MUSIC HISTORY 101 JANUARY 17, 1948 - Born on this day in : Guitarist *** TAYLOR Best known as a former member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (1966–1969) and the Rolling Stones (1969–1974), Taylor is regarded by many Stones aficionados as the best guitarist ever to play with the band, and appeared on some of their classic albums including "Let It Bleed", "Sticky Fingers" and "Exile on Main St". Taylor was born to a working-class family in Welwyn Garden City, but was raised in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England, where his father worked as a fitter for De Havilland aircraft company. He began playing guitar at age nine, learning to play from his mother's younger brother. As a teenager, he formed bands with schoolmates and started performing concerts under names such as The Juniors and the Strangers. They also appeared on television and put out a single. Part of the band was recruited for a new group called The Gods, which included Ken Hensley (later of Uriah Heep fame). In 1966, The Gods opened for Cream a ...

Today at 11:28 PM THOMAS STANLEY RAYMOND HAFEY- TOMMY. Terrific, Sensational, Richmond, Health Fanatic. Terrific. Optimistic, Magnificient, Marvellous, Yellow and Black. Tom Hafey came to Richmond in 1966 when I was only 10 and I followed Richmond to 1976 when I was 20. I had posters of Kevin Bartlett, Francis Bourke, Roger Dean, Royce Hart Kevin Sheedy, and Ian Stewart on my bedroom door and Scalens postcards of many others as well. The centre line of Barrot, Bourke and Clay was the best and even better when Ian Stewart replaced Bill Barrot who I was sad to see go to St Kilda and Carlton. I also followed Michael Green, Neil Balme and even Big Whale Roberts and he would of won a Brownlow had he played more games and was not injured. I have cuttings of Tom Hafey since 1965 when he was signed at Richmond. I also have the souveneir book of 1973 when Richmond played Fitzroy in front of the Queen at VFL Park. Derek Jeter grounds into a double play, second baseman Howie Kendrick to shortstop Erick Aybar to first baseman Albert Pujols. Ichiro Suzuki out at 2nd. Inning over. NO ONE SCORED! (Girardi, yelled something about a strike call to the Plate Umpire and was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. He got in the Umps face and got his money’s worth. Good old fashioned Manager/Umpire interaction.)

In June 1964, The Rolling Stones entered Chicago's famous Chess Studio. While there, they recorded their original song "Empty Heart", which they credited to their alter-persona Nanker Phelge. As a slice of electric country blues it doesn't really go anywhere but boasts terrific guitar parts by Brian Jones and Keith Richards, harmonica in the distance and Ian Stewart on organ. They never played it live and although it appeared on the 12x5 album, it has been largely overlooked by them. There's a rousing version by the MC5 and, NORTON RECORDS has released it by Question Mark & The Mysterians on their Stones 45's series, as well as on their fabulous Thee Midniters "In Thee Midnite Hour!" release and here's this tasty instrumental from the NORTON RECORDS' LP "Unreformed" by the Coba Seas.

It didn't take long before *** Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Ian Stewart were joining in on stage and later Buddy Guy and Lefty Dizz also played their part.

Befitting its title, the song is based on one of the most popular structures in rock and roll, the 12 bar blues progression (in A). "Rock and Roll" stands as one of the best-known songs in the band's catalogue. Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has said that this song came to be written as a spontaneous jam session, whilst the band were trying (and failing) to finish the track "Four Sticks". Drummer John Bonham played the introduction to Little Richard's "Keep a Knockin'" and Page added a guitar riff. The tapes were rolling and fifteen minutes later the basis of the song was down. Said Page: “We were recording another number [Four Sticks]; we’d just finished a take ...

Government figures, including state attorney-general Jarrod Bleijie, have said that the criminal gang laws have reduced Gold Coast crime since they were introduced last year. Bleijie claimed recently that: The facts speak for themselves. Statistically we have seen major armed assaults, armed robberies on the GC [Gold Coast] reduced by some 43%, we’ve seen a reduction on personal assaults of 25%. These are firm but fair laws and they are working. In fact, Queensland Police Service (QPS) mypolice data from September 2013 to January 2014 shows there has been a 12% increase in relation to overall crime on the Gold Coast. The data also shows that since September 2013, all assaults (there is no specific category for “personal” assaults) have risen by 37% ...

For all those who knew and loved Ian Stewart, there will be a memorial party at the Hilldale Great Dane on Sunday, February 23rd from 4-8pm. We will have trivia throughout the party and lots of food, and of course, bacon. There will be sodas and other non-alcoholic beverages free, and a cash bar. If you feel like bringing a dessert to share, please do! Also, if you have digital pictures of Ian, if you could send them my way via my email (if you don't have it, message me and I'll share), that would be wonderful. Thank you all, and we hope to see you there. Let's celebrate the life of our dear friend.
Attention cybersphere people. Ian Stewart aka Darius recently took his own life. I can't pretend we were super close but from what I remember he was a good guy when I did get to battle with him online, I do remember him being really fun at MB2K. There will be a memorial service in Madison on Sunday, if I can get a co-pilot I'm going.

In Pursuit of the Unknown, celebrated mathematician Ian Stewart uses a handful of mathematical equations to explore the vitally important connections between math and human progress. We often overlook the historical link between mathematics and technological advances, says Stewart-but this connection is integral to any complete understanding of human history. Equations are modeled on the patterns we find in the world around us, says Stewart, and it is through equations that we are able to make sense of, and in turn influence, our world. Stewart locates the origins of each equation he presents-from Pythagoras's Theorem to Newton's Law of Gravity to Einstein's Theory of Relativity-within a particular historical moment, elucidating the development of mathematical and philosophical thought necessary for each equation's discovery. None of these equations emerged in a vacuum, Stewart shows; each drew, in some way, on past equations and the thinking of the day. In turn, all of these equations paved the way for m ...
You believe in a God who plays dice, and I in complete law and order. - Albert Einstein, Letter to Max Born "There is a theory that history moves in cycles. But, like a spiral staircase, when the course of human events come full circle it does so on a new level. The 'pendulum swing' of cultural changes does not simply repeat the same events over and over again. Whether or not the rheory is true, it serve as a metaphor to focu our attention." - Ian Stewart

JANUARY 1999 10 January: Foreign Minister Amara Essy of Ivory Coast and his Togolese counterpart, Joseph Kokou Koffigoh, arrived in Guinea Sunday to confer with Guinean President Lansana Conte, on bringing about a cease-fire in the Sierra Leone conflict. Aides said they would fly to Lungi International Airport on Monday. "We are going to meet the two parties in the conflict," Koffigoh said. RUF commander Col. Sam "Maskita" Bockarie said Sunday he would not leave his stronghold to meet regional mediators or for a face-to-face meeting with detained RUF leader Corporal Foday Sankoh. "Why should I leave my ground? ...I am not going to accept that. There is a trap," he said. Bockarie also asserted that the RUF was holding 200 Nigerian ECOMOG soldiers captured during the fighting. "We have a lot of them as prisoners of war...we are feeding them with rice and gari and the like," he said. "Now we have over 200." Hundreds of Nigerian troops arrived at Lungi International Airport overnight on Saturday to reinforce ...

Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart has apologised to a recreational motorcycle rider who said he was “harassed” by police when he was pulled over by officers on Saturday.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH -POLICE MUST BE ACCOUNTABLE. Qld Police Commissioner Ian Stewart is the man in charge of the Qld Police lawless rabble harassing innocent riders. WE DEMAND STEWART BE SACKED and that any new Police Commissioner be removed from Ministerial control and placed under the management of an all party and citizens committee. We also need new laws with strong penalties for any government official or police officer found guilty of violating human and civil rights.
'I'm sorry, but ... ': Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart's qualified apology to law-abiding motorcyclists caught up in the state's bikie crackdown.
ANOTHER HOLLOW APOLOGY Police Commissioner Ian Stewart has apologised to law-abiding motorcyclists after one rider said he's been pulled over 21 times during the bikie crackdown. STORY:
Don't know if any of you read this awhile ago, but this was an article from an ex-cop on serious organized crime at a conference. Now what I want to know is who has a better idea on bikies and what they get up too??? A cop, or a politician that in general, are shielded from being in the public, as most people would duly abuse them, so they tend to have private functions and gathering in exclusive restaurants etc, away from the heart of crime in the city. "ANTI-association laws are a "kneejerk response to moral panic" about bikies who commit as little as 0.1 per cent of serious crime on the Gold Coast, according to an ex-senior local cop turned criminologist. Bond University's Terry Goldsworthy, who investigated the Finks motorcycle gang as a detective, said the first target of Queensland's Criminal Organisation Laws was "nowhere near the heart" of organised crime. "They are simply not organised crime czars," he told the International Serious and Organised Crime conference in Brisbane. Mr Goldsworthy quest ...
I think it quiet interesting that with current trends of re shaping the Qld Police Service with the Newman Government and Police Commissioner Ian Stewart, when Stewart sought to thin/ trim his middle and senior management, he requested applications for 'Voluntary Redundancies (VR)'. Some 400 members of the Qld Police Service from Inspector up applied to be made redundant, 74 were granted. 400 experienced officers are big numbers looking for an out.

Nine Below Zero 35th Anniversary year 2014 Around October/ November 1979 Stan's Blues Band changed their name and did their first gig at the Thomas a Becket as Nine Below Zero. About the same time they went into Vineyard Studios, behind the Borough Tube, to record an EP. A&M picked up on this and offered the band a contract,Rondor Music also offered them a publishing deal, without the band having written a single original song. Would this happen today ? To help celebrate our 35th Anniversary we are putting together some exciting events. Before we go out in February with the great Ben Waters we do a few warm up gigs around London, pop over to France and then back for Skeggy on the Sunday with Wilko Johnson. 23rd of Feb we play the Beaverwood club for our old friend Pete Feenstra supporting are local band the Deets. 24th of Feb we are putting on a special event at The Iconic London gig the Half Moon Putney. 51 Years Ago: Charlie Watts Joins the Rolling Stones The Rolling Stones may have publicly celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2012, but according to guitarist Keith Richards, the band members themselves count January 2013 as their real anniversary. That’s because that month, Charlie Watts officially joined the Stones, and he has been a mainstay of the group ever since. Watts has become one of the most legendary drummers in rock music history, but ironically, his background was primarily in jazz before a chance meeting with British blues pioneer Alexis Korner. Watts was working as a graphic designer for an ad company when he accepted Korner’s offer to play with Blues Incorporated, a London-based group that had also featured occasional appearances from an aspiring young singer named *** Jagger. Watts met Jagger and the other members of the fledgeling Rolling Stones in mid-1962, completing their lineup by joining the following January. Watts played his first gig with the Stones on Jan. 12, 1963, at the ...

A friend of the Shame Files shared this. "On another page that I view, the position of the Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart has been questioned in relation to the VLAD legislation and the conduct of police in enforcing said legislation The way the laws are written is draconian and target any person who wears motorcycle leathers and associates with others who are like minded. The public utterances of politicians and the Police Commissioner say this is not so. The moral dilemma the Police Commissioner faces, as well as many operational officers, is do they adhere to the bad law as it is written and lose face with the public, as is the government intention, or do they police the law as per the public utterances? To follow the written legislation means continued employment and loss of public support. To follow the public utterances means an unsure future from a vindictive power crazed government but public support improves. What do they do? No wonder there are a lot of police officers feeling unlove ...
