Today on the 70th anniversary of the Allied D-Day landings in WWII, we remember our brave military forces that sacrificed it all. Louisiana's 156th Infantry Regiment played a role in Operation Overlord, the World War II Allied invasion of Normandy. The regiment was ordered into federal service in November of 1940. It trained at Camp Blanding, Florida and Camp Bowie Texas. In 1942, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entry into the war, the 156th was sent to England. 2-156th, with companies largely from Acadiana, split off and landed in Oran, Algeria where they were re-organized into the 202nd Infantry Battalion and worked as military police due to their ability to speak French. The remainder of the regiment was assigned to the U.S. Assault Training Center in Woolacombe, England, where they trained combat units for amphibious landings, securing beachheads, and other tactics necessary for the coming Normandy invasion. When the invasion began, the 156th was assigned the mission of security ...

It denotes the courage and gallantry by the officers and men of the unit in internal security operations and their unceasing quest for peace and prosperity. And that is what this unit is all about. The yellow-gold background in the unit's logo symbolizes the old ranger code, "Life for the Ranger, Death to the Enemy". It is also indicative of the fact that 76th Infantry (VICTRIX) battalion was formerly the Scout ranger battalion. On the other hand, the seven rays emanating from the torch depicts the seven-man team which is the basic fighting unit of the battalion. The ranger team is also tasked to spearhead the unit's effort to bring enlightenment and awareness among the people. The 76th infantry ...
What does being a Veteran mean to me? Being a Veteran means so much to me. I began serving on 4February2000. I went through basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, where I trained to be an 11B Infantryman. My unit there was Bravo Company 150 Infantry Battalion. I was then stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. Where I was a member of HHC and Alpha Company 5/20 Infantry Battalion. I got out in 2002. After a one year break in service I joined the Ohio Army National Guard. My unit, 1/147 Armored Battalion, was located in Hartwell Ohio. In November of 2004, I received word that I would be attached to a Comabt Engineer Battalion that was going to Iraq. That unit, 612th Engineers, would adopt me for the next year and a half. Back to what being a Veteran means to me. All of those units mentioned above are my family. It doesn't matter if I served with them or not. The men who are currently seeing with the 5/20 Inafantry Battalion right now are my brothers. That goes for every unit I served with. I have noticed som ...

Chester Potts 18 mins My Dear Fusiliers, The time has arrived where we can do no more to save The Second Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. The government is pressing on regardless with Army 2020 despite all the problems they are running into and the targets they are consistently failing to achieve. Never has a regiment been so badly betrayed by a Secretary of State for Defence in order to further political aims. In fact, despite our reasoned argument and figures that show that the Fusiliers are one the best recruited regiments in the British Army. It appears that Mr Hammond has buried his head in the sand. At the very least he has been badly advised and it appears he sees the MOD as merely a spreadsheet to be adjusted at will, so that he can get his figures right. What he fails to see is that there are real people behind these figures who have suffered because of this decision, and people, who unlike others, are and were prepared, to give their lives in the defence of this country We may have com ...

I see this Memorial Day pic posted on my brother's wall so I'll go ahead and Share it here in the Mid-West. My late-brother, Ken died in Cambodia in January 1969 - but first he stopped home for a "leave". I'm at the far left in this pic, just around my 18th birthday. Ken advised me to join the military after high school to take advantage of the "Sullivan Act" (one family son at a time sent to combat zone). That might have saved my life - but the other 998 members of my Infantry Battalion all were sent to war. Two members were "Conscientious Objectors" and were first sent to Medic School then sent to join the battalion , without weapons. My wish is for Peace on this Memorial Day.

After two years at MH Kirkee (Pune) I was posted to a field area (Dharchula) in 1968. The very next day I was ordered to provide medical cover to infantry battalions engaged in Mortar firing at Chhanno range. Alongwith six jawans of AMC I set out for chhano range about 7000 feet higher than Dharchula on a hot day. It was a tough climb and unexpectedly it rained heavily and we all got drenched. On reaching Chhanno (9000ft) all of us started shivering because of chill and cool breeze. We pitched a 180 pounder tent and felt better. One of the nursing assts suggested use of medical comforts (a bottle of Brandy) to overcome cold. I agreed and in no time the bottle was empty. All of us naturally had nice deep sleep. In the morning we realized that our complete stock of condensed milk tins (12 in number)was missing. It was the job of a wild bear (most probably) as bears are known to love sweet things and Chhanno was known to have many of them. All went well and we were back at our medical battalion on the 4th day ...

Last evening, Mary and I motored up to Las Cruces, NM for the Memorial Day candle lighting ceremony at the War Memorial in Veterans Park. I sponsored two Vietnam soldiers who did not come home. The memorial is a semicircle wall with plaques providing a synopsis of each American war beginning with the Revolution. After each of those plaques are plaques with the names of men and women from Dona Ana County who served in that war. We presented candles for those who died in battle. I was commissioned to write the plaques for each war. What an honor! The memorial is impressive. If you ever travel I-10 or I-25 through Las Cruces, I recommend a stop at Veterans Park. After the ceremony we had dinner with my old infantry Battalion Commander in Vietnam, his wife, daughter and son-in-law. He kept us spellbound with stories about a fellow POW during the Korean War, a Catholic priest who gave his life to tend to needs of other prisoners. The chaplain recently received the Medal of Honor, and Paul with other POW's att ...

Durn it, Will Tarwater got me to thinking. Thanks, Will! About Japanese-American soldiers in World War II: There were three Japanese-American units, all highly decorated: The pioneer unit was the 100th Infantry Battalion, made up of Hawaiian soldiers, who fought in Italy. Combat there was horrific because the rugged Apennine terrain always favored the German defenders and the German commander in Italy, Field Marshal Kesselring, was one of the finest generals of the war. At the famous struggle for St. Benedict’s abbey, Monte Cassino, the 100th got its nickname: “The Purple Heart Battalion.” Meanwhile, in basic training, the Army took strenuous efforts to prevent the Hawaiian and West Coast Japanese-Americans in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team from killing each other. The two groups despised each other at first, but not only did they integrate themselves into a real combat unit, but I think the thumping they gave each other made them even better soldiers, because when the Army turned them loose ...

Dad in uniform, c 1943. The group photo is Dad's unit, 5th Division, 8th Brigade, 4th Battalion. From the AWM website; 4th Battalion (Australian Rifles) After the First World War the defence of the Australian mainland lay with the part-time soldiers of the Citizens Military Force (CMF), also known as the Militia. The Militia was organized to maintain the structure of the First AIF and kept the same numerical designations. The 4th Infantry Battalion was designated the “Australian Rifles”, a regiment that had existed in various forms since 1908, with the 4th being raised in the 1920s. In 1930 the 4th merged with the 3rd Infantry Battalion to form the 4th/3rd Infantry Battalion. In 1933 the battalion was separated and the 4th again stood independently. With Japan’s sudden entry into the Second World War and its military success in south-east Asia and the Pacific, the 4th was mobilised for full-time service in early 1942. In June it moved to Greta for further training, joining the rest of the 8th Brigad ...

Dominguez and Caoile were among those sent to the "digging fields". Caoile was then only 20, Dominguez, 25. Good-day Zimbabwe here is what happened- Major-General Douglas Nyikayaramba, is behind the death of captain of the Zimbabwean National Army (ZNA) Edwin Bhundani Nleya who was murdered in 1989. He did this when he was a major at Parachute regiment at Inkomo barracks. Captain Nleya's body was found on a hillside in Hwange, in the western province of Matabeleland North, two months after he disappeared in suspicious circumstances from the camp 1:2 Infantry Battalion in Hwange where he was based. A post-mortem examination and an army inquiry held in camera attributed the death to suicide, yet an inquest carried out later found that Captain Nleya had been murdered. It has been widely alleged that Captain Nleya was killed because of what he knew about the ZNA's involvement in poaching and smuggling activities in Mozambique, evidence of which he had uncovered while on military duty there in 1988. Captain Nleya’s murder was followed by poisoning of his close ally in custody in June, Lt. Shephard Chisango who als ...
Privilege Speech delivered by Gabriela Women’s Party Rep. Luzviminda C. Ilagan 21 October 2013   Mr. Speaker, I rise today on a question of personal and collective privilege   Personal because I am a mother and collective because I am a representative of Gabriela Women’s Party. Today, I would like to bring forward the plight of indigenous women as we commemorate the Indigenous People’s Month and International Rural Women’s Day this October.   More importantly I would also like for this chamber to bring its attention to the continuing militarization and injustice that indigenous women suffer. More than a year ago today, on October 18, 2012,  Juvy Capion, wife of Blaan leader and anti-mining activist Daguil Capion, was killed in “a military operation” along with her two sons, Jordan ‘Pop,’ 13, and ‘Jan-Jan,’ 8 in Tampakan, Kimlawis, Davao del Sur.   Evidences showed the Capion’s house had been strafed by elements of the 27th Infantry Battalion of the Armed Forces of the Philippi ...

Flashfloods overran the soldiers and the villagers as they tried to evacuate to the village's basketball court. The saviors of Bgy Andap suddenly need saving themselves, but there was no help on the way. Had they known in advance that the basketball court was located in a flood prone area, they would've evacuated them to much higher ground. But the team did not have any advance information and had to react quickly. Lt. Deazeta tried to save his men but was dragged 4 kilometers downriver. Still, his team managed to bring so ...

The year I was born 1961 The Blackhawks won the cup for the third time (1934-38 were the other two years they won.) Since learning of this fact I have had an affinity for the Hawks. I first watched them play on WGN in the late 60's mostly late night games, and just peeks of The Jet. When playoffs came around I went to Moller Lanes to watch the games on closed circut from the window that divided the bar from the bowling alley. Many of heartbreaking years later, the Hawks changed course, and had the WANT to give Chicago another Champion to be proud of. In 2010 my wife and I were on Honeymoon in Spain and returned home the evening of the Parade. This year I watched the team that was named after the 86th Infantry Battalion of WW1 win the cup for the 3rd time in my life time, and I am so proud to be comitted to the Indian the team wears on thier sweater. Welcome bandwagon fans, the ride can be bumpy at times but as long as you stay comitted to the Indian, you will always be a Champion.

The 15th Battalion of Honduras Written by Dominique Diaddigo The following report was compiled using information from the forthcoming Rights Action report on the 15th Battalion by Annie Bird. For Right's Actions Executive Summary and full report, see below. The Honduran Army's 15th Infantry Battalion has been widely accused of leading operations that have resulted in Human Rights abuses, which include the notorious attack against campesino protestors in a land dispute in August 2010 that resulted in the murder of a seventeen year-old boy, as well as the death of five security guards. Raynel Funes Ponce, who graduated from the Basic Infantry Officials program at the SOA in 1984, was said to be commander of the 15th Battalion in a 2011 newspaper article. In 2012 it was revealed on the Honduras Armed Forces website that Ponce had assumed command of the Special Forces 1st Battalion. A squad representing the 1st Battalion, led by Josue Sierra, who took a Cadet Arms orientation at the SOA in 2011, murdered 1 .. ...

I have been reading allot of talk about how the civilian populace having guns with high magazines capacities and semi-automatic rates of fire is an extremely bad idea. Much of it is related to the fact that there is no need for it in hunting and sport shooting, although nowhere in the 4608 words in The Constitution and 1478 words of the Declaration of Independence are the words "hunting" or "sporting" found. But my point is about something new, a new shift in the propaganda to the point that an Armed Citizenry with the type of weapons available on the open market both styled after military type weapons and those marketed as hunting and sport weapons could never hold off or fight a modern technologically advanced Army with conventional weapons, Tanks and Aircraft. At face value that would appear to be a true statement, how could a farmer from Iowa or a banker from Texas stand a chance against a Tank Company, and Infantry Battalion, or a few Apache Helicopters? A confrontation like that must have suicidal . ...

NPA campaigns against 84th IB's environmentally-disastrous schemes Simon Santiago NPA-Southern Mindanao Regional Command. Regional Political Department January 23, 2013 In a punitive action against the protector of environmentally-destructive capitalist incursions, Red fighters hit one of the elements of the 84th Infantry Battalion in a sniping operation in sitio Tabak, Brgy. Tawan-tawan, Baguio district, Davao City, on January 22 at 2 pm. The 84th IB withdrew two of its platoons and used as human shield Tabak's tribal leader Datu Sito Saman. The NPA offensive is only one of the many region-wide punitive actions in the last three days as the revolutionary forces escalate the campaign to protect the environment and against its plunderers. The 84th IB has been raring to start full-scale offensive against the New People's Army's Guerilla Front 54 Operations Command. During the temporary ceasefire on January 1, a platoon of soldiers forced the evacuation of poor, hungry residents in the village of Brgy. Tam . ...
A letter from a commander at my fire base Ben tre.The Battle of Ben Tre I was the Commanding Officer of Task Force Builder, an Army engineer group of 60 soldiers that was stationed in the small rural village of Rach Kein, Vietnam in 1968. Rach Kein was approximately 20 miles SW of Saigon, located in Long An Province. Our base camp was next to the base camp of the 3/39 Infantry Battalion of the 9th Infantry Division. Ben Tre, Vietnam, is a moderately size town that is located on the Mekong River about 25 miles SE of Rach Kein. It was much bigger than Rach Kein, probably even bigger than the town of Long An. During the first week of the Tet Offensive the VC made their big move of attacking Saigon. The 3/39 Inf. was initially sent to fight in the big battle for Saigon. This left us alone to face an NVA regiment of 5,000 men that surrounded us on January 29. We survived that. And we remained surrounded and cut off for several weeks. As best I recall, the 3/39 Inf. was in Saigon for about two weeks. I certainl ...

As an American of Japanese descent this hits particularly close to home. EO 9066 by FDR was based in real racism, actual xenophobia, groundless fears and a crippling paranoia of law abiding hard working Americans who looked different but whose country of origin had attacked American soil. At first denied the honor of fighting for their nation, the Americans of Japanese descent were finally allowed to fight against America's enemies, primarily the Germans and Italians in Europe. The 110th Infantry Battalion and later the 442 Regimental Combat Team and 522nd Field Artillery Battalion consisted solely of Americans of Japanese descent with Anglo officers earned numerous individual and unit citations for bravery under fire to include 7 Presidential Unit Citations, dozens of Distinguished Service Crosses and Oak Leaf Clusters, hundreds of Silver and Bronze stars, 1 Distinguished Service Metal, and countless Purple Hearts were presented to these men with "funny looking eyes" but not one Medal of Honor, that is u ...

Rebels burn Northern Builders construction equipment (12/31) New People's Army (NPA) rebels burned two heavy-duty construction equipment owned by Northern Builders Corp. in Barangay Putlan, Carranglan on the night of December 15. The firm is involved in the rehabilitation of the national highway in Nueva Ecija. The 7th Infantry Division (7ID) of the Philippine Army condemned the incident. Brig. Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang, Jr., 7ID commander, said, "These are criminals who extort money from contractors. They resort to burning equipment when their extortion demands were denied." Initial investigation showed that five armed men, together with an amazon, managed to enter the compound of the construction firm by pretending to be local residents asking for donations. They immediately detained the security guard on duty. Forces from the 3rd Infantry Battalion who rushed to the scene found all the workers detained in a room and immediately freed them. “A Mindanao Story – Troubled Decades in the Eye of the Storm” by: MGEN DELFIN CASTRO (Ret), former Commander of SOUTHCOM AFP from 1980 to 1986. Chapter 4: The Reward of Persuasion: Bloodbath in Pata Even as the NPA was being checked along the Davao-Agusan boundary incident was shaping up in Sulu, one of that had echoes of the Patikul massacre of 10 October 1977 and that would characterize the duplicity and ferocity of the conflict in the southern islands in those years. In time, it came to be known as the Pata Massacre. The 3rd Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division had launched an operation in Pata Island on February 9, 1981 in the wake of reported landings of an undetermined number of MNLF forces somewhere at Barangay Pata Likud. The 31st Infantry Battalion was at the forefront while two other battalions were screening on the mainland side. The Brigade set up its Advance Command Post in Patian Island, the next island away from Pata. As a result, Mayor Burahan of Pata called a meeting of island leade ...

Didn't know this guy personally, but read it in August & saved it b/c it touched me; Lest we forget; Arnold, Frank Edward- Frank passed away at the age of 88 in his sleep, August 18 2012. Frank was a WWII Veteran and served with the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa 3rd Infantry Battalion. He was a longtime avid member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Lions Club. A Soldier Died Today He was getting old and Paunchy, and his hair was falling fast and he sat around the legion, telling stories of the past. Of a war that he once fought in and the deeds that he had done, in his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes, every one. And ‘tho sometimes to his neighbors his tales became a joke, all his buddies listened quietly for they knew whereof he spoke. But we’ll hear his tales no longer, for ol’ Frank has passed away, and the world’s a little poorer for a soldier that died today. He wont be mourned by many, just his children and his wife. For he lived an ordinary, very quiet sort of life. He held a ...

Our so called "Leaders" sat by and did nothing to save our people during this 6 hour attack! This is tantamount to a Vietnam infantry Battalion Commander and his staff deciding to do NOTHING when a squad leader radios for help because they are under attack by the enemy. "No, let's wait and see what happens!" "Let's not send anyone in harms way until we know more of what is going on." "Let's just saunter over to the Officers Club and have a couple of beers. If they die, they die. We'll learn in the morning what happens. Besides, those soldiers are probably already dead.plus they are expendable..." If this had happened in Vietnam, that Battalion Commander would have for sure been fired and replaced and maybe be court martialed for dereliction of duty. It doesn't take courage or guts to try and rescue our people in trouble...whose lives are at stake! But, to do nothing! A ...
while i share the sentiment of our comrades, but if this is only propaganda to cover the killing of pregnant woman with two children in mindanao. i am deeply not agreeable bcaz this are two separate issues to be resolved according to laws of the land, Giwu!
I'm in the most trained Infantry Battalion in the Corps, w/ the longest record of combat, it's a waste not to use me.

The 509th was originally constituted on 14 March 1941 as the 504th Parachute Battalion and activated on 5 October 1941 at Fort Benning, GA. It was reorganized and redesignated on 24 February 1942 as the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment. Just prior to its first operation, it was again redesignated on 2 November 1942 as the 2nd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment. (The 2nd Battalion was the only active element of the 509PIR. In the 503d PIR, then in Australia, a new 2nd Battalion, with different honors and lineage, was formed.) The unit, heavily combat-attrited in Italy, was redesignated on 10 December 1943 as the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion, a designation it retained for the remainder of the war.

Sometimes I question god why am I in a infantry battalion. Sometimes I thank god for that too. :)
Nothing like watching a 1951 classic go for broke a movie about the 442nd regimental combat team and the 100th infantry battalion who was composed of american people of Japanese ancestry and did 7 major campaigns in Europe with 18,143 individual decorations and 7 presidential unit citations with 9,486 casualties during WWII and starts in Camp Shelby Mississippi in 1943...its a good movie...
Message from Iraq The proud warriors of Baker Company wanted to do something to pay tribute to our fallen comrades. So since we are part of the only Marine Infantry Battalion left in Iraq, the one way that we could think of doing that is by taking a picture of Baker Company saying the way we feel. It would be awesome if you could find a way to share this with our fellow countrymen. I was wondering if there was anyway to get this into your papers to let the world know that "WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN" and are proud to serve our country." Semper Fi 1st Sgt Dave Jobe
