The U.S. and Iraq are preparing for an assault by summer to retake Mosul, selecting and training military units and cutting supply lines to Islamic State militants who control Iraq’s second-largest city, the top American commander in the Middle East told the Wall Street Journal.
Read this somewhere: "Are you confused by what is going on in the Middle East? Let me explain. We support the Iraqi government in the fight against the Islamic State. We don't like IS, but IS is supported by Saudi Arabia, whom we do like. We don't like President Assad in Syria. We support the fight against him, but not IS, which is also fighting against him. We don't like Iran, but Iran supports the Iraqi government against IS. So, some of our friends support our enemies and some of our enemies are our friends and some of our enemies are fighting against our other enemies, whom we want to lose, but we don't want our enemies who are fighting our enemies to win. If the people we want to defeat are defeated, they might be replaced by people we like even less. And all this was started by us invading a country to find weapons of mass destruction and drive out terrorists who weren't actually there, until we went in to drive them out. Do you understand now?
The deadline for paying ransom for two Japanese hostagesheld by the Islamic State group was fast approaching early today with no signs of a breakthrough. Lacking clout and diplomatic reach in the Middle East, Japanhas been scrambling for a way to secure the release of the two men, one a journalist, the other an adventurer fascinated by war. Two Japanese who said they have contacts with a leader in the Islamic State group yesterday offered to try to negotiate, but it was unclear if the Japanese government was receptive to the idea. MNLF RESPONSE: THE POLITICAL ENTITY THAT BANGSAMORO WILL CREATE IN PHILIPPINES IS DEFINITELY A ISLAMIC STATE. The four elements of ISLAMIC STATE are: (1) leadership in government is a monopoly by Muslims, (2) Islam is used as the basic law that will govern the general population, (3) political geographic territory is defined yet expandable, (4) the people to be covered by Islamic governance are segregated via ascription ...

War Zones Are Still Hot But Cheap Oil Is Making Traders Complacent Back when oil traded at $115 a barrel in June, traders were talking about the fighting in places like Iraq, Ukraine and Libya as part of the reason it was so high. Fast forward seven months and while crude has faded to $50 a barrel amid a supply glut, those geopolitical risks -- along with some new ones that emerged -- remain largely intact. Islamic State militants haven’t given up the goal of a Middle East caliphate, Libya is mired in chaos, pro-Russian separatists keep skirmishing with Ukrainian forces and North Korea is fighting Hollywood. All of this has some analysts wondering if investors are setting themselves up for a nasty surprise by driving oil down so far. To Michael McCarthy, chief strategist at CMC Markets, current prices indicate investors see “almost zero risk” of a geopolitical event disrupting output. In other words, brace for a big jump if something does flare up in a key producing region. “Depending on what hits ...

The War on Terrorism is Terrorism How the US Helped Create Al Qaeda and ISIS By Garikai Chengu "ICH" - "Counterpunch" - Much like Al Qaeda, the Islamic State (ISIS) is made-in-the-USA, an instrument of terror designed to divide and conquer the oil-rich Middle East and to counter Iran’s growing influence in the region. The fact that the United States has a long and torrid history of backing terrorist groups will surprise only those who watch the news and ignore history. The CIA first aligned itself with extremist Islam during the Cold War era. Back then, America saw the world in rather simple terms: on one side, the Soviet Union and Third World nationalism, which America regarded as a Soviet tool; on the other side, Western nations and militant political Islam, which America considered an ally in the struggle against the Soviet Union. The director of the National Security Agency under Ronald Reagan, General William Odom recently remarked, “by any measure the U.S. has long used terrorism. In 1978-79 th ...

The Mystery of the Islamic State by Rachel Ehrenfeld Gen. Michael K. Nagata, commander of American Special Operations forces in the Middle East: "We do not understand the movement, and until we do, we are not going to defeat it.” Gen. Nagata admitted: “We have not defeated the idea. We do not even understand the idea.” Why not? The terrorist group’s name “ISLAMIC State” should have given at least a vague clue to understanding its ideology, Islam. “Islam does not mean peace but rather means submission to the commands of Allah alone” is constantly and adamantly repeated by all Islamists.
DECEMBER 8, 2015 Analysis From The Soufan Group IDEOLOGY OVER AFFILIATION: A WAR OF GLOBAL TERRORISM BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT • The January 7 terrorist attack on the Parisian offices of a French magazine is not only that country’s deadliest terrorist attack in several decades but also the clearest example of how the threat posed by foreign fighters and persistent conflict in the Middle East is far-reaching • The attack is the latest in what is emerging as the next stage of terrorism, in which disparate conflicts and groups—al-Qaeda or other similarly inspired groups, the names matter less now than the ideology—are merging into a panoply of small-scale/high-impact violent acts against soft targets • From Yemen to Syria, Afghanistan to Nigeria, there are far more terrorist sanctuaries and training opportunities now than there were on September 11, 2001; from a global war on terrorism, countries now face individual battles with what is increasingly a war of global terrorism • These persistent confl ...
All dear on face book Happy morning,a news for you all about killings: Sixty journalists killed in 2014, most in the Middle East Almost quarter of them worked for international press, says Committee to Protect Journalists At least 60 journalists were killed globally this year in work-related violence, with the Middle East the deadliest region, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said in a year-end report on Tuesday. The 2014 death toll marks a drop from 2013, when 70 journalists were killed, the New York-based watchdog said. The CPJ is investigating the deaths this year of at least 18 more journalists to see if they are work-related.Almost half of the journalists killed this year died in the Middle East. Syria was the deadliest country for journalists for the third year in a row, with at least 17 killed there amid a civil war.Seventy-nine journalists have been killed in Syria since fighting started in 2011, the CPJ said. The last three years were the deadliest worldwide since the CPJ began documenti ...
We have a massive problem on our hands with the increasing radicalization of disaffected young people lured by the slick advertising of the Islamic State or Al Qaeda. More attacks like that in Paris could well be the norm. The Jihadists are cloaking themselves in this hijacked version of Islam which they feel gives them the right to perpetrate any criminal act that comes to mind. We can kill numbers of ISIS followers in Iraq and Syria, but this radicalization phenomenon will continue to bolster numbers in the Middle East and in Europe and America. This is why I say that the over a billion Muslims who don't subscribe to this warped view of Islam need to speak out and condemn these criminals who are subverting the true tenets of Islam.
Read pls (24) Thanks to Nicolae. January 5, 2015. I was recently asked: Why fight Islam? The short answer is because Islam fights us and since it knows no borders and it knows no mercy, it will keep fighting us until we are defeated or we – hopefully – stop them forever. The goal in Islam is world domination and a central part of every Muslim’s religious practise is to spread his faith with all possible means until it covers the Earth completely. Ever since the 6th century when Islam’s founder and self-proclaimed prophet, Mohammed (who maybe never existed), set out to conquer neighbouring towns, killing, maiming, raping and enslaving scores, Islam has spread its suppressing and destructive doctrine as far as it could. Christian, Jewish, Hindu and Buddhist countries and cultures have been crushed by relentless waves of jihadis (Arabic: mujahideens), leaving up to 270 million non-Muslims dead, mostly killed in exceedingly barbaric ways. The recent Islamic takeover of areas in Africa, the Middle East ...
France, as part of a NATO-led coalition, has been arming, funding, aiding, and otherwise perpetuating Al Qaeda terrorists for years, beginning, on record in Libya with the overthrow of Libyan Dictator Muammar Gaddafi and continuing until today with NATO's arming, harboring, and backing of Al Qaeda terrorists including the so-called "Islamic State" (ISIS) within and along Syria's borders. With the recent attack in Paris likely the work of the very terrorists France has been arming and backing across North Africa and the Middle East, the French government itself stands responsible, guilty of the continued material support of a terrorist organization that has now killed French citizens, including two police officers, not only on French soil, but within the French capital itself. In the New York Times article, "Terror Attack on Charlie Hebdo Newspaper in Paris Kills 12," it was reported that: Masked gunmen with automatic weapons opened fire in the offices of a French satirical newspaper on Wednesday in Paris, ...
The unthinkable is happening in the Middle East. The Islamic State, also known as ISIS, has rolled through Iraq, and they are brutal beyond imagining. They've given Iraqi Christians an ultimatum: "Convert, leave, or die." They’ve marked Christian homes and businesses like the Nazis marked Jewish homes. Christians are fleeing for their lives by the tens of thousands. They’ve sought refuge in Kurdistan; but so far the Obama Administration has refused to arm the Kurds, and humanitarian aid is very slow to arrive. There’s no excuse for delay. After the Holocaust, the world promised “never again.” Never again would it stand aside and watch genocide occur. Tell the Obama Administration to take action. Arm our allies, the Kurds. Flood humanitarian aid to besieged Christians. We cannot allow genocide in Iraq.
In these days, Syria is known for political conflicts. The militants of the Islamic State have forcibly captured some of its territory. The west is crying for the installation of “so-called” democracy in the country. But is this all to know Syria? Syrian cuisine is one of the most delicious cuisines of the Middle East. Here are some photos by famous Russian journalist Anhar Kochneva.

For those who only care about themselves and their families this year may have been a good or bad based upon events in their own lives only. For those of us who are unable to separate our well being to the well being of Humanity, 2014 was an apocalyptic year. A year that has proven once more that naïve fantasies have catastrophic consequences. In 2014, the world as we know it changed decisively with the creation of the first Caliphate in the Middle East, a powerful and well organized State the size of Belgium successfully recruiting young men & women from the West and organizing from afar lone wolf attacks worldwide on a daily basis. In the meantime, Anti-Semitism has reached unseen levels since World War II and the Islamization of Europe (that was considered as a crazy fantasy) is a "Fait accomplit". ISIL cannot be contained in the Middle East. ISIL will cross all borders without difficulties. Actually, ISIL is already in Europe, in Asia, in Africa, in North, central, and South America. More blood is being shed in Nigeria’, says Pope Francis on December 25, 2014. Pope Francis issued a strident call in his Christmas day message to safeguard children who are victims “under our very eyes” of violence and trafficking, while also demanding an end to “brutal persecution” worldwide. Killings and hostage-takings from the Middle East to Nigeria and elsewhere must stop, he said in his annual Christmas “urbi et orbi” (to the city and the world) message. FILE PHOTO: The scene of the attack… Denouncing conflicts in Ukraine and Libya, and noting last week’s deadly attack against a school in Pakistan, the pontiff also lamented the thousands of victims of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. “Truly there are so many tears this Christmas,” he said. Delivering his second Christmas blessing, the popular Argentine pontiff, visibly moved and departing from his text, noted “the children massacred by bombardments, including where the son of God was born” and their “powerless sil ...

Commentary: West responsible for turmoil, surge of terrorism in Mideast By Liu Chang Xinhua News Agency December 22, 2014 CAIRO: For a century, the Middle East has been a deeply troubled region, and it has never been truer than it is this year when a group of extremely ferocious terrorists formally established their caliphate of Islamic State (IS) in parts of Iraq and Syria, showing the world how brutal and uncivilized it can be. Reviewing the incubation of the IS, the West is held accountable for renewed surge of terrorism in the area. It is noted that one of the goals of the IS is to reverse the effects of the Sykes-Picot Agreement, a deal the European powers secretly reached in 1916 during World War I. It allowed them to freely set state borders within their respective spheres of influence and control in the Middle East. These arbitrary borders, designed to keep the Arab nations divided and weak, have caused numerous conflicts over the last few decades. However, the Western powers seem to have barely c ...

Is Obama ready for an about-face to recognize Assad? Will Syria provide the strike force against ISIS? DEBKAfile Exclusive Report December 14, 2014, 7:46 PM (GMT+02:00) High expectations based on unconfirmed reports swirled around Arab capitals Sunday, Dec. 14, that US President Barack Obama, in league with Moscow and Tehran, had turned his longstanding anti-Assad policy on its head. He was said to be willing to accept Bashar Assad’s rule and deem the Syrian army the backbone of the coalition force battling the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant. If these expectations are borne out by the Obama Administration, the Middle East would face another strategic upheaval: The US and Russia would be on the same side, a step toward mending the fences between them after the profound rupture over Ukraine, and the Washington-Tehran rapprochement would be expanded. The Lebanese Hizballah and its leader, Hassan Nasrallah would be vindicated in the key role they played in buttressing President Assad in power. But for ...

Jabhat Al-Nusra, or the Al-Nusra Front, have since their formation in January 2012 established themselves as one of the most fearsome groups fighting the forces of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. Unlike their now more famous fellow travellers in the Islamic State, the Al-Nusra Front still claims to derive its authority from Ayman al-Zawahiri, leader of al-Qaeda. Middle East Eye's reporter travelled to Orchard Palace in Aleppo, to capture exclusive footage of the al-Nusra Front in action, still fighting to bring down the House of Assad and establish an islamic state in the country.

Somali “refugees” on lifetime welfare demand their free food adhere to Islamic Law by Jason DeWitt Whoever said “beggars can’t be choosers” never met Somali Muslim refugees in Minnesota . These Muslim imports in Minneapolis are now demanding a tax-funded “halal” non-pork food shelf at a free food pantry for the poor. As if it’s not bad enough that nearly all the “American” Muslims who have joined ISIS have been Somalis from Minneapolis, their relatives here are demanding that Americans adhere to the same Sharia Laws the Islamic State fighters are trying to impose throughout the Middle East. A group of first-generation Somali Americans says they need help in developing a food shelf that specializes in healthy foods that do not contain pork or pork byproducts. “It’s about Human Rights also, basic Human Rights to get the proper food and also healthy food,” said Imam Hassan Mohamud. “Human Rights”? Seriously? Their arrogance and self-entitlement has to be unprecedented for a grou ...

How the Islamic State (ISIL) Threatens the West - Lt. Col. (ret.) Jonathan D. Halevi (Institute for Contemporary Affairs-Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs) •The war in the Levant is not a political or territorial conflict that can be resolved by negotiations and compromise. The Islamic State leaves no doubt as to its determination to relentlessly conduct jihad to spread the rule of Islam and the word of Allah, first in the Middle East and later in Europe and North America. •The cornerstone of the Islamic State's publicly reiterated strategic goal is to conquer Rome, the capital of Italy and home of the Vatican, in order to strike the symbol of Christianity. Spain is portrayed as a formerly Islamic occupied country, as are other parts of Europe, and all must be liberated. This is not a far-fetched, harmless fantasy; it is an actual plan of action.

« Breaking News » ISIS sets up training camps in E. Libya next door to Egypt DEBKAfile December 4, 2014, 9:20 PM (IDT) The US military is closely monitoring the training camps the Islamic State has set up in the east Libyan town of Derna, but US Gen. David Rodriguez, head of the Africa Command, said Thursday that the camps are still “very small and nascent.” He ruled out military action. At the same time, experts warn that a number of local factions in Derna have pledged loyalty to ISIS and warn that the Islamists have gained a foothold there. DEBKAfile adds: While the US general tried to play down this development, the new ISIS presence in North Africa has grave ramifications for neighboring Egypt and Israel to the northeast, especially since the Islamist Ansar Beit al-Maqdis of Sinai pledged allegiance to ISIS. Since Qaddafi’s fall, East Libya has been a primary source of illicit arms, which reach the Gaza Strip and other Middle East destinations via the smuggling routes of Sinai.

Nigeria’s ranking on Global Terrorism Index NIGERIA RANKED 4TH IN THE WORLD. WHAT A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT FOR THE COUNTRY...Paffcomm Nigeria, last week, emerged 4th on the 2013 Global Terrorism Index. In plain language, Nigeria was the 4th worst affected country with regard to incidents of terrorism, last year. In the global study by the London-based Institute for Economics and Peace, it was little surprise that Nigeria ranked behind Afghanistan and Pakistan, that came first and second respectively, while Iraq, which had 2,492 terrorist attacks that killed 6,300 people, came third. Syria, now in the throes of a devastating civil war, was ranked 15th after Nigeria. It was equally understandable that the number of people killed in terrorism attacks rose 60 per cent in 2013 to over 18,000. That figure is expected to go even higher in 2014 due to the obvious escalation of terrorism in the Middle East and Nigeria. The Institute stated that there were 303 terrorist attacks in Nigeria in 2013 with 1,826 fatalit .. ...

In Conversation The Rise of ISIS and the Origins of the New Middle East War by Tariq Ali and Patrick Cockburn Tariq Ali: I’m in conversation with Patrick Cockburn, who can only be described as a veteran reporter and courageous journalist who has covered the wars of the United States in the Middle East since they began with the invasion of Iraq, and was reporting from the region a long time before on the sanctions against Iraq, the Gulf Wars. We’re now at a critical stage where a new organisation has emerged. Patrick has written a new book, The Jihadis Return, which is an extended essay on the emergence of ISIS and its links to the Sunni population in Iraq and the likely consequences of this for the region. Because there’s absolutely no doubt that what this opens up is yet another front in the unending war that has become a total misery for the people who live in the Arab world today. Patrick, let’s begin by sort of inquiring about the origins of the Islamic State group, ISIS as they call themselv ...

For nine years this former Middle East envoy for the Archbishop of Canterbury, who has played a key role in freeing hostages in the region, has been the vicar of St George's church in Baghdad. As such, he has been the emblem and body-armoured defender of Iraq's Christian community, which has been under murderous assault in the wars that have engulfed Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein. A few days ago, at a conference I chaired in Jerusalem, Canon White told me that the Archbishop of Canterbury has now forbidden him to return to his church in its heavily barricaded compound. Given the advance towards Baghdad of Islamic State (Isis) - which has now murdered a fifth hostage, the American Peter Kassig - it is simp ...

In an audio message purportedly from terrorist leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, claims that the so-called Islamic State is in the best condition and that it will not stop its land grabs. The recording reportedly seeks to dispel speculation that Baghdadi was seriously injured or killed in an airstrike in Iraq. However there is no mention of the incident. More than a hundred Muslim scholars have denounced the actions of ISIS who has been waging an assault on the people of Iraq and Syria. They describe the terrorist group’s interpretation of Islam as illegitimate and perverse.
The United States is heading toward a catastrophe on several levels if it pairs with Iran to fight against the threat of the Islamic State (ISIS), Middle East expert and best-selling author Dr. Walid Phares told Newsmax TV Thursday.
The US Empire is far from democratic. It is authoritarian! It is imperialist! It is unjust! And a revolution is needed. Western imperialism has spent the better part of five hundred years trying to impose Western values on peoples throughout the world. These peoples have never had a meaningful voice in the political, social and economic policies that have been imposed on them. Imperialism, by definition, is undemocratic. While the policies of the US government impact billions of people around the world, only a tiny percentage of the global population have any say in electing that government. And the overwhelming majority of the 121 million Americans who vote give little thought to how their ballot will impact Muslims in the Middle East, indigenous peoples in Latin America, and billions of others throughout Africa and Asia. Their voting decisions are primarily determined by their perceived immediate needs, which provides a veneer of legitimacy not only to US democracy but also to US imperialism. Consequent ...

KERRY DENIES + On the sidelines of the APEC summit in Beijing, John Kerry says there is no link between talks on Iran's nuclear program and other issues in the Middle East. The Wall Street Journal reported that Obama sent a letter to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamanei, describing their shared interests regarding Islamic State. "There is no linkage whatsoever of the nuclear discussions with any other issue, and I want to make that absolutely clear." "No one to my knowledge has confirmed or denied whether or not there is a letter or was a letter, and I'm not going to comment on what a president of the United States and the leader of another country may or may not communicate, may or may not communicate, privately."
HAPPY WEEKEND READING. Saudi Arabia Must Contain Yet Another Religious Sect Generally, Sunni attacks against Shia are fairly common throughout the Middle East and South Asia, especially now during the holy month of Muharram. But that is not the case in Saudi Arabia, where sectarian violence typically takes place between state security forces and unruly Shia. If non-state Salafist actors are now attacking Shia, it means Riyadh could be burdened with yet another violent group to contain. Saudi leaders are trying to contain the Shia community to temper the rise of Iran and its Arab Shia allies in Iraq, Lebanon, Bahrain and, more recently, Yemen. Sentencing al-Nimr to death was a key part of Riyadh’s strategy toward this end, and the Saudis have been bracing for backlash as Shia across the region, particularly Iran, have reacted against the kingdom, warning it of dire consequences. The last thing Riyadh needs is non-state Salafist elements clashing with the Shia, undermining the efforts of the state and fur ...

Trenin concurs with my view - just says it better than I have. A warning regarding the situation caused by NATO expansion: Global Times November 4, 2014 West and Russia now in permanent crisis By Dmitri Trenin The author is director of the Carnegie Moscow Center. Economic sanctions work both ways. Russia, the object of the latest round of sanctions, evidently suffers from its recent exclusion from Western financial markets, new restrictions on the transfer of technology and the drying up of foreign investment. The EU, which has imposed sanctions on Russia alongside the US, Japan, Canada and Australia, has also incurred losses, both from the fall in its industrial exports to Russia, and from Russia's counter-ban on importing European agricultural products. The US and Russia share a common threat in the Islamic State. It is easy to see that the only beneficiaries from the lack of cooperation and coordination between Russia and the West in the Middle East are local extremists, who, for the ...

Robert Cutler has a very good understanding of the Historical undercurrent that sets the stage for the conflict unfolding in the Middle East along the Syrian-Iraq border. But he is wrong, however, to criticize and refute Glenn Greenwald’s claim that the killings of the two Canadian servicemen were as a result of our involvement in Afghanistan and now the new mission against the Islamic State in Iraq.Mr. Cutler says Greenwald propagates the U.S. myth that the terrorist violence in our midst is the result of our own misdeeds, and that our Canadian national character, which keeps us open to self-criticism, is misplaced; for our self-blame dehumanizes the terrorist, equating him or her with Rousseau’s “noble savage”, instead of giving them their proper place in the age-old religious struggle between the two major Muslim sects, the Shia and the Sunni. Am I suppose to care? Two innocent Canadian servicemen were killed by misguided psychopaths under the influence of Radical Islamists. What I do know is, ...
Syrian Kurds welcome agreement on Duhok understanding President Massoud Barzani and Rojava leaders were set to redraw the map of the Middle East last night with the imminent declaration of a self-governing region inside Syria. Once deeply divided, the leaders held a critical meeting in Dohuk, hoping to unify behind a new political entity in three territories in Syria. Factions who took control in 2012 of three “cantons” Cizire, Efrin and Kobani — efter ninth day of talks today aimed at establishing a semi-autonomous Kurdish region, to be called Rojava. Representatives of the main Syrian Kurdish faction, the Democratic Union party (PYD), said that the announcement of a formal entity would be followed by elections for a regional parliament and the formation of defence forces. The territory held by the Kurds is far stable: Syrian Kurds are currently embroiled in a lengthy and bloody battle against Islamic State (Isis) militants for control of the town of Kobani. Can Killer Ebola Unite Humanity? by Grand Master Adnan Oktar As the world continues to grapple with new problems arising every new day in the Middle East and ponder a feasible solution for Syria and Iraq, especially with regards to the threat of the so-called Islamic State (IS), another tragedy is unfolding in West Africa that has left the world baffled. After crippling two countries and threatening the third one — Nigeria — Ebola is moving fast across continents. The world media also appears confused as now there are two powerful contenders to qualify for breaking news: Explosions in Iraq or Syria, turmoil in Lebanon and the fast increasing number of Ebola victims. Unfortunately, the world did not pay much attention to the virus in its early stages. After all, it was just confined to that abandoned continent, which had always been exploited by the powers that be every now and then. Ebola is a dangerous contagious virus and its cure remains elusive. At the onset of the breakout of Ebola in West Afric ...
Islamic State: The US volunteers who fight with Syria's Kurds
The Kurds, who are currently on the front lines fighting ISIS, put together this little jingle to mock ISIS for their ignorance and extremism on Kurdish TV. Hilarious! We stand with the Kurdish people, who are undoubtedly fighting a hideous evil in the Middle East, and we support their aspirations for an independent state. May they be strong and successful in this fight against the barbaric Islamic State. The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI)

Is Islam really a religion of peace? Islamic State justified kidnapping women as sex slaves in the new issue of their online magazine. They said that it is a “firmly established aspect of Shariah” and anyone who denies this is denying the Koran. These are the militants who are currently terrorizing innocent Iraqis right now and advancing throughout the Middle East. Does this sound peaceful to you?
"US Secretary of State John Kerry has stirred a hornet's nest in Israel from leading right wing politicians who accuse him of racism and not understanding the Middle East after comments he recently made. He came under fire from right-wing Israeli politicians Friday after saying that the Israeli Palestinian conflict was fueling the spread of Islamic terror in the Middle East. Speaking at an event marking the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha at the State Department Thursday, Kerry said it was "imperative" to restart stalled Israeli-Palestinian talks, since the conflict was helping the Islamic State recruit new members."
Patriarchs believe Islamic State has no future in the Middle East
I saw some Kurdish activists today, who were protesting against ISIS in the city centre of Manchester, on my way back from Liverpool. The Kurds are some of the bravest people I have ever met: Surely there must be a Kurdish state now. They have been denied a state in the past, and it is only fair that in recognition of the suffering of the Kurdish people, and the bravery and sacrifices they are making to fight the Islamic State, that an Independent Kurdish State should be established in the Middle East, encompassing Syrian and Iraqi Kurdistan. I am going to write to my MEP about this and see what the European Parliament can do to support the Kurds and their desire for statehood.

The Caliphate Attempted The Ottomans, which ruled the Middle East and some parts of Europe for 6 centuries, finally wipe out from the map of the world in 1923. In his first speech after the attacks of september 11, 2001, osama Bin Laden provided a list of grievances that in his mind compelled and justified Islamist terrorism against the West. Among other things, he alluded to the West’s role in dethroning the last Ottoman caliph and abolishing the Ottoman Caliphate. Ever since March 4, 1924, when Caliph Abdul Mejid II was sent packing by Turkish nationalists, not by European, many Islamists have maintained that resurrecting the caliphate would allow them to roll back centuries of Western encroachment upon Islamic lands, and to recapture Islam’s early purpose, might, and glory. However, early efforts at reestablishing the caliphate after the fall of the Ottomans routinely failed the victim of doctrinal disagreements and other political obstacles created by Muslim disunity and weakness. Subsequently, .. ...
Turkey allows US-led coalition to use its bases in fight against Islamic State
The world’s going crazy!  Have you noticed?  In all my life I have never seen the world in this kind of mess: from war in Ukraine to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa (scientists are warning that the Ebola virus is likely to reach Europe and Britain in the next three weeks).  Cold War tensions are rising between Russia and the West; there’s civil war in Syria; simmering tensions continue between Palestine and Israel, Pakistan and India, North and South Korea and China & Japan; and, probably the most concerning of all, is the rise of Islamic State. Just this morning I received this message from a friend who pastors a church in Turkey: “Anti-ISIS demonstrations and provocations by Kurdish groups all over Turkey turned violent today. The demonstrations were broken up by Turkish police in full riot gear using tear gas, pepper gas, pressurized water canons with acid water, etc. One reported dead and many injured and detained. Already martial law declared in some cities.  One of our evangelism outreac ...
Of the world's 192 countries, 121 are electoral democracies. However, only 11 of the 47 nations (23 percent) with an Islamic majority have democratically elected governments. In the non-Islamic world, which comprises 145 states, 110 are electoral democracies (75 percent). Therefore, a non-Islamic state is over three times more likely to be democratic than an Islamic state. None of the 16 Arab states of the Middle East and North Africa is a democracy.

PLEASE CIRCULATE: Kurdish Studies Scholars’ Statement of Solidarity and Call for Action to Support Kobani The humanitarian crisis caused by the Islamic State (IS) continues to terrorize and displace hundreds of thousands of people in the Middle East. The autonomous canton of Kobani is now bearing the brunt of the IS’s attacks as the international community has mostly been watching. The city has been under siege for three weeks. Despite fierce resistance by the defenders of the town, the advance of the IS forces towards Kobani is threatening to set off another massacre similar to that of Shengal. As scholars working on issues related to the Kurds and other peoples of Kurdistan, we are profoundly concerned about yet another imminent humanitarian crisis and stand in solidarity with the people of Kobani. We urgently call on the coalition forces against the IS and the broader international community to take immediate action to prevent an impending disaster by supporting the Kurds in their fight for self-de ...

Just spoke in the councel of Europe about Neo Nazism. My speech: The report shows that there is great concern about the emergence of neo-nazism, which poses a problem to the whole of Europe. My party shares this concern. The swastika that sympathisers of the Islamic State carried with them in a demonstration in the streets in The Hague, not far from the Houses of Parliament, was confronting. It was equally confronting that the demonstrators threatened a female journalist to rip off her clothes. The report makes mention of various groups that fall within the category of neo-nazism, but ignores the cooperation between Islam and Nazi Germany. This cooperation was initiated by al-Husaini, the Mufti of Jerusalem and leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in the past. Al-Husaini was an admirer of Hitler. Both men shared a common goal: the annihilation of the Jewish people. Al-Husaini opposed to the emigration of Jews to modern-day Israel, which was discontinued, partly by his doing. He encouraged Hitler in the total ...
Prescott, who was Blair's deputy from 1997 to 2007, urged "all parties to think again" saying too much Arab and British blood had already been shed in Iraq and Afghanistan. In his regular Sunday Mirror newspaper column, Prescott writes: "Cameron says we shouldn't be 'frozen by fear' by what happened 11 years ago. But yet again we are being led by the US. This is not our or their war. So here we are again. Parliament backs British military action in the Middle East and we're bombing by the weekend. This time the enemy is not the Taliban or Saddam Hussein. The latest 'threat to Britain' is Islamic State. It is a regional religious dispute that we should leave to the Arab nations.Bombing is never clinical. From Dresden to Gaza, innocent people are often chalked up as 'collateral damage'. Do we as a country really want to be responsible for that again?"

ISIS controls a vast swathe of territory across Iraq and Syria. And its influence reaches well beyond the Middle East. On Tuesday night, a Melbourne teenager was shot dead after stabbing two police officers who wanted to question him over alleged threats against the Prime Minister and, last week, counter terrorism police conducted the biggest ever raids in Australia, after intercepting plans of a local ISIS member to kidnap and publicly behead a random victim. Debunking the myths about the extremists’ rise. - Greg Sheridan, The Australian, September 24th, 2014. As the bombing of Islamic State forces in Syria begins, the Abbott government has left open the possibility of future actions by Australia in Syria. Given every invitation to rule it out, Tony Abbott refuses to do so. My guess is that Australian action in Syria is more likely to take place than not, over time. In the meantime, the Australian debate is bedevilled by three truly ludicrous myths peddled variously and in different combinations, by Greens, lefties, professional anti-Americans, and that great undifferentiated and largely uninformed cadre of general commentators on everything who figure so ubiquitously, and so repetitively, on the ABC. The myths are: 1/. That the rise of Islamic State in Iraq is a consequence of the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq; 2/. That recent US counter-terrorist activities and aggressive actions in the Middle East have spurred the terrorist threat on; and 3/. That Israel r ...

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war and later annexed the strategic area in a move that has never been internationally recognized. While relations are hostile, the ruling Assad family in Syria has kept the border area with Israel quiet for most of the past 40 years. Israel is concerned that Assad's ouster could push the country into the hands of Islamic State extremists or other al-Qaida linked militants, or plunge the region further into sectarian warfare. But as Syria has plunged into civil war and the peacekeepers themselves have become targets of al-Qaeda-linked rebels, the UN observer force has begun to fall apart, leaving its future — and the prospects for ever establishing peace in this rugged area of the Middle East — in doubt. Australia raids foil reported ISIS beheading plots Published September 18, 2014 Australian counterterrorism forces detained 15 people Thursday in a series of suburban raids after receiving intelligence that the Islamic State militant group was planning public beheadings in two Australian cities to demonstrate its reach. About 800 federal and state police officers raided more than a dozen properties across 12 Sydney suburbs as part of the operation -- the largest in Australian history, Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Andrew Colvin told the Associated Press. A sword was removed as part of evidence at one of the homes. Separate raids in the eastern cities of Brisbane and Logan were also conducted. On the eve of Sept. 11, President Barack Obama on Wednesday made a prime-time plea for Americans to support an open-ended war on the brutal fighters of the Islamic State — an escalating Middle East campaign with ill-defined conditions for victory and a timetable that will likely take it into his successor’s term. Obama made certain to distinguish his approach from his predecessor’s large-scale invasions and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq. He promised that there will be no American ground troops taking the fight to the terrorist group also known as ISIL or ISIS.

Why is it getting difficult to defeat the Islamic State fighters: After their lightning takeover in June, flag-waving Islamic State militants paraded through the captured Iraqi city of Mosul in looted US-built Humvees, armored cars and pickup trucks mounted with heavy machine guns. Today, many have ditched military-type vehicles that could make them easy targets of US air strikes, and try to blend in with residents, say witnesses. While still terrifying, they are now a far more discreet force. A Reuters examination of three weeks of US air strikes reveals significant changes in the way the Islamic State operates since the US joined the struggle against them, with fewer militants on the streets of Mosul the clearest sign. It is unclear how the Islamic State's tactics will further change as a result of the reclaiming of the strategic Mosul Dam by Iraqi government and Kurdish forces or Sunday's dramatic retaking of Amerli, where thousands had been cut off from food and water, but clearly battlefield strategi ...

Qatar's role as US ally at odds with claims it sponsors terror Published August 30, 2014 If the Middle East were one big room, Qatar would be the elephant, according to a growing number of regional experts who believe the oil rich emirate is propping up violent jihadists around the globe even as it poses as a U.S. ally and would-be broker of peace. Israel has long complained of Qatar's alleged duplicity, accusing it of meddling, bankrolling Hamas in Gaza, exporting radical Islamic terrorism through its tight links to the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Nusra. And a German official recently suggested that Qatar may also play a role in funding Islamic State, the savage extremist group behind the beheading of U.S. journalist James Foley. "You have to ask who is arming, who is financing ISIS troops? The key word there is Qatar - and how do we deal with these people and states politically?" German Development Minister Gerd Muller said last week. In response, Qatari Foreign Minister Khalid bin Mohammed al ...
The UK terror threat has been raised from substantial to severe. Please note that David Cameron chooses the name ISIL- why not ISIS or Islamic State, as most of us call it? First, if you choose to refer to this group as ISIL, you have basically rewritten the map of the Middle East and fallen into the trap of not recognizing the existence of Israel and also Lebanon. If you use ISIL you are then validating the Islamic totalitarian and jihadist claim that the modern day Jewish State of Israel is an occupation state and does not exist in the eyes of Muslims.
President Barack Obama on Thursday acknowledged the difficulty facing the United States as it grapples with the growing threat of Islamic State militants in the Middle East, saying that
21-year-old, Areeb Majid who had reportedly joined the Islamic State militant group in Syria has died in clashes. according to his associates. Satan has been unleashed in the world. Or, if you are an atheist or secular and uncomfortable with theological imagery: Dr. Frankenstein’s monster has escaped the laboratory and is rampaging across the landscape. The most recent atrocities committed by the Islamic State — notably, the beheading of an American journalist by an ISIS mujahid on video, as a warning to President Obama (see Fox News, CNN, and the Mail Online) — demonstrate that something unprecedented is at work in the Middle East. Not since the defeat of the Ottoman army in 1683 has barbarity of this magnitude gone unchecked in the region. Actually, you’d have to go back farther than 1683, or even 1453, to find comparable events. During its entire suzerainty over Mesopotamia, the Ottoman Empire did not engage in the systematic demolition of Shiite mosques. But that is exactly what ISIS is doing, even as it massacres and enslaves Christians and Yezidis. This is a moment of enormous historical import. The proclamation of a Caliphate by t ...

New post: "Reporter held by Islamic State has passion for Middle East"
Parents of James Foley, who was beheaded by an ISIS member, recall his passion for journalism, call him ‘martyr for freedom’ A teary Diane Foley recalled her son’s 39th birthday party in October 2012, when she urged him to rethink his return to the war-torn Middle East. The worried mom knew it was the one request that freelance journalist James Foley would not — could not — accommodate. And she completely understood why. “James felt compelled to bear witness to people in conflict,” Foley told reporters during an emotional hourlong news conference outside their New Hampshire home. “He died for that compassion and love,” she said. “We want him to be remembered as a compassionate individual.” James Foley, 40, was beheaded by merciless members of the Islamic State, or ISIS, nearly two years after his Nov. 22, 2012, capture by terrorists in Syria. “We believe he was a martyr — a martyr for freedom,” his father John said Wednesday. “I’m sure he didn’t shrink from the situation. ...
