In order to get a decent oral understanding of an European language, I need to listen to a dozen of audio books at least. For English and German, there is a lot available on the market. For Spanish, there is a collection edited by the university of Salamanca. The books in this collection are graded by difficulty and the price is about that of a CD. For Italian, I could not find many. On Amazon, I found only one and I bought the last copy! Hopefully, I’ll get it around the end of this month, as it is shipped from Italy, it normally takes about a month for delivery. The book is “The house of the spirits” by Isabel Allende. It is interesting that the book was translated from Spanish to many other languages. As I intend to brush up my Spanish, I got the Spanish edition, I got also the French edition to help me out if I should run into difficulties. I have also the English edition but I don’t think that it will help me much. Unfortunately, I could not find the audio book in Spanish. Usually I read the ...

RIP Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Whether you agree with the Washington Post -- that he was "widely considered the most popular Spanish-language writer since Miguel de Cervantes" -- he was unquestionably a giant. (The sad truth is that he was probably less popular than writers who wrote a watered-down version of what he pioneered: Isabel Allende, in particular.)
