Sensex extends losses for second day, drops 103 pts: Extending losses for the second straight day, the benchmark BSE Sensex fell by another 103 points in early trade today on selling mainly in banking, auto, realty and refinery sector stocks on the back of lower Asian cues. ICICI Bank slipped by 1.72 per cent and HDFC Bank by 1.54 per cent as the stock also turned ex-dividend today. The Sensex resumed slightly higher at 24,828.38 and moved in a range of 24,664.88 and 24,831.79 before quoting at 24,702.38 at 1000 hours, showing a loss of 103.45 points, or 0.42 per cent, from its last close. The NSE 50-share Nifty also moved down by 26.95 points, or 0.36 per cent, to 7,375.30 at 1000 hours. Major losers were ONGC (1.92 pct), ICICI Bank (1.72 pct), Tata Power (1.65 pct), HDFC Bank (1.54 pct), NTPC (1.39 pct) and Hero Motocorp (1.30 pct). Stock in News Today -- IIFL IJK Shares of Bajaj Auto marginally gained by 0.7% and closed at Rs. 1908 per share. The auto major came out with its results, commenting on the same, Amar Ambani, Head of Research at IIFL said, “Bajaj Auto reported a lower than expected revenue owing to a steep fall in realizations. While the margins on the face of it look higher than expectations but when adjusted for MTM gains margins are lower than estimates. Bajaj Auto has been losing market share in the domestic two-wheeler business, which it hopes to regain through launches of new models. Export markets too seem to be under some stress. We prefer Hero Motocorp over Bajaj Auto in the two-wheeler space.” Shares of Axis Bank was marginally down by half percent. The bank’s net profit for the December quarter rose to Rs. 1,604 crore as compared Rs. 1,347 crore in the same quarter a year earlier. However, the bank reported a rise in its non-performing assets. By 2001, Hero Honda beat Bajaj Auto to become India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer – and also the world’s largest for 12 consecutive years. Yamaha to make global bike models in India Japanese bike major Yamaha plans to take the made-in-India brand global. The company has decided to develop and manufacture 'global models' here that would be sold in emerging markets, European countries and its home market Japan. "India is a low-cost market , but we are not looking at just that. We want to develop sporty and stylish models from here and these would be for European markets and Asian markets," Hiroyuki Yanagi , president and CEO of Yamaha Motor Co told TOI here. The company, he said, wants to make India a location for developing and manufacturing "commuter" bikes or those powered by engines ranging between 100cc and 200cc. HMCL on Monday announced that its sales jumped to 557,890 units in May 2013, from 556,644 units in the corresponding month of the previous year. Though the figures represent only a marginal increase of 0.22 per cent, it was the company’s highest-ever sales for any single month.
