Some great advice found in an 1846 manual for medical students regarding male practitioners entering the home of a laboring woman: "As soon as you arrive let the husband, or some familiar friend, inform the lady, and then you should remain in the antechamber until she requests your presence... When you enter the room, let your mind be called and collected, and your feelings kindly sympathize with those of the patient." A. Curtis as found in Ina May Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth.
There is no other organ quite like the uterus. If men had such an organ they would brag about it. So should we. ~Ina May Gaskin

"It's very rare to see an undisturbed birth in a modern U.S. teaching hospital, but when you see a woman who isn't frightened, who's giving birth without interference, you stand back in awe and realize how little needed you are except in the rare circumstance." Ina May Gaskin
“Remember this, for it is as true and true gets: Your body is not a lemon. You are not a machine. The Creator is not a careless mechanic. Human female bodies have the same potential to give birth well as aardvarks, lions, rhinoceri, elephants, moose, and water buffalo. Even if it has not been your habit throughout your life so far, I recommend that you learn to think positively about your body.” Ina May Gaskin

"Although I strongly advocate that new parents nake every effort to nurse their babies, as a matter of compassion I also believe it's important for those of us who breastfeeding to refrain from being judgmental of those who do not. How would it make you feel for someone to make comments about a way of feeding that you have no way to reverse? It is possible to educate without issuing statements that make people feel criticized." As always, well said Ina May Gaskin.

What to do in you own case. Most families attacked by Children's Aid can not spend the over fifty thousand dollars that it takes to bring a case to trial. For CAS victims who must rely on legal aid, there is no reliable way to save your family, only a few tips that may slightly improve your prospects. Should you get in a court battle with only legal aid lawyers, your chances of keeping your family undamaged are small. Say as little as possible - they will twist every fact against you. Particularly avoid revealing that you or your spouse were in foster care or the victim of past abuse. Such parents appreciate the value of a family better than anyone else, but in the CAS fantasy world, that makes you a likely abuser yourself. Also avoid disclosing the names of alienated family members, such as a former spouse. If you have a good poker face, use it. Any expression of anger, no matter how justified, will be used as a point against you. Social workers have been known to provoke anger to justify child removal. ...

There is a sacred power in the innately feminine capacity of giving birth. It is one of the elemental, continuing processes of nature that women have the chance to experience, and it is the one act of human creation that is not shared by man. Why would we not want to explore that? - Ina May Gaskin, Birth Matters
A wise mama asks: First off, thank you for this amazing page! It's so inspiring to see women all over the world taking back natural birth and gentle parenting. So I recently found I am pregnant and have read some amazing books already everything by Ina may gaskin and gentle birth, gentle mothering. (Lara) I believe parenting is a job and a journey worth preparing ourselves for. People go to college to learn the skills for a new job but are often unprepared for the role of being a parent. I read stack of books and while nothing can ever fully prepare you for this marvellous and exhausting responsibility, it does help to have an understanding of child development, pregnancy, child birth and Breastfeeding. I read and read The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding and Attachment Parenting books by Dr Sears. Anything by Ina May Gaskin is awesome! There are so many others out now 11 years later that I would love to be able to sit down and read cover to cover so what would you recommend to a new parent or someone newly pregnant?

Stop Doing Kegels: Real Pelvic Floor Advice For Women (and Men) A few years ago, Katy Bowman kicked up a dust storm when she offered not the standard “do your kegels” for a strong pelvic floor (PF), but this following advice: A Kegel attempts to strengthen the pelvic floor, but it really only continues to pull the sacrum inward promoting even more weakness, and more PF gripping. The muscles that balance out the anterior pull on the sacrum are the glutes. A lack of glutes (having no butt) is what makes this group so much more susceptible to pelvic floor disorder (PFD). Zero lumbar curvature (missing the little curve at the small of the back) is the most telling sign that the pelvic floor is beginning to weaken. An easier way to say this is: Weak glutes + too many Kegels = PFD. Katy’s recommendation? Developing an (eventual) deep squatting habit (picture going to the bathroom while camping) to create the posterior pull on the sacrum and balance the work of the pelvic floor. If you’ve read a lot of m ...

Coming soon to Chico: the film about Ina May Gaskin, "Birth Story"
Positive Pregnancy, Birth, and Parenting In a society where negativity meets us at every corner while we bring new life and raise our children, it can be a challenge to overcome the cynicism. From the moment we find out we are pregnant, we are surrounded by books like, WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTING. Shows like THE BABY STORY on TLC, full of danger and terror. Movies showing women screaming and angry as they give birth. We are told of horrible pregnancy symptoms to expect and at times bombarded with comments from friends and strangers. Parenthood is something to endure and “get through” in our culture. I remember when I was pregnant with my first baby, I was having a romantic dinner with my husband. We were excited about our upcoming birth and to become parents. A complete stranger came up to us and felt compelled to let us know we better enjoy it while it lasts (the dinner without a baby), because our lives were going to change drastically. It felt like she was trying to pop our bubble of ...

Sphincter Law & its implications: Ina May Gaskin Food for thought Childbirth works according to Sphincter Law; major principles are: Sphincters such as the anal sphincter & cervix, do not obey orders. Sphincters open more readily in conditions of privacy & intimacy. Sphincters open more readily when their owner is feeling grateful, aroused or amused. Sphincters, even when well dilated, can suddenly close when their owner feels in any way threatened.
This time 4 years ago I was in labour. It was all a bit scary at this point but once the midwives arrived and I got in the pool it was an amazing experience. I can't pretend it didn't hurt at all but I'd do it again tomorrow. Birthing our beautiful daughter in a calm and peaceful way was one of the best things I've ever done (the other was her brother). I was maybe very lucky to have such a positive first birth, but I had some wonderful support and I put in a lot of preparation too. No-one can predict what will happen during labour and birth and it's unlikely to go exactly to plan but I truly believe that preparation and education are the key to having a positive experience (and avoiding one born every minute - it hadn't started then!). And relaxation. Lots and lots of relaxation. And believing in your body, because lets face it if we weren't able to birth our babies, humans would have died out long before the development of modern medicine (not that it can't be wonderful when it is necessary). So when y ...

Okay so the question was posed: What seven people in the birth world would you like to have lined up as speakers for an event? I think my answer is the best. "Hey Natural Parents, need some words of wisdom please. After spending 35 weeks in the care of my OB and feeling I am being railroaded to a repeat C-section, I have opted to VBAC at The Farm in Tennessee with Ina May Gaskin (my scar is in great condition, double sutured, great candidate for VBAC). Hubby and I are packing our bags to leave at 38 weeks, flying from NY. I've been feeling good about the decision but then tonight I had a friend send me a lengthy email basically telling me in the nicest way possible that I am only taking my needs into consideration by doing a natural birth outside of a hospital setting, that I am endangering my baby because I won't have immediate access to "the best" care available because I won't be in a hospital. Also, she went into lengthy discussion about traveling with a newborn during flu season and she capped it off with saying that if it were her she would take another "terrible c-section" because she would do anything for her baby. I feel she is has good intentions but ...

“Gardeners know that you must nourish the soil if you want healthy plants. You must water the plants adequately, especially when seeds are germinating and sprouting, and they should be planted in a nutrient-rich soil. Why should nutrition matter less in the creation of young humans than it does in young plants? I'm sure that it doesn't.” ― Ina May Gaskin, Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. In Stephen King’s novella “The Breathing Method”: Commenting on the fear many women have of birth, his fictional character observes, “Believe me: if you are told that some experience is going to hurt, it will hurt. Most pain is in the mind, and when a woman absorbs the idea that the act of giving birth is excruciatingly painful-when she gets this information from her mother, her sisters, her married friends, and her physician-that woman has been mentally prepared to feel great agony.” King is the father of several children born at home. from Ina May Gaskin’s Guide to Childbirth

What is Sphincter Law? l coined the term, so let me explain. My invention of this phrase was born out of the need I saw for new thinking in the formulation of explanations of how women's bodies work in labour and birth. I believe that those terms that midwifery has borrowed from obstetrics often pro...

Just watched Ricki Lake's show about The Business of Being Born. Fabulous! All of Ricki's comments were wonderful, as were Stuart Fischbein's and Ina May Gaskin's! The show ended with a brief but beautiful clip of a waterbirth. While unassisted birth wasn't mentioned as an option (sigh, maybe someday), Ricki did speak with a woman in the audience who had an accidental unassisted birth after a 2 hour labor. Great show!

With 3 little ones, the middle of the night is my only "me" time. Tonight I'm watching my dvr'd Ricki Lake Show from this afternoon, talking about midwives/doulas/homebirth/the business of being born/ fascinating stuff, etc. Ricki just introduced Ina May Gaskin. I'm so looking forward to watching this interview, but I have to take a minute to thank God for bringing Alice Brayer into my life and giving me the opportunity to have Eleanor with her. She is my hero, my very own Ina May. I've had 4 very different birth experiences and I am thrilled to think of how awesome will be, (a couple years from now) when we get to have our first homebirth with Alice. Woohoo! Although I know a homebirth is not for everyone, it is a dream of mine. If you haven't seen The Business of Being Born, you might want to check it out. My personal experiences line up with what the documentary talks about and it's very scary stuff! I'm so grateful for the last 6 years of learning (ever since my first child was born) and I'm excited t ...
Turned out to be a great show Ricki Lake! What an amazing group of people you gathered at that stage, if only you had another hour! Stuart James Fischbein, Ana Paula Markel, Ina May Gaskin, Abby Epstein, Lynn Wolf. So happy to have been there and spent time with all of you.
Awesome, there talking about midwifes and Doulas on Ricky lake with Ina may Gaskin! This is awesome!
Ina May Gaskin is on the Ricki Lake Show right now!!! Also, dr. Fischbein
Watching Ina May Gaskin, am continually astounded by barbaric history of birth in the medical model-in 1960s 2/3rds of births used forceps
So I'm vacuuming and the Ricki Lake Show comes back on and I sit back down as the episode is about births in America. Out walks Ina May Gaskin, who is internationally known as THE leading midwife and author of Spiritual Midwifery(which I've owned for13 years) and wife of Stephen Gaskin, of The Farm in Middle Tennessee.

Was pleasantly surprised this morning, as I attended a community doula network system, to be face-to-face with Julie Bonapace. She is working on changing recommendation regarding childbirth pain for the SOGC. She actually came to the group to teach us physiology of pain, as it is taught to all medical staff. But also there, to get feedback on how to change things in a maternity ward wide spread Canadian hospitals: don't propose epidurals, be empathetic, change your words, placebo is a powerful thing... I mentioned Ina May Gaskin's books; she is hooked and want to know more about the Farm!!! :)
