If your in New York City, you must try Miss Lily's Restaurant (132 W Houston St, New York, NY 10012) a West Indian styled eatery that also has a lounge, variety store and organic juice bar. From the Miss Lily's website: "...the team has created a casual Caribbean outpost specializing in a modern approach to classic island cooking. Drawing from the diverse roots of Jamaican cuisine the kitchen offers delicacies like jerk chicken, escovitch fish, oxtail and curried goat seasoned with scotch bonnet peppers and fiery jerk spices... Miss Lily's Variety is an expertly-curated, West Indian record store-themed gallery and boutique. Inspired by their memories of spending hours upon hours “nerding out” about music at record stores in their youth, two of the partners, Serge Becker and Matt Goias pay respectful tribute to the booming musical tradition of the Caribbean with a collector's paradise of rare and essential Jamaican vinyl." This may have already been posted. It's takes so long to look through all the posts. I don't have time for that. Anyway, 540 John Wesley Dobbs Avenue Formerly Houston Street, The Family Home Of John Wesley Dobbs (Photo By R. Keen 2013) What is not well known is that Dobbs’ house still stands in the Old Fourth Ward and that a poignant relic from Dobbs is visible to any car driving by: a marble stepping stone with his name engraved into it. To see this stone and the home, drive east on John Wesley Dobbs Avenue, past Boulevard, and stop in front of the first residential building on the left. Four steps rise from the sidewalk to a walkway. On the front of the top step is carved “540 Houston St. N. E.” Houston Street was the old name for John Wesley Dobbs Avenue, which was renamed for him in 1994, 33 years after his death. On the top of this marble step is carved “J. W. Dobbs,” marking the approach to his solid, upper middle-class home which has recently been renovated. An African American, Do ...

Supporters More Reasons for signing Change.org petition to save the Century old Community Garden at Lafayette and Genesee . Beverly English FAIR HAVEN, NJ 4 minutes ago Liked 1 I was part of a group of founding members for the Liz Christy garden on Houston St. in Manhattan from 1973 on. I still support the Green Guerillas and all the work they do for community gardens. Liz Christy garden is highly respected by all who see it and has been written up in many publications here, and abroad. Community gardens like the Englewood one which predates Liz Christy garden deserve preservation and honor for all those that have tended them through the years. Matthew Randazzo MAYWOOD, NJ 34 minutes ago Liked 1 NJ is called the "Garden State" although, I'm not sure why. Everywhere I go I see pollution, buildings, factories, most of which are abandoned now, and very little nature. Englewood is surrounded by cement. A little garden would be a nice change from all of the ugliness that's in this state. Leave the garden alone ...

Those on FB that know me, follow me, pay attention etc., know that, weather permitting, on the weekends I take my walk from 135th St in Harlem, down to Houston St in Greenwich Village and back...20 miles! Anyway, during my walks I'm liable to see anybody and anything, which usually makes for an interesting walk. One day I ran into Charlie Wilson, another day Tom Brady and his wife, then it was Bernard King in front of the Garden. Honestly, living in NYC, none of this is a big thing or surprising in the lease. If I run into Denzel coming out of my favorite deli, that's some Big ish! Lol! Anyway, as I was coming back Uptown today, walking east on 2 fifth..."125th for out of towners", as I was passing the World Famous Apollo Theater, I couldn't help but to notice what had to be at least 3k parents with their children, standing in lines that stretched far around the corner, waiting for the opportunity to audition for a chance to be a Star! An Indian Abroad: Here's iris New York, my new home away from home. Same, same but different. The office is in an amazing space on Broadway, not far from Houston St, which is handy because I go for the Rockets. Also right next to the giant adidas store, also handy. It's very quiet at 8am, no Khairul Azhar Mondzi, or Regina Chan time here. I love how every iris office I've been too has a library that is filled with books that people don't use and is stacked with old Sony Ericsson mailers or product glorifiers. Makes me feel at home. Sitting to my right is Mark Walter, normally I'd say never trust a man with two first names but this guy could be the nicest person in the world, and he's from Houston so we talk about Vernon Maxwell pretty much every day. You may recognize Tino who was CD at iris China back in the day. To my left, the lady in the hat is Lisa, who is also very nice and even though it's only been a week she's already sung most of 'Baby come back'. Tim Clarke is the CD, pictured here with the wor ...

Allow me a few minutes here. I first met David S. Ware at the old Knitting Factory on Houston St. in the late-'80s. He was playing with Ahmet Abdullah's Solomonic Quintet. Having worn out my copy of "Dark To Themselves" from incessant listening, hearing David in person was a thrill. He had a tone that shook the earth. If there'd been any paint on the walls it would all have peeled away. David had a dignified air. You could just stand next to him and feel a vibe. I championed his quartet albums in Japan and tried to time my visits to New York so I could see them live. David could make "Autumn Leaves" sound like interstellar travel. David, Matthew and William (plus, as far as I know, five drummers) worked together for the better part of two decades, and I'm willing to bet that not more than a few minutes of all that time was boring in any way. The average age of his last band Planetary Unknown may have been somewhat higher, but they weren't any kind of lounge act. Their live album, recorded in 2011 at Saalf ...
Dang i wish a ice cream truck would roll threw Houston St. sellin Banana Split so i want have to roll out and go buy one!
Well. I found it. The backpack that I have been hoping to find for years. I saw it in the sidewalk display of an army surplus store on Houston St. that actually sells army surplus items from European countries. It is made of heavenly rubberized canvas--one of my favorite substances, with leather straps, aluminum hardware, etc. From the Swedish army, circa 1970. Somewhat large and solid without being agressive or ostentatious. Rather like a Volvo, I suppose. I love it so much that I almost lament having a separate existence from it, as my friend Michael Lee is fond of saying.
Things I saw last night: 1. Kathy Griffin 2. A BIG *** cockroach in the Whole Foods on Houston St. 3. A colony of homeless people 4. The inside of at least 5 different establishments while on the hunt for a bathroom that didn't look like it would give me the Bubonic Plague.

Had an awesome time last night on the lower east side of NYC. Went to a bar on E. Houston St. To hear my son Ryan's new band, The Stank Band. Of course I'm prejudiced, but they were awesome! They truly ROCKED THE HOUSE! 7 members; trumpet, bone, sax. JP Crowley on trombone; Dan Braff gave superior vocals. They did excellent covers of familiar tunes; Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, etc. saw JPs folks Jim and Tracy, Chris Kubiak (sp?) über-Cadet Mallory Yohannan et al. Life is still Very Good!! :-)

I had to go down to SoHo to make a purchase the other day... a most beautiful day, and decided to walk back home. I crossed Houston St. north into Greenwich Village and through the faculty residence compound for NYU with the only outdoor sculpture by Picasso in NYC. The painted concrete slabs stand 36’ high by 20’ wide surrounded by buildings by I.M. Pei, who created the famous pyramid in front of the Louvre in Paris. I walked farther on through the colorful Village to Washington Sq. Park which was buzzing with activity. A good place for me to seek out a bench to rest, and watch the happenings. Refreshed, I continued west through the quieter residential streets and marveled, as I always do. at the historical buildings with welcoming front doors to their homes and appealing corner cafe’s. Some of the street scenes remind me of the city works of painter Edward Hopper. I turned north again as I reached 8th Ave. and through Abingdon Sq. on to a most charming little spot of green, Jackson Sq. where I too ...
