Honor Flight & Pearl Harbor

A Honor Flight is conducted by non-profit organizations dedicated to transporting as many United States military veterans as possible to see the memorials of the respective war(s) they fought in in Washington, D.C. Pearl Harbor, known to Hawaiians as Puuloa, is a lagoon harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, west of Honolulu. 4.3/5

I was very fortunate today to work an Honor Flight from Baltimore to Chicago. Here are a few pics with some REAL HEROS. The first pic is David Russell and he was on the USS Oklahoma when it was attacked in Pearl Harbor.
On Veteran’s Day, Pres. Obama honored the nation’s oldest living World War II veteran, 107-year-old Richard Overton. But while Obama spoke of his reverence for the elderly vet, he was oblivious to his own hypocrisy. At Arlington National Cemetery, Obama spoke of Overton’s bravery while being stationed at Pearl Harbor during the infamous attack on Dec. 7, 1041, and mentioned Overton’s valiance while fighting in Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Then, the president commended Honor Flight, the program that flies World War II vets from their hometowns to Washington, D.C. for free, to visit the World War II Memorial. Overton took part in an Honor Flight last May. “For the first time he and his fellow veterans paid their respects at the World War II Memorial,” Obama said. It’s interesting that Obama would praise or even mention the Honor Flight program, considering he closed the open-air memorial last month during the government shutdown.
Last week I posted that my Pearl Harbor-surviving Gpa has the distinct privilege of being flown back to D.C. to visit the WWII Memorial through a program called Honor Flight. I'm only mentioning it again so that if any of you missed that post and you want to write him a quick note for his 'Mail Call' day, we'd love to have you do so!! And, more importantly, he'd love it.

honor flight of WWII vets on were on my plane Friday-got misty thinking about my late grandpa, a Pearl Harbor survivor. Happy Veterans' Day.
This was part of a speech I gave on Veteran's Day last year regarding my personal privilege of participating in the fourth honor flight. I met men who treaded water in Pearl Harbor for 2 hours waiting for a ship to pluck them from the oil coated, burning waters. I met a man who dug 5 fox holes in the frozen timber line at the Battle of the Bulge and then lived in that tiny hole for two weeks while the Germans fired artillery rounds at them night and day. I met a nurse who tore up anything made of cloth she could find, just to stop the bleeding from the wounds of hundreds of injured sailors from Pearl Harbor. She said, “The injured just kept coming through the doors.” Most notably, is a Veteran who showed me black and white photos he took of a concentration camp as they had just liberated the few that were left alive. I ask you, “What have you done to earn your piece of Freedom for this country?”
I had the privilege to sit by an gentleman today on my flight that was an amazing human being. You see, he is one of the few remaining survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack and he was part of an "Honor Flight" that occurred today with several others. He served our great country in the US Navy for almost 24 years and is still proud today to be a USN sailor that spent many of his days on the USS Cummings. He shared some amazing stories and life lessons with me today. I'll forever be grateful for his sacrifice to keep my family safe and free but for also talking with me on such an humble level. He was so easy to talk to and was still sharp as a tack though his actions were slowed by his age. He told me detailed stories of the war and even some interesting stories about General Douglas MacArthur, Harry Truman and others. Interestingly enough, this war hero later became a scientist/engineer and developed the first ever machine to measure hemaglobin levels in blood. How cool is that considering my profess ...
Six of the Fairbanks area’s World War II veterans, now in their 80s and 90s, shared their war memories with Daily News-Miner journalists as the 70th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor approaches. The series began on Veterans Day, continues for four Sundays and concludes on Dec. 7...
Richard Soderlund of Orland Park remembers the horrors of Pearl Harbor as he prepares for on Wed.
Just finished watching "Return to Pearl Harbor" on Channel 27. The story highlighted the Honor Flight which took Wisconsin survivors of the attack on Pearl Harbor back to the site. Haven't had something on TV touch me like this in a long time. Host Amy DuPont is to be commended for her sincere and meaningful report of such an important event. I think the people of America should learn more about the Honor Flights Program and support their mission to give recognition to WWII survivors who still have so much history to share - before it's too late.
A look at the story of one Honor Flight couple, Kenneth and Kathleen Sippy of North Liberty. Kathleen Sippy served as a Pharmacist’s Mate 3rd Class with the Navy WAV’s at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, and Kenneth Sippy was a Technician 4th Grade with the 872nd Engineer Aviation Battalion and served in the...
