The restored Civil War fort opened to the public in 1964 as part of the Civil War Centennial as an example of the type of fort that protected the approaches to Washington DC during the war. Without the reconstruction of Fort Ward this site would have become a housing development. As the best example of a preserved fort defending the capital, Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site serves as an orientation point for scholars, citizens and tourists who wish to learn more about the Defenses of Washington and the Civil War history of Alexandria. With its rolling hills and beautiful parklike setting, the spectacular 478-acre site in Brooklyn became the most desired final resting place for generations of prominent New Yorkers, from mobsters to members of the Roosevelt family. Green-Wood’s 560,000 ghostly residents include actor Frank Morgan (the title character from “The Wizard of Oz”), notorious New York Sen. “Boss” Tweed, stained-glass artist Louis Comfort Tiffany, pioneer journalist Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman, newspaperman Horace Greeley and composer Leonard Bernstein. Green-Wood is also a Revolutionary War historic site. The Battle of Long Island was fought in 1776 on the land that now houses the cemetery.

It is also possible that agriculture of a limited nature, such as the horticulture of native plants, had begun by this time.
![]() My friend Patsy and I attended the annual OctoberTour of Historic Homes in Salisbury yesterday and had an amazing time. The Hambley-Wallace Home (it was called the Wallace Mansion when I was growing up) was open for the first time. We toured all 3 floors. Stood in line for 40 minutes but it was worth it and such a beautiful day, we didn't mind. Also toured 11 more historic homes and all were stunning in their own right. The entire city of Salisbury is a historic site and this was the first year I didn't hear one of the docents remind us that General Sherman missed Salisbury on his way through the south and that's why we still have all the beautiful homes standing. They have all been renovated to their original glory, as nearly as possible. It was a good day!

Today I decided to continue this effort to log thoughts about the Historic Site, Idlewild. The sounds of birds are loud here by the beach. Somedays you can remain alone for hours here. During the Summer however the Island becomes alive with movements and sounds of water, wind, birds and the humming of motors from cars and boats. But in those moments of still silence, and magical moment occurs when silence is breached by the coo and songs of the birds... I sit here and wonder what will become of this place. I was well into adulthood before I understood that the footsteps before me on these paths and roads, were made by many of significance. Worthy to be remembered and understood. Madiba’s arrest begins in 27 years in prison, which is to become a significant part on the long walk to freedom. This dramatic and historic moment follows Mandela’s clandestine visit to the ANC President of the day, Inkosi Albert Luthuli, at his Groutville home to report back to him on his African odyssey and call for support for the armed struggle. Three days later, after his capture at Howick, the charges of leading workers to strike in 1961 and leaving the country illegally are read to him during a court appearance. On October 25, 1962, Nelson Mandela is sentenced to five years in prison for these particular charges. Today on the 4th of August 20 ...

![]() Share with Friends | | July 30, 2012 | Permalink Kane No Crutch for ObamaCare The Supreme Court may have botched its ruling on ObamaCare, but U.S. District Judge John Kane refused to. His Colorado courtroom became an historic site on Friday when the Judge issued the first injunction against the President's anti-conscience mandate. Because of the ruling, at least one family-owned business, Hercules Industries, won't feel the sting of Health and Human Services' (HHS) war on religious liberty when the order takes effect this Wednesday. Thanks to our friends at Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), the Newland family has three months to take its lawsuit to the next level before the administration's mandate, requiring it to offer abortion pills, contraception, and sterilization to the company's 265 employees, takes effect. As devout Catholics, the Newlands argued that they should have the freedom to operate their business according to their beliefs. Even the company's articles of incorporation make it clear that H ...

![]() The story of Fort Scott is the story of America growing up. When the fort was established in 1842, the nation was still young and confined largely to the area east of the Mississippi River. Yet within a few years, Fort Scott's soldiers became involved in events that would lead to tremendous spurts of growth and expansion. As the nation developed, tensions over slavery led to the conflict and turmoil of "Bleeding Kansas" and the Civil War. Fort Scott takes you through these years of crisis and beyond to the time when the United States emerged as a united, transcontinental nation.

![]() I dreamed that I was in a hotel in Jerusalem for some inconsequential seminar. The group was going to leave the next day and I didn't have time for some silly seminar... not when in Jerusalem. So I asked someone how to get to the temple mount and Gethsemane. I tried to get close to the temple mount but there suddenly appeared a run down slum blocking the way and I could only see the historic site between crumbling buildings from a dirty alley. Then I was suddenly standing a few feet away from an ancient olive tree in Gethsemane that Jesus beheld when he walked there. Several feet beyond that tree stood headstones. The garden was no longer a garden but a cemetery. Then I was riding on the roof of a Jerusalem bus headed back to the hotel. I don't know why I was on the roof instead of inside the bus. Somebody else was riding on top too but I didn't know who he was even though it felt like I knew him. I'm not sure what it all means but it must be trying to tell me something.

Our Guide told our Youth at the end of the tour that he takes pride in his job and indicated how important education is to him. He also stated that out of 5 siblings, he was the only that did not go to prison. He broke a cycle through hard work and obtaining an education. Its not where you from my brothers and sisters, it's where you are going. You have heard me say many times, that you can change the course of your life, through working hard and applying yourself in School. Education can break the poverty cycle . This young man parents could not read and he was the only one in his family to graduate from High School and attend college. He did not give up! What an inspirational Story. Now he is a Park Ranger. Thanks be from God ! I pray that his story touched the lives of the Young Lions that were there today !
