Reports Washington Post: A vice chairwoman of Howard University’s board of trustees recently told the board that the historically black school in Northwest Washington “is in genuine trouble” because of fiscal and management problems, according to a report published Friday. “Howard will not be here in three years if we don’t make some crucial decisions now,” Renee Higginbotham-Brooks wrote in a letter dated April 24, which the Chronicle of Higher Education published on its Web site. Among the concerns Higginbotham-Brooks cited were competition for students from less expensive public colleges, the possibility of a reduction in federal appropriations, expenses associated with the university’s hospital, the absence of a robust fundraising system to offset declines in tuition revenue and a university workforce that she said is too large. Rachel Mann, a spokeswoman for Howard, said Friday afternoon that the university would refer questions about the letter to the board chairman, Addison Barry Rand ...

Polytechnic Students Union has written this The Polytechnic Students Union wishes to inform students that the decision by Unima council to reopen the colleges is a welcome idea because the union would like to see the students finishing and continuing their studies without hindrance and political disturbances as has been the case recently. However, if we go by the memo in the Daily Times of Today, the 6th June, 2013, council has indicated that the college will write students individually to express their willingness to resume classes out of their volition. PSU has not been communicated on the same by our local management as was the case with Chancellor College Students Union. PSU believes that council is using Chancellor college as an experiment on the consent forms to test the strength of the Union. You are aware that some PP sponsored students disguised as concerned students and wanted to frustrate the majority of the students who were pursuing the issues under the leadership of SUCC. The Polytechnic com ...

You know, as a father of three children who have yet to get their higher education - more and more I'm narrowing their options down to about 2 or 3 schools. This stuff is so rampant, so ridiculous, and I can't imagine supporting it to the tune of 20,000 of my hard-earned dollars per year (or more).
Recent editorials published in Indiana newspapers Associated Press Waging the 'readiness' campaign Almost every Hoosier who starts college intends to finish. Unfortunately, those who arrive on campus unprepared in key academic areas are far less likely to fulfill that aspiration. The Indiana General Assembly passed one of its more logical, meaningful pieces of education legislation this spring related to college readiness. That bill, signed into law this month by Gov. Mike Pence, calls for high schools to identify and give extra help to 11th-graders at risk of failing senior-year exams or needing remedial classes once they reach college. Unlike numerous experimental school reforms enacted in recent years by the Legislature, this law is quantifiably valid. It makes clear sense. The legislation addresses a problem illuminated in the Indiana College Readiness Reports issued last month by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. The research showed that 32 percent of Indiana's high school graduating class ...

I love her very much and as a result of my strong religious beliefs, I have decided not to have any sexual intimacy with her until I marry her. Some time back, just as I was about to write my final exams, my girlfriend called to inform me that she was pregnant with her ex which got me very devastated. Her pregnancy issue got to me that, I lost concentration during my exams and had to drop out of my tertiary education. Six months after, my girl confessed to me that she wasn’t pregnant and also the guy who called claiming to be his ex was her boss who wanted to know how much I loved my girlfriend. Her confession made me happy even though I couldn’t complete my tertiary education because of that. Now, the prank which was played by my girlfriend and her boss has become a reality because she just told me recently that she is pregnant for her boss. HRD min likely to form coordinating body for education regulators New Delhi : Keeping aside a contentious proposal for an over-arching body subsuming existing regulators in the higher education sector, government has decided to come up with a coordinating body instead through an executive order. The development comes in wake of the Parliamentary standing committee on HRD opposing the viability of a proposed over-arching body which would have subsumed regulators like UGC and AICTE. While examining the Higher Education and Research Bill 2011 for creation of National Commission for Higher Education and Research (NCHER), it feared the over-arching body would give rise to "undesired results". It had instead suggested to form an over-arching commission which would work as a coordinator with the specialised bodies like UGC, AICTE and NCTE, as a workable formula under the overall supervision of the Commission. Taking note of the suggestion, HRD Ministry officials said they have given "in principal" approval to th ...

Endocrine Diseases - Jun 24th, 09 A Bayer HealthCare Animal Health Brochure Introduction Equine Cushing’s disease is one of the most common diseases of horses greater than 15 years of age. The clinical signs are associated with abnormally elevated hormone concentrations in the blood and along with other hormones, cortisol, plays an important role in this disease. This syndrome is better defined as Equine Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID) because it reflects the location within the brain that is abnormal. In humans, Cushing’s disease affects a different location within the pituitary gland, thus the reason why veterinarians prefer to call this disease PPID. The pituitary gland is located at the base of the brain. In horses with PPID, the middle lobe of the pituitary gland (pars intermedia) becomes enlarged over time and results in over production of hormones. The growth of the middle lobe of the pituitary gland can compress the adjacent structures in the pituitary and hypothalamus resulting i ...

Back when RSU 20 was proposed I supported the idea very loosely, not that it was actually my business, but everyone, or enough of everyone, thought it would be a good idea. I hope I don’t have to remind people that it was a rocky start and the road led us to where we are today. After a few short years Frankfort withdrew taking their financial support. Things came to a boil in the general public and many people, parents, educators, school administrators, the public, a lot of public began talking about withdrawal. It wasn’t about cost increases because those had yet to come down in the way they have today. They simply were not happy with the new RSU and they wanted out. The state had set up an incredibly difficult withdrawal process but they wanted to try. First; six towns had to gather signatures sufficient to bring the issue to their town meetings and for Belfast to take it to a city wide election referendum. The signature gathering was done and all six towns passed the withdrawal. The structure was s ...

New agency for national exams: The HRD Ministry has constituted a seven-member task force under former IIT Kanpur director Sanjay Dhande to set up a national testing agency for conducting various kinds of national-level exams. It will prepare a blue print for creating a special purpose vehicle to take the concept of National Testing Agency (NTA) forward. The Central Advisory Board for Education (CABE), the highest decision making body on education, had earlier endorsed the proposal, as the move would relieve different bodies such as UGC and the IIT from the responsibility of holding national-level tests. Higher Education secretary Ashok Thakur had said the proposed agency might be formed through an executive order and not set up as a statutory body through an act of Parliament. The testing agency would be conducting the National Eligibility Test (NET) and Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) to begin with. It would be an "internationally benchmarked testing and assessment organisation" conducting ...

Why does society think more highly of kids who pay enormous amounts of $$ to sit on their butts in a classroom, learning many things having nothing to do w/their targeted field, for years on end, just to gain a piece of paper that says they are 'smart' and 'qualified', than those who get up every morning, go to a job, work their butts off to learn about trades/business operations, & actually earn $$ while doing it?
COLLEGE EDUCATION rises each year. After reading this post ... what are your thoughts on bringing down the costs of college? Should government play a role? Higher Education: The Coming Shakeout Robert Kuttner Just as markets over-built housing, mispriced mortgages and bid up prices beyond the real financial capacity of homebuyers, America's colleges and universities have over-expanded and over-priced their product. We are getting an education bubble with dynamics similar to the late housing bubble. As more and more students find themselves with debts that exceed the salaries offered by the current job market, colleges have expanded beyond the capacity of their markets. Some kind of shakeout is coming. The question is: what kind. Clearly, our society cannot afford the current rate of expansion of higher education costs. We've reached the limits of piling these expenses onto students. But as resources become more scarce, as the consequences of over-expansion hit, the social risk is that the shoe will pinch ...

Has community engagement become a mainstream part of what universities do? If not, how can it get there? These were some of the questions on the agenda at the 6th International Conference on Higher Education organised by the Global University Network for Innovation in Barcelona, Spain, from 13-15 May. “How do we accelerate the process of transforming universities, which so often seem to be organisations brilliantly designed to resist change?” asked Robert Hollister, dean of the Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service at Tufts University in the United States, opening day two of the conference. Community engagement, defined by the Carnegie Foundation as collaboration between higher education institutions and their larger communities for mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources, is a complex area. It can mean different things to different people and institutions may engage in it for different reasons. This can be in the name of social justice or community development, in order to t ...

What do you think of the Board of Higher Education's vote to allow RI colleges to arm their campus police?
Language barring domestic partner benefits, requiring reporting on embryonic stem cell research and allowing social workers not to counsel *** if it violated their religious beliefs were all popped into today's Higher Education conference report. SB 0193 includes $24.9 million in funding increases for the state's 15 public universities, well under the $100 million the Business Leaders for Michigan (BLM) said is necessary for the state's workforce needs (See "Senate Rejects BLM Higher Ed Plan," 4/25/13). And none of the $700 million surplus was used to give a bigger boost to the universities. "As we look around the world at what they're doing about education, we're taking a back seat to us, because they're looking to beat us everyday. We're falling behind the eight ball," Sen. Mo HOOD II (D-Detroit) said. Hood said we need to fund Higher Ed for young people, as they'll be "changing our diapers." He then apologized for the visual. Sen. Roger KAHN (R-Saginaw) noted that when he was in college, the diapers h ...
As Chair of the House of Representatives' Appropriations Subcommittee on Community Colleges I am happy to report that my budget was the first budget reported at Conference Committee this morning. "Community colleges are an important part of our state and I'm proud of what they've done for our students," said Conference Chair Sen. Darwin BOOHER (R-Evart). The report moved out on a 5-1 vote. As in the past two years, the Senate passed a separate budget for Community Colleges, (See "SAF $ Stays In Community Colleges Budget," 4/17/13) while the House combined K-12, Community Colleges and Higher Education into the "School Bus"(See "House Votes For $48.9B Budget Plan," 4/24/13). Analysis of the Higher Education bill by the MN Budget Project:
1. Public University Presidents Earning Big Bucks Many U.S. public university systems may be strapped for cash due to tight state budgets, but four public university presidents received compensation of more than $1 million in fiscal 2011-12 — and two took in more than $2.5 million. According to the annual compensation report by The Chronicle of Higher Education obtained by The New York Times, the highest paid public university president in 2011-12 was Graham Spanier of Pennsylvania State University, who received $2.9 million in total compensation. Spanier was forced out in November 2011 over his handling of a child sex abuse scandal involving a football coach, and his compensation included $1.2 million in severance pay and $1.2 million in deferred compensation. Jay Gogue of Auburn University was second in compensation, at $2.542 million. Next was E. Gordon Gee of Ohio State University, at $1.899 million — including a base salary of $830,439, the highest among the 212 chief executives in the Chronicle ...

Towards Re-Africanizing African Universities: Who Killed Intellectualism in the Post Colonial Era? Ali A. Mazrui* In Memoriam: This lecture is dedicated to Dr. C. Odhiambo-Mbai who had invited Mazrui to give it, and who was later tragically assassinated in Nairobi, Kenya, on Sunday, September 14, 2003. I am delighted to be lecturing in Taifa Hall after many years. Under the previous political order a lecture by Mazrui at the University of Nairobi needed the permission not just of the Vice Chancellor but also of the Office of the Head of State. I hope that under the new dispensation all that was needed to invite me to give this lecture was the decision of the relevant department. The last time I lectured in Taifa Hall was about ten years ago when Kenyan alumni of the U.S. Fulbright-Scheme were celebrating the 50th anniversary of Fulbright and wanted me as their keynote speaker. My topic was relatively innocuous – “African Universities and the American Model of Higher Education.” Even such a lecture n ...

He is the latest victim of Politicization, loss of academic freedom and autonomy. Mr Anuradha Pradeep has been an outspoken critique of current government policy on education. His forthright and often piercing criticism on how universities are managed, how funding for education has been systematically reduced and the loss of academic freedom has irked many, including the Minister of Higher Education. We believe Mr Anuruddha Pradeep was terminated for his outspoken critique of government policy. FUTA unreservedly condemns such acts against members of the academic community. As the President then (in 2011),of the Walter Sisulu University ISRC, myself, the then Secretary-General, Vuyo Mditshwa as mandated by our constituency led by SASCO together with other stakeholders in council i,e. Nehawu & Nteu, met with the Minister of Higher Education & Training, Dr. Blade Ndzimande to ask him to intervene at WSU because of the financial crisis, administrative and academic problems that university had experienced under the management as led then by Professor M Balintulo as we had lost confidence as stakeholders that the management and the council at the time would be able to bring solutions to the different crises that the university faced. Through a consensus by the students and workers we demanded that the intervention by the Minister be to; 1. Disband the Council, 2, Relieve the Vice Chancellor (M Balintulo) from his contract, 3, Take charge of the finance and academic related departments as they had been identified as one of the departments that were not functioning effectively and . ...

The Chronicle of Higher Education tells us the median salary of public university presidents rose 4.7 percent in 2011-12 to more than $440,000 a year. ON July 13th, 2012, The House of Representative of Republic of Indonesia passed The Law No. 12/2012 on Higher Education, which will become a legal basis for higher education governance in Indonesia. This passage ignited protests and demonstrations from several student organizations, because many parts of this Law still attempt to liberalize and commercialize higher education in Indonesia. This law is no more than a ‘changing-cloth’ for Law no. 9/2009 on Legal Entities, which has been revoked by The Constitutional Court in 2010. The Indonesian Constitutional Court revoked The Law no. 9/2009 in 2010, with a main reason: the transformation of public university to ‘legal entity university’ implies an expensive cost of ‘tuition fee’ which has to be paid by students or their parents. But although the Law has been withdrawn, the idea of ‘legal entity university’ is still exist in the Law no. 12/2012, covered in the name of ‘higher education autonomy’. Komite Nasional Pendidikan (National Comm ...

By Nathan Cheatham Live Wire Editor-in-Chief Published April 8th, 2013           Starting next school year Manchester Community College students will have to pay more to enroll for classes.            An increase of approximately $94 per semester will be hitting students in all 17 of the Connecticut community colleges and state universities, and Charter Oak, beginning in Fall 2013 to bring in more revenue and cover the losses experienced by budget cuts affecting higher education made in the past school year.            Despite the efforts of students across the state, including during an organized rally March 21 at Eastern Connecticut State University, the Connecticut Board of Regents for Higher Education approved the increase of 5.25 percent that same day.            “Increasing tuition while cutting services because of budget rescissions is inexcusable,” said MCC SGA president Jonathan Colon. “The state underfunds their 96,000 students whom will be the future of our state an ...

Counterterrorism is the motivating factor for the detention of any person native born or visitors from foreign nations. Montreal, April 30th, 2013 - It is with disappointment and disbelief  that the the MNA for Laurier Dorion and Official Opposition Critic for Higher Education, Mr. Gerry Sklavounos, learned last week of the possibility that the Head Office of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) may be moved to Doha, Qatar in 2016. Mr. Sklavounos argues that the PQ government should set aside its sovereignist agenda and work in collaboration with the federal government to prevent this move and to ensure that Montreal maintains its international leadership role.   “On April 30th, Montreal’s Liberal MNAs reiterated, at the National Assembly, the importance of the ICAO’s headquarters for the city and for all of Canada. Not only is it a symbolic asset that confirms our international leadership, but it is also a major factor in attracting foreign investment. Additionally, we fear that the departure of the ICAO may lead to the departure of other international headquarters based in Montreal, which could, i ...

IFP: SUPPORTS R1.4 BILLION ALLOCATION TO UNIVERSITIES The IFP is pleased that the Department of Higher Education and Training has allocated R1.4 billion to improve university infrastructure. Upgrades will include university student residences especially at disadvantaged universities such as Walter Sisulu University and University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape where students currently live under extremely poor conditions and have to share small rooms with a number of other students.
