25 HIV cases in Ilocos Norte. ABS-CBN TV Patrol News yesterday stated that there are now 25 cases of HIV infected in Ilocos Norte. The carriers were came from Laoag City, Batac City and the tranquil town of Pasuquin. The Provl Health Officer found the situation very alarming and will call an immediate consultation to different stakeholders to private, LGUs and NGOs to discuss and make urgent actions. Personally, the number is growing considering that those who are infected does not want to go for check-up for fear of disclosing their status and still, Ilocos Norte hospitals does not have any facility for medication. Those who are affected is afraid to reveal their status for fear of stigma, discrimnation and judgemental attitudes. The countdown of counting HIV infected persons is fastly tickling. The churches must act now on how to become competent and respond to the situation. Instead of debating whether the LGBT will be forgiven by Jesus or they will face punishment and go to *** WE MUST ADDRESS ...
Student leaders run Laoag government for a day Cherry Joy Discaya-Garma Laoag City, Feb. 20 (PIA) – Student leaders got a taste of how to run a city after assuming various posts at the Laoag City government last Monday. Some 50 students of the Ilocos Norte National High School (INNHS) became junior city officials for a day as part of the observance of the Pamulinawen festival. Laoag City Mayor Chevylle Farinas expressed the hope that a day of public office may contribute to students’ leadership development and to their personal growth. “I just hope that this one day in their lives may bring them learning and that we may give them the best example of leadership because what the youth can see from us is the standard truth for them,” Farinas said. GALARPE ANCESTRY By Lean Galarpe Okey! here's a brief for the Galarpe's. Did you know that we have an Italian blood? Actually the story goes like this. There was a merchant ship that landed in Paoay, Ilocos Norte (paoay is near the sea) sometime in the 19th century. Among the ship's passengers was an Italian guy whose name was Galarpe. In the course of many days and months doing business in Paoay the young italian businessman met a beautiful Ilokana. They soon became friends and their friendship later culminated in marriage. The union bore fruits producing three healthy boys that were to become spreaders of the Galarpe seed all over the Philippines. Those 3 boys are our great great great grandfathers. One of them is Onofre Galarpe who stayed & lived in Paoay (we belong to him) the other 2 moved to Zambales, Bataan & the... last, there in Cagayan De Oro, Mindanao. You will know a Galarpe from his nose, matatangos (italian kasi) at mahaba ang nuo. When my father visited Italy, he tried to find out where we ...

Sitio Remedios is a private village resort situated in an 18,000 square meter of land in Barangay Victoria, Currimao, Ilocos Norte, facing the West Philippine Sea. It is a re-created Ilocano village typical of the mid-fifties, and stands as a reminder of a more genteel era. The houses and other buildings are made of vintage bricks and wood salvaged from mid-century structures mostly from the towns of Ilocos Norte. The lay-out is in a grid typical of Spanish times, the quadricula, respectful of spaces and ancient trees, amid which the structures are built. The houses were constructed by workers coming from the towns where the houses were sourced, guided by architect Rex Hofileña, who without any detailed architectural plans, coached them to surface their innate artistry and skill to build remembrances of their Ilocano past. The Sitio is dedicated to the patron saint of Currimao, St. Michael, the Archangel, and to the Lady of Good Voyage, o Nuestra Señora de los Remedios. Come Visit Currimao, Ilocos Norte

Organic farming advocate in Bacarra by Zac Sarian January 3, 2014 OFF-SEASON DRAGON FRUIT PRODUCTION TECHNIQUE — You will find dragon fruit almost everywhere you go in Ilocos Norte – in backyards and in commercial farms. At the farm of Edita Dacuycuy in Burgos town, about 10 hectares are devoted to the crop. What’s admirable about the lady dragon fruit grower is that she is very receptive to innovations. In fact, she has developed several food and wellness products out of different parts of the dragon fruit plant. She quips that if the coconut is the tree of life, then dragon fruit might as well be the vine of life. One of her latest innovations is lighting her plants from evening to 11 p.m. to induce the plants to flower during the short-day months. Photo shows the plants under the evening lighting regimen.

President Ferdinand Marcos A Thesis About the Marcos Truth I. Introduction Posted by rommelsibay on October 14, 2009 This thesis is on our great President Ferdinand Marcos. As i researched about this great man i realized that there were a lot of things that aren’t commonly known to the public that I thought must be shared. The topics i will tackle are quite comprehensive but nonetheless I hope that it will open some peoples eyes to see how much of a visionary President Marcos was. Archive for the ‘Part II’ Category II. History of a Visionary Posted by rommelsibay on October 14, 2009 Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralin Marcos was born on September 11, 1917 in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte to Mariano Marcos and Josefa Edralin naming their son after Ferdinand VII of Spain. The Marcos’ family is said to have been originally of Ilocano decent; Taguktok and traces their roots to Japanese and Chinese ancestry. Biography | Resume In his 17 years of public service, Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr. has achieved for himself a distinguished record as a lawmaker, government official, and public administrator, most of which were accomplished away from the spotlight. Bongbong became drawn to the challenges of public service early on in life, having observed how both his parents devoted their lives to public service for more than two decades. At a very young age of 23, he was elected vice-governor of Ilocos Norte. The events that transpired after the EDSA Revolution in 1986 forced the Marcoses to leave the country in exile. While he was away, Bongbong's thoughts nevertheless remained focused on being able to serve his country, as he continued to study and develop his skills while aspiring to be able to come home to the Philippines soon. Braving the possibility of arrest from the new regime, Bongbong was the first among his family to return from exile in 1992. No sooner had he stepped back on Philippine soil than he took ...

DENR declares dipterocarp forest in Ilocos Norte as wildlife critical habitat The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has declared a dipterocarp forest in Adams town in Ilocos Norte as a critical habitat for wildlife species. The forest, which has a total land area of 3,250 hectares (32.5 sq. km.), has been named Adams Wildlife Critical Habitat (AWCH) under DENR Administrative Order (DAO) No. 2013-XX signed by Secretary Ramon J.P. Paje. Paje said declaring the area as a wildlife critical habitat would help protect and conserve Ilocos Norte’s “last frontier of dipterocarp forest,” and all floral and faunal species living there. Dipterocarps refer to a family of hardwood, tropical trees like mahogany. The lush forests of the AWCH are known to be habitats of threatened species such as the Philippine falconet, Philippine hanging parakeet, Philippine brown deer, Philippine warty pig, as well as jade vines, giant tree ferns, and other dipterocarp trees. “The DAO will enjoin the parti ...

Monday, September 20, 2010 Marcos never left the building Thirty-eight years ago, Ferdinand Marcos stamped his foot on the dishonour roll of dangerous and invasive species of world dictators. With the proclamation of martial law on September 21, 1972, Marcos literally obliterated the freedoms the Filipinos fought hard to achieve from the 1896 Revolution against Spain to emancipation from the Japanese occupation after the Second World War. For almost two decades, Marcos would rule with an iron fist, putting to prisons those who criticized and opposed his regime. The People Power Revolution of 1986 deposed him, forcing him to sneak out to Hawaii, which was as far as he could enter the United States, his principal supporter who propped up his dictatorial and repressive regime. Marcos’ eldest daughter, Imee, now governor of Ilocos Norte, has called for a “thorough and objective study” of her father’s rule that would take into account the merits of the martial law period and not just its flaws. Imee br ...
Multilingual Gov. Imee Marcos: Best to Happen for Ilocos Norte in a Long While Aug 12 Governor Imee Marcos of Ilocos Norte who is multilingual (she speaks several languages including French, Spanish, Latin, Arabic, Portuguese, aside Ilocano, Waray, English, Tagalog and basic Mandarin and Japanese) is arguably one of the best pols to come along in a long while. Her magnetic personality and vibrant leadership suits Ilocos Norte so well, especially at a time when it needs to shake off politics-as-usual in order to awaken and energize ALL municipalities and their constituents and participate in her “Paspas dur-as” (speedy progress) program as initiated during her first term as governor. Her ability to attract business investors, her prodigious grasp of practically all facets of government and her strong leadership suits Ilocos Norte perfectly, especially at a time when the province is transitioning from an agricultural and rural landscape to a service-directed, diversifying, and urbanizing economy. (Admin) BADO-BADOC FESTIVAL Badoc Badoc is known to be one of the oldest towns in the province of Ilocos Norte and the birthplace of Juan Luna, the most famous Filipino Painter. The Bado-Badoc festival celebrates the rich history of this town named after a humble grass called bado badoc which was growing abundantly along its river banks. Not long after the the first mass in the town celebrated on June 24, 1572, the Spaniards settled and established a well structured town center. Badoc developed into an opulent and peaceful Spanish town manifested by the stone and brick structures scattered around the poblacion. All of the town’s blessings are attributed to the La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc, the patroness of Ilocos Norte. Estimated to be 400 years old, the revered image of La Virgen Milagrosa is enshrined and venerated in the more than 200 year old imposing brick-and- stone baroque church. Now referred to as a God sent miracle, the image was found, together with a life size crucifix (enshrined in neighbor ...

Press Statement 28 October 2013 Senator Ferdinand “Bong-Bong” R. Marcos, Jr., who is currently in Ilocos Norte to cast his vote in the 2013 Barangay Elections and to participate in a previously scheduled committee hearing for the Committee on Agriculture, expressed shock and disbelief upon learning that his name has once again been dragged in the alleged release of PhP 24.25 million to an NGO named Masaganang Ani para sa Magsasaka Foundation, Inc. (MAMFI) for supposed livelihood projects in Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental in 20111. The article was based solely on an Affidavit of a certain Marina Sula, who stated that the alleged PhP 24.25 million transaction was the only transaction reported to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in 2011 by the said NGO. Senator Marcos immediately asked his office to look into this new revelation and per the initial investigation conducted by his office, it was revealed that: • There is no document or record pertain ...

During the remainder of my sabbatical, I intend to visit all the provinces of the country. I am currently counting which ones I have gone to so I can prepare my list. How about this criteria: I must have spent a night anywhere in the province? If I adopt this standard, that means that I have not really gone to provinces that I have just traversed or where I just ate in one of its restaurants like Tarlac, Pampanga, La Union, and Cavite. Furthermore, I was born in Basco, Batanes but the last time I slept there was when I was a year old. Okay, Batanes is a no-brainer; I need to return there. Let's list where I have gone to: Agusan (Butuan), Aklan, Albay, Bataan, Basilan, Batangas, Benguet, Bohol, Bulacan, Cagayan, Camarines Sur, Capiz, Cebu, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Ifugao, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Iloilo, Isabela, Leyte, Misamis Oriental, *** Occidental, *** Oriental, Nueva Vizcaya, Palawan, Quezon, Rizal, Siquijor, South Cotabato, and Zambales. Yes. ABSOLUTELY !!! There are so many changes in Marcos Country (Ilocos Norte), in Bongbong' Administration as Governor, the province of Ilocos Norte transformed from class C to class A province. And in Imee's Administration, the province of Ilocos Norte is now a fully ISO 9001-2008 Certified. Means, the leadership of Ilocos Norte is "world class and most progressive compared to other province of Philippines".

JOSEFA LLANES ESCODA (1898-1945) Florence Nightingale of the Philippines Great civic leader, social worker, suffragette and war heroine, Josefa Llanes Escoda or Pepa, as she was affectionately called, was born on September 20, 1898 in Dingras, Ilocos Norte. She was the eldest child of Gabriel Llanes, a music teacher and Mercedes Madamba, a sweet and loving woman who instilled in the minds of her children the true Christian idea of service. Her only brother was Florencio, and her five sisters were Luisa, Elvira, Rosario, Purita and Eufrosina. As a child, Pepa was *** naturally active and precocious. In her school days, she never let a day pass without reading her books and studying her lessons. At the time Josefa was in the grade school, a strong typhoon hit her hometown. Although the town folks had been forewarned of the impending calamity, Josefa insisted on going to school that day. Her mother stopped her, but she stubbornly said, “ I’ll not let the weather keep me away from school,” that’s how ...

I love how everybody has their own version of the truth. Years ago I read that school textbooks in Ilocos Norte are modified to reflect the Marcos point of view. I used to volunteer in Asian Arts Museum here in San Francisco. As I was introduced on my first day around the place, I noticed that the contributions of Filipino American to this Museum is a little. A morsel, only less in portion. I am so frustrated as I compare the arts of the other Southeast Asians participators to our Filipino Arts contributed to the whole American Society. In my month of internship work here in the museum, I have already learned a lot through my subtle observations. As I learned what the DOCENTS DO AND THE CURATORS DO...I WANTED TO BE ONE OF THEM. I wanted to be a curator and go to the Philippines and collect "VINTAGE" arts from all over the old of town of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao like Iloilo, Ilocos Norte, Sulu, Vigan, Bicol, and Zamboanga, and bring them here in the Asian Arts Museum to add to their Filipino Collections of Arts. Maligayan Araw ng Kasarinlan, Pilipinas! Monsignor Gregorio L. Aglipay dedicated his life in the pursuit of religious freedom from the hands of the Spanish priest. During his college days, he met Jose Rizal at the campus of the Dominican College of San JUan de Letran in Manila. They shared sentiments and feelings of the acts of barbarism and explotation by the Sapniards. Rizal convince him to take up priesthood. He was not at all interested to become a priest but Jose Rizal countered that the country was in need of a priest who can penetrate the priesthood kingdom of the Spaniards. GMA NEWS: JUNE 11, 2013 After 9 years, Pinoy TNT loses immigration battle in the US By NOEL PANGILINAN Like most undocumented immigrants in the United States, Filipino Richard Cuanang is optimistic that a comprehensive immigration reform bill now pending in the U.S. Congress will be passed into law this year. Unlike most of the estimated 11 million people who are in the U.S. illegally, however, Cuanang will not be able to benefit from the proposed law that seeks to legalize their stay in the U.S. Cuanang, who hails from the northern province of Ilocos Norte, is actually leaving the U.S. and flying back to the Philippines on Sept. 5. After staying illegally in the U.S. for nine years, Cuanang was finally caught and has been on deportation proceedings since 2011. Rather than be forcibly deported by an immigration court and sent home in handcuffs like a criminal, Cuanang opted for voluntary deportation. “No regrets,” Cuanang said at New York City’s Penn Station while waiting for his Amtrak train that w ...

Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) is located in the north-central part of Luzon and encompasses most of the areas within the Cordillera Central mountain range of Luzon. It is bounded by Ilocos Norte and Cagayan in the north, Pangasinan and Nueva Viscaya in the south, Cagayan Valley in the east, and the Ilocos region in the west. The region is dubbed as the “Watershed Cradle of North Luzon” because it hosts 9 major rivers that provide continuous water for irrigation and energy for Northern Luzon. MANILA, Philippines - An earthquake measuring magnitude 5.4 rocked parts of Northern Luzon yesterday morning, but did not cause any damage or injuries, state seismologists said. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded the tremor at 10:24 a.m. and it was centered 30 kilometers southwest of Laoag City in Ilocos Norte. It was felt at Intensity 4 in Bangued, Abra and Narvacan, Ilocos Sur; and Intensity 3 in Sinait, Santo Domingo, Magsingal, San Idelfonso, Bantay, Santa, Caoayan, Vigan, Santa Catalina, and San Vicente, all in Ilocos Sur; Callao and Peñablanca in Cagayan; and Laoag City; and Intensity 2 in Bucay, Abra. Phivolcs said the tremor, which had a depth of nine kilometers and was tectonic in origin, is expected to generate aftershocks. KAKAMPI MO ANG BATAS.SYNDICATED, ENGLISH. 26 MAY 2013 Student suicides: who to blame? LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” (Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, in Matthew 16:26, the Holy Bible). -ooo- ANOTHER STUDENT KILLS SELF FOR LACK OF MONEY FOR TUITION FEES: “Another one bites the dust” is a line from a fast-paced song I used to hear in the 1980s, and it could very well describe the suicide committed by a 15-year old Ilocano boy, Denmark Gabug, of Bgy. San Lorenzo, San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, last week. Indeed, another youthful life got wasted simply because he and his family did not have the money to pay for his tuition fees to send him to college. Since March of this year alone, three other Filipino minors killed themselves because they either did not also have money for further studies, or they failed to get passing grades in their courses.
