THIS DAY THAT YEAR ( 20 / 9 / 14 ) : Sep 20, 1973: King triumphs in Battle of Sexes : On this day in 1973, in a highly publicized "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match, top women's player Billie Jean King, 29, beats Bobby Riggs, 55, a former No. 1 ranked men's player. Riggs (1918-1995), a self-proclaimed male chauvinist, had boasted that women were inferior, that they couldn't handle the pressure of the game and that even at his age he could beat any female player. The match was a huge media event, witnessed in person by over 30,000 spectators at the Houston Astrodome and by another 50 million TV viewers worldwide. King made a Cleopatra-style entrance on a gold litter carried by men dressed as ancient slaves, while Riggs arrived in a rickshaw pulled by female models. Legendary sportscaster Howard Cosell called the match, in which King beat Riggs 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. King's achievement not only helped legitimize women's professional tennis and female athletes, but it was seen as a victory for women's rights in gene ...

After the original West Baden Hotel burned to the ground in 1901, owner, Colonel Lee Sinclair, hired a young architect, Harrison Albright, to build him a new hotel which would later be labeled "The Eighth Wonder of the World". The new dome erected in 1902 still stands today, and is 100' high, 200' in diameter and was the world's largest free-spanning dome until the Houston Astrodome. The West Baden Hotel went through major renovation in 2007 thanks to Bill and Gayle Cook of Bloomington, IN. An incredible place to visit!

This date in Pasadena, Texas history – or nearby: On Sunday, December 8, 2013 they started demolishing the Houston Astrodome. Built in 1965 many of us had personal connections. My father drilled the water wells for the sand & gravel contractors on site to make the concrete. My wife’s grandfather was an electrician who helped wire the place. What is your connection to the “Eighth Wonder of the World?” We experienced baseball games, football games, rodeos and conventions in the first doomed stadium in the world. Texas can-do! We were there in 1992 when George H. W. Bush was selected at the Republican National Convention. Didn’t Elvis perform there? Selena? What about monster trucks? Or the AMA Grand National Championship? A movie set? Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs tennis match. The events were endless. An incredible place that will never be forgotten.

This is not yet an endorsement of one plan over another except that we want it preserved. Also, please note that this is a site for those in favor of keeping it. We're here for positive action, not for debate. Thanks.

The Houston Football Tournament Continues: In another upset the 1995 Houston Oilers with a 7-9 record defeat the 1990 Oilers. Chris Chandler tosses three TD passes without an interception. Warren Moon tosses for 100 yards more then Chandler but does not find the end zone once. The 95 Oilers 26-20 win advances them to the next round. Next up the 1978 Oilers and rookie running back Earl Campbell vs the 2008 Houston Texans from the Astrodome which I am sure is sold out chanting the Oilers Fight Song.

Discovery Green should have been where Astroworld was. . The current location is waay too small for the type of functions it holds. There should be more room to fly kites, ice skate, parking, doggy days and numerous concerts but that would be too much like right huh. I love going there but cant help but look up at the office building penthouse windows and wonder which rich self centered republican c.e.o decided to build a pretty view while he comes up with the next ponzi scheme. . . The Astrodome has the perfect amount of room to hold epic events at a larger scale generating millions for H-Town rather than some rich group whos sick of seeing the crackheads and fresh out the county jail inmates from his office. Yeaa Houston niggaz, its a reason we dont get out of jail until 3 or 4am. ..they dont want you walking thru their PARK at certain hours homeboy. One hour wait just to *** at something called a park? I will not sink to the level of the media and call the NSA and IRS incidents "scandals." I will however reiterate my campaign to end all media references to such incidents with the suffix "-gate." The effort is to end the use of suffixes altogether when referencing government misconduct, but barring that, I would like to see "-gate" replaced with "-dome," as anyone with a high school education should know that Teapot Dome was a far more heinous abuse of power than Watergate.

Turn the Page Posted by Joel Osteen on 7/13/2012 A while back, I met a sharp young couple with three small children from New Orleans. They had lost everything during Hurricane Katrina. The house that they had worked so hard for was swept away along with their furniture, possessions and car. They made it out of the city with just the clothes on their backs. A rescue bus had dropped them off at the Houston Astrodome. One of the couples from Lakewood Church, who was volunteering, reached out to them and helped them find an apartment and get back on their feet. The man told how he was the first one in his family to ever own a home, and the first one to ever graduate from college. Their future was bright. Everything was going well. But when Hurricane Katrina hit, it just took the wind out of their sails. Since they didn't have a car at the time, another couple from Lakewood would pick them up every Sunday and bring them to church. They would hear about how God created us to be victors and not victims, and how ...

This Ali story has a message to us all about getting & recieving RESPECT ! this Ernie Terrell the brother of the late Motown Records singer Tammii Terrell, he was a victim of his own mouth ! That spring, he traveled to Great Britain, where he was a reserve rider on the American Team competing in the Trans-Atlantic Match Races. During the race at Mallory Park, Steve Baker fell. Lantana is a rocking country female group based in Dallas Texas. Their performances all over the U.S. have earned them accolades such as "the Top 10 Concerts of '06" as well as "Top 10 CDs of '06" by the Dallas Morning News. Performing in venues including the Cowboy Stadium, Houston Astrodome, Louisiana Superdome, State Fair of Texas and Nashville's Wildhorse Saloon has led to a dynamic show including the soaring harmonies they are known for. Their first two singles landed them in the top 10 on the Texas Music Chart twice, a feat only superseded by one female trio prior to them: the Dixie Chicks. With an unbridled passion for country music it is their sole purpose to bring to the world stage a quality of music that is both traditional in its roots but progressive in its sound. Shock full of content that is relevant to fans that are well past their teens, the group delivers high energy signed with a sense of humor, of course. Jose Feliciano just sang the national anthem before the first game of the NLDS. I remember him doing what was then the very controversial singing of the anthem before the first major nationally televised college basketball game in 1968, Lew Alcindor's (now Kareem Abdul Jabbar's) UCLA Bruins vs the Houston Cougars of Elvin Hayes. In front a sold out crowd at the old Houston Astrodome, Hayes put on a show and ended the 47 game win streak of UCLA. This marked the rebirth of college basketball.
