Some great advice found in an 1846 manual for medical students regarding male practitioners entering the home of a laboring woman: "As soon as you arrive let the husband, or some familiar friend, inform the lady, and then you should remain in the antechamber until she requests your presence... When you enter the room, let your mind be called and collected, and your feelings kindly sympathize with those of the patient." A. Curtis as found in Ina May Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth.

"Although I strongly advocate that new parents nake every effort to nurse their babies, as a matter of compassion I also believe it's important for those of us who breastfeeding to refrain from being judgmental of those who do not. What to do in you own case. Most families attacked by Children's Aid can not spend the over fifty thousand dollars that it takes to bring a case to trial. For CAS victims who must rely on legal aid, there is no reliable way to save your family, only a few tips that may slightly improve your prospects. Should you get in a court battle with only legal aid lawyers, your chances of keeping your family undamaged are small. Say as little as possible - they will twist every fact against you. Particularly avoid revealing that you or your spouse were in foster care or the victim of past abuse. Such parents appreciate the value of a family better than anyone else, but in the CAS fantasy world, that makes you a likely abuser yourself. Also avoid disclosing the names of alienated family members, such as a former spouse. If you have a good poker face, use it. Any expression of anger, no matter how justified, will be used as a point against you. Social workers have been known to provoke anger to justify child removal. ...

There is a sacred power in the innately feminine capacity of giving birth. It is one of the elemental, continuing processes of nature that women have the chance to experience, and it is the one act of human creation that is not shared by man. Why would we not want to explore that? - Ina May Gaskin, Birth Matters

(Lara) I believe parenting is a job and a journey worth preparing ourselves for. People go to college to learn the skills for a new job but are often unprepared for the role of being a parent. I read stack of books and while nothing can ever fully prepare you for this marvellous and exhausting responsibility, it does help to have an understanding of child development, pregnancy, child birth and Breastfeeding. I read and read The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding and Attachment Parenting books by Dr Sears. Anything by Ina May Gaskin is awesome! There are so many others out now 11 years later that I would love to be able to sit down and read cover to cover so what would you recommend to a new parent or someone newly pregnant?

Would you lay on your back to poo? so why giving birth? did you know and i didny till i was prego in yoga training as well.as.listened to some Ina May Gaskin talks that when you lay on your back at any time with a heavy baby filled uterus that the uterus lays on the artery that feeds it and cuts off circulation to the uterus. so of you give birth on your backnyou are giving birth with a white uterus. on top of when you give birth the tail.bone opens to.make room for the baby. yeah id wanna epidural too i am sure if i was forced to birth on my back eish. but why would one.want to make the part of us numb that had to.do the work. try going for a run after you numb your feet.
I *might* meet Ina May Gaskin today... there are no words... if you don't know who that is you should definitely look her up!!!
"A self-possessed woman in childbirth can be a powerful teacher for all ( including herself) on the temporality, humility, and connectedness of life. What if the medical establishment that purports to be saving women from the specter of pain and danger is instead ejecting then from the seats of their power ? ~Ani DiFranco~ From Birth Matters - Ina May Gaskin -

I am posting this photo in recognition of the thousands of Midwives, each âauthenticâ in her service to mothers and their babies since the Beginning of Time. For the Indigenous Midwives who traveled around this globe as their communities and tribes migrated to New Lands. For the First Nation Midwives who birth babies as their tribes preceded in the death march that was The Trail of Tears. For the Japanese Midwives who caught babies who were born in the US Concentrations camps during the Second World War. For Midwife Sibby Kelly, Petersville, Georgia and the thousands of Grand Midwives who served the women of the South, both Black and white, rich or poor, when no one else would. These âAuthentic Midwivesâ upon whose shoulders Ina May Gaskin and thousands of other modern day midwives stand. Claudia Booker, Midwife,

Stop Doing Kegels: Real Pelvic Floor Advice For Women (and Men) A few years ago, Katy Bowman kicked up a dust storm when she offered not the standard âdo your kegelsâ for a strong pelvic floor (PF), but this following advice: A Kegel attempts to strengthen the pelvic floor, but it really only continues to pull the sacrum inward promoting even more weakness, and more PF gripping. The muscles that balance out the anterior pull on the sacrum are the glutes. A lack of glutes (having no butt) is what makes this group so much more susceptible to pelvic floor disorder (PFD). Zero lumbar curvature (missing the little curve at the small of the back) is the most telling sign that the pelvic floor is beginning to weaken. An easier way to say this is: Weak glutes + too many Kegels = PFD. Katyâs recommendation? Developing an (eventual) deep squatting habit (picture going to the bathroom while camping) to create the posterior pull on the sacrum and balance the work of the pelvic floor. If youâve read a lot of m ...
"Those who are not terrified are more likely to secrete in abundance the hormones that make labor and birth easier and less painful - sometimes even pleasurable." ~ Ina May Gaskin
Ina May Gaskin is being inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame on Oct. 12th. That is awesome!! I am so excited! She is an amazing midwife who has opened our eyes to how natural child birth should and can be. She is also the only person who is not a doctor who has a medical maneuver named after her. The Gaskins maneuver...Oh! And she's also done a TED talk. Check it out. :o)

"Mothers who are afraid tend to secrete the hormones that delay or inhibit birth. This is true of all mammals and is part of nature's design.â ~ Ina May Gaskin
"Babies are not dumb. Just because they don't speak English doesn't mean they're dumb. A newborn infant is just as intelligent as you are. When you're relating with him, you should consider that you are relating with a very intelligent being who just doesn't speak your language yet. And you shouldn't do anything gross to him before he learns to speak with you." - Stephen Gaskin in the forward for Spritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin
I have been lucky enough to have had a long conversation with Ina May Gaskin. Her words always make there way back to kindness and health.

Coming soon to Chico: the film about Ina May Gaskin, "Birth Story"
Positive Pregnancy, Birth, and Parenting In a society where negativity meets us at every corner while we bring new life and raise our children, it can be a challenge to overcome the cynicism. From the moment we find out we are pregnant, we are surrounded by books like, WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTING. Shows like THE BABY STORY on TLC, full of danger and terror. Movies showing women screaming and angry as they give birth. We are told of horrible pregnancy symptoms to expect and at times bombarded with comments from friends and strangers. Parenthood is something to endure and âget throughâ in our culture. I remember when I was pregnant with my first baby, I was having a romantic dinner with my husband. We were excited about our upcoming birth and to become parents. A complete stranger came up to us and felt compelled to let us know we better enjoy it while it lasts (the dinner without a baby), because our lives were going to change drastically. It felt like she was trying to pop our bubble of ...
Ina May Gaskin, the midwifery pioneer, on natural birth in America.
Sphincter Law & its implications: Ina May Gaskin Food for thought Childbirth works according to Sphincter Law; major principles are: Sphincters such as the anal sphincter & cervix, do not obey orders. Sphincters open more readily in conditions of privacy & intimacy. Sphincters open more readily when their owner is feeling grateful, aroused or amused. Sphincters, even when well dilated, can suddenly close when their owner feels in any way threatened.
This time 4 years ago I was in labour. It was all a bit scary at this point but once the midwives arrived and I got in the pool it was an amazing experience. I can't pretend it didn't hurt at all but I'd do it again tomorrow. Birthing our beautiful daughter in a calm and peaceful way was one of the best things I've ever done (the other was her brother). I was maybe very lucky to have such a positive first birth, but I had some wonderful support and I put in a lot of preparation too. No-one can predict what will happen during labour and birth and it's unlikely to go exactly to plan but I truly believe that preparation and education are the key to having a positive experience (and avoiding one born every minute - it hadn't started then!). And relaxation. Lots and lots of relaxation. And believing in your body, because lets face it if we weren't able to birth our babies, humans would have died out long before the development of modern medicine (not that it can't be wonderful when it is necessary). So when y ...
