At the end of her last summertime stint at the Houston Chronicle, she worked on various drafts of a funny goodbye speech for the “graduation ceremonies” for the members of the intern “Kiddie School,” as she called it: Now we all realize that, contrary to reports in some national magazines, the Houston Chronicle is NOT a reactionary newspaper. Nevertheless, we are haunted by doubt: where WAS [reporter] Elmer Bertelsen when [civil rights leader James] Meredith was shot? Another aspect of life on Houston’s Family Newspaper that puzzled us this summer was the copy boys. But someone finally explained to us that the Chronicle has a policy of hiring the handicapped, which accounts for a great deal. On August 1, the Big Story of the summer broke when Charles Whitman set a new world’s record for shooting people from the University of Texas tower. . . . On August 15th, the quote of the year came in from Ku Klux Klanners who said, “We don’t believe in violence, and we don’t intend to have any viole ...

George W Bush, 20/20 ABC, 15th September 2000 "The important question is, How many hands have I shaked?" George W Bush, New York Times, 23rd October, 1999 "The fact that (Gore) relies on facts - says things that are not factual - are going to undermine his campaign." George W Bush, New York Times 4th March 2000 "If you're sick and tired of the politics of cynicism and polls and principles, come and join this campaign." George W Bush, Hilton Head, South Carolina, 16th February 2000 "I didn't -- I swear I didn't -- get into politics to feather my nest or feather my friends' nests." Just last weekend, I read a lengthy arcticle in the Houston Chronicle about a huge discovery of oil in west TX. The story said that this find is larger than the Bakken in ND and MT combined with the Eagle Ford field in south TX. This just confirms the fact that we do not have an oil and gas shortage. However, we have difficulty developing these things because all the "dipsticks" are in the halls of congress and the White House. I feel so much better now that my spleen is vented.
Packing up to head to Austin to kick off a new SFC market, baby goats in tow! This will be the first time we have brought babies to a market this year. Hoping all goes well! Meanwhile, Tim (Swede Farm) is driving daughters Sara and Linnea to the Houston Chronicle with bunnies and baby chicks for a photo shoot, Katarina is giving tours at the Houston Livestock Show and Christin is doing yeoman's duty at home, keeping the herd of 2 and 4 legged kids in line and getting the boys ready for baseball practice tonight.   Campbell, a graduate of Alcorn State University, thanks God for allowing her to take a quantum leap from rural Mississippi to a nationally recognized civil rights leader.  Known by many as a: champion of education, civil rights, environmental steward and as an author, Tammie founded the Honey Brown Hope Foundation in 1991 to provide youth with character building programs.   Believing that liberty is God’s gift to humanity and that everyone should be equally valued, Campbell petitioned Merriam Webster and Random House dictionaries to remove or redefine the n-word in 1991 and got the NAACP involved.  In 2007, she held a symbolic n-word burial that was featured nationally on CNN, in Manhattan City Council News, in state and all local media outlets including on the Houston Chronicle’s front page.  To advance this anti-n-word campaign, Campbell wrote an op. ed. in the Houston Chronicle called, "N-word Remains far too Pervasive.”    Tammie received national recognition in the 2005 and 2006 issues ...

Houston Chronicle: Fighting Health Care Fraud Pays Dividends Today, our departments released a report showing that the Obama Administration's historic efforts to go after criminals who steal from Medicare and Medicaid are paying off, especially in hotspots like Houston. The report shows that last year, we recovered a record $4.2 billion from those who prey on our health care system. In total, our efforts returned $14.9 billion over the last four years, more than double what was returned in the previous four years (U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. and HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, 2/11).

Bush’s recent hospitalization . . . A spokesman for the former president told the Houston Chronicle authorities have begun a criminal investigation into the hacking. According to the report, the hacker, who identifies himself as Guccifer, obtained emails sent between 2009 and 2012 belonging to Dorothy Bush Koch, daughter of the elder Bush, family friend Willard Hemingway and CBS sportscaster Jim Nantz — another Bush family friend — among others. The emails included a street address and gate code for the younger President Bush, and updates on Bush senior’s apparently grim condition during his hospitalization for bronchitis late last year. . . . Guns--Facts vs. Emotions? The Sun News, Myrtle Beach, S.C. recently published an article about Fact vs. Emotions. FBI statistics show relatively few people will fall victim to violent, firearm-related crime committed by strangers. Strangers committed 38% of non-fatal violent crimes including rape, robbery, and assault in 2010 (latest data available from FBI). Only 10% used a firearm while committing the crime. Four out of 100 non-fatal, violent crimes are committed by strangers. 1/4 of homicides are committed by strangers. 3/4 are committed by friends, relatives, or other acquaintance. THE DEBATE ON GUNS HAS FOCUSED ON ASSAULT WEAPONS--RARELY USED IN VIOLENT CRIMES ACCORDING TO FBI. THE GOVERNMENT HAS IGNORED FBI STATISTICS AND FOCUSED ON THE EMOTIONS OF THE PEOPLE TO IMPLEMENT GUN CONTROL. In an unrelated article in the Houston Chronicle is a story about a man who calls himself a liberal democrat who is originally from the northeast but now lives in Houston. He is a gun owner and proud of it. One could s ...

On Wednesday the residents of Galveston, Texas, endured what folks in Houston and Miami did earlier this week – an “urban warfare” exercise conducted by the U.S. military. “If you hear a lot of loud noises in Galveston tonight, it’s probably part of a military training exercise,” KTRK-TV in Houston reported. “According to the Galveston County Daily News, the Army is using the old jail on 17th Street for a night drill in urban warfare.” Around 80 soldiers from the U.S. Army Special Operations Command in coordination with local law enforcement violated Posse Comitatus on Wednesday night, the Houston Chronicle reported. “We were invited by the city of Galveston to conduct joint training exercises to enhance the effectiveness of both services in order to better protect the residents of Galveston,” Sgt. 1st Class Michael Noggle, an Army spokesman based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, told the newspaper. How Galveston residents alarmed by noisy military maneuvers are “better protected” by ...

CHURCH GROWTH GOD'S WAY A Pastor called recently, and invited me to minister in his pulpit. I was honored to receive the call, and asked if there was any special need of his church that I could pray about. He said, "Yes, pray that people will start coming back to church!" He was having a hard time getting people to be faithful in attendance. May 18, 2001, the Houston Chronicle newspaper had several articles regarding the terrible spiritual condition of Europe, and the lack of church attendance there. It was titled "Why are Europe's Churches Empty?" The dateline was Canterbury, England. The great cathedral was made famous by Geoffrey Chaucer and is the home of the Anglican Church. A building that seats several thousand, usually has about 13 people attend. On major days 300 may attend. Throughout Europe, the great cathedrals are virtually empty. Western Europe where Protestantism was born, has become one of the least religious populations. Pollsters report that in Britain and France, less than 10% of the pe ...

Friends, Every year before the Martin Luther King's Day is celebrated in the United States I send the following letter to the local newspaper, the Houston Chronicle. So far, this letter has never been published, probably out of so-called 'political correctness.' I would like to offer you the text of this letter. A.S. Dear Editor, The Martin Luther King's Day, when the legacy of Dr. King is remembered and celebrated, is traditionally considered to be a day mostly celebrated by African-Americans, due to his immense contribution to end racial discrimination and oppression of the people of African heritage in this country. It is very rarely mentioned his contribution and support of another group - the Soviet Jews. Long before the plight of the Soviet Jews hit the front pages of Western newspapers, Dr. King declared, "I can not stand idly by, even though I live in the United States and even though I happen to be an American *** and not be concerned about what happens to my brothers and sisters who happen ...
JOHN HAGEE A HERETIC? Dr. Jerry Falwell's 5/6 Liberty Flame quoted Southeastern Baptist Seminary Pres. Dr. Paige Patterson (from 4/30/88 Houston Chronicle) as saying John Hagee's "Two Covenant teaching is "heretical." The article said Hagee believes that Jews are saved by keeping the Mosaic law, while everyone else (Gentiles)--whether Buddhist or Baha'i--needs to believe in Jesus. Former SBC pres. Dr. Jerry Vines said: "Most [evangelicals] do not know John Hagee very well...not aware of his 'Two Covenant' theological position nor his marital difficulties." In 1975 Hagee resigned as pastor of a charismatic church saying his marriage had collapsed and he had become "immoral" in his personal conduct. After leaving that church, he immediately became pastor of Cornerstone Church (San Antonio) where he is now. After a 1975 divorce, he married a young woman from the former church. Hagee is popular on Paul Crouch's TBN, and, in the past year he has spoken at National Religious Broadcasters, Full Gospel Business M ...
GOOD MORNING SOUTHEAST TEXAS! Here's the thought of the day from Max Martin: I stumbled on to a little information this morning in an article written by Emily Pickrell, an energy reporter for the Houston Chronicle. It states that, "Exxon Mobil has an additional obstacle to increasing production (of crude oil) because of its acquisition of XTO Energy in 2010 - a gamble that made Exxon Mobil the nations largest Natural gas producer. They have held back some of their (natural) gas volumes, given where pricing is (down)" When I read this kind of stuff, I just can't believe we as a country allow it to continue. What they're saying here is that the largest of the monopolized crude oil companies, bought out their biggest competition as an industry, nature gas production, and then cut back on its production to raise the price so it won't be as much competition. So, who wins and who looses? I'll make it easy for you. They win, we loose!
Partial Government Shutdown May Be Needed To Restore Fiscal Sanity 'It May be Necessary to Partially Shut Down the Government in Order to Secure the Long-Term Fiscal Well Being of Our Country' The following op-ed first appeared in the Houston Chronicle: Texans would have been hit with the biggest tax increase in the history of our country if Congress failed to act on the American Taxpayer Relief Act in the early hours of 2013. The question I faced was, "Would Texans be better off with a massive tax increase?" In good conscience, I could not allow this to take place. I don't believe Washington needs more money; I believe Texans should keep more of their hard-earned dollars, which is why I voted for the act. This bill, while admittedly not perfect, makes tax cuts permanent for nearly all Texans. Perhaps the most troubling aspect of the fiscal cliff ordeal was that President Obama engaged in the same type of brinksmanship that has become his hallmark. For the fourth time in two years, he stalled and delayed ...

We've lost a dear friend with the passing of Lee Cearnal, who was found in his Houston home today. Lee was a highly respected City Desk editor at the Houston Chronicle and was part of a team that won a Pulitzer Prize for the Jackson Clarion-Ledger in Mississippi. He served his country as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and enjoyed spirited discussions about politics and major issues. After one mission, his ground crew found a .50-caliber slug in his rotor shaft. Moer than anything else in life, Lee loved his daughter, Gretchen Cearnal Botha, her husband, Mario, and his two beloved granddaughters. Lee also was a lot of fun on the golf course, and George Flynn and I are sad to know that we'll have to hack our way out of the trees and the rough without hearing him stifle a laugh. It'll be easy enough to picture him out there, though. For me, the ninth hole at Brock Park will always be Lee's Green, where he tried to hit an easy 7-iron across the bayou once and the ball rocketed over the green and banged around ...

The following Monday morning, the woman was called in front of the Arraignment Judge, sworn-in, and asked to explain her actions. The woman replied, "I was standing at the corner bus stop for about 15 minutes, waiting for the bus to take me home after work. I am a waitress at a local cafe. I was there alone, so I had my right hand on my pistol in my purse hanging on my left shoulder. All of a sudden I was spun around hard to my left. As I caught my balance, I saw a man running away with my purse. I looked down at my right hand and saw that my fingers were wrapped tightly around my pistol. The next thing I remember is saying out loud, "No Way Punk! You're not stealing my pay check and tips." I raised my right hand, pointed my pistol at the ...

OKAY, every one keeps asking so a brief summary...I started working in 1968. In 1985 I bought a house back home. That year, I got a letter form SS that I and another girl had the same SS In 1986 they found they (SS Administration) had given me her number when I sent for mine...we had the same name and in the same town and she being older, had it first *** didn't see that we have completely different birthdays. When I sent for mine, they thought she lost hers so they sent me hers. In 1986 they changed mine and they gave me an official letter stating that due to no fault of my own they had to change mine and although it would take time, all would be straightened out. I carry that letter.I am now 60 and have been getting my SS retirement benefits...they show I started working in 1985. Nothing before that shows so I am missing 17 years of employment and 11 of those years are with IBM. IRS sent me to SS, SS sent me to IRS. I am now wanting to buy another house but hers and my debts are all showing on my cr ...

Well, I see the Texans lost, and not by a little. I didn't watch it, but I checked the Houston Chronicle online a few times to see how it was going. I was hoping they would win, but this was what I expected. The Texans are a lot better than they ever have been but still not quite good enough. I don't normally watch sports of any kind, but I saw the Patriots play somebody on a bar TV a while back, and the Patriots took no prisoners, and I expected them to do similarly with the Texans, which they obviously did.

Dear Barbara, I am a loyal reader of your column in the Houston Chronicle. If I may, I would like to ask your advice regarding my mothers 91' Cadillac Brougham. Short story: Dad retired in 91', and used his savings to buy mom her dream car. Kept it garaged and covered. Literally used about once every two weeks. Used only Mobil 1 oil. Dad passed away in 99', and mom became quite ill in 2001. She stopped driving, but could not bring herself to part with the car. I became mom’s caretaker, and I also maintained the car for her, driving a 60 mile round trip once a month to keep things moving, charged and lubricated. This went on until two months ago, when mom passed away, too. The Caddy has only ~17 K miles, and the vast majority are highway miles. As far as I can tell, it hasn't a dent on it at all. This model is jet black, with a leather top. Power everything. This model is also big and "square", and looks like a presidential limo; I am not kidding. I know they really "don't make them like this anymore. So ...

'SMART' METER OPT OUT FOR TEXAS: UNACCEPTABLE By: Devvy December 25, 2012 NewsWithViews.com Regular readers of my column know my husband and I and a large group of Texans have been fighting installation of 'smart' meters for more than a year. If you haven't read my columns on this fight, they are at this link along with other important information. In the column below it's to build a consensus that those who want to keep their analog meter aren't very smart: Houston Chronicle: State may let some folks keep their dumb old meters. HOUSTON CHRONICLE: Some gun shows canceling after Conn. mass shooting CHRIS CAROLA, Associated Press, By CHRIS CAROLA and MICHAEL HILL, Associated Press | January 4, 2013 | Updated: January 5, 2013 11:20am Read the article. Cancelled because some people were offended. Another article a few days ago talked about TxDot removing gun show directions from the digital signs because people got offended. That has since been reversed and they're back on, BUT. So that's the new norm? Someone gets offended and you have to pander and change everything just to suit them ? I'm offended daily by things, as are many others. No one is reversing everything around town for me or them. Everything inside the D.C. business area offends me, so how about we reverse all of that ! Guess what losers, you're going to get offended in life! No one has any obligation to make you feel better! And you wonder why things are going the way they are.

MAKING MUSIC WITH WHAT YOU HAVE LEFT On Nov. 18, 1995, Itzhak Perlman, the violinist, came on stage to give a concert at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. If you have ever been to a Perlman concert, you know that getting on stage is no small achievement for him. He was stricken with polio as a child, and so he has braces on both legs and walks with the aid of two crutches. To see him walk across the stage one step at a time, painfully and slowly, is an unforgettable sight. He walks painfully, yet majestically, until he reaches his chair. Then he sits down, slowly, puts his crutches on the floor, undoes the clasps on his legs, tucks one foot back and extends the other foot forward. Then he bends down and picks up the violin, puts it under his chin, nods to the conductor and proceeds to play. By now, the audience is used to this ritual. They sit quietly while he makes his way across the stage to his chair. They remain reverently silent while he undoes the clasps on his legs. They wait un ...

Ok, Texans fans. It's Playoff Time again. This isn't our first time around. We showed Cincinnati and the entire NFL nation last year that we were not afraid. And, we are not afraid this year either. Most of the media has said the Bengals will win because they are more of an improved team than they were before. They are 7-1 in their last 8 games. They say the Bengals have the Texans' number this year. I say NO! Two members of the Houston Chronicle picked the Bengals to win tomorrow. John McClain, the Chronicle Sports Reporter and Stacie Young, one of the Chronicle's General Managers. This is an insult! You work for a Houston paper, you root for the Houston team. We don't need them. We don't need "band wagon" fans. We don't need "fair weather" friends. We are true Texans fans. We scream and yell for them from the opening kickoff until the last second tics off the clock and Coach Kubiac is being doused with Gatorade! We want a re-match with the Patriots! If we win...scratch that...WHEN we wi ...
Harris probation director resigns in wake of urinalysis errors that put innocents in jail An outrageous scandal has engulfed the Harris County probation department and forced the ouster of its director. Harris County probation director Paul Becker tendered his resignation, reported the Houston Chronicle ("Harris County's probation director resigns," August 29) in the wake of a hearing which concluded with State District Judge Denise Collins issuing a moratorium on using urinalysis results from the probation department in her court and calling for Becker and his three deputies to resign. Moreover, "On Tuesday, the Harris County District Attorney's Office joined the judge in refusing to use any of the division's drug test results in the 36 other criminal courts until further notice because they have questions about the reliability." (Regular readers may recall that the Bexar County DA had to do the same thing back in 2009 when similar allegations arose there.) KPRC-TV (Aug. 28) summed up the core allegation ...

Arian Foster rewarded each of the Houston Texans' offensive linemen with a unique gift for paving the way to his third consecutive 1,000-yard season. The star running back presented each with a Segway personal transporter on Wednesday. The linemen screamed with delight when they discovered their new toys, and learned how to ride them with help from Foster, who has had one for a while. TEXANS GO OLD SCHOOL WITH LETTERMAN JACKETS, In Texas, high school football is a way of life. The letterman jacket issued to each varsity player is proof via outerwear that you're somebody. And in that spirit of "Texas Forever," members of the Houston Texans were seen in the locker room Friday wearing brand new letterman jackets. Power Poll: Still No. 1 The Houston Texans got the nod over the Atlanta Falcons this week, but who's No. 3 -- and where did our experts rank your team? More... The idea was the brainchild of nose tackle Shaun Cody. Teammate Connor Barwin worked with the team's equipment director to make the initial order. The jackets arrived Friday. "I used to say before the season it feels like we're on a college team," Barwin said Friday, via the Houston Chronicle. "Everybody gets along, we have so much fun. And this jacket, you feel like you're on a high school team where it's all about winning, it's all about being around a group of guys. "This jacket is just another symbol of that. There's n ...

By Chad Love Hunter participation in Texas' post-season conservation order snow goose hunts has plummeted, as the number of birds wintering in Texas has declined dramatically. From this story in the Houston Chronicle: During the 2000 snow goose conservation season, almost 28,000 waterfowlers went afield in Texas. They took, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department surveys, a little more than 102,000 geese. The next two years, participation fell a bit, to about 18,400 in 2001 and 21,700. Then things changed, drastically. In the early 2000s, the number of snow geese coming to the Texas coast nose-dived as the birds began a major shift in wintering grounds. Mid-winter counts from the mid-1970s to late 1990s had tallied 800,000 to as many as 1.2 million snow geese on the Texas coast. By 2002, that number had dropped to barely a half-million.
