Summary of Patience Jonathan’s visit to the founder of Adoration Ministries, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka: • Mbaka proclaimed that those fighting Jonathan would meet their down fall, saying that Greatness comes from God. • He also said that APC posed no threat to GEJ in Enugu, saying that people of the state view the opposition party as Boko Haram party. • He Insist that Jonathan MUST be re-elected for a second tenure • Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu led in the donation of N40 million for the completion of the permanent site of the Adoration ministry. If we don’t hear anything from the Bishop for a given period of time, we shall redirect our verbal artillery to Mbaka to explain to us whether he was ordained a priest or a politician. Enugu PDP crisis deepens as NWC shuns Chime in Abuja. Reported in Guardians Governor Sullivan Chime’s senatorial ambition a suffered setback Tuesday as the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) failed to receive him at its national secretariat in Abuja. The Enugu governor is seeking to replace the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who is equally seeking a third term at the Senate. Chime arrived at the PDP Secretariat as early as 11.00a.m, hoping to see the NWC or the National Chairman, Dr. Adamu Mu’azu, but could not, even after waiting for over five hours. The crisis rocking the Enugu chapter of the PDP heightened with last weekend’s curious resignation of the chairman, Mr. Vita Abba. It was learnt that the party leadership had pleaded with Chime to drop the impeachment of the former Deputy Governor, Sunday Onyebuchi, all to no avail. It was further learnt that the crisis deepened after Chime’s insistence that Ekweremadu should not return to the Senate, jus ...

Nigeria’s Imperial Family By Babayola Toungo Posted: May, 10 2014, 7:05PM By Babayola Toungo Nigeria is in trouble. Big trouble. We are in a ship in turbulent waters with a big, ugly iceberg ahead of us and our captain is claiming not to see it. Worse still, his crewmen are telling him that the road onward is clear. That the next port of call, 2015, can be reached even if all those who paid (with their votes) for a smooth cruise will die or fall in the water before the destination is reached. While the captain is playing dumb, his hired rabble-rousers are busy adding more coal to the engine while the ship is fast cutting short the distance between the ship and the iceberg. Some of the passengers, who may be on a death wish trip, are urging the captain to maintain course and whoever criticizes his leadership of the ship should be thrown to the shark-invested ocean. I am at a lost at how a country of 170 million people got saddled with a president with an addled brain – a country of brilliant and i ...
MAY 12 IS Senator Ike Ekweremadu'S BIRTHDAY AND WE WISH TO CELEBRATE HIM IN ADVANCE. Ike Ekweremadu is a Nigerian lawyer from Enugu State and a member of the People's Democratic Party who has been a senator since May 2003 and is now Deputy Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the second consecutive time. He holds both Bachelors and Masters Degree in Law from the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1987.[1] In 2002 Chief Ike Ekweremadu was appointed Secretary to the Enugu State Government, and on April 12, 2003 he was elected to the Nigerian Senate. At one time he was the leading contender to become the southeast region candidate for the senate presidency that year, but was replaced by Adolphus Wabara, who went on to be elected senate president. Imo PDP Sensitisation Rally Will Rekindle Hope, Recover Party – Ekweremadu The Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, said that PDP rally in Imo was to rekindle hope and recover the state for the party come 2015. Ekweremadu stated this on Saturday in Owerri at a rally organised to welcome some Imo indigenes back to the PDP. He thanked President Goodluck Jonathan for his visit saying it was an indication of his love for people of the South-East of the country. The Deputy Senate President said the turnout of Imo people to the rally was also an indication that the state was already back as a PDP state. Ekweremadu, who said that PDP had been revived to accommodate everyone, assured the president of the votes of people from the South East states. He commended Imo people for their support to the president and the PDP adding “today, the president will leave here assured that in 2015 he has the votes of the entire South East people.” Also, the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr Emeka Ihedi ...
Why We Can’t Read Defectors’ Letter Now – Senate The hope of the 11 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators asking to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was dashed yesterday as the Senate unequivocally declared that their letter would not be read on its floor. The Senate said its reason was that the Senate president, David Mark, was still exploring legal interpretations, since the matter is still pending in court. The upper house will also meet with inspector-general of police Mohammed Abubakar on Tuesday next week and screen the ministerial nominees the next day. The Senate, for the second time in two days, went into a closed-door session to trash out issues concerning the defection of the senators to the APC. The first was last Tuesday when the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, presided. Senate spokesman Enyinnaya Abaribe told a press conference shortly after plenary preceded by a prolonged executive session that senators as lawmakers should not be law breakers, adding tha ...
The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu has openly dared the gov of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime. The Deputy Senate President drew the battle line on Saturday in Enugu. Ekweremadu stated that no one can stop him from returning to senate in 2015. Gov Chime and Ekweremadu are from the same senatorial Zone, Enugu west. Gov Chime has indicated interest to vie for the same senatorial zone where Ekweremadu is currently the senator representing the Zone. This seeming war between Chime and Ekweremadu may consume the deputy gov, Mr Sunday Onyebuchi who is said to be in Ekweremadu's camp. Few days ago, the chief of staff to Chime, Mrs Ifeoma Nwobodo sent some state officials of environmental Sanitation against the deputy gov. The officials went to deputy gov's lodge and destroyed his poultry and carted away over 3000 eggs. While this rofo rofo is going on in PDP, APGA Enugu State has started mobilisation and sensitization of the public ahead of 2015.

Senate confirms appointment of service chiefs THE Senate, on Thursday, confirmed the nominations of the service chiefs, based on the recommendation of its joint committee on Defence and Army, Navy and Air Force. The confirmation of the service chiefs was, however, in flagrant disregard to the directive of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to its members in the National Assembly, asking them to block all legislative bills and approval of all Jonathan nominees for appointment as service chiefs and minister, as well as passage of the 2014 budget. President Goodluck Jonathan, on January 21, wrote the Senate, requesting for confirmation of the four nominees, to wit, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, Chief of Defence Staff; Major-General Kenneth Minimah, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Usman Jibril, Chief of Naval Staff, as well as Air Vice Marshal Adesola Amosu, Chief of Air Staff. The request by President Goodluck Jonathan was in line with Section 218 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the presid ...

YISAU NEWS UPDATE; The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has condemned the State Security Service (SSS) for questioning former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Nasir el-Rufai. The CNPP described the action as bias and unfair. It added that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, had made similar statements, like many notable Nigerians, who had not been summoned. The CNPP urged the SSS to “restrain in making mountains out of mole hills and embarking on selective amnesia, which casts our security agencies in partisan colours”. In a statement in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Osita Okechukwu, the conference said: “The CNPP has read carefully the statement credited to Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, in which he said there would be violence, if the 2015 elections are not credible, free and fair. “We are at a loss how this nimble conditional statement constitutes security threat and is rated weighty enough to attra ...

Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Friday morning... 1. In the news is President Jonathan’s appeal to members of the National Assembly, yesterday when he asked them to expedite action on the 2014 appropriation bill so he could meet up with the needs of the people. Jonathan’s appeal became necessary even as some lawmakers from the opposition APC and his own party, PDP have termed the proposed budget as ‘anti-people’, calling for the head of the Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo Iwaela. 2. Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has given a special reason why he gave up his ambition in 2003 when he had the chance to contest against his then estranged boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo. NASS to amend electoral laws before 2015 elections —EKWEREMADU Deputy Senate President and Chairman, Senate Committee on the Review of 1999 Constitution, Ike Ekweremadu, has assured that the National Assembly will strengthen Nigeria’s electoral laws before the 2015 general elections. He said the development was aimed at ridding Nigerian politics and electoral system of all forms of impunity. Senator Ekweremadu spoke yesterday in Abuja, while delivering a keynote address at the 11th Daily Trust Dialogue. He regretted that the fall of the nation’s previous democratic eras was largely attributable to political impunity and flagrant abuse of the electoral process. Political impunity Ekweremadu also identified what he called political impunity as greatest enemy of the country’s democracy, noting that wrong notions had continually blurred the appreciation of the true nature and enormity of impunity in politics. According to him, the political system is just a fraction of the whole body polity. Continuin ...

Sen. Ike Ekweremadu speaking at the National Synposium marking Nigerias 2012 Democracy day
It has been contended in several quarters that the proposed National Conference by the Federal Government of Nigeria would conflict with the constitutional sovereignty vested in the National Assembly. In recent times, some members of the 7th National Assembly have express zealous contestation of the investiture of sovereignty, which they maintain is the exclusive preserved of the National Assembly. According to distinguished Senator Ike Ekweremadu: “You don’t wake up when you have constitutional sovereignty in place and begin to say you want a sovereign National Conference. This is like imposing the will of some people on everybody without any legal basis for what they are doing. Otherwise, we are calling for anarchy.” My take on the issue is that the Distinguished Senator fails to recognize the fact that constitutional sovereignty of the National Assembly cannot override the fundamental right of Nigerians to gather and discuss issues bordering on their well –being and national interest. He also . ...
Edemobi Ikechukwu Wrote: For political pundits in Enugu State who understand the polemics of power and its variant dynamics,it will be foolhardy to think that the deal,on which part of the zone will produce the successor to Governor Sullivan Chime in the 2015 guber election was already signed, sealed and delivered. With a subtle objection by the Deputy President of the senate,Chief ike Ekweremadu,to the declaration by Governor Chime that the seat will move to Enugu North senatorial zone(Nsukka) and as was ratified by the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) caucus in the state, observers knew that all was not well.Of course the Senator has the constitutional right to contest the election not minding that chime who currently holds power is from the same senatorial district.Just on November 21,his foot soldiers and supporters held meetings simultaneously in the three senatorial district in the state with a commom message.Sen Ekweremadu's intention no doubt further heightened the expectation of the people of Greate ...

2014: PIB, budget, ministerial screening, others, take center stage at Senate As the Senate reconvenes from its Christmas and New Year break next week, the red chamber would be saddled with the issues of the 2014 budget, Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB, screening and confirmation of new ministerial nominees, amongst others. After about four weeks’ break, the National Assembly, albeit, the Senate will resume plenary on Tuesday, January 14 and as it is traditional with the red chamber, the first week will be expended on not too important issues, except perhaps on the consideration of communications from the President, particularly regarding the confirmation of some statutory appointments. However, by the upper week, legislative tempo is expected to gradually peak. The lawmakers would be more seriously engaged with the issue of the 2014 budget proposals. For the first time since the commencement of the current democratic dispensation, the National Assembly merely struggled to receive the budget estimates of t ...

THE PERSONALITIES THAT WILL SHAPE THE POLITICAL SCENE IN 2014. 2014 Personalities. Although your Everyday people, in this New year- either by acts of ommission or commission, they are people to watch, writes olawale Olaleye The new Year is both instructive and significant in the life of the nation. For this year, therefore, a lot of activities are billed to come up and shape events that would ultimately navigate Tue stability process on the country. For one, the year is primed to feature the concluding aspect of the constitution amendment process: it would settle the issue of National Conference: see to more political 're-alignment: superintend over a sustained budget controversy even as it would oversee governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States, amongst several other issues meant to give characters to the new year. Importantly, however, some persons will play active roles in how events will turn out in the new year if not drive the process. It is against this backdrop that such persons are identifi ...
WHITHER Senator Ike Ekweremadu IN 2015? Senator Ike Ekweremadu, the youthful, suave, diplomatic, tactful, debonair, urbane, maverick, Enugu State born Deputy Senate President is a consummate politician and has no doubts contributed greatly to the political experience in this 4th republic. A consummate lawyer who brings his legal knowledge to bear in the discharge of his legislative duties, the previously unknown senator has worked himself up the power ladder and has become a rallying point at home and on the national level. In a clime where politics is a profession and parliamentarians can serve for life, Ekweremadu could have been described as a thorough bred professional. But this is Nigeria which offers no other hope outside politics; where only politicians win and the rest lose; where the winner takes all and the loser goes home with nothing; where who you are counts much less than whom you know; where cognate experience can easily be sacrificed on the alter of political expediency; where turn by tu . ...

“JONATHAN REPLIES OBASANJO”. REALLY! DID HE? Category: Opinion Published on Tuesday, 31 December 2013 05:00 Written by Abu Najakku Hits: 108 In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. -JF Kennedy: Inaugural Address, Jan 20, 1961. Before it is obfuscated, one of the loudest statements President Olusegun Obasanjo made in his December 2 letter, covering about one third of it, is that any attempt by Jonathan to extend his rule “will be fatally and morally flawed”. Sadly, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan doesn’t think so and his reply to OBJ’s letter has done nothing to allay fears that he is not interested in the presidency beyond his current mandate or that the 2015 election will be any better than those before it. Today, our freedom of political choice is increasingly being circumscribed by a desperate administration intent on prolonging its lifespan. Already, the rude and shameless suggestion by none o ...

HOME NEWS Q & A JOBS MORE Mixed marks for David’s Senate in 2013 on december 27, 2013 at 12:48 am in politics By JOSEPH ERUNKE Upon resumption in 2013, shortly after the Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Senate did not pretend that it was out to redouble its level of representation to the people. David Mark Within a week of getting back from the holidays, the upper legislative chamber appeared to most watchers that it was an institution with a listening ear when, following the hue and cry over some sordid developments in the labour market, it mandated its Committees on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs and Employment, Labour and Productivity to begin full-scale investigation into allegations of bribery and corruption in the employment processes in the Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, in particular and ministries, departments and other agencies of government in general, with a view to bringing those involved to book. During the committees’ assignment, startling revelations were ...

President Jonathan Deserves A Second Term By Ben Nanaghan Many state governors in Nigeria have now abandoned their primary constitutional assignments and responsibilities and have veered into areas of political opportunism and ego aggrandisement. If not why have so many governors especially from the north arrogated the duties of the INEC Chairman to themselves? They now decide or determine who should or should not contest an election. The power of franchise is now theirs for executive dispensation. These restive and rebellious governors have now abandoned their various states gallivanting from state to state seeking relevance in the corridors of power in Abuja to concretise their individual presidential ambitions. What effrontery has emboldened these rebellious 7 governors (AKAR 7) to think that they have the absolute and inalienable right to force a president on Nigerians? Or what gives them the impudence to think that they can speak for 167 million Nigerians? Nigerians have already seen through the smok ...

"I will always hold Senator Ken Nnamani [Enugu] credible for his singular act of standing up to Obasanjo’s third term drive and wish. Were it under now Senate President David Mark [Benue] with deal seeking and making Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu [Enugu], a deal maker of sort, Obasanjos wish would have been endorsed: in the esprit de corps sense. Obasanjo is excused from his conducts during military rule 1976-1979, because he was Lord and a rod. But in civilian time, he was BAD and VERY BAD, and unconscionably and inexcusably UNCIVIL and UNRULY. "Here are a handful: "1. 1999-2007, Naira lost value and continue to lose value despite parading Soludo and Okonjo-Iweala – PhDs; the latter acclaimed World Bank fixer who is more about World Bank running Nigeria and cutting deals."-Ejike Okpa 11.
National Conference should end 2014 - National Publicity Secretary, ACF, Anthony Sani The umbrella body of northern Nigeria, Arewa Consultative Forum, has backed President Goodluck Jonathan's scheduling of the proposed National Conference for early 2014. It, however, urged the Federal Government to ensure the conclusion of the exercise by June 2014 to pave the way for the 2015 general elections. The forum said it was part of its recommendation to Senator Femi Okuruoumu-led Presidential Advisory Committee on the National Dialogue, which was saddled with the responsibility of designing a framework for the conference, that the exercise should be concluded by then. While receiving the 4,000-page report of the committee from Okurounmu, President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday said the National Conference would hold early next year. The President added that he had already directed the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to make adequate financial provisions for the smooth take-off of the conference .. ...

Excerpts: On Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal’s comment that the executive arm of government does not have the capacity to fight corruption It is a very weighty statement coming from the fourth man of government. I can’t verify or vouch for the statement and its accuracy but if I were the president, I will take it extremely seriously. And I think I will be concerned about whether or not the anti corruption strategy or policy is working. From the time of being the NBA president I have always advised that the anti corruption strategy is weak, and the reason why I felt it was weak is I feel ...

The Speaker of the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States, (ECOWAS), Senator Ike Ekweremadu, yesterday commended ECOWAS and the people of Mali for the success recorded so far in the Malian presidential election. Ekweremadu described the election as “free, fair, and credible.” He noted that the peaceful conduct of the poll was a boost for democracy and peace in Mali and the entire West Africa. LEADERS If gold rusts, what will iron do? Nigerian proverb Nelson Mandela died last week just when Nigerians were getting seriously agitated by reports that the Deputy President President, Ike Ekweremadu was hinting at the possiblity that legislators may seek a two year extension for elected officials to ease the current tensions around the president’s ambitions in 2015. Mandela’s death has taken the sting out of the angry reactions to the Senator's comments that could be considerably worse, but Nigerians will get over the mourning of Mandela and fully engage this potential nightmare. Last week was a very sad week for Nigerians. Like all Africans and the International community, Nigerians deeply felt the loss of one the greatest humans to live. Mandela had been very much a part of the lives of generations of Nigerians. Most Nigerians over 30 shared his life aspirations and dreams, of setbacks and deprivations, and of renewed hope and struggles and victories. He, the ANC and the people of South Afric .. ...

FUND YOUR FAITH •Report that the FG may stop sponsoring pilgrims is cheering OFFICIAL funding of pilgrimages has become a distracting influence on the polity and sadly, an avoidable drain on public till. We are however elated by the report that the Federal Government may stop annual funding of pilgrimages. Though not yet conclusive, the initiative is quite belated. Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Senate President, at a recent stakeholders’ summit organised by the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission unveiled: “…we have a challenge facing us, as there are indications that the Federal Government may stop funding pilgrimage activities… This is understandable given the need to separate religion from the state. Pilgrimage is a personal and spiritual matter.’’ To us, religion, like pilgrimage, is a personal issue between God and man and such affairs, especially in a secular state like Nigeria, should not be allowed to overburden her governance. But at the current rate, the reality is that a sizeable chun ...

2015 polls will be free, fair –Jonathan DENNIS AGBO April 2, 2013 No Comments » President Goodluck Jonathan has once again promised that the 2015 general elections would be free and fair. Jonathan said that there was no alternative to fair election, given the premise that there could not be peace without justice. The President, who spoke yesterday at Mpu, Enugu State, said it was almost impossible to guarantee good governance without free and fair election. According to him, it is the level of political manipulation that breeds bickering among politicians. The President was at Mpu, Aninri Local Government, for the dedication of the All Saints Anglican Covenant Church built by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu. Jonathan said his administration was determined to make a difference in the lives of Nigerians.
