Noble principles and backing a noble program by Richard B. Muhammad Editor FinalCall.Com This time of year is special to me. For many years, this was the time initiates were brought into the Alpha Iota Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity at Morgan State University in Baltimore. Kappa Alpha Psi was founded in 1911 at Indiana University in a hotbed of racism and KKK country. It was a time when Black men were regularly hung from trees. Our founders suffered incredible isolation and rejection. Despite those storms, they persevered, they united, they organized and they decided to combat ugly racial oppression in America. Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity was founded at Cornell University in 1906. “While continuing to stress academic excellence among its members, Alpha also recognized the need to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices faced by African-Americans,” the fraternity notes on its website. Then there are Omega Psi Phi fraternity, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Delta Sigma ...

Just A little History For You: Beginning with the Prince Hall Freemasonry, there are many historically Black fraternal organizations. The organizations include members such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a member of Alpha Phi Alpha and Sigma Pi Phi; Jesse Jackson, a member of Omega Psi Phi; and Wilt Chamberlain, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi. Some organizations, such as the Prince Hall Masons, Swing Phi Swing and Groove Phi Groove don't use Greek letters solely. The first and oldest successful African-American collegiate fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, was formally established as a fraternity at Cornell University in 1906, though it operated as a social study club in 1905. Precursors to Alpha Phi Alpha included Sigma Pi Phi (a non-collegiate fraternity), and unsuccessful attempts such as Gamma Phi Fraternity at Wilberforce University (first campus recognition documented in 1923; a 1923 yearbook entry reported operation as early as 1905), Alpha Kappa Nu at Indiana University (formation attempted in 1903, but i ...

Black History - Alpha Kappa Nu & Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. In The Story of Kappa Alpha Psi: A History of the Beginning and Development of A College Greek Letter Organization 1911-1999, Historian Ralph J. Bryson recounted that his own fraternity "may have begun in 1903 on the Indiana University campus, but there were too few registrants to assure continuing organization. That year, a club was formed called Alpha Kappa Nu Greek Society," but the unincorporated club disappeared after a short time.Bryson states that the original moniker (Kappa Alpha Nu) of Kappa Alpha Psi, which did become an African-American Fraternity, may have been chosen in tribute to the short lived club. However there is no concrete evidence as to why the Greek letters Kappa Alpha Nu were chosen, and the name was later changed. Kappa Alpha Psi's historian credits the name change in 1915 with allowing their organization to "thereby became a Greek letter Fraternity in every sense of the designation.
