It is a huge blow for the tourists, who lose a priceless source of on-field leadership. O’Connell was set to feature in his eighth straight Lions test, but instead will watch from the stands. There is no plan to call up a replacement at this stage. Geoff Parling has been stood down from the Rebels match and is likely to take O’Connell’s place in the test side – Ian Evans comes into the line-up for Tuesday, with Tom Croft onto the bench. In a move that surprised the rugby world, veteran Welsh winger Shane Williams has been added to the British and Irish Lions squad. The 36 year old former World Player of the Year was due to work as a radio pundit an the 1st test against Australia this weekend but has changed his plans after receiving the call up. Lions coach Warren Gatland confirmed that Williams will play against the ACT Brumbies on Tuesday then leave the camp on Wednesday. Best of the Weekend: Lions tested, England cruise Posted on Jun 10, 2013 Lions battle to hard-fought victory in Queensland On a jam-packed weekend of international rugby, you could be forgiven for missing the odd fixture here or there, but if there was one game that should have been set in stone in your diary, it was the Queensland Reds playing host to the British and Irish Lions. Though the Lions eventually won 22-12, the game was anything but plain sailing, and gave Warren Gatland’s squad exactly the kind of test they needed if they are to be prepared for the Wallabies in just under two weeks’ time.
