, all carry the gene that calls for the destruction of the State of Israel. It took the grizzly, televised beheadings of two journalists by an Islamic State executioner to arouse the western world to the dangers of Islamic terrorism. In short order, U.S. President Barack Obama assembled a coalition to fight the Islamic State group and within days the bombing of IS targets by coalition aircraft began. They evidently did not take the kind of precautions taken by the Israeli Air Force during the recent campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip – prior warnings, “knocks on the roof,” a call for civilians to evacuate the area – in order to minimize casualties among innocent civilians, and there was the inevitable collateral damage. President Obama and the countries that have joined the coalition to fight IS have been well aware that Israel has been contending with I ...

Tell the Imperial President: No More Wars! By Patrick J. Buchanan Tuesday - July 1, 2014 Barack Obama has asked Congress for $500 million to train and arm rebels of the Free Syrian Army who seek to overthrow the government. Before Congress takes up his proposal, both houses should demand that Obama explain exactly where he gets the constitutional authority to plunge us into what the president himself calls "somebody else's Civil War." Syria has not attacked us. Syria does not threaten us. Why are we joining a jihad to overthrow the Syrian government? President Bashar Assad is fighting against the al Qaida-linked al-Nusra Front and the even more extreme and vicious Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. In training and arming the FSA, we are enlisting in a cause where our foremost fighting allies are Islamists, like those who brought down the twin towers, and a Sunni terrorist army that seeks to bring down the government we left behind in Baghdad. What are we doing? Assad is no angel. But before this uprising, w ...
Takfiri militant groups, led by the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), have reportedly taken control of two western Iraqi towns and a strategic crossing on the border between Iraq and Syria. Iraqi security sources say the terrorist groups captured the towns of Rawah and Anah in Anbar Province on Saturday. The militants also seized the Qaim border crossing and its surrounding areas following the withdrawal of the militants linked to the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA) and al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front. The FSA and al-Nusra had taken control of the Iraqi side of the border nearly a week ago. The takeover of Qaim has forced residents to flee eastward. The ISIL militants have captured large swathes of northern Iraq since June 10. Days ago, Iraq’s top Shia cleric, Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, called for the people to join the battle against the terrorists and defend the country. Iraqi media say more than two million people have so far voiced their readiness to join the fight. On Saturd ...
Saudi Arabia escalated its campaign against the Muslim Brotherhood today by including the organization on a controversial new list of terrorist movements. This new step comes in the wake of a similar decision by Egypt to designate the Brotherhood as a terrorist group in December, as well as a diplomatic incident this week in which Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt withdrew their ambassadors to punish Qatar for its sponsorship of the Brotherhood. Eight other organizations were also listed by name in today’s announcement. “The Organization Al Qaeda” was listed, as well as several of its current or former affiliates: Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, Al Qaeda in Yemen, Al Qaeda in Iraq, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, and Syria’s Nusra Front. Two Iranian clients were named: the Shi’ite Houthi rebels in northern Yemen and Hezbollah in the Hejaz, which is a Saudi branch of the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah listed in a 2001 U.S. indictment as the main perpetrator of a 1996 terrorist at ...
[you know what I am looking at] Headlines: "ISIS jihadists retreat from parts of north Syria: activists" February 28, 2014 11:22 AM The Daily News BEIRUT: Radical jihadists begin withdrawing from parts of northern Syria Friday after a threat from rivals, in a bid to protect their stronghold in the east of the war-ravaged country. Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Nusra Front has threatened the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria with all-out war if it does not submit by Saturday to mediation by an Islamic court over allegations ISIS assassinated an Islamist commander with close Al-Qaeda links. Since January, ISIS has been battling a coalition of moderate and Islamist rebels angered over its abuses of rival fighters and civilians, but Al-Nusra had largely stayed out of the fray. The prospect of the powerful Al-Nusra joining forces with ISIS's opponents appears to have prompted the group to pull back to its stronghold in the eastern city of Raqqa, the only provincial capital lost by the regime in the three-year ci ...
Syria: Al-Nusra Front, Ahrar Al-Sham and Jund Al-Aziz form alliance to fight Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
Al Qaeda Disavows Rebel Group Fighting Syrian Regime Wall Street Journal (02/04/14) P. A6 Knickmeyer, Ellen In a statement posted on jihadist Web sites on Feb. 2, al-Qaida leader Ayman al Zawahiri spoke out against the fighting between rival rebel factions in Syria, saying that it is "a catastrophe for jihad in Syria" because it takes the focus away from fighting the Syrian regime. He also condemned the most aggressive jihadist group in the region, the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), and stated that ISIS is not "a branch of al-Qaida" and that the two groups have "no organizational relationship." It appears that al Zawahiri's statement was designed to rally those rebel groups fighting against ISIS in Syria. A U.S. counterterrorism official noted that the decision to break ties between al-Qaida and ISIS is rooted in a long-running dispute between al-Qaida's recognized Syria affiliate, the Nusra Front, and ISIS.
