Imperial Japan

The Empire of Japan (Kyūjitai: ; Shinjitai: ; Romaji: Dai Nippon Teikoku; literally Great Imperial State of Japan; officially Great Japan or Empire of Great Japan; commonly as Imperial Japan or the Japanese Empire) was an empire and world power that existed from the Meiji Restoration on 3 January 1868 to the enactment of the post-World War II Constitution of Japan on 3 May 1947.

The patriot who is seldom acknowledged by our nation. He came fourth in the ICS examination and was selected but he did not want to work under an alien government which would mean serving the British. As he stood on the verge of taking the plunge by resigning from the Indian Civil Service in 1921, he wrote to his elder brother Sarat: "Only on the soil of sacrifice and suffering can we raise our national edifice". Finally, he resigned from his civil service job on 23 April 1921 and returned to India. He was imprisoned by the British authorities eleven times. His famous motto was: "Give me blood and I will give you freedom". Jai Hind, or, "Glory to India!" was another slogan used by him and later adopted by the Government of India and the Indian Armed Forces. His stance did not change with the outbreak of the Second World War, which he saw as an opportunity to take advantage of British weakness. At the outset of the war, he left India, travelling to the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, seeking ...

Cheney has long backed torture, blithely supporting techniques that were called war crimes when used by Imperial Japan or Nazi Germany, and outlawed in treaties signed by most civilized nations. His central claim — not supported by a phone-book-thick body of evidence — is that torturing terrorists produced “phenomenal results,” including “the intelligence that allowed us to get Osama bin Laden.” Without having read the Senate Intelligence Committee report, he was quick to say on Monday that the barbarism committed in our name was “absolutely, totally justified.” And of course, he would do it all again, without hesitation. By Wednesday, he was the petulant child caught and cornered. Confronted with evidence that 26 detainees were wrongfully held, with examples of “rectal feeding” (rape by another definition), or induced hypothermia that most likely killed one suspect, he proclaimed the exhaustive inquiry “full of crap.” He still had not read the report. It’s impolite to call someb ...

"You are kidding yourself if you think the same will not happen again.” -- Justice Antonin Scalia The internment of Japanese Americans was the World War II confinement of between 110,000 and 120,000[2] people of Japanese heritage who lived on the Pacific coast of the United States. The U.S. government ordered the removal of Japanese Americans in 1942, shortly after Imperial Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor.[3] The internment was applied unequally as a geographic matter: almost all who lived on the West Coast were sent to camps, while in Hawaii, where 150,000-plus Japanese Americans comprised over one-third of the population, only 1,200 to 1,800 were interned.[4] Sixty-two percent of the internees were American citizens.[5][6] President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the internment with Executive Order 9066, issued February 19, 1942, which allowed local military commanders to designate "military areas" from which "any or all persons may be excluded." This power was used to declare that all people of Japa ...
As we did in World War II we we defeated Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan not by being weak through strength
Just heard a comment which made a great deal of sense. In Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia and Imperial Japan the "peaceful majority" were/was irrelevant. Tens of millions died under the leadership of philosophically radical, militant governments. Why should we expect anything different today from the 1.2 billion Muslims who are being dragged into oblivion by the radical Jihadists? Yes, the situations are not completely analogous but the results will be the same if someone (USA) does not stand up and put a stop to it.

NEW: Christopher Gerteis, Introduced by John W. Dower, Political Protest in Interwar Japan → is the second in a series of Visualizing Cultures reprints. In the coming months the Asia-Pacific Journal will reprint a number of articles on the theme of social protest in Japan originally posted at MIT VC, together with an introduction by John W. Dower to the series. This unit introduces Japanese political graphics from the 1920s and 1930s selected from the remarkable collection of several thousand posters and handbills maintained by the Ohara Institute for Social Science Research at Hosei University in Tokyo. Focusing on leftwing political parties, labor-union and tenant-farmer organizations and protests, and proletarian social and cultural movements in general, the Ohara collection opens a window on the domestic conflict and turbulence that lay beneath the ultimate triumph of militarism and authoritarianism in Imperial Japan. Today in History: August 7, 1942 – World War II: the Battle of Guadalcanal begins – United States Marines initiate the first American offensive of the war with landings on Guadalcanal and Tulagi in the Solomon Islands. The Guadalcanal Campaign, also known as the Battle of Guadalcanal and codenamed Operation Watchtower by Allied forces, was a military campaign fought between 7 August 1942 and 9 February 1943 on and around the island of Guadalcanal in the Pacific theatre of World War II. It was the first major offensive by Allied forces against the Empire of Japan. On 7 August 1942, Allied forces, predominantly American, landed on the islands of Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and Florida in the southern Solomon Islands with the objective of denying their use by the Japanese to threaten the supply and communication routes between the US, Australia, and New Zealand. The Allies also intended to use Guadalcanal and Tulagi as bases to support a campaign to eventually capture or neutralize the major Japanese base at Ra ...

That weird thing where the Venezuelan government is casting Imperial Japan in WWII as a victim of US imperialism.
I love the Redskins' (and devoted fans) argument that the Redskins name is something that should honored because it was bestowed upon them 80 glorious years ago. Let's get into the wayback machine and understand the socio-political landscape some 80 years ago: 1) There was no Civil Rights Amendment that protected African Americans so they were still living under Jim Crow laws and rule which continued the systematic abuse. 2) Nazi Germany was rising and within 10 years forward, 6 to 8 million Jews would be exterminated by virtue of their belief system. 3) Imperial Japan was mounting a campaign to put the hurt on China and this exercise blew away 35 million Chinese lives. 4) The entire world was preparing to engage in another massive war and that would put out the light on an estimated 62 million souls on Planet Earth. So..what exactly were we as human beings doing right when it comes to racial/social relations 80 years ago? The Redskins moniker was bestowed upon the Washington football team dur ...
A little over a week after the greatest amphibious invasion took place to pierce Fortress Europe and open a second front in the fight against Nazi Germany, the largest naval Pacific amphibious invasion fleet to date assembled off of my home of Saipan 70 years ago today (June 15) to bring the war to the doorstep of Imperial Japan in what some have coined as the D-Day of the Pacific. Although the Battle of Saipan has never received the press that the Normandy invasion and the Iwo Jima invasion did here in the Pacific, it is interesting to note the significance of the battle in the overall drive to bring Imperial Japan to its knees. For starters, it was the first piece of Japanese territory to be attacked and captured with a significant presence of Japanese civilians. Many of whom committed suicide rather than surrender to American forces. Of the roughly 30,000 soldiers and sailors who defended the island, less then a thousand were taken alive. Of that force, a large number were wiped out in the final days . ...
Photo of the Week: Memorial Day 1947 Although less than two years after the end of World War II, Memorial Day 1947 was a rather subdued affair in Bloomington, perhaps owing to the still-lingering exhaustion of the all-out effort to defeat Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, as well as the interest among many veterans to leave the martial life behind in favor of one considerably more civilian and familial in outlook! Seen here is the parade heading south along the 200 and 300 blocks of South Main Street (this view looks much different today due to the Law and Justice Center now bisecting Main Street). The second photograph shows an American Legion honor guard standing near the graves of World War I veterans during services at Park Hill Cemetery on the city’s west side.

So this is how Republicans say Thank you for your service.

Just remember that this "caring" and inept Federal Government is now in charge of YOUR health care? Congratulations to the morons who support this president. You have succeeded in doing what Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan and the cold war Soviet Union couldn't do. You have destroyed your country. Yes, YOUR country. I hope you all rot in ***
Seems a little strange to me that Russia would somewhat prominently celebrate a dictatorship that was responsible for the deaths of millions of people in their opening ceremonies, even if it is part of their history. Strikes me as being similar to Japan honoring WWII Imperial Japan during the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony, should they host it in 2020. featured in NBC s Science of Love
Military attachés and observers in the Russo-Japanese War were historians creating first-hand accounts of what was arguably the world's first modern war.[1] They helped to create primary-source records of this war between Imperial Russian forces and Imperial Japan forces, which has been characterize...
This day in U.S. military history, January 7th: 1865: In revenge for the Sand Creek Massacre, one thousand Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Lakota warriors attacked Julesburg, Colorado. In the battle, the Indians defeated about 60 soldiers of the U.S. army and 50 armed civilians. In the following weeks the Indians raided up and down the South Platte River valley. On February 2nd, they returned to Julesburg and burned down all the buildings in the settlement, although not attacking the soldiers and civilians holed up in the fort. 1942: The Battle of Bataan, also known as the Siege of Bataan, began. It was the most intense phase of Imperial Japan's invasion of the Philippines during World War II. Ending on April 9th, it was the largest surrender in American and Filipino military history, and was the largest United States surrender since the Civil War's Battle of Harper's Ferry. About 75,000 Filipino and American soldiers became prisoners of war. The surrender of Bataan would hasten the fall of Corregidor, a month lat ...
Yasukuni shrine: Japan’s Abe spirited away: Technically, the shrine (which is run privately, not by the government) is reserved for fallen military personnel who died for the cause of Imperial Japan. After their enshrinement, the deceased become “kami” – spirits. There are over 2.5 million of them at Yasukuni. All kami (spirits) get egalitarian treatment The treatment of Kami is egalitarian in Japan. Their previous lives and deeds do not count. Beijing and Seoul cry, rightly so, that some kami were former Class-A war criminals. Tokyo contends that religion and politics are two separate things. So why does the Prime Minister visit the controversial shrine, even if, as he said, it’s for private reasons? After his visit to the shrine, Abe reminded the Chinese and Koreans that strengthening ties with Japan are in their best interest. In the spirit of non-interference into national affairs, Japan is the sole master over its own spiritualism and customs. Fair enough, but observers worry that Abe’s J ...
Equal Opportunities Rosie the Riveter made planes in the factory. She worked on the wings. Wanda the Welder made ships in the shipyard. All across America from Curtiss to Lockheed, from Elco shipyards to Ford Motor Co, airplanes, ships and tanks were made by women in the workplace. Equal opportunities abounded and there was work for everyone while the men were away fighting. Twelve hour shifts were the norm, weapons made with a woman's touch helped defeat the Nazi's and Imperial Japan. Rosie wasn't bothered about breaking a nail if her rivet gun slipped. Nor was Wanda fazed if sparks singed her hair. They did their bit for the war and freedom and liberty. They were better off financially and enjoyed new opportunities. Discrimination lessened by equality. Women workers with more in common with the 21st Century than their own decade. Other women rolled bandages for the Red Cross, entertained the troops at canteens, helped out at the Salvation Army and a dozen other things in wartime America. Important like ...

Taipei was founded in the early 18th century and became an important center for overseas trade in the 19th century. The Qing Dynasty of China made Taipei the provincial capital of Taiwan in 1886.Japan acquired Taiwan in 1895 after the First Sino-Japanese War. Taiwan became a colony of Imperial Japan with Taipei as its capital. Taiwan's Japanese rulers embarked on an extensive program of advanced urban planning that featured extensive railroad links. A number of Taipei landmarks and cultural institutions date from this period. The Republic of China took over the island in 1945 following Japanese surrender. After losing Mainland China to the Chinese Communist Party in the Chinese Civil War, the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) relocated the ROC government to Taiwan and declared Taipei the provisional capital of the Republic of China in December 1949. In 1990 Taipei provided the backdrop for the Wild Lily student rallies that moved Taiwanese society from one-party rule to multi-party democracy. The city is today home ...

Is Kerry acting as Acheson? Closer US-Japan ties make Korea wary   By Kang Seung-woo     John Kerry U.S. Secretary of State Two top U.S. officials made a rare joint visit to Japan, Thursday, in a show of support for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, often regarded as loose cannon among neighboring nations.   Their trip was, without doubt, aimed at cementing ties with Japan in order to limit China’s growing hegemony.   Here in Korea, the visit to Tokyo by U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, in Seoul earlier this week, and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, created a sense of unease for two reasons.   First, more than before, Abe is trying to ignore Korea and China, nations victimized by the military of Imperial Japan during World War II, and an endorsement from the U.S. is likely to make him bolder.  Second, few would say it out loud but the visit prompted memories of one of Kerry’s predecessors, Dean Acheson, who in 1950 declared a “defensive perimeter” that neglected to include South Korea and T ...
Does China Have A Pacific Strategy Or Are They Bumbling Along? By SYDNEY J. FREEDBERG JR. on September 24, 2013 at 4:30 PM WASHINGTON: Why has China, after a decade of “good neighbor” policies, engaged in high-profile high-seas standoffs with the Philippines and Japan? What is Beijing’s strategic purpose? The most dovish analysts say that China is simply trying, albeit clumsily, to reassert what it considers its rights — its historical rights to territories China once controlled before Western imperialists and Japan stole them away during the “century of humiliation” between 1842 and 1945. The most hawkish analysts say that China is an unappeasable aggressor, like Imperial Japan in the 1930s or even Nazi Germany, and that any concessions by its neighbors or the US will encourage Beijing to grab for more. But both analyses have fatal flaws. That’s my conclusion after watching retired Rear Admiral Michael McDevitt demolish dovish analyses this morning at the Wilson Center — and then asking h ...
From "American Minute" for September 2nd: Imperial Japan had one of the largest maritime empires in world history. In 1910, Imperial Japan annexed Korea, and in 1918 took control of Russian ports in Siberia. In 1937, Imperial Japan's Army killed over 200,000 in Nanking, China. In 1941, over 3,000 Americans died when Imperial Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. In 1942, over 20,000 Americans and Filipinos died on Bataan's Death March, where starving prisoners were marched 65 miles in heat and jungles to a disease infested camp. By 1945, over 100,000 died retaking Okinawa and Pacific islands. Democrat President Harry S Truman made the controversial decision August 6, 1945, to drop the Atomic Bomb. Though devastating, it was estimated to have prevented an additional one million casualties on both sides. On SEPTEMBER 2, 1945, Emperor Hirohito's Imperial forces officially surrendered aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay. An interesting story occurred after the war ended. Mitsuo Fuchida, the Imperial *** ...

East Timor is a small country in Southeast Asia, officially known as Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. The country comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor and the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco. The first inhabitants are thought to be descendant of Australoid and Melanesian peoples. The Portuguese began to trade with Timor by the early 16th century and colonized it throughout the mid-century. Skirmishing with the Dutch in the region eventually resulted in an 1859 treaty for which Portugal ceded the western half of the island. Imperial Japan occupied East Timor during World War II, but Portugal resumed colonial authority after the Japanese surrender. East Timor declared itself independent from Portugal on 28 November 1975, but was invaded and occupied by neighboring Indonesia nine days later. The country was later incorporated as the province of Indonesia afterwards. During the subsequent two-decade occupation, a campaign of pacification ensued. Although Indonesia did make substantial invest ...
Save the Navy’s Mark 7 16-inch Cannons: Big sticks speak loudly 7/03/13 | by Chris Eger Teddy Roosevelt, considered by many to be the father of the huge US fleets of the 20th century, once said, ‘Speak softly, but carry a big stick’. Well, the 16-inch/50 caliber Mark 7 cannons of the US Navy’s Iowa class battleships were the biggest stick the country had for over 50 years. Why In 1938, the world was steaming out of control towards war. Nazi Germany was building a class of huge battleships that carried 15-inch guns. Britain, France, and Italy were responding with huge new warships of their own with similar guns. Imperial Japan, not to be outdone by any navy, was building battleships with 18-inch guns. The US Navy had a few classes of warships that had 16-inch/.45 caliber guns, which were no nerf pistols by any means, but with the naval arms race and the war drums beating, they wanted something bigger and better. This led to the 16-inch/50 caliber Mark 7. These guns are huge, and were the pinnacle o ...

I seem to recall and its direct predecessors did a pretty good job vs Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, Soviet Union.
Once America could defeat the mightiest armies & navies: Imperial Japan. Nazi Germany. Now we are going to meet the Taliban in Qatar and... sue for peace. Baby Boomers. Don't grasp that war is about willpower and winning. Not about cool toys. It's about defeating cultures, societies, countries. Not about defeating armies. These things take willpower over ALL ELSE. But that's difficult & requires character and maturity. It requires stamina and hard decisions. Baby Boomers lack all these things - in government Boomers have spent us into - literally - generations of bankruptcy. In the military they have sacrificed trillions of dollars, thousands of lives and America's leadership in the works. And our political leadership - Obama, Reid, Boehner, Pelosi - are a cohort that would embarrass any kindergarten. Seriously - either we revolt. Or we leave. Belize? Costa Rica? Freedom's light is flickering. Obama is doing all he can to extinguish it ... and no one cares...
US, JAPAN. AUSTRALIA, INDIA, VIETNAM and the PHILIPPINES strengthen each ties over CHINA'S alleged bullying in The south china sea. the United States, for its part, has made clear its opposition to China’s assertiveness at various regional forums by emphasizing its interest in freedom of navigation. The United States recently announced the deployment of littoral combat ships in Singapore in the hope that their presence would have an additional deterrent effect on China’s assertiveness – just as Great Britain deployed HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse at the ‘Gibraltar of the East’ to deter Imperial Japan. On the other hand, since China’s excessive claims have led to incidents such as that in 2001 with the EP-3 spyplane and 2009's USS Impeccable incident, the United States is seeking an incidents at sea agreement with China. China, though, isn’t interested in any such thing as an agreement would justify a continued US presence in the South China Sea. India is another important player in the ...
From "American Minute" for June 4th: n 1942, Imperial Japan invaded Singapore and took around 25,000 prisoners. Next was the Philippines. With Imperial Japan's relentless bombardment by planes and heavy siege guns, President Franklin D. Roosevelt did not want General Douglas MacArthur captured, so he ordered him to leave Corregidor, Philippines, and evacuate to Australia. General Douglas MacArthur obeyed, March 11, 1942, but not without promising, "I shall return." The turning point in the Pacific War began JUNE 4, 1942. American intelligence intercepted Imperial Japan's plans to capture Midway Island and from there, Hawaii and the rest of the Pacific. The outnumbered U.S. Pacific Fleet attempted a desperate ambush of the Imperial Japanese armada, but was losing badly. When the Imperial Japanese fleet suddenly changed its course, the American torpedo dive-bombers searched for it in vain, with many of their escort fighters running out of fuel and ditching in the ocean. Lieutenant-Commander John Waldron, w ...
