Irish Lions & Heineken Cup
The Heineken Cup (known as the H Cup in France due to restrictions on alcohol sponsorship) is one of two annual rugby union competitions organised by European Rugby Cup involving leading club, regional and provincial teams from the six International Rugby Board (IRB) countries in Europe whose national teams compete in the Six Nations Championship: England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. /5

Lock Ian Evans will miss Wales' Six Nations defence after being banned for 12 weeks for stamping. Evans, 29, was dismissed by referee Romain Poite during Ospreys' 36-3 Heineken Cup defeat by Leinster after stamping on opponent Mike McCarthy. The British and Irish Lions player pleaded guilty before a disciplinary hearing in Dublin on Thursday. Entry-level suspensions for stamping range from two to nine-plus weeks, with 52 weeks the maximum. It is another blow for Wales coach Warren Gatland, who is already without injured forward Ryan Jones and may not have captain Sam Warburton fit for their opening match against Italy on 1 February.
Leigh Halfpenny will leave Cardiff Blues in the summer to join Heineken Cup champions Toulon. The 25-year-old, who kicked Wales to the successful defence of their Six Nations crown and the British and Irish Lions to an historic series win in Australia, had been courted by several big-spending clubs…
UNION- Defence coach Shaun Edwards says wing Alex Cuthbert could make a shock return to the Wales side to face Australia on Sunday. The British and Irish Lions wing had been expected to miss the whole of the autumn series with an ankle injury picked up playing for Cardiff Blues in the Heineken Cup in October. "Fingers crossed he could potentially maybe be fit," said Edwards.
Wales Squad for Autumn Internationals October 22, 2013 Wales boss Warren Gatland has named three uncapped players in a 35-man squad for next month’s Tests against South Africa, Argentina, Tonga and Australia. Ospreys wing Eli Walker, Cardiff Blues centre Cory Allen and Scarlets scrum-half Rhodri Williams have all been selected. But there are no places for injured British and Irish Lions backs Jamie Roberts and Alex Cuthbert or Blues captain Matthew Rees. Racing Metro centre Roberts is recovering from an ankle injury, while Blues wing Cuthbert suffered an ankle problem during last weekend’s Heineken Cup victory over European champions Toulon. The Blues have today announced Rees will be out of the game for an enforced period after undergoing testicular surgery. Perpignan back James Hook, who last started for Wales against another Test-playing country two years ago, has made the squad, which is based largely on last season’s RBS 6 Nations title-winning group. There is also a place for scrum-half Mike P ...
RUGBY UNION- Wales coach Warren Gatland warns that English and French clubs' attempts to set up a breakaway tournament from the Heineken Cup will fail. The Rugby Champions Cup, due to start next season, is a result of Anglo-French frustrations with Heineken Cup qualification and revenue sharing. "I don't see an Anglo-French competition being successful or lasting that long," Gatland, who was also in charge of the British and Irish Lions during their tour to Australia, told reporters. "I think all parties want full representation from all the countries."
Calum Clark and Lee Dickson preview this weekend's clash with Ospreys, the visitors bringing as many as five British and Irish Lions to Franklin's Gardens for a huge Heineken Cup clash Sunday lunchtime. Kick off is at 12:45pm and tickets are still available. Be in that number - visit for tickets online and on mobile!
Rugby Union Latest: VIDEO: European cup 'deal will be done' - Former Wales and British & Irish Lions fly-half Phil Bennett tells BBC Look East he believes a deal will be struck between European Rugby Cup and the French and English clubs to continue the Heineken Cup.
Disenfranchised: what Warren Gatland’s selections mean for Scottish Rugby Posted on Jul 4, 2013 For those of us north of the border, Scotland’s involvement – or lack thereof – with the hotly-contested British and Irish Lions tour of Australia is a touchy subject. As the team sheet was read out this morning for the third and final test match in Sydney, it became clear our hopes of a test Lion now rest solely on the sizeable shoulders of Richie Gray. This is an altogether familiar situation. For the past decade, our national team has been at best disappointing, and at worst atrocious. Our pro teams have only twice graced the latter stages of the Heineken Cup, and our structure from grass-roots up is light years behind those of the top-tier nations. We’ve been inconsistent at the highest level, failed to capitalise on promising performances, and are perpetually labelled with the dreaded “gallant losers” tag. That we contributed at first only three tourists to the party shows just how poorly our ...

Four teams through to the Heineken Cup quarter-finals - Ulster, Clermont Auvergne, Toulon and Harlequins. Saracens are one win away, as are Leicester Tigers. So who was hot last weekend? Here are a couple of stand-out performers who might well have caught the eye of the British & Irish Lions coaches: Peter O'Mahony (Munster) Man of the Match in win in Edinbugh with 15 carries and fantastic defence Owen Farrell (Saracens) Man of the Match with 32 points in Sarries win over Racing Metro. Immaculate goalkicking display. Eli Walker (Ospreys) Slippery as an eel on the wing for the Welsh region in their draw with Tigers. Dan Cole (Leicester Tigers) Powerful scrummaging display for Tigers as they dominated at scrum time. Luke Fitzgerald (Leinster) Man of the Match with a try for Leinster as they kept alive their hopes of reaching last 8 by beating Scarlets. Leigh Halfpenny (Cardiff Blues) Two tries and 15 points in his first start since Autumn Test series. John Beattie (Montpellier) Second successive Man of the ...
No George North for the Scarlets in their Heineken Cup clash with Leinster in Dublin on Saturday night and Brian O'Driscoll is on the bench for the reigning European champions. Two massive weekends of Euro action to come before we head into the 2013 RBS 6 Nations. Any thoughts on who will hoist the Heineken Cup in May before the British & Irish Lions depart - and who will win the 6 Nations title?
