Last month I had the opportunity to visit the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. During my visit I was reminded of the countless sacrifices made by so many people so that many years later an African American woman like myself could have civil rights in this great country I live in. So I head to the polls today with a heart of gratitude! Thank you Lord that you gave people the courage to stand up for what was right so I can stand at this poll today.
I highly recommend the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta. Amazing footage of things I wish I didn't know.

My friend Patsy and I attended the annual OctoberTour of Historic Homes in Salisbury yesterday and had an amazing time. The Hambley-Wallace Home (it was called the Wallace Mansion when I was growing up) was open for the first time. We toured all 3 floors. Stood in line for 40 minutes but it was worth it and such a beautiful day, we didn't mind. Also toured 11 more historic homes and all were stunning in their own right. The entire city of Salisbury is a historic site and this was the first year I didn't hear one of the docents remind us that General Sherman missed Salisbury on his way through the south and that's why we still have all the beautiful homes standing. They have all been renovated to their original glory, as nearly as possible. It was a good day!

Well we made it home from our adventures to Myrtle Beach. We stopped and read some work from Carl Sandburg national historic site, visited the battlefields of some great American Patriots at the battle of Cowpens, Kings MTN, Ninety Six, and Moores Creek Bridge, also found the site of the original lost colony at FT Raleigh on Roanoake island, attempted the first flight at the sands of Kitty Hawk Wright brothers national memorial, saw the light beacons that protect ships at Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout National Seashores, and took a tour of the island where the Civil War began on Fort Sumter. Spent a week at surfside beach just south of Myrtle with wife, kids and Dan Ward. All in all an excellent pre-deployment leave.

We would like to invite you to witness a Sacred Ceremonial Horse Ride by representatives from the Mandan, Hidasta, and Arikara Delegation from the Fort Berthold Reservation, North Dakota. On Monday, October 15th, riders will begin at 9 a.m. from South Park in the town of Fort Laramie to Fort Laramie National Historic Site. The purpose of the ride is to revisit the site where the negotiations of the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851 took place. The parade will be followed by a formal program with speakers that will begin around 10 a.m. and will include ceremonial flag songs, victory songs, posting of the colors, and ceremonial dances.

Returning to Idlewild.some random thoughts from the past. SUNDAY, JUNE 29, 2008 Sitting here on Williams Island I sense the spirits in the calm of the wind. Today I decided to continue this effort to log thoughts about the Historic Site, Idlewild. The sounds of birds are loud here by the beach. Somedays you can remain alone for hours here. During the Summer however the Island becomes alive with movements and sounds of water, wind, birds and the humming of motors from cars and boats. But in those moments of still silence, and magical moment occurs when silence is breached by the coo and songs of the birds... I sit here and wonder what will become of this place. I was well into adulthood before I understood that the footsteps before me on these paths and roads, were made by many of significance. Worthy to be remembered and understood. Gotta Go, will start delving deeper soon...

Here’s a lesson for those who need to understand the significance of honouring Dr Nelson Mandela in Howick: On the R103 road - the main road to Johannesburg, significant turn of events unfolded. It is1962 on 5 August in Howick, at around 15h00. The then apartheid security forces captured Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela, after he was on the run for 17 months. Madiba’s arrest begins in 27 years in prison, which is to become a significant part on the long walk to freedom. This dramatic and historic moment follows Mandela’s clandestine visit to the ANC President of the day, Inkosi Albert Luthuli, at his Groutville home to report back to him on his African odyssey and call for support for the armed struggle. This last weekend more than 100 men, women and children from seven different families gathered at Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site to celebrate. The connection? They are all descendants of men and women who once lived or worked at Redcliffe and its sister plantations. Descendants of James Henry Hammond, former SC Governor and slave-owner, greeted and shared stories with descendants of Austin Romeo, Binah Hornsby Larke, Anthony & Lucy Henley and Lena & John Smith – all former slaves or sharecroppers on the Hammond plantations. Genealogy is a big part of the research that staff at historic sites like Redcliffe Plantation conduct to help visitors and descendants alike connect to the history and the people who made South Carolina.

Hi everyone- Due to the severity of the drought conditions affecting southern Wisconsin, Old World Wisconsin and Stonefield historic site will no longer allow the smoking of cigarettes, pipes, or cigars in the historic areas of the museum grounds. Well it's back to work after a great weekend! Karen, Jim & I took a great trip to Asheville on Saturday. We visited the NC Arboretum, Grove Arcade, Woolworth Walk and several other neat places downtown. Sunday afternoon Karen and I drove up to the Poinsett Bridge Historic Site. Kids are headed to Martin's Cove, Wyoming to spend four days "trekking" like the early handcart pioneers through Devil's Gate, and the Sweetwater River. A terrific opportunity for them. But what are mom and dad going to do for four days without kids? Spend some time in St. George to see Aladin at the Tuacahn. Naturally.
I dreamed that I was in a hotel in Jerusalem for some inconsequential seminar. The group was going to leave the next day and I didn't have time for some silly seminar... not when in Jerusalem. So I asked someone how to get to the temple mount and Gethsemane. I tried to get close to the temple mount but there suddenly appeared a run down slum blocking the way and I could only see the historic site between crumbling buildings from a dirty alley. Then I was suddenly standing a few feet away from an ancient olive tree in Gethsemane that Jesus beheld when he walked there. Several feet beyond that tree stood headstones. The garden was no longer a garden but a cemetery. Then I was riding on the roof of a Jerusalem bus headed back to the hotel. I don't know why I was on the roof instead of inside the bus. Somebody else was riding on top too but I didn't know who he was even though it felt like I knew him. I'm not sure what it all means but it must be trying to tell me something.
Walking through N Fargo Trollwood for me is like when you are on vacation and you visit some historic site walking among the ruins and you can almost feel the energy of the past - a mix of amazement and sadness with a touch of creepiness.

We took the older Youth from our mentoring Program: the Young Lions, to Brown VS Brown National Historic Site. We had an excellent tour through history. Our Guide told our Youth at the end of the tour that he takes pride in his job and indicated how important education is to him. He also stated that out of 5 siblings, he was the only that did not go to prison. He broke a cycle through hard work and obtaining an education. Its not where you from my brothers and sisters, it's where you are going. You have heard me say many times, that you can change the course of your life, through working hard and applying yourself in School. Education can break the poverty cycle . This young man parents could not read and he was the only one in his family to graduate from High School and attend college. He did not give up! What an inspirational Story. Now he is a Park Ranger. Thanks be from God ! I pray that his story touched the lives of the Young Lions that were there today !
