Sports Main article: Sport in Ireland See also: List of Irish sports people The island of Ireland fields a single international team in most sports. One notable exception to this is Association football, although both associations continued to field international teams under the name "Ireland" until the 1950s. An all-Ireland club competition for soccer, the Setanta Cup, was created in 2005. Gaelic football is the most popular sport in Ireland in terms of match attendance and community involvement, with about 2,600 clubs on the island. In 2003 it represented 34% of total sports attendances at events in Ireland and abroad, followed by hurling at 23%, soccer at 16% and rugby at 8%[154] and the All-Ireland Football Final is the most watched event in the sporting calendar.[155] Soccer is the most widely played team game on the island, and the most popular in Northern Ireland.[154][156] Swimming, golf, aerobics, soccer, cycling, Gaelic football and billiards/snooker are the sporting activities with the highest ...

DID YOU KNOW ? • The Union Jack was first flown not in England but over Dublin, on January 1, 1801, to celebrate the Act of Union? The Irish Rugby Football Union were so attached to it that they flew the Union Jack and not the tricolour at all matches until 1932, when the President of the Executive Council, William T Cosgrave, intervened. • The bugle blown to launch the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade was sold by McNeill's music shop of Capel Street? • One-third to one-half of the American troops who fought during the Revolutionary War were Irish or of Irish descent? One traditional Irish cure for a hangover was to be buried up to the neck in moist river sand? • The Turkish Delight chocolate was first made in Cobh, County Cork, by the Hadji Bey company in the 1890s? • The Lough Erne Cot is the only boat in the world to be annually sunk? It is traditionally scuttled during the winter months in order to preserve the wood. • The oldest recorded vampire story comes from Ireland? • The crypt ...
WARNS OF DANGERS OF CONCUSSION AND DISPELS MYTH OF A 'KNOCK TO THE HEAD' For Immediate Release NEW GUIDE TO EDUCATE PLAYERS, COACHES, OFFICIALS & PARENTS ON DANGERS OF CONCUSSION AND HOW TO RECOGNISE IT STOP – INFORM – REST – RETURN The Irish Rugby Football Union, in conjunction with Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster Rugby today (9th Dec) launched a new concussion guide to educate those playing, supporting or officiating rugby on how to recognise the signs and symptoms of concussion as it warned that ignoring symptoms and continuing to train or play can in rare instances be fatal. A Guide to Concussion in Rugby Union outlines four simple, important, messages: 1. Stop – A player with a suspected concussion must be removed immediately and must not return to the field. 2. Inform – A player with suspected concussion should report it to a team medic, coach, teammate, friend or family member and be properly assessed and managed. They must not be left alone or drive a vehicle. 3. Rest – A play . ...
Irish schedule for November, 2014 06th December 2013 15:28 Share: Meet again: Ireland and Australia Related links Teams Australia Ireland Also see Sherry knee blow Brown wary of Ratuvou Loan move for Tait? Ireland will face South Africa and Australia in next year's November international Test series, the Irish Rugby Football Union announced. Joe Schmidt's side will meet South Africa, the world's second-ranked side behind New Zealand, at the Aviva Stadium on November 8 and will face Australia at the same venue on November 22. In between, they'll play a "leading European Tier 2 nation", most probably Georgia, on November 15. Ireland had a mixed experience in this year's November Tests, comfortably beating Samoa 40-9 but losing 32-15 to Australia and then going down to a painful 24-22 loss to New Zealand.
ALL-BLACK SUNDAY - race report from Cormac Bradley with apologies for delayed posting... Rugby influences the fleet size………and breaks Irish hearts! Yesterday’s Frostbite race produced a fleet that had all the appearance of being adversely influenced by the Ireland – New Zealand rugby fixture taking place a short distance away with kick-off very close to the scheduled start of Frostbite racing. How the Irish Rugby Football Union could negotiate a fixture with the No.1 rugby side in the World without reference to the Frostbite organizers I don’t know!! Eight Fireballs contested yesterday’s race and seven of those were fighting to be the boat closest to the committee boat at the start. The exception to that skirmish was Messrs Butler & Kinsella (14990) who would have been pleased to have had the pin to themselves, even though they were distinctly late for the start. Neil Colin and Margaret Casey (14775) won the battle to be on the starboard end of the line and then proceeded to the LHS of the b ...

REPORT OF BEIRUT SELECT v IRISH UNIFIL GAME Beirut Select lose to Unifil Irish Batt 108 INFBN – 13 : 7 in the “Friendship Cup” On Saturday the 2nd of November, a Beirut Select team played against the Unfil Irish Batt ,a friendly but competitive and highly spirited rugby match at the Lebanese University in Hadath. This match also gave the Irish Batt a chance to bid fare well to Beirut before their return to Ireland. Both teams had big forwards with the Irish edging the Beirut Select team with experience (due to the absence of 7 players from the Beirut Select team on National Team at the west Asian 7’s in Dubai). It took 15 minutes before the Irish team were awarded a penalty by Irish referee Olan McCarthy, due to continuous off side by the Beirut Select keen and young back row. Within 5 minutes After successfully converting the penalty, the Irish were awarded another penalty which was again successfully taken. However, with 5 minutes to go to half time, a break by the Beirut Select backs ended up a ...

There is something that I want to understand with regard to Ireland (country). In terms of sovereignty there is Republic of Ireland, an independent state, and there is Northern Ireland, which (together with Wale, Scotland & England) form part of UK. In soccer Northern Ireland is a FIFA member individual and Republic of Ireland is also a FIFA member individually, because all of UK's constituent "provinces" are members of FIFA in their individual capacity. But in terms of rugby, the Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland are one country with one Rugby Union, Irish Rugby Football Union. How can two countries, one sovereign, one autonomous state of a different country, be one national team? It would have made sense if it was Northern Ireland and England forming one rugby team, coz both are part of UK.

Ireland Under-20s Bid To Keep Up Athlone Record (Irish Rugby Football Union) (Source: Irish Rugby Football Union) The Ireland Under-20s have a wonderful record at Dubarry Park over the past six seasons and a new-look squad is bidding to build on the recent highest ever finish in the IRB Junior World Championship that included wins over England and South Africa. Captain Luke McGrath, Stuart Olding and Josh van der Flier are the only survivors from that competition in South Africa last summer. Nevertheless, an inexperienced Ireland again defeated Six Nations champions England 16-15 in a thrilling finish in front of a record crowd at last month's Dubarry Park duel. Mike Ruddock's youngsters showed great resolve and wonderful spirit in that encounter and worked... ~SportsMan

Congrats to Heaslip on Irish captaincy, but very disappointed with the way Declan Kidney and the Irish Rugby Football Union handled the announcement. Terrible way to treat one of (if not 'the') greatest Irish rugby player & captain we've ever seen in pro era. Excuse of RWC in 2015 not plausible as still full 2 years of games after this campaign. If fit, I sincerely hope this isn't an excuse not to select him at 13.So, will all the 6N publicity material and TV campaigns now be re-printed/ re-recorded??
